‘The Boys’: First Look at Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy Revealed

After months of building up excitement with fans, Jensen Ackles has finally unveiled his latest “superhero” look to fans. The first look comes after Ackles and an official Vought International Twitter account teased the reveal of a comic-inspired suit on social media. The actor, best known for his leading role on the cult phenomenon Supernatural, is set to play Soldier Boy in the next season of Amazon’s The Boys. The character is a riff on Marvel’s Captain America, portrayed as a supposed WWII veteran and the United States’ very first superhero. However, fans of the series should be smart enough to know Ackles’ newest character isn’t as heroic as his corporate sponsors want the people to think. After a long wait, our official first look is finally here:

The Boys costume designer Laura Jean Shannon shared the inspiration for his new look with Entertainment Weekly:

Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that.

Ackles was cast as Soldier Boy in mid-2020, reuniting with his former Supernatural showrunner for The Boys’ third season. Since then, the fan-favorite actor has been toying with followers by sharing images of himself performing superhero workouts at the gym and recently surprised everyone with the debut of a shaggy new beard. While the facial hair is a fun new addition to the character, the design of his trusty shield and the overall look is fairly faithful to the source material. A WWII-era design for Soldier Boy was also shown via a statue in the series’ second season. However, much like his Marvelous inspiration, it seems the character has received a modern makeover with a more advanced suit. Perfect for wreaking havoc alongside Homelander in the modern world.

  • Third ‘A Quiet Place’ Film In Development Eyeing 2023 Release

Third ‘A Quiet Place’ Film In Development Eyeing 2023 Release

Paramount Pictures isn’t done with A Quiet Place just yet. The studio has given a release date to a third installment in the popular horror franchise, which may or may not act as the series’ first spin-off. According to insider Erik Davis, the project will drop on March 31, 2023. The news comes shortly after A Quiet Place: Part II successfully helped ring in the return of movie theaters across the United States. The untitled project will be helmed by Jeff Nichols, who is best known for his dramatic work with films like Mud and Loving. The script is based on an original story by Nichols and franchise creator John Krasinski. This will make the film the first Quiet Place feature not to be directed by Krasinski himself.

A Quiet Place released in 2018 to critical acclaim and focused around a family attempting to survive in a world populated by noise-sensitive monsters. The sequel was intended to come out in 2020 but was delayed over a year due to the unexpected global pandemic. A third film has been in the cards for a long time, with Nichols’ potential spin-off being announced in November of 2020. In terms of continuing the franchise past 2023, series star Emily Blunt stated recently that husband Krasinski had a “whole arc of ideas” for more films. She was quoted as saying:

I think he just wanted to see how people responded to [the second one] before he fully engaged his brain on the third one. But he has a couple of great ideas.

Whatever the case may be with this next movie, it seems likely that A Quiet Place is here to stay.

  • Sony Exec Teases MCU Spider-Man Connection

Sony Exec Teases MCU Spider-Man Connection

Ever since Sony launched their first Spidey-less Marvel project with 2018’s Venom, fans have had a single question on their minds: will Spider-Man ever actually appear in one of these supervillain origin stories? Until now, the answer has always seemed to be a resounding “who’s to say?” from all those involved with the films. In fact, Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis recently went out on a limb to say “no” outright. However, a new article from Variety features a rather intriguing quote from Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch in reference to the topic. After a brief discussion, in which Panitch explains that Sony doesn’t view their roster of 900 Marvel characters as part of a simple “Spidey-verse”, the high-ranking executive does let something slip in regards to a possible MCU cross-over:

There actually is a plan. I think now maybe it’s getting a little more clear for people where we’re headed and I think when ‘No Way Home’ comes out, even more will be revealed.

The confirmation is wildly exciting, but it’s also not entirely surprising. After all, Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Michael Keaton appeared in the first trailer for Sony’s upcoming Morbius, and it’s been mostly public knowledge for some time that No Way Home will feature a live-action Marvel multiverse. The doors that film is set to open will most likely be what allows for the entrance of these other-worldly bad guys into the wider MCU. It may also be the best way to explain how Peter Parker ends up fighting a Kraven the Hunter who looks suspiciously like Pietro Maximoff.

