This Is Most Definitely the Way: Sigourney Weaver in Talks to Join ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’

The cast of The Mandalorian already counts modern-day sci-fi queen Katee Sackhoff as one of its key characters in Bo-Katan Kryze. Now, as the streaming series prepares to make the jump to the big screen comes word that the OG sci-fi queen is in talks to step into a role in the galaxy far, far away.

According to Jeff “The In” Sneider, Sigourney Weaver is in talks to join Lucasfilm’s next Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Weaver’s potential role in the Jon Favreau-helmed flick was not revealed though it is reportedly a “key role.” The Mandalorian & Grogu will begin production soon ahead of a scheduled May 22, 2026 release.

  • James Mangold’s ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ Brings on ‘Andor’ Scribe as Co-Writer

James Mangold’s ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ Brings on ‘Andor’ Scribe as Co-Writer

Lucasfilm generated significant buzz at Star Wars Celebration 2023 by announcing a trio of new films that would bring the galaxy far, far away back to theaters. Each of the three films will be set in eras never before explored in films and two of those in eras never explored at all. Though directors are in place for all three (Dave Filoni, James Mangold and  Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy), there’s been no release dates provided and, in fact, Jon Favreau‘s The Mandalorian & Grogu will beat them all to the big screen. However, as Mangold continues work on his Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, it looks like he’ll be getting a hand on completing the script for his Dawn of the Jedi era film.

According to THR’s Borys Kit, writer Beau Willimon has been brought on by Lucasfilm as a co-writer for Mangold’s film.

Willimon is a known quantity for Lucasfilm, having written three episodes of their Star Wars streaming series, Andor, one of which “One Way Out,” earned him an Emmy nomination.

As revealed in April 2023 at Star Wars Celebration, Mangold’s untitled film will take place in “the deep past, telling the tale of the first Jedi to wield the Force and harness it as a liberating power in an era of chaos and oppression.” The director explained that it provides him with “a chance to tell the entire story of its own: the birth of the Force,” and to answer questions such as “where did (the Force) come from? How is it found? Who was the first Jedi?”

Lucasfilm Reveals a Release Date for ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’

Lucasfilm kicked off 2024 by announcing that the next chapter in the story of Din Djarin and his foundling, Grogu, would be told in theaters; however, no release date was given for the film at that time. That’s now been remedied via an official release from Disney that provides a date for the duo’s big screen debut.

Star Wars will return to theaters with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu on May 22, 2026.

  • Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars Film Still Looks to Be on Track for 2026 Release

Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars Film Still Looks to Be on Track for 2026 Release

During Star Wars Celebration 2023, a new film starring Daisy Ridley and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was announced. Set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, the film is set to be the first project set in The New Jedi Order era of the Star Wars timeline. Originally developed by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight took the reigns on the project in March 2023. While there was originally some discussion about the film hitting theaters in 2025, recent shifts to Disney’s theatrical slate removed the December 2025 date from the calendar. Still, there was some belief that Lucasfilm wanted the new Rey-centric film to be the first Star Wars film in theaters since 2019.

I know the storyline for one film. That’s not to say that that’s all it is, but that’s what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don’t know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited.

Those hopes were dashed when Lucasfilm announced that the Jon Favreau-directed The Mandalorian and Grogu would be the studio’s next theatrical release. It seems that bit of news set some folks on a path to believe some apparent disinformation that began to be spread which culminated in a rumor that the Rey film was in trouble and that Knight had walked away from the project. Now, two sources have independently reported that the rumors are unfounded and given some positive updates on the film.

io9’s Germain Lussier first reported that a source at Lucasfilm denied the rumors and stated that Knight was currently working on a new draft of the project. Later, Jeff “The Insneider” Sneider stated that not only was the film doing fine but that he expected it to be Lucasfilm’s 2nd 2026 film, hitting theaters on December 18th.

Ridley has always been a popular target for misogynistic fans so it’s no surprise that any and all negative, unsupported rumors would circulate quickly online. With nearly 3 years until the potential release of the New Jedi Order film, there’s plenty of time for the project to come together and be the first chapter of stories on an all-new part of the Star Wars timeline.

