‘The Rings of Power’ Stars Discuss Gandalf Theory

After years of waiting, fans can finally stream The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime. The series, a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic Lord of the Rings trilogy, premiered it’s first two episodes on Thursday to high praise from critics. Multiple new characters found themselves introduced during the show’s initial hours, alongside younger versions of some familiar names. One fresh face, however, was that of Daniel Weyman’s mysterious Stranger, a lumbering giant of a man with strange mystical abilities. The character was shown falling to Middle-earth in a meteor in the series’ pilot.

There have been no shortage of theories on who the unnamed person actually is, but one has stood out more than the rest. A popular opinion online says that Weyman is secretly portraying a young Gandalf as he first appears in existence. According to a recent interview with ET, the actor has known the true identity of the Stranger since he was cast – but he won’t be spilling the beans anytime soon. When asked about the Gandalf theories, Weyman responded that fans will have to keep watching to find out:

I would think, hopefully, people will have as much fun watching his story as I had filming it. And I suppose the best thing to say is that while we were working, I, at each point in the story, knew exactly where the character was and who he was and what he was going through. So, from my point of view, it was quite an easy task to follow that through.

    Daniel Weyman

On the other hand, his co-star, actress Markella Kavenagh, was left just as much in the dark as viewers during the creative process. Kavenagh portrays an adventurous young Harfoot named Nori in the show, and is the one who discovers and helps the Stranger when he crashes to Middle-earth. She explained that she was forced to learn his real identity as filming went on:

[We were] finding it out week to week. I mean, you’ll see when you watch it why it was also kind of beneficial because of how the Stranger is and how Nor is as well. But yeah, it was an experience.

    Markella Kavenagh

Actress Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who has not yet appeared in the series, chimed into the conversation to add her take as well. She claimed that, in her opinion, there is a real joy in watching a mystery unfold without immediate answers:

We enjoy all the fan theories and we have those ideas. But even for some of us, we don’t ultimately know the way in which our characters are going to have these experiences. And the audience will also get to see it as it unfolds as well.

The Rings of Power is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

  • REVIEW: ‘The Devil in Ohio’

    REVIEW: ‘The Devil in Ohio’

Editor’s Note: This review is based on episodes 1-7. The eighth and final episode was not provided for review. Please keep that in mind while reading.

Netflix’s The Devil in Ohio is about a young girl who escapes a cult and finds herself wanting to stay with her rescuer and her family. It’s a simple premise, but it’s also so much more than that, really. The Devil in Ohio is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Daria Polatin and is said to be based on a true story. It’s a story about corrupt religion, family, and the lengths people will go to in order to get what they want.

The series begins with Mae (Madeleine Arthur) on the run. At the time, it’s unclear what she is running from or why, but the answers are hinted at relatively quickly. She’s in danger and needs to get away for her own safety. Enter Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel), a psychiatrist eager to protect the girl and anyone else that might need her help. From the moment Mae enters Suzanne’s life, things begin to erupt into chaos. Those familiar with Deschanel solely through her work on FOX’s Bones will be delighted to see the actress have the chance to play with more emotional complexities here. Suzanne is a flawed character. She acts on emotion rather than logic. Her choices are often questionable, and her dedication to Mae sometimes borders on obsessive. While the character means well, she’s not necessarily well-written, although Deschanel does her best with what she’s given.

Arthur, who starred in the small screen adaptation of Snowpiercer, proves to be a standout here. She perfectly captures a sense of creepiness and childlike wonder with Mae. Viewers will often find themselves questioning whether or not she’s trustworthy and if she’s worth protecting. There’s so much mystery that surrounds her character. Even by episode seven, it’s hard to imagine the Mae’s story will be successfully concluded with one final 45-minute-long episode; while we do learn a fair amount about Mae by the end of Episode 7, she hasn’t truly developed a personality of her own just yet. She’s still figuring herself out, and it’s hard to get a true feel for her character. If there’s one thing The Devil in Ohio could’ve benefited from, it would’ve been two additional episodes. Two more hours could’ve given the series time to breathe and focus on Mae and her story a bit more.