  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson Cast As ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Film Set for 2023 Release

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Cast As ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Film Set for 2023 Release

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has nabbed a surprising new comic book role. The actor will play Kraven the Hunter in his live-action debut, a solo film being produced by Sony. The news comes from The Wrap, who also claims the former MCU actor is signed for multiple pictures as the famed Spider-Man villain. Taylor-Johnson is best known for his prior work on comic-based properties, having portrayed Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron and the titular character in both Kick-Ass films. He also appeared in 2014’s Godzilla and played a small part in Christopher Nolan‘s Tenet.

Sergei Kravinoff is one of the few iconic Spider-Man foes to never appear on the big screen, despite multiple attempts. He is traditionally portrayed as a Russian big-game hunter with a demented Spidey obsession, refusing to quit until he has captured his prey. His most famous character arc, Kraven’s Last Hunt, is often cited as one of the greatest comic stories ever told. The developing film is being billed as the next chapter in Sony’s Marvel Universe, following their other villain-centric films Venom and Morbius. It was revealed that Kraven was next in line for the solo treatment last year, to the surprise of many fans who believed he’d appear as the antagonist in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Kraven the Hunter is set to be directed by J.C. Chandor, known for his work on Netflix’s Triple Frontier, for release on January 13, 2023. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote the script alongside Richard Wenk. Long-time Sony producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are also attached to work on the project.

  • Zack Snyder Reworking an Old ‘STAR WARS’ Script Into an Original Film

Zack Snyder Reworking an Old ‘STAR WARS’ Script Into an Original Film

It looks like Zack Snyder may be taking us to a galaxy far, far away. It’s just not the one you’re probably thinking of right now. The director is well-known for his forays into the world of superheroes, having famously tackled both Watchmen and Justice League over the course of his career. Now, Snyder is stepping away from established franchises and getting back to basics. Netflix recently released his first original feature in years, a zombie flick called Army of the Dead, and now the filmmaker has revealed he’s working on his next major project.

He shared the first news while being on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Snyder confirmed his script was originally intended to be part of the Star Wars universe, telling a brand new story set in its own corner of the celebrated timeline. Unfortunately, the story concept, which was heavily inspired by Akira Kurosawa‘s Seven Samurai, never made it past Lucasfilm. So, Snyder has set out to restructure the script and rewrite it to become an original project.

I’ve been working on it away from the ‘Star Wars’ universe, on my own, as a sci-fi thing…It’s still a sci-fi thing. It’s the same story. Now, I’m just going to let ‘Star Wars’ be ‘Star Wars.

This isn’t the first time the director has mentioned playing in the Star Wars universe. In May, he shared his interest in a project but pointed out that he “wouldn’t survive” the process. His film also would not have been the first Star Wars story to take inspiration from Kurosawa or Seven Samurai, as franchise creator George Lucas is known to have often cited the film when it comes to Star Wars: A New Hope. It remains to be seen when or if Snyder‘s sci-fi movie gets a greenlight, but here’s hoping it happens sooner than later.

  • ‘The Mandalorian’ Spin-Off ‘Rangers of the New Republic’ Currently Not in Active Development

‘The Mandalorian’ Spin-Off ‘Rangers of the New Republic’ Currently Not in Active Development

A recent article from Variety was meant to shine a light on executive producer Dave Filoni’s role at Lucasfilm, but it may have casually revealed something far more interesting. The article is quick to highlight Filoni’s involvement as an executive on both The Book of Boba Fett and Ashoka, two upcoming live-action spin-offs of The Mandalorian, before making a rather intriguing side note, as first noticed by @BespinBulletin.

A third announced spinoff, “Rangers of the New Republic,” is not currently in active development.

It would seem fans of Star Wars television may be down a project. The news isn’t all that surprising if you consider the media circus that went on with former star Gina Carano earlier this year. The actress, and retired mixed martial artist, portrayed New Republic ranger Cara Dune but was fired from the franchise after making several controversial remarks on social media. There was an early rumor that the actress was going to lead the, at the time, untitled series. Carano’s forced exit may have thrown that series’ future into a state of flux.

