It took 35 years to get it off the ground but production on the sequel to the 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice is underway. Director Tim Burton is returning to the world of The Ghost with the Most for the sequel, reuniting with stars Michael Keaton, the lovely Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder who played the titular bio-exorcist and iconic goth girl Lydia Deetz, respectively. Cameras have been rolling on the sequel for over a week and now the first behind-the-scenes look at Ryder has hit the internet!

Yep, that’s Lydia Deetz! Ryder’s return to the role came complete with looking damn near identical to the character’s memorable late-80s look from the original. Ryder has had an incredible second act to her career with her role on Stranger Things putting her back in the spotlight and now, in this legacy sequel, she’ll be stepping back into one of her most famous roles over three decades later.

While next to nothing is known about the plot of the film, it will star Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter and Willem Dafoe as an afterlife cop. Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci have also signed on for the sequel, which is currently set for a September 6th, 2024 release.

Tim Burton is set on bringing a classic franchise back to the silver screen with his work on a Beetlejuice sequel. The cast has been growing quite a bit as of late, as the film has already started production. It’s unclear if the script was finished in advance given the WGA strike but we’ll have to see if anything changes. That still isn’t stopping the return of adding to its cast with some heavy hitters. Michael Keaton is back in the titular role and is joined by Jenna Ortega, who will play the daughter of Winona Ryder’s character, who is also returning.

As of now, the cast has also added Catherine O’Hara alongside Justin Theroux and Monica Belluci. Yet, that isn’t all as the news has just dropped that Willem Dafoe has seemingly also joined the production. The exact details on his character are scarce, but he may be playing a law enforcement officer in the afterlife, but it’s unclear if he has that role or simply is a cop that may be living.

The film is eyeing a September 2024 release, which was Marvel Studios’ original release date for Blade. Though that film halted pre-production due to the strike, it’s not a good showcase that this film is moving forward. It’s also funny to see some typecasting for this film as Ortega continues to gather all gothic franchises under her belt after her recent breakout hit Wednesday. It’ll be interesting to see her dynamic opposite Ryder.

  • Warner Bros. Officially Adds ‘Beetlejuice 2’ to Its Slate, Justin Theroux Joins Cast

Warner Bros. Officially Adds ‘Beetlejuice 2’ to Its Slate, Justin Theroux Joins Cast

Michael Keaton can scratch another iconic role off his list of parts to play again 30+ years later. According to THR’s Aaron Couch, Warner Bros. has finally put the sequel to the 1988 classic Beetlejuice on the slate.

Rumors of a Beetlejuice sequel have persisted for years but now the pieces are in place to bring the Ghost with the Most back to the big screen. In early 2022, it was reported that Keaton would reprise the role and that he’d be joined in his return by Winona Ryder. More recently, THR reported that director Tim Burton was on board to return to direct the sequel and that Jenna Ortega (Scream, Wednesday) was circling a major role believed to be the daughter of Ryder’s Lydia and Justin Theroux joined the cast in an unknown role.

It seems now WB has all the pieces in place and are ready to move into production immediately. THR reports that the powers that be at WB have put Beetlejuice 2 on their theatrical slate, slotting it in for a September 6, 2024 release while Deadline reports the project will begin principal photography on May 10th.

Beetlejuice marks the second iconic 1980s role that Keaton has now revived. The actor will once again fill the dual roles of Bruce Wayne and Batman in this Summer’s The Flash. All we can do now is hold out hope that he’ll pull out the house flannel and reprise the role of Jack in a Mr. Mom sequel.

  • Jenna Ortega Circling a Role in ‘Beetlejuice 2’

Jenna Ortega Circling a Role in ‘Beetlejuice 2’

Wednesday actor Jenna Ortega is looking to stay within the Tim Burton universe. It was revealed on Thursday that the actor is currently circling a role in Beetlejuice 2. A deal has not been officially set, however, should one take, Ortega would play the daughter of Lydia, the character originated by Winona Ryder in the original movie. Burton is expected to return as the director for Beetlejuice 2, while Michael Keaton is expected to return as the titular character. The sequel, which has been in the works for a long, long time, will finally kick off production in either May or June in London.

Beetlejuice 2 would serve as a reunion between Ortega and Burton. The duo worked together on the first season of Netflix’s Wednesday, which was renewed for a second season back in January. It’s currently unclear if Ryder will return for the sequel, although the actor was attached to the project as of a year ago.

Beetlejuice, which was released in 1988, also starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jordan and Catherine O’Hara, earned an impressive $80 million on a $15 million budget. Talks of a sequel being in the works have been ongoing since 2017, however, this marks the closest the film has come to entering production. As of now, the movie does not have a release date.

‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel Moving Forward, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder Returning

Back in 1988, Tim Burton made waves with his film Beetlejuice. It featured Michael Keaton in the titular role as the ghoul guide of the dead. The film saw Beetlejuice assist a newly deceased couple haunting what was once their home as a new family moves in. For a while, there have been conflicting reports if a sequel to the hit film would become a reality, and it seems none other than Brad Pitt is the one to make it a reality.

It’s being reported that Brad Pitt will produce Beetlejuice 2 through his production company Plan B and that they hope to have cameras rolling on the project by this summer. Its also been confirmed that the film will indeed feature the return of Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, who will be reprising their respective roles.

There is no word on if Tim Burton will join them to direct the project. There have been multiple attempts at a sequel to the film with Jonathan Gems hired to write a screenplay back in 1990, but nothing came of the project as Keaton and Burton had moved their focus to Batman Returns. In 2011, another attempt was made with Seth Grahame-Smith set to pen a script for a sequel, and then again in 2017 Mike Vukadinovich was hired to rewrite Smith‘s script but was later confirmed in 2019 by a Warner Bros. spokesperson that the sequel was not in active development.
