Paramount Developing ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin’ Movie

Paramount is looking to keep the Teenage Mutant Turtles around a bit longer. After the success of the animated movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the studio has unveiled its next move. On Thursday, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Paramount is developing a movie based on The Last Ronin.

The movie will be based on the IDW comic of the same name from writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz. The comics were released between 2000 and 2002, and a video game adaptation has already been announced although a release date is currently unknown. Tyler Burton Smith, who wrote the 2019 Child’s Play, is on board to write the screenplay. The movie is expected to have an R-rating. As of this writing, no director is attached to the project.

The Last Ronin is being produced by Walter Hamada via his 18hz production banner as part of his multi-year deal with Paramount.

  • Olivia Wilde, LuckyChap, Simon Kinberg Developing ‘Avengelyne’ Adaptation

Olivia Wilde, LuckyChap, Simon Kinberg Developing ‘Avengelyne’ Adaptation

Rob Liefeld‘s Avengelyne is getting the movie treatment. The Hollywood Reporter announced on Thursday that Olivia Wilde has teamed up with Margot Robbie‘s Lucky Chap and producer Simon Kinberg to adapt the Liefeld comic. Per the outlet, Wilde would direct the project, which is expected to be a feature, while Robbie’s Lucky Chap will produce the movie with Kinberg. As of right now, no studio is attached, but the hope is that with the package coming together, talks will begin with studios and streamers “in the coming weeks.”

While a writer isn’t currently attached to the project, Deadline has suggested an “A-list” writer is currently circling the project. As it seems to be coming together rather quickly, it’s possible news regarding a writer will hit sooner rather than later. It’s also of note that no actor is attached to the movie as of now. While Margot Robbie‘s Lucky Chap banner is producing the project, the actress is not expected to star in the project.

Debuting in 1995, Avengelyne focuses on a fallen angel cast down to Earth as she’s forced to find and protect The One. The series was created by Liefeld and Cathy Christian.

  • REVIEW: ‘Phenomena: Book One’ by Brian Michael Bendis, André Lima Araújo

REVIEW: ‘Phenomena: Book One’ by Brian Michael Bendis, André Lima Araújo

Editor’s Note: Ahead of the release of Phenomena: Matilde’s Quest later this month, Abrams sent us a physical copy of the first book to review.

Phenomena, Vol. 1: The Golden City of Eyes by Brian Michael Bendis

Brian Michael Bendis is responsible for helping to create some of the best comic characters in recent years, including Jessica Jones and Miles Morales. I enjoy his work and was thrilled when I had the chance to read and review Phenomena: Vol. 1 ahead of the release of Vol. 2. I admittedly hadn’t really heard of this title, and I’m a bit upset that I somehow allowed it to fly under my radar. It’s not one of my favorites of Bendis’, and I’m not quite sure what star rating I would give it, but I did enjoy it overall.

The story follows a young kid named Boldon as he goes on the hunt for the Golden City. Early on in his journey, he stumbles upon a Cyper named Spike, and a mysterious character that seems keen to cause the duo plenty of trouble. The story is at times ridiculous, and other times, utterly charming, and yet, it manages to be an enjoyable ride despite its bumps. Boldon and Spike are great together; Boldon is reckless and Cyper is very much all business, no play. The addition of the mysterious character – who I’m not naming as to avoid spoilers – proves to be a great addition, too. They play well off of the two main characters and help to add more depth to the story.

Phenomena: Vol. 1 is under a hundred and fifty pages, and yet, despite its short length, the story doesn’t always feel as though it’s fast-moving. This is, naturally, due to having to set up this world and its history and workings. But there’s still plenty to be established in this world, and by the end of the first volume, readers are sure to have more questions than answers. Something that should, hopefully, be tackled in the next installment now that the world has been established.

One of the main issues in the book is the artwork inside of it. The artwork is well done – André Lima Araújo has crafted some fantastic linework in this graphic novel. However, the lack of color does make it difficult to really appreciate the story being told as a whole. Normally, I don’t mind when a graphic novel is in black and white. In fact, sometimes it does serve the story better. In this instance, though, the lack of coloring seems to work against the story. The shading isn’t all that defined. And honestly, it makes it hard to get captivated by the story in the end. There are battles that are hard to follow. The locations seem to be lifeless and bland. If there was even a slight pop of color, or perhaps even more defined shading, this book could be perfect.

Overall: I’d definitely recommend giving this one a read. It’s short. It’s fun. And Spike is a great character.

  • Destin Daniel Cretton to Write, Direct ‘Naruto’ Film

Destin Daniel Cretton to Write, Direct ‘Naruto’ Film

A live-action Naruto movie is in the works from Shang-Chi director, Destin Daniel Cretton. The news was announced on Friday afternoon by The Hollywood Reporter with the outlet confirming the director officially signed on to the project for Lionsgate. A movie based on Naruto, which is one of the biggest mangas of all time, has been in development since 2015, however, very little movement has been made on the project until now.

In November of 2023, it was revealed that Red Sonja writer, Tasha Hao, was working on a script for a Naruto movie. Now with Cretton on board, it’s currently unclear whether he will rework Hao’s script or start over completely. Along with writing and directing the feature, Cretton is also set to produce the film alongside Jeyun Munford, Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Emmy Yu and Jeremy Latcham.

Masashi Kishimoto, who created the manga, celebrate the news of Cretton’s involvement. The creator explained how he felt Cretton was the perfect choice for the project, especially after getting to meet the in-demand director.

“When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto. After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo. In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process.”

Cretton, who most recently worked on an adaptation of American Born Chinese for Disney+, is still developing a Shang-Chi sequel with Marvel Studios.

  • ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ Not Moving Forward at Hulu

‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ Not Moving Forward at Hulu

On Monday, TV Line announced that Hulu is no longer moving forward with the previously announced adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses. The hugely popular book series, written by author Sarah J. Maas, is a BookTok darling and seemed like a huge catch for the streamer. It’s currently unclear why the series is currently not moving forward, however, TV Line also confirmed 20th Television/Disney currently have no plans to shop the project to other outlets. The decision not to shop the project around could suggest it’ll be reworked/redeveloped at a later time, although that has not been confirmed.

The news of the show’s status comes shortly after the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. During his presentation for Disney, Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, was asked to comment on the status of A Court of Thorns and Roses. However, at the time, Erwich simply noted that there wasn’t much he could share. “That show has been in development, but I don’t have any news to share today.”

The show was being developed by Ronald D. Moore and Maas. It’s of note, as of November, Moore had told TV Line that the project was still in development, explaining they had written some scripts. At the time, Moore told the outlet they were waiting before things really moved forward. “I think the whole town is kind of waiting to see if we have actors before things really move forward, but it’s still in development.”

On Monday, it was revealed that director David Leitch was in talks to helm a brand new Jurassic World movie for Universal. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Friday that the Deadpool 2 director has exited the project.

It’s said the deal ultimately broke down due to a difference in vision between Leitch and Universal. With a release date already set, Universal will need to move quickly in order to secure a new director if it hopes to keep the movie on track for its release next year.
