‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flying Back into Theaters

Paramount is bringing Top Gun: Maverick back to theaters for a limited time. On Tuesday, the studio announced that Maverick will be flying back into theaters, including select premium large formats and IMAX, beginning December 2nd through December 15th.

Maverick, the sequel to Top Gun, earned $1.48 billion worldwide during its theatrical run. $716 million of that came from the domestic box office, while the remaining $770 million came from the international box office. It remains the highest-grossing movie of the year by a landslide and is one of only two films to cross $1 billion at the box office this year, with Jurassic World Dominion ($1.001 billion) being the second.

“’Top Gun: Maverick’ truly epitomizes the magic of the moviegoing experience, and we wanted to provide fans the opportunity to once again enjoy this cinematic spectacle as it was meant to be seen. This feels like the perfect time to bring ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ back to theaters so audiences everywhere can once again experience how special this film is.”

Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution

The movie was released in May and, per Paramount, it is the only film to ever be No. 1 at the domestic box office for both Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. Maverick, which is star Tom Cruise‘s first film to open over $100 million in a single weekend, also stands as Paramount’s highest-grossing domestic release ever.

Top Gun: Maverick officially hit digital streaming on August 23rd and Blu-Ray and DVD on November 1st. It is currently slated to debut on Paramount+ on December 22nd, just in time for the holidays.

  • ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Blows Past ‘The Avengers’ At the Box Office

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Blows Past ‘The Avengers’ At the Box Office

One day after becoming the tenth highest-grossing film of all time, Top Gun: Maverick has officially surpassed The Avengers to move up the list. The Tom Cruise-led sequel is now the ninth highest-grossing film of all time. As of yesterday, the movie is currently at $623.8 million at the domestic box office. That’s enough to push it past The Avenger’s domestic haul of $623.3 million.

After two months in release, Top Gun: Maverick seems to show no signs of stopping. The film is still within the top five at the box office, and word of mouth seems to be keeping the film afloat despite the growing competition. It remains to be seen just how high Maverick can fly. The top six films of all time might be hard to beat – Avengers: Infinity War sits in sixth place with $678 million – but it does seem likely Maverick will overtake Titanic’s $659 million and Jurassic World’s $653 million. Should that happen, Maverick would go on to become the seventh highest-grossing film of all time.

Maverick is Cruise’s best-performing film at the box office and the actor is certainly being rewarded for its success. Per Variety, Cruise is looking to earn a minimum of $100 million from ticket sales, his salary and his cut from rentals and streaming revenue down the line.

Top Gun: Maverick was directed by Joseph Kosinski and follow’s Cruise’s Maverick as he returns to the prestigious aviation academy for a special assignment. The film is currently set to hit home video on August 23rd.

  • ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Now Tops Paramount’s All-Time Box Office List

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Now Tops Paramount’s All-Time Box Office List

As of Tuesday evening, Top Gun: Maverick has passed $600 million at the domestic box office. The film is currently sitting at $601.9 million domestically and $595.6 million internationally. That brings the film to a stunning total of $1.2 billion globally.

Reaching $600 million at the domestic box office is an impressive feat, even without an ongoing pandemic. As it stands, Top Gun: Maverick ranks as the 12th in all-time North American ticket sales, behind Incredibles 2 ($608 million) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($620 million). It’s more than likely the film will surpass Incredibles 2 shortly, as the film continues to perform well for Paramount despite its competition at the box office. It is also entirely possibly the film will surpass Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Avengers ($623 million) when all is said and done.

Along with crossing $600 million, Top Gun: Maverick has become Paramount’s highest earner at the North American box office to date, surpassing Titanic’s $600.7 million domestic haul – that total, of course, does not include the money earned from the film’s various re-releases, which have since brought it to $659 million.

“For 110 years, Paramount Pictures has produced and distributed some of the most iconic films in Hollywood history, including the all-time classic ‘Titanic,’ which marks its 25th anniversary this year,” Brian Robbins, Paramount’s president and CEO said in a statement to the press. “‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is a phenomenal motion picture, and we take deep pride in celebrating this tremendous achievement alongside Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, our marketing and distribution teams, and, of course, all the new and original ‘Top Gun’ fans, without whom this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Top Gun: Maverick has become a box office phenomenon since its release over Memorial Day weekend. Even now, nearly two months after release, the Tom Cruise-led flick remains in the top three releases, having pulled in another $15.5 million from this past weekend. With no signs of stopping, Maverick seems likely to continue smashing records before its run is complete.