That isn’t to say The Devil in Ohio is bad. It’s not. At times, it is downright frightening. While during others, it can be quite the snooze fest. The slow moments are hard to get through, and sometimes, the writing isn’t that strong. What will keep viewers watching are the performances by the cast and the creepy atmosphere that is highlighted on screen. Unfortunately, though, The Devil in Ohio falters in trying to tell a cohesive story. With so many secrets, it often feels like writers weren’t even sure how to go about answering them, which is frustrating. All the more frustrating is the series managed to get Tahmoh Penikett and failed to truly make use of him.

Penikett is a stellar actor who has such limited screen time in The Devil in Ohio. It’s rather unfortunate, too, because his scenes in this series feel rushed and lacking any importance despite playing such a vital role. It’s almost as frustrating as waiting until the end to finally up the ante. Still, for what it is, The Devil in Ohio is worthy of a watch. Despite its overall flaws, the limited series managed to be fascinating enough that viewers will be drawn into the story of Mae and her life before she was saved.

A psychological thriller about corruption in religion and the willingness to fight back? The Devil in Ohio has all of the right components to be a stellar series. It just needed more time to tell its story.

The eight-episode limited series is now streaming on Netflix.

  • ‘Citadel:’ How the Russo Bros. Series Became One of the Most Expensive Shows of All Time

‘Citadel:’ How the Russo Bros. Series Became One of the Most Expensive Shows of All Time

Back in 2020, it was revealed that Joe and Anthony Russo would be joining forces with Amazon’s Prime Video to bring a new event series to life on the small screen. Set to star Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) and Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico), the series was dubbed a global thriller meant to launch local spinoffs in India, Italy and Mexico. Unfortunately, the project has been hit with behind-the-scenes drama and has seen its once projected $165 million budget skyrocket to $200+ million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has become a bit of a headache. The outlet has revealed that differences in vision have resulted in competing cuts of the pilot, with Joe and Anthony Russo delivering one version and scribes Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec delivering another. Eventually, it came down to Joe Russo and Appelbaum, who also served as the showrunner on the series, and Amazon ultimately decided to side with the brothers. This resulted in Appelbaum being let go last year ahead of Christmas.

Shortly after his firing, Brian Kirk also left the series, as did line producer Sarah Bradshaw. Kirk is said to have directed five of the seven episodes of Citadel. Amazon ended up bringing in David Weil (Hunters) to re-write the series, with cinematographer Thomas Sigel taking over as director for the extensive reshoots with Joe Russo aiding the shoot. Between the reshoots and creative changes, the series saw its $165 million budget add an additional $75 million, making it one of the most expensive television shows ever behind Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Reshoots are said to have wrapped over the Summer and post-production is officially underway. No release date has been announced.

  • RUMOR: ‘Cruella’ Sequel Will Be a Musical, Taylor Swift Eyed for Antagonist Role

RUMOR: ‘Cruella’ Sequel Will Be a Musical, Taylor Swift Eyed for Antagonist Role

Disney’s Cruella was one of many films to face the pandemic head-on after movie theaters began to re-open following COVID. As theaters continued to struggle, Disney made the move to shift certain films to dual releases with Premier Access on Disney+ allowing films like Black WidowMulan, and Cruella to be rented from home while still playing in theaters. Despite that, Cruella was still able to score quite a successful haul and land a sequel. While news has been sparse regarding the sequel, a new rumor suggests that might soon be changing.

DisInsider has released a rumor that the sequel could be a full-on musical, as the soundtrack from the first film featured an extensive library of songs and original music for the film. The outlet also reports that the film may have even already found its villain, with Taylor Swift reportedly eyed for the role as what is described as “Cruella’s match.” They mention that this could have some correlation to a rumor that popped up on Deumoix a while back, claiming that “This A+ singer who has a minor appearance in Cruella (very tiny, you probably haven’t even noticed) might have a larger part in the sequel.” Swift herself does not physically appear in the first film but what looks to be cut from a magazine of her face can be seen plastered on a wall and scribbled on.

Finally, it’s reported that the sequel could find a home exclusively on Disney+ and will completely avoid releasing in theaters, even after the first film grossed over $230M at the worldwide box office. With D23 around the corner, it is possible we’ll learn more about Creulla very, very soon.

  • Warner Bros. Discovery Cancels DC FanDome for 2022

Warner Bros. Discovery Cancels DC FanDome for 2022

Warner Bros. Discovery will not be hosting a DC FanDome event for DC fans this year. The news comes courtesy of WBD, with the newly merged studio announcing it is excited to engage with fans at numerous comic cons around the world, but that FanDome is not happening.

