SDCC: ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’ Trailer Includes a ‘The Suicide Squad’ Easter Egg

The Shazam: Fury of The Gods trailer has finally arrived and fans are already anticipating the return of the Wizards champions. The trailer included some great references to the wider DC Extended Universe with glimpses of characters like the Flash, Batman, and Aquaman but if you look a little closer you’ll notice some references to another recent DC film.

If you look close enough you’ll be able to spot multiple references to Starro, the villain of The Suicide Squad. The world briefly got a glimpse of the conquerer on television, seen stomping down the streets of Corto Maltese as Task Force X took it on.

  • SDCC: First Details on ‘Shazam 2’ Story

SDCC: First Details on ‘Shazam 2’ Story

We’ve all wondered what exactly the upcoming Shazam: Fury of the Gods film has in store for us. While the details are still quite sparse, the San Diego Comic-Con panel has finally started for DC’s future slate. It kicked off with one of the funniest entries in the franchise, and it offered us a small glimpse into what we can expect. As COVID hit and there’s the challenge of the teen cast aging to fast, it seems to avoid that issue they’ll simply have the film take place a few years after the original. That is not all, as it’ll also see how the team is established as heroes and they will face off against the daughters of Atlas in the upcoming film.

  • ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam’ Were Originally One Film

‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam’ Were Originally One Film

After a long wait, the Black Adam trailer has finally arrived Dwayne Johnson‘s dream project of taking on the role of Theo-Adam is finally revealed to the world. The trailer gives us a quick recap of his origin and teases his eventual battle with, or perhaps against, the Justice Society of America. Yet, it turns out that the original plan was for him to appear in the Shazam film, which would’ve actually been the origin of both. We did get a brief tease, but Johnson offered some insight into their initial plans.

The original plan, maybe five or six years ago I think, was to tell the two origin stories of Shazam! and Black Adam in the same movie. That’s what we had worked on. The script was delivered. When we all read the script, I immediately felt like, ‘We have to separate these two movies. We have to honor Shazam! and that origin story and what that is and what that can be for the fans and then we also have to tell our story, too, as well.’ I think in separating them, with the majority of the world not knowing who Black Adam if you weren’t a serious comic book fan, it was important I think to separate them and tell each story respectively.

Producer Beau Flynn also recalls what it was like when he and Hiram Garcia got the call from Johnson that they would turn Black Adam into its own separate project rather than just have both these properties smashed together.

I got a phone call very early in the morning from Dwayne Johnson which is always very intimidating. He called Hiram and I, he just said, ‘Brothers. We’re gonna make Black Adam. We’re gonna tell this story. It’s so big and so important,’ and that was it. It was really an amazing… Dwayne’s instincts are so extraordinary but he was right. Again, we were deep in it and developing that script with both of them and there’s a reason why sometimes in our business sometimes you have to keep moving forward and sometimes the business tells you. We weren’t really cracking it. It wasn’t really working and then that’s when that call came through and everything changed.

It’s certainly interesting to get a look behind the scenes and find out how films were originally pitched. The move was definitely smart as it gave the films a unique opportunity to build up a special crossover while also giving their respective (anti-)heroes time to find their footing in the world.

  • Warner Bros. Debuts ‘Black Adam’ Trailer at CinemaCon

Warner Bros. Debuts ‘Black Adam’ Trailer at CinemaCon

Having been cast in the role since 2007, Dwayne Johnson will finally make his long-awaited arrival as the man in black, and the hierarchy of power in the DC universe will never be the same. At least that’s what we’ve been told as Black Adam has still yet to release after multiple delays. Luckily, CinemaCon has come and brought with it the Warner Brothers panel, giving us some updates on the upcoming film.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a showman and show he did put on for those in attendance at Warner Bros. Big Picture showcase. Johnson first appeared via screen, saying he couldn’t make it, but he ended up surprising everyone as he took the stage, saying it just “didn’t feel right” to not be there in person to show off everything he’s been working on.

Those in attendance were treated to the very first trailer for Black Adam, featuring the man himself in his days as a slave and seeing him be reborn as with the powers of the Wizard Shazam. There are scenes with Doctor Fate telling Adam he can be the worlds destroyer or be its savior, as well as another scene where he is told that heroes do not kill, responding that he does. The trailer doesn’t give away much plot wise, but is gives a brief look into what you can expect from the movie.

Johnson had the audience scream quite loud, revealing that the recorded audio would actually be used in the film during a “big battle scene.”

The film was initially set to release on July 27th, 2022, but it was pushed back a few months and is now set to hit theaters on Oct. 21st, 2022.

Warner Bros. Teases ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’ at CinemaCon

CinemaCon has finally arrived and brought along plenty of news for movie fans, especially those of the DC Extended Universe. On Tuesday evening, Warner Bros. Discovery took to the stage to hint at its forthcoming slate. While the studio was sure to highlight a vast array of films, most of its presentation was focused on highlighting many of its DC releases like The FlashBlack Adam, Aquaman andthe Lost Kingdom, and of course, Shazam: Fury of The Gods

CinemaCon brought us some new details on the film, with some new footage debuting at the event with stars Zachary LeviAsher AngelHelen Mirren, and Jack Dylan Grazer who were on stage to present. The panel featured some brand new footage from the film, opening with Billy having a dream that he was on a date with Wonder Woman in which she turns into the Wizard Shazam. The footage also featured the daughters of Atlas and Mirrens’ Hespera fighting Shazam.