  • Star Wars Will Return to Theaters with a Mandalorian Film

Star Wars Will Return to Theaters with a Mandalorian Film

Lucasfilm has been working to find a way to get Star Wars back into theaters; now they’ve revealed that their next film will feature two of the studio’s most popular characters. Via an official release on their website, it’s been revealed that the next Star Wars film will be directed by Jon Favreau and titled The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Through 3 seasons of the streaming series The Mandalorian, Favreau has proven that Star Wars is still a top-tier property with plenty of gas left in the tank. Now, he’s taking Din Djarin and his foundling, Grogu, to the big screen. “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.” The project is set to begin production in 2024 which should see it ready for theaters by the May 22, 2026 release date already set aside by Disney for a Star Wars film.

For some time, rumors have swirled that Lucasfilm was considering presenting the next chapter of The Mandalorian in a film and now it looks as though that is the case. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

  • The Mandalorian and Grogu

    The Mandalorian and Grogu

    Premiere: May 22, 2026

After 3 seasons of the streaming series The Mandalorian, Din Djarin and Grogu are headed to the big screen. On January 9, 2024, the feature film The Mandalorian and Grogu was announced though no release date for the project was given.

The film will be directed by Jon Favreau, who co-wrote the script with Dave Filoni. In April 2024, Lucasfilm revealed that The Mandalorian & Grogu was slated to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.

On January 13, 2025, insider Kristian Harloff revealed that Embo, a Kyuzo bounty hunter who first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, was set to be one of the film’s primary antagonists.

    Cast

    • Pedro Pascal as the voice of Din Djarin
    • Sigourney Weaver as New Republic Colonel Bishop
    • Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt
    • Dave Filoni as Embo
    • Johnny Coyne as Imperial Warlord

Heir to the Empire: Dave Filoni Becomes Lucasfilm’s New Creative Grand Admiral

Short of George Lucas, nobody associated with Lucasfilm understands what makes Star Wars tick quite like Dave Filoni. Now, the creator behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka will step into a new role as Chief Creative Officer.

In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways,” said Filoni. His new role as CCO will change that and allow him to oversee Star Wars projects from the start. “In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on,” Filoni said. “When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase. I’m not telling people what to do,” Filoni explained. “But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost.”

Filoni is still expected to helm a New Republic-era film that will tie together the stories of Disney Plus series The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett and Skeleton Crew. He explained that his new role involves “understanding the intent of the filmmakers and being a resource to them.” After spending years working with Lucas and developing films, Filoni has established himself as a wise, old master of the galaxy far, far away. “Literally, hours now of Star Wars storytelling I have done,” he said. “See…I even phrased that like Yoda.”

Filoni hopes those hours–numbered no doubt in the hundreds–will allow him to make a major difference with the filmmakers Lucasfilm brings on to continue telling Star Wars stories. “To truly help filmmakers, it was really important for me to experience it firsthand,” he said. “I can also lend a perspective on the challenges that telling these stories will present. I feel more capable of actually being helpful outside of just saying, ‘Well, Jedi are like this, and Sith are like this…” As challenging as Star Wars fandom can be, Filoni’s experience will allow him to be a Wayfinder for future storytellers.

  • Daisy Ridley on What She Expects from Her New Jedi Order Film

Daisy Ridley on What She Expects from Her New Jedi Order Film

This past April, Lucasfilm made quite a splash at Star Wars Celebration 2023 by announcing three new Star Wars films set in three all-new eras of storytelling. One of those films will be set following the events of the sequel trilogy and will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey who will be attempting to resurrect the Jedi Order. While there have been no official updates on the film from Lucasfilm’s new CCO, Dave Filoni, Ridley gave some insight into the film in an interview with Collider.

I’m very excited. The story is really cool. I’m waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don’t have any other updates. It’s not what I expected, but I’m very excited,” said Ridley who explained that she was “shittingherself ahead of her appearance at Star Wars Celebration 2023, “because no one knew I was going to that.

