‘Daredevil’ and ‘Penguin’ Paused Due to WGA Strike

Two more productions have paused production due to the ongoing WGA Strike. Deadline reported on Wednesday that both Daredevil: Born Again and The Penguin have officially paused production. Both series are expected to pick production back up whenever the strike ends, whenever that might be.

The move comes after Daredevil: Born Again was previously shut down due to the strike as recently as June 12th. Born Again is three months into its planned eight month shoot for a total of 18-episodes. The series hails from Matt Corman and Chris Ord and is expected to have some sort of presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

As for Penguin, the series has too been subjected to picketing by writers and is officially throwing in the towel for now. A spinoff of The Batman, The Penguin will see Colin Farrell reprise his role in the eight-episode series.

Expect more productions to be impacted while the strike remains ongoing. Fingers crossed Hollywood gives the writers what they’re worth sooner rather than later.

  • Colin Farrell’s Penguin Won’t Smoke in ‘The Batman’

Colin Farrell’s Penguin Won’t Smoke in ‘The Batman’

It looks like Colin Farrell‘s version of Oswald Cobblepot will be lacking one of his many signatures in the upcoming The Batman film. In the comics, the character has often been portrayed smoking a cigarette or even a cigar at times, but it seems that Warner Bros. won’t allow the portrayal of the character with it. In an interview with Jake’s Takes, he revealed that he fought quite a bit to get his character to smoke in the film, but his requests were always turned down.

Big studios make big decisions around such thing as the presence of cigarettes in films. I fought valiantly for a cigar. At one stage I said, ‘I can have it unlit! Just let me have it unlit.’ They were like, ‘No.’ [As if] a bunch of 12 year olds are going to start smoking Cuban cigars because [the Penguin is smoking cigars in a movie.]Colin Farrell

They aren’t the only ones that have set a smoking ban in their productions, as Disney famously made the decision back in 2007. They even extended it to their other subsidiaries – sorry Wolverine fans, no cigar for him – and are quite strict on it. To be fair, Farrell’s upcoming version of Cobblepot seems closer to a gangster version of the character that is only now on his path to embracing the Penguin identity. So, we’ll see what the future has in store for the character and if he at least gets his iconic hat.

  • Colin Farrell Reprising Role as The Penguin for Spin-Off Series

Colin Farrell Reprising Role as The Penguin for Spin-Off Series

The Batman has yet to premiere, yet and it seems to already be quite the hot property for Warner Brothers. A while back it was announced that development had begun on A Gotham City Police Department centered prequel series to the film, surprising many as the film had yet to even show off a trailer. Of course, as we soon learned, that wasn’t the only Batman spinoff in development. A few weeks later, reports suggested another spin-off focused on Colin Farrell’s penguin was in development.

Variety is officially reporting that Farrell has indeed signed on to reprise the role of Oswald Cobblepot in the project. The actor will also serve as an executive producer on the series. The Penguin series was first announced back in September, but at that point, Farrel had yet to sign onto the project. The series will reportedly follow the Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham City as one of the top crime bosses in the criminal underworld.

The show is being written by Lauren LaFranc, with Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark serving as executive producers alongside Farrell. We’ve yet to see Farrell debut as the Penguin yet as he’s set to make his debut as the character in The Batman. However, what we’ve seen of Farrell so far has shocked many due to the actor being so unrecognizable under all the makeup to transform him in Penguin.

The Batman is currently set to release on Mar. 4th, 2022 with Farrell starring alongside Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis
