Donald and Stephen Glover Writing ‘Lando’ Disney+ Series

Lando was among the first series showcased as Lucasfilm’s future for their Star Wars ventures on Disney+. Yet, the series has pretty much been missing in action ever since, and was long believed that it may have just been dropped at some point completely. Across the three years development cycle, Dear White People creator Justin Simien joined production only to leave it later to direct Haunted Mansion.

Now, it seems that the project is alive after all. Atlanta and Swarm writers, Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover have joined the production to revive the long-dormant project. This deal did happen before the writer’s strike and who knows if it’ll still remain given it’s now facing a delay before it even got started. As such, it also seems like we finally got the confirmation it’ll see Glover reprise his role from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

This series might be the only chance for them to continue the set-up from that film’s post-credit sequence that has long been dormant. Though, the strike keeps many of the current developments as a big question mark until the studios finally return to the table and give their talent the money they deserve for the work they invested. So, we’ll see what the future holds once a fair deal has been found.

‘Star Wars’: Donald Glover Eyeing Return As Lando For Future Project

Solo: A Star Wars Story actor Donald Glover wants to return as Lando Calrissian in a galaxy not so far away. Glover confirms that he is in talks to return as Lando in a future project. Details of exactly what that project may remain under wraps. According to Glover, Lando’s charming character is a rarity in recent memory, and he says he welcomes the chance to reprise his character.

“I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time, being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious…I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck….It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”

If this new project is to be successful, it’s got its work cut out. Debuting in 2018, “Solo” was costly as the film narrowly exceeded its $250 million-plus budget. The $392 million worldwide sales did not net Disney a profit. Something else fans should remember: Director Ron Howard has openly said he’s unaware of a sequel in the works. He adds fans primarily drive news of a “Solo” sequel. Howard warns that while not impossible, he doesn’t get the sense it’s a priority for Lucasfilm. Glover returning to the big screen would be under other storylines for now.

  • SWCA: ‘Solo’ Spinoff ‘Lando’ Still in Development at Lucasfilm

SWCA: ‘Solo’ Spinoff ‘Lando’ Still in Development at Lucasfilm

When Lucasfilm announced the future of Star Wars at an Investor’s Day event in late 2020, it included an exciting new Disney+ series that has yet to come to fruition. Lando is a show focused on everyone’s favorite scoundrel and it was revealed to be in the works by the creator of Dear White People, Justin Simien. The series was set to bring back Donald Glover in the titular role, which he took over from the iconic Billy Dee Williams in 2018’s cult-favorite film Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, since that initial reveal, almost nothing has been revealed about the project, causing many fans to fear it’s been put on indefinite hold.

During Star Wars Celebration over the weekend, CinemaBlend was able to speak with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy and get an update on the long-awaited series. After being asked about Lando, she explained that Glover‘s busy schedule is the main culprit in the show’s extended production process:

You need to ask Donald. He’s the one that holds all the cards here. But there’s no movement. I will say that honestly. But it’s not for lack of trying. It’s just that he’s a very busy guy… He’s got another series, and I think one other thing, and then he’ll come our way. So patiently waiting.

While it’s great to hear the project hasn’t been outright canceled, it is a little disappointing to know it’s still so far off from being a reality. Glover is currently finishing up the final season of his hit FX series Atlanta, and will then jump into work on Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot. Over a year ago, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the former Community star gave more or less the same update as Kennedy when asked about his future with Star Wars:

No, yeah, I have a lot of things. I like to blossom and then go away. Right now is the start of another one of those. I have like a ton of stuff I’ve been working on, but I just want it all to come out at the same time, so I feel like that’s what’s important.

There are currently no plot details on Lando and no release window. It’s also unknown whether or not Billy Dee Williams will reprise his role as an older Lando Calrissian, or when the show takes place in the Star Wars timeline.

    ‘Star Wars: Lando’ Series Announced

They are pushing out one series after another. It looks like Lando Calrissian has finally gotten his own show. It was just announced that the creator behind Dear White People Justin Simien will be developing a series focused on Lando. We sadly couldn’t see it but this is quite a surprise. There is a chance that this series will continue after the storyline that was set-up in Solo. It is still in early development so a lot can change.

    Premiere: TBD

In December 2020, Lando was announced as a Disney+ limited series with Justin Simien attached to write the show.

As of May 2022, the series is still in development at LucasFilm with President Kathleen Kenedy confirming that production would be waiting until Donald Glover managed to free up his schedule in order to go through with the promise of a Lando Calrissian show on Disney+.

In a 2023 interview, Kennedy said the series was still in the works. Later that year, Simien revealed he hadn’t heard anything about the series since 2020.