The New Jedi Order film began as a top-secret project co-written by Lost and HBO’s Watchmen Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, who left the project in the Spring of 2023, just a few months after Lucasfilm had hired Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to direct it. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight came on to continue developing the film, allowing it to be part of Lucasfilm’s big announcement that Star Wars would finally be returning to theaters. In the Summer of 2023, Disney added two new Star Wars films to its upcoming theatrical slate (May 22nd, 2026 and December 18th, 2026) and it’s long been expected that Ridley’s Rey film, which will pick up 15 years after Star Wars: Episode IX-The Rise of Skywalker, would be the first of the trio to hit screens.

While Ridley’s not quite ready to reveal everything about her next appearance as Rey, she did reiterate that she expects it to be the film that puts Star Wars back in theaters, though she’s not quite as sure that those 2026 dates will hold in this post-strike world.

I know the storyline for one film,” said Ridley when asked if this new film might kick off her own trilogy. “That’s not to say that that’s all it is, but that’s what I was told about,” she added. “And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don’t know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited.

Given the deluge of projects that are backed up at this point, there’s no certainty that any of Disney’s previously slated films will make their dates; however, their most recent update showed two Star Wars films still on the docket for 2026 and one for 2027, so Ridley may make it back to the big screen on time after all!

  • Disney Adds Two Star Wars Films to Its 2026 Slate

Disney Adds Two Star Wars Films to Its 2026 Slate

At Star Wars Celebration 2023, it became clear that Lucasfilm intended to make a splash in their return to theaters. Just a few months later, the studio has staked out a pair of new theatrical dates.

According to THR, Lucasfilm, which has not released a film since 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX-The Rise of Skywalker, will now have two releases in 2026. The first of those, originally slated for 2025, will debut on May 22nd, 2026 and will be followed up with another theatrical release on December 18th, 2026. They are joined on the slate by the preexisting December 17th, 2027 date and it’s likely that those 3 dates will be occupied by the three films revealed at Star Wars Celebration.

Of Lucasfilm’s 3 announced films, it’s believed that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy‘s New Jedi Order era film, which was being rewritten by Steven Knight after Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson left the project, is furthest along in development. That makes May 22nd, 2026 the likely landing spot for that film and it now seems likely that it will be joined that year by Dave Filoni‘s New Republic-era film which might occupy the new December 18th, 2026 date. James Mangold‘s Dawn of the Jedi-era project remains in development but given the director’s current slate, it seems likeliest to end up in 2027.

  • Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie May Hit Theaters Sooner Than Expected

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie May Hit Theaters Sooner Than Expected

As part of Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars films that would usher the galaxy far, far away back into theaters. According to recent reports, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy hopes to have director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy‘s untitled New Jedi Order Era film ready to hit theaters in December 2025 but after that, it’s a bit murky. The timing of Dave Filoni‘s “Heir to the Empire” film is entirely dependent on the New Republic Era stories that are being told on Disney Plus and James Mangold‘s untitled Dawn of the Jedi Era project seems like a massive undertaking that could be several years off. But now, a previously announced project that only got a brief mention at Celebration is back in the news and may be ready for theaters sooner than expected.

According to Deadline, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is not only still very much on board to direct his Star Wars project but might be ready to do so next year. The trade reports that while Waititi’s next project is likely to be his adaptation of the New York Times best-seller Klara and the Sun, his sights are still set on getting started on his untitled Star Wars film in 2024.

Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.

Kathleen Kennedy on Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film, Star Wars Celebration 2023

Waititi’s Star Wars project is still cloaked in mystery and has been pushed around on the schedule a few times already. Once upon a time, the film was expected to hit theaters in 2023. With Waititi needing more time on the script, production on the film was delayed to an expected 2023 start which, obviously, won’t happen with the director tackling Klara and the Sun. The good news is that Waititi likely won’t get pulled away from his Star Wars film by Marvel Studios for Thor 5 so it’s likely that he’ll make good on Kennedy’s promise that the film will get made “one day.” Even if production on the film does start in 2024, it’s highly unlikely it would hit theaters in 2025 with Obaid-Chinoy‘s film certainly the priority. However, it’s possible Lucasfilm could add a 2026 date to Disney’s theatrical slate should the film be ready for release by then.