In the footage with Billy fighting Hespera, he mentions that he has seen the Fast and The Furious movies and knows that saving the world is all about family, with the Shazam family showing up to aid the champion.

Fans were delighted to hear back in March that the sequel to 2019’s Shazam! would indeed be released much earlier than expected. Initially set to release on June 2nd, 2023, the film will hit theaters this holiday season on Dec. 16th, 2022. Fans will have to wait just a little bit longer to get a look at some footage from the film presented looks to be going public right now.

Fury of The Gods will see Levi and Angel back as the titular hero with newcomers Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Miren set to play the antagonist of the film, the wicked sisters and daughters of Atlas.

  • ‘The Flash’ and ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom’ Won’t Release Until 2023

‘The Flash’ and ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom’ Won’t Release Until 2023

Not too long ago, we learned that DC has pushed a few of its films back. Black Adam and League of Super-Pets are pushing into the second half of the year, but sadly it seems that The Flash and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom won’t release until 2023. On the flip side, Shazam: Fury of the Gods has taken the Aquaman sequel’s December slot going up against Avatar‘s long-awaited sequel. The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch was nice enough o share the overview of the new release window, which also includes Wonka and Meg 2.

It’s a bit depressing that The Flash is getting postponed by almost an entire year again. The film promised some massive changes to the DCEU, but its release also strongly affects projects like Batgirl, which will tie directly into it with the confirmed return of Michael Keaton. Who knows what other DC projects are getting delayed as a result due to this massive shift in their release schedule.

Still, Shazam making its way to December makes a lot of sense. Avatar’s sequel has been open about its aquatic direction, and it’s a clever way by Warner Bros. to avoid any Aquaman comparisons. Plus, Shazam: Fury of the Gods may also reach an audience that the sequel won’t and the bite out of its box office might be quite a bit smaller.

  • UPDATED: David F. Sandberg Denies ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’ Mister Mind Rumor

UPDATED: David F. Sandberg Denies ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’ Mister Mind Rumor

UPDATE: Director David Sandberg has responded to the listing of Antony Gabriel as Mister Mind, confirming that while the actor did work with them on set, he is not the voice of Mister Mind of any other character in the film. Of course, he doesn’t give away what role exactly he had and it’s curious that he’d include the name in his own listing, but we’ll have to wait and see if Mr. Mind might still appear in the film.

    Source: Twitter

Towards the end of 2019’s Shazam!, Doctor Thaddeus Sivana is locked away after being defeated by the Shazamily. As the film closes, he is visited in his cell, which is covered in magical markings, by Mister Mind, a telepathic Caterpillar who was shown to have escaped the Rock of Eternity earlier in the film. Mister Mind seems to have taken an interest in Sivanna and looks to work with him in order to conquer the Seven Realms and have his revenge on Shazam.

It was believed that both Mister Mind and Doctor Sivanna would not be present in the upcoming sequel, Shazam: Fury of The Gods, as the three evil sisters would be the main antagonists of the film. However, a new casting listing hints that Mister Mind could indeed be back, and voiced by a new actor as the Mandy profile of actor Antony Gabriels lists him as the voice for Mister Mind in the upcoming film.

There’s been no official word on Mister Mind’s return or word of Gabriel’s casting so it could indeed be a small surprise meant for the film. It’s possible that Mind could return to recruit more villains for whatever he has planned for his conquest of the Seven Realms and could very well be setting up the Monster Society of Evil, a culminated group of the Marvel Family’s biggest foes.

Shazam: Fury of The Gods is set to hit theaters on June 2nd, 2023 with Zachary Levi back in the spandex and David Sandberg returning as director.

  • ‘Peacemaker’s John Cena On Rejections for ‘Shazam’ and ‘Deadpool 2’

‘Peacemaker’s John Cena On Rejections for ‘Shazam’ and ‘Deadpool 2’

John Cena is living the life as the new superhero addition to the DCEU, Peacemaker – well, probably more of an anti-hero to be fair – and is proud to lead his own series after his debut in The Suicide Squad. Director James Gunn found the perfect role for him by taking a satirical look at the classic Charleton character. As his series has just premiered, Cena has been busy with interviews. During his recording with the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, he revealed that he’s been chasing superhero roles for some time, but was met with rejections left and right. He was passed on by projects like Deadpool 2‘s Cable, and even the title role for Shazam!.

I can’t tell you how many superhero roles I’ve been rejected for. Shazam is certainly one. There was a brief try at the Deadpool universe, rejection. Shazam! was Dikembe Mutumbo. There was a few in the Marvel universe, rejected.

    John Cena

It’s certainly a competitive market out there, as many actors are trying to nab that role for their chance to either bring a personal favorite hero to life or get their foot in the door. Cena is a household name for many and has starred in quite a few films and projects. So, even if it took some time, the wait has paid off for him to not only join a superhero project but also to find a role he can fully embrace. The fact he still loves wearing the costume to every event is a testament of his commitment.