It is important to note that Variety does not claim the Disney+ show to be canceled. This development means we could still get the series down the line, or perhaps in a different form. Rangers of the New Republic got revealed on Disney’s Investors Day. It was intended to be part of a Mandalorian spin-off chain that would potentially crossover with Ashoka and The Book of Boba Fett, as well as the original series. Fans have spent months speculating which characters could appear, but now it seems they can put their theories to rest in the meantime.

  • REPORT: First Details for Mads Mikkelsen’s Villainous Role in ‘INDIANA JONES 5’

REPORT: First Details for Mads Mikkelsen’s Villainous Role in ‘INDIANA JONES 5’

We may finally have our first solid details on James Mangold’s Indiana Jones 5. According to a new article from The Illuminerdi, Mads Mikkelsen will be portraying the film’s main antagonist. The Danish actor, known for his villainous roles, will reportedly play a former Nazi scientist enlisted by NASA to work on their moon landing initiative. Mikkelsen’s CIA handler, tasked with being his “babysitter”, will supposedly be played by Shaunette Renee Wilson. The Illuminerdi went further, reporting that the fifth Indiana Jones will also include a female villain working side by side with Mikkelsen, described by the outlet as “an evil and brutal killer”. Scarlett Johansson was offered the role but passed.

If this information is true, it would place the events of the movie smack dab in the middle of the United States’ famed “space race” with Russia. That would mean Indiana Jones 5 is set in the late 1960s, around a decade after the end of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It also means the franchise could be leaning further into the science-fiction elements introduced by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas in the franchise’s last installment.

Indiana Jones 5 has been in various stages of production for over ten years, with Mangold being selected by Spielberg to take the reins just last year. The director will create the film based on a script by Solo scribe Jonathan Kasdan. The star-studded cast also includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Boyd Holbrook, Thomas Kretschmann, and, of course, Harrison Ford reprising his iconic title character.

  • ‘THE BOYS’ Jack Quaid to Star in New Animated Superman Series for HBO Max

‘THE BOYS’ Jack Quaid to Star in New Animated Superman Series for HBO Max

Superman is coming back to the world of animation. HBO Max and Cartoon Network have ordered two seasons of My Adventures With Superman, a new series focusing on Clark Kent’s early days as the world’s original superhero. The title character will be voiced by Jack Quaid, best known for his work on Amazon’s The Boys, while Alice Lee will give life to Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. The series will also feature Jimmy Olsen as part of Kent and Lane’s investigative journalist team, as the trio of twenty-somethings partner up to take on life together. Warner Bros. Animation President Sam Register elaborated on the series’ production:

This is the first animated Superman series in many years and we want to tell our Superman story through the trio of Clark, Lois, and Jimmy – whose relationship dynamic will allow for rich, serialized and engaging stories as we explore their lives as individuals and their journey together as friends.

The cartoon will function as Superman’s coming-of-age story, and will follow Clark as he builds his secret identity, falls in love with Lois, and embraces his role as the hero of Metropolis. Lois, portrayed as a growing star in her field, will share Clark’s adventures and help bring down the bad guys while taking aspiring photographer Jimmy Olsen under her wing. Warner Bros. Head of Kids & Family Programming Amy Freidman provided further explanation:

This fresh take from the Warner Bros. Animation team delivers a modern, relatable Clark Kent alongside a fearless, whip smart Lois Lane who are navigating the small tasks of both becoming adults and trying to save the world.

The series will be produced by animation veterans Jake WyattBrendan Clogher, and Josie Campbell. The trio’s collective work includes shows like Voltron: Legendary Defender, Teen Titans Go!, and Steven Universe.

  • J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm Developing an Animated Batman Series for HBO Max

J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm Developing an Animated Batman Series for HBO Max

It looks like we’re getting a brand new animated series about everyone’s favorite Gotham socialite turned vigilante. Batman: Caped Crusader has been ordered straight-to-series for HBO Max and Cartoon Network, with acclaimed filmmakers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves set to produce. They will be joined by long-time DC animator Bruce Timm. The cartoon is being described as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology”. Reeves and Abrams shared their enthusiasm for the new noir take on the character:

We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.