“With the return of in person events, Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to be able to engage with our fans live at numerous comic-cons around the world and will not be scheduling DC FanDome for 2022.”

    Warner Bros. Discovery

DC FanDome first launched in 2020 thanks in part to COVID-19 making conventions impossible. The event ended up being an eight-hour live stream that saw some of DC’s biggest talent take part in the virtual event for fans to promote upcoming shows and films. While last year’s FanDome wasn’t as exciting, fans were hoping to see the event return this year.

The decision to cancel FanDome for this year, however, shouldn’t be too surprising. Ahead of its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July, it was revealed Warner Bros. Discovery was seeking to cut costs by limiting the properties it brought to the event. In the past, Warner Bros. has been known to go all out with massive screens and talent signings for fans. This year, however, outside of small presentations on both Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, there wasn’t much in store for DC fans at SDCC. New York Comic Con is coming up next month and, per Comicbook.com, the studio is excepted to have some sort of presence at the convention. As it stands, though, it’s unclear whether those plans include a booth or a studio presence.

With a much larger release slate set for next year, perhaps DC FanDome will make a comeback. For now, fans can hope for some news from New York Comic Con in October.

  • REVIEW: ‘Midnight Fight Express’ is The Best Crank Movie Except It’s A Game

REVIEW: ‘Midnight Fight Express’ is The Best Crank Movie Except It’s A Game

In 2006, Lionsgate Films distributed a project touted as one of the most high-octane movies of all time. Crank, an incredibly raunchy action film starring Jason Statham, revolved around a highly-skilled assassin who was poisoned by his rival and subsequently forced to keep his adrenaline pumping in order to survive. The premise was promising, and seemed to indicate there would be plenty of over-the-top violence and radical movement occurring throughout it’s 88 minute runtime. Unfortunately, aside from some deceivingly shaky cameras and the occasional thrown punch, the movie mostly just used unnecessarily offensive dialogue and some truly awful public behavior to illustrate it’s concept. Midnight Fight Express, on the other hand, is everything Crank should have been and more.

An exciting new Beat ‘Em Up from the folks at Humble Games, Midnight Fight Express is actually the rip-roaring brawler it’s title suggests it will be. The basic idea is relatively easy to comprehend, and honestly, the gameplay is too. Babyface, a dormant sleeper agent, is activated by a talking drone and sent out into the streets of a city on the verge of collapse. With the landscape overtaken by an innumerable amount of gangs and crime syndicates, the player controls Babyface as he wipes out every bad guy in sight and begins to learn more about himself and the forces he’s singlehandedly opposing. It’s as straightforward as that, and the game is much better off for it’s commitment to simplicity.

The player starts off with a few base abilities – punch, dodge, and grab. One can either punch their way through a group of evildoers, or pick up a weapon to help bash their heads in. Aside from the occasional firearm, which proved the hardest to control in combat, the amount of damage a weapon does is pretty clearly related to how big it is. If a player would like to take a large man down in fewer hits, they should probably find some sort of massive wrench or metallic baseball bat. If they want to roll around and swing in for a sneak takedown, they should probably beat the snot out of someone with a knife and take that instead. As they clobber their way up the baddie ladder, players will also find themselves able to unlock new moves and techniques that diversify gameplay and aid in taking down boss characters. This keeps the game interesting without overcomplicating what already works.

Of course, while the game is not that hard to understand, it’s also not without it’s challenges. As the player progresses though the city and, eventually, down into the sewers – among other places – they will encounter tougher and tougher opponents. Every time a new class of evil is introduced, the gamer must adjust their playstyle slightly to accommodate the new type of threat. Additionally, not every level plays out exactly the same way. Some feature a bit more traversal, with Babyface jumping around rooftops or fighting his way through subway stations, while others focus more on a specific gimmick. Some standouts include a sequence of tasks involving trains, where the player must fight inside while avoiding a sniper aiming through the windows or use oncoming cars to their advantage, and a mission that takes place entirely within a single bathroom, where Babyface has to clear waves of gang members before he can leave.

