‘Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’: Sony Unveils First Footage & Synopsis

The four-year wait for the resolution of Miles Morales’ multiversal cliffhanger is finally entering its home stretch. During Sony Pictures’ massive opening presentation at CinemaCon 2026, directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson took the stage to officially unveil the first footage from Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Billed as the “final chapter of Miles’ story,” the footage picks up exactly where Across the Spider-Verse left off, confirming that the stakes have shifted from a race across the multiverse to a desperate fight for survival in a world that doesn’t belong to him.

Miles Morales returns for the final chapter of Sony Pictures Animation’s Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Hunted by Miguel O’Hara’s Spider Society and betrayed by his friends, Miles finds himself in the darkest corners of the Spider-Verse in search of a way home.

Knowing that his family has been not only fractured but endangered by his calling, it’s a race against the clock for Miles to travel across the wildest reaches of time and space to fight for and reunite everything he holds most dear.

-Official synopsis for Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse

The footage shown to the Las Vegas crowd centers on the interrogation of our Miles by his alternate-reality counterpart, Miles G. Morales. Miles is seen chained to a punching bag in his Uncle Aaron’s apartment. The dialogue is tense, with the two Miles’ arguing over the “canon” and the proper pronunciation of their last name. Uncle Aaron and Prowler-Miles are depicted as a formidable duo, laughing off Miles’ pleas to be let go so he can save his father. The teaser culminates in Miles using his electric venom powers to break free from his chains, leading into a high-octane montage of him fighting his way out of the apartment while glitching uncontrollably.

After multiple delays due to the “iterative” process of Lord and Miller and the 2023 strikes, Sony has officially locked in June 18, 2027, as the release date.

  • Kevin Feige Reveals Why Miles Morales Has Yet to Appear in the MCU

Kevin Feige Reveals Why Miles Morales Has Yet to Appear in the MCU

Since first appearing in Marvel Comics Ultimate Fallout #4 in 2011, Miles Morales has become one of Marvel’s most popular and important characters. In addition to becoming a major player for the publisher, Morales is also the centerpiece of both a video game franchise and an animated movie trilogy by Sony, while also appearing in a handful of other animated projects. In less than 15 years, Miles Morales has developed into one of Marvel’s most marketable characters and has popped up everywhere…except in a live-action film.

In 2023, producer Amy Pascal indicated that Sony was developing a live-action Miles Morales feature film and in 2024, Marvel Studios’ Big Cheese, Kevin Feige, shared his hopes that the character would one day appear in a live-action MCU film once the animated Spider-Verse trilogy concluded. Now, in a wide-ranging press event, Feige has revealed why the character has not yet appeared in a Marvel Studios film despite being referenced in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

When asked to update the status of the live-action Morales-centric project, Feige provided a blunt response. “That is nowhere,” he stated, before adding some context.”Sony has their brilliant, genius, incredible Spider-Verse animated franchise going and until that finishes, we’ve been told to stay away,” Feige explained, dampening hopes for the character to make an appearance in next year’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the finale of the Spider-Verse trilogy, will release on June 25, 2027, six months before Marvel Studios wraps up the Multiverse Saga in Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. Perhaps coincidentally, both films have seen their release dates changed in the past few months, creating the opportunity for Morales to debut in Avengers: Secret Wars, should Sony and Marvel Studios be able to agree upon a fitting entrance. Given the lengths Marvel has gone to include characters from non-MCU films in the Multiverse Saga and the fact that the Spider-Verse franchise is also rooted in the Multiverse, it’s entirely possible that there’s more than serendipity at work and that a dovetail from the Spider-Verse to Secret Wars may be carved, allowing the popular animated version of the character to enter the live-action fray.

  • CinemaCon: Sony Sets New Date for ‘Spider-Verse’ Trilogy Finale

CinemaCon: Sony Sets New Date for ‘Spider-Verse’ Trilogy Finale

Nearly a decade after the first film hit theaters, Sony’s Spider-Verse trilogy will come to a close. As part of its CinemaCon 2025 presentation in Las Vegas, Sony revealed that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will hit theaters on June 4, 2027.

The opening chapter in the Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, took the movie-going world by storm in December 2018. Before its release, work had already begun on a second film and plans had already been spun for a third, which was originally slated for release on March 29, 2024. Much has changed about the original plans and now Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release more than three years later than intended. Franchise producer Phil Lord and co-directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson addressed the significant delay, saying, “We know how important this franchise is to so many people around us. We just could not run it back. So, we decided we needed to take the time to make sure we got it just right.”

Sony unveiled a first look at the film, showcasing some impressive new animation. Callin it a “massive finale to the trilogy,” Lord, who was on stage in Vegas, explained that, as expected, the third film will open with Miles Morales on the run, teasing that “Gwen and his other friends may or may not be enough to help him save the family that’s been the leading part of the entire system.”

  • ‘Spider-Verse’ Threequel Unlikely to Release Next Year

‘Spider-Verse’ Threequel Unlikely to Release Next Year

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has opened to much acclaim and is quite a success at the box office. Many saw it as the perfect showcase of what animation and superhero movies are capable of, but a recent announcement has unveiled that things were a bit rough behind-the-scenes.

In a new report by Vulture, a lot of details on how the crew is overworked were unveiled. Not just that, but they also made quite a point to highlight that Phil Lord was a big part of the production leading to many rewrites and changes even with an almost finished product.

Yet, the question remained if Beyond the Spider-Verse was even far along, but one of the anonymous animators has pointed out that they aren’t far along enough to even hit the next year’s release that was originally set when the film was split into two parts.

The only progress that’s been made on the third one is any exploration or tests that were done before the movie was split into two parts.

It’s definitely realistic that the film won’t be available in 2024. At this point, we don’t know how long the wait might end up being, but here’s hoping that for future developments of the project they’ll take their animation staff into consideration and avoid the issues that are currently being reported.