Die-hard fans of the character will know that Timm was also behind one of Bruce Wayne’s most iconic adaptations, Batman: The Animated Series. Warner Bros. Animation President Sam Register highlighted this fact in his own statement regarding the project:

  • Marvel Studios’ ‘Power Pack’ Could Be Disney+’s Anti-‘Invincible’

Marvel Studios’ ‘Power Pack’ Could Be Disney+’s Anti-‘Invincible’

Amazon’s Invincible may be the start of a new era in comic book adaptations. The series’ first season was a surprisingly enjoyable R-rated jolt to the industry’s usual page-to-screen machine. Yet, the show’s novelty had very little to do with its willingness to be edgy. We’ve seen superhero stories get dark and introspective before, most notably in the form of Amazon’s other immensely popular show The Boys, and HBO’s award-winning Watchmen. What made Invincible so special was its courage to be animated in a world where live-action dudes-in-tights are the only ones being taken seriously.

Sure, comics have a long history with cartoons. From 1941’s Max Fleischer adaptation of Superman to the critically-acclaimed Batman and X-Men series of the early ’90s. It went all the way to modern cult classics like The Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice. There’s no denying animation has always played a large role in bringing comic book characters to the forefront of popular culture. Unfortunately, despite the success surrounding these projects, the unwritten rule of geekdom has always been that adults watch real people in costumes while the children focus on cartoons. Only the biggest nerds do both. Thankfully, with the help of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Invincible, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, that rule has begun to change.

Tales of heroes in capes are the new norm, and it would seem their atmospheric rise in popularity has made the general public aware of their storytelling merits. If Invincible did anything, it was finally showing people what animation can allow a studio to pull off. A huge scope without big sets, a stellar cast without coordinating schedules, and pulse-pounding action drama without the restraints of CGI. Marvel Studios is set to make its first ventures into “adult-inclusive” animation with the debut of M.O.D.O.K. later this month and What If…? later this year. If those star-studded series go well, it hopefully won’t be the last time the studio feels confident enough to greenlight a potentially MCU-canon cartoon project. Luckily for Marvel, they already have the perfect set of characters just begging to be part of the animated scene, The Power Pack.

One of Marvel’s more obscure super-groups, this team of tween heroes consists of the four Power siblings Alex, Julie, Jack, and Katie. Introduced in 1984, the children’s story found them wielding unique abilities after coming across a dying alien. It had come to Earth in search of their genius father. As a result, Alex can control gravity, Julie learned to fly, Jack manipulates mass, and Katie can disintegrate any form of the matter before expelling it as a ball of explosive energy. Initially tasked with protecting the world from the deceased alien’s rival race, the kids end up donning costumes to hide their identities and act as Earth’s newest superhero team. Though they would occasionally bump into Marvel’s bigger guns, like Spider-Man or the Avengers, the Power Pack mostly operated on their own, taking down some of the planet’s biggest threats before the likes of Iron Man even knew there was a problem.

The concept screams Saturday morning cartoons and would act as their perfect answer to Invincible. Despite featuring four children as the protagonists, the comic series was known to tackle some pretty heavy subject matter. The Pack was imbued with great power and often ended up in situations that called their moral standings into question. Before they even hit puberty, the kids were forced to deal with topics like sexual assault and drug abuse. The comic was a great way to present these issues to America’s youth through characters their own age, and an animated series featuring the group could perform the same task for young fans of today’s MCU.

Much like Invincible, a Power Pack show would juggle all the classic coming-of-age superhero tropes with the darker realities of life. It could do so without dipping into any of the prior project’s R-rated territory. In essence, it would be the anti-Invincible. Hitting all the same thematic pressure points, but with brighter accessibility to adults and children alike. Making the series animated would also allow for the bigger stars of the MCU to easily appear in voice roles, and the isolated nature of the Power Pack’s traditional stories means they wouldn’t have to appear in live-action productions very often. If the show were to age its characters with the voice cast, it would make these potential crossovers far easier and permit the vocal performers to reprise their roles on the big screen if need be.

A Power Pack adaptation has been in varying degrees of production since 2000. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has expressed interest in bringing the group to the MCU in the past, and even commissioned a film script to be written as recently as 2017. While a movie would be better than nothing, it would seem like a missed opportunity to make something more unique. No Power Pack updates have come in quite some time, so hopefully, there’s still time to make an animated series happen.
