  • Stephen King Adaptation ‘The Boogeyman’ Getting Theatrical Release

Stephen King Adaptation ‘The Boogeyman’ Getting Theatrical Release

In a surprising move, The Boogeyman is now moving from streaming to theaters. The news was announced by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday. Per the outlet, The Boogeyman, which is an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King, will no longer debut exclusively on Hulu. Instead, it will go directly to theaters on June 3rd.

The decision comes after the film, which was directed by Rob Savage, had a strong test screening in December. Executives and producers seemed excited by the response and quickly decided to re-evaluate their plans for the project. They also got approval from King after showing the film to him. The movie was reportedly made for just $17 million and executives are hopeful that the film will perform like other low-budget horror titles, namely Smile, which was also originally set to be a streaming exclusive for Paramount+ before moving to theaters. That film went on to make $216 million at the worldwide box office.

The Boogeyman is based on a story that was included in King’s 1978 horror anthology, Night Shift. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who penned A Quiet Place, wrote the screenplay for Savage. The film stars Chris Messina, Sophie Thatcher, Vivien Lyra Blair, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, and Madison Hu.

  • ‘The Midnight Club’ Creators to Adapt Stephen King’s The Dark Tower for Amazon

‘The Midnight Club’ Creators to Adapt Stephen King’s The Dark Tower for Amazon

That deal with Intrepid Pictures has already come to fruition as it seems that Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy, long-time Netflix producers, have already set their sight on a massive IP for Amazon Studios. According to a new report by Deadline, they are set to adapt Stephen King‘s iconic The Dark Tower book series. They already have set out their adaptation with five seasons that’ll then be followed by two stand-alone feature films. They also got their hands on the series before the Amazon deal, as revealed in an interview with Deadline.

You’re the first person we’re saying it to, but yes. Predating our deal with Amazon, we acquired the rights to The Dark Tower, which if you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life. We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point — you don’t know. But that’s something we’ve been developing ourselves and are really passionate about finally getting it up on its feet at some point.

Intrepid is mostly known for its work on horror projects, but this mammoth series has its many influences throughout its long run. It seems that Flanagan has already written the pilot and outlined The Dark Tower‘s development, which has been a dream project of his for quite some time. They aren’t strangers to King’s novels either after developing Gerald’s Game and the Shining sequel Doctor Sleep in the past, which Flanagan was heavily involved with.

Lucy Liu to Star in Stephen King’s ‘Later’ Adaptation by ‘True Blood’s Raelle Tucker

Stephen King‘s 2021 novel, Later, is going to be turned into a limited series with Lucy Liu set to take on the main role. Raelle Tucker will act as showrunner and wrote the script for the pilot. She previously worked on HBO’s True Blood and the Sacred Lies anthology series together with Blumhouse Television who landed the rights for the project and are spearheading the project moving forward. She shared her excitement about getting another chance to work with Jason Blum.

I’ve wanted to work with Jason Blum for years, and now we have two projects together. Go, me! Later is terrifying and touching and wonderfully weird — of course it is, it’s Stephen King. Adapting one of my favorite writers of all time, with an incredible partner like Blumhouse and the incomparable Lucy Liu, is a dream come true

The adaptation will explore the story of Tia (Lucy Liu), the owner of a literary agency, is facing the end of her career due to the death of her star writer. Without his promised work, she’s about to face bankruptcy and is alone raising her son Jamie. Luckily, he has the ability to speak to the dead – as one does – and is able to help her finish the book after uncovering the original plans by its original author post-mortem. Yet, it wouldn’t be a story without any conflict, as Tia’s girlfriend finds out and he might be over his head.

Edgar Wright is nothing if not booked and busy. The director, who has spent the past two decades at the helm of many cult favorites, will add a high-profile remake to his growing list of upcoming projects. Deadline revealed that Wright will take over directing duties on Paramount’s The Running Man, a live-action adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel. It’s the story of a man named Ben Richards, who participates in a futuristic reality show in which contestants are chased by “Hunters” tasked with killing them. The book got previously adapted in 1987, with a film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role. Michael Bacall, who co-wrote Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, will write the Running Man script for his longtime creative partner. He is also set to direct an adaptation of Set My Heart to Five, another science fiction tale about an android dentist who learns to feel human emotion by watching old movies. The famous director will also tackle a version of the thriller novel The Chain. Additionally, Wright has actively assured fans that he is working on the script for a sequel to 2017’s action flick Baby Driver, the last movie the director has managed to drop in theaters. His first venture into the horror genre, Last Night in Soho, was originally going to land in cinemas last year but has since been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and is now scheduled for an October 2021 premiere.
