‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ Gets a Theatrical Release

Originally developed as an HBO Max original movie, it looks Magic Mike is taking to the big screen once again. Deadline reports that Magic Mike’s Last Dance is officially heading to theaters on February 10th, 2023 — just in time for Valentine’s Day and Super Bowl weekend. The date is one Warner Bros. Discovery already had on its schedule.

Unfortunately, those hoping for a day-and-date release will be disappointed. The outlet reports there will be a window between theatrical and HBO Max, with PVOD in between. The move shouldn’t be too surprising as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has made it clear he’d rather get films into theaters than develop them for HBO Max. And while never a huge franchise, the Magic Mike films did pull in an impressive amount, having grossed a combined $285.6 million at the global box. While that number might seem on the lower end, it’s important to note these films were produced for $7 million and $14 million, respectively.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance stars Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek, Caitlin Gerard and Gavin Spokes. The film was written by Reid Carolin and directed by Steven Soderbergh. Gregory Jacobs, who directed Magic Mike XXL, is on board as a producer this time around.

Salma Hayek Takes Over as Thandiwe Newton Exits ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’

There’s been a shift with the upcoming Magic Mike sequel, as Deadline has just reported that Channing Tatum‘s latest entry for HBO Max will see the addition of Salma Hayek. She will replace Thandiwe Newton who had to leave the project due to personal reasons. A public statement was done by Warner Bros. spokesperson on her exit.

Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters.

The upcoming HBO Ma film has been currently in production in London with Steven Soderbergh returning in the director’s chair after taking on the first film. It’ll be based on a script by Reid Carolyn. Director of the 2015 sequel Magic Mike XXL, Gregory Jacobs, is also on board but this time in a producing role alongside Nick Wechsler and Peter Kiernan.

The films were quite the box office success and even managed to spawn a stage show simply titled Magic Mike Live. It’s unclear if the upcoming film will take any inspiration from it, as the story still remains tightly under wraps. It also seems like this will be the final entry in the franchise, especially with Last Dance being quite prominent in the title. So, we’ll see how it’ll bring the story together.

Third ‘Magic Mike’ Film Heading to HBO Max, Channing Tatum Returning

It looks like Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh are back to continue the story of stripper Mike Lane, the titular Magic Mike. Warner Bros. has greenlit a third entry in the franchise that’ll premiere exclusively on their streaming service, HBO Max. Soderbergh will bring the script to life from Reid Carolin, who is also returning from the previous two entries. Magic Mike XXL‘s director, Gregory Jacobs, also return was the producer on this project alongside, Nick Wechsler, Peter Kiernan, and writer Carolin. Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, Toby Emmerich, shared his excitement on the third film that’ll be titled Magic Mike’s Last Dance:

Is there anybody on screen more charismatic and appealing than Magic Mike? We’re thrilled to be back in business with Channing, Steven and their creative team to bring back Magic Mike’s wonderful combination of dance, drama, romance and humor.

The title of “Last Dance” seems to imply this might be the final film in the franchise moving forward. Tatum is quite excited to return to the character and highlights that “The stripperverse will never be the same.” Turns out, the reason they decided to add a third was due to the work on their live show. So, we’ll see what Mike Lang’s future will be like with the new