After using both a console controller and the keyboard to play, it can probably be said that the controller is best for the way this game handles combat. As the footage and Crank comparison might imply, everything that goes on in Midnight Fight Express is designed to happen very quickly. The brain has to think fast or not at all in order to continue surviving, and a controller seems to be more applicable to that kind of scenario. This might be a matter of preference, but especially when it comes to ensuring one swings a punch in the correct direction, there was a noticeable difference in play quality between the two gaming options.

Last, but certainly not least, Midnight Fight Express allows the player to have a lot of fun with customizable appearances and sandbox elements. Beating up baddies in a variety of fun ways earns the player coin to spend in the main menu’s shop, where they can make Babyface look as cool or goofy as they please. This is a great way to dive further into the spirit of the game, which is also sort of hilarious when it wants to be. As with most Steam games of this generation, a lot of the dialogue is incredibly silly without being anything too uncomfortable to read. Police are idiots, thugs are idiots, bosses are idiots, and even sometimes, the drone can be an idiot too. It’s all a bit cheesy and plays in good respite.

Overall, Midnight Fight Express is a dumb, simple, full-throttle, kick-ass, good time. It’s exactly what it advertises, and can almost be cathartic if the player needs it to be. All the action of John Wick packed with the energy of Crank and wrapped in the scenic views of Escape From New York. Highly recommended to anyone who simply wants to spend an afternoon smacking villains upside the head at a breakneck speed.

  • ‘She-Hulk’ Creative Team Discusses THEE Episode 3 Cameo

‘She-Hulk’ Creative Team Discusses THEE Episode 3 Cameo

One of the biggest talking points coming out of the latest episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the cameo appearance of Megan Thee Stallion. While the news was spoiled on social media just a few days prior to the episode release, it still has served as a pleasant surprise for a number of viewers. While sitting down with Entertainment Weekly, various members of the creative team discussed the process of how the star rapper’s cameo came to be. Head writer Jessica Gao talked about the challenge of deciding who would best fit this role and the relatively surprising name who pitched the idea of Megan Thee Stallion.

We didn’t even know that we could dream that big. When we wrote the script, all we knew was we needed to have a female celebrity who was very famous, very successful, and very beautiful. But we didn’t know if it was going to be an actress, or a model, or a musician. And depending on who it was, we knew we’d probably have to tweak the story a little bit to fit whoever we ended up casting…Jameela (Jamil) one day floated the idea of Megan and the moment she said that, and the moment we realized that that could be a possibility, we were like, ‘Stop everything. That’s it. The conversation’s done. We only care about Megan now. And if Megan will do it, then that settles it.

    Jessica Gao

From this, it’s clear how much of an influence Megan Thee Stallion has had on the cultural zeitgeist and her epitomizing what the show was looking for in that role. Director Kat Coiro further elaborated on what made Megan a massively exciting option for the show’s creative team.

The character was scripted as a celebrity who never in a billion years would we believe would date Dennis Bukowski. When Jameela suggested Megan, we all lost our minds. She’s perfect on so many levels, just as a beautiful young celebrity who would never date Dennis Bukowski, but also as a powerful woman who embodies a lot of what She-Hulk embodies. And then it was a little cherry on top that Tatiana (Maslany) is the world’s biggest Megan fan. As soon as that name came up, there was nobody else.

    Kat Coiro

The further notion of Tatiana Maslany being a massive fan of Megan Thee Stallion certainly helped elevate the scene in portraying Jennifer Walters’ undying adulation towards the rapper. And as learned in the interview, the feeling of love was mutual with Megan Thee Stallion towards Marvel Studios.

We found out that Megan loves Marvel and superhero stuff, so it was incredible. It really came together very quickly, and we didn’t even have time to stop and just stand in awe at the fact that this was actually happening. It was everyone’s dream come true, especially Tatiana.

    Jessica Gao

Ultimately, the appearance of Megan Thee Stallion in this past episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law provided a large source of levity for not just the characters on screen, but the creative time sitting behind it. The third episode of the Disney+ was officially released on Thursday, September 1st.

‘Harry Potter’ Actor Joins Cast of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

Actor Brendan Gleeson, who portrayed Alastor ‘MadEye’ Moody in the Harry Potter films has joined Todd Phillips’ sequel to 2019 Joker.

The sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will see Joaquin Phoenix return as clown turned angry clown, Arthur Fleck. Phoenix will be joined in the film by Lady Gaga, who is reported to be playing Harley Quinn. Zazie Betts is also reportedly returning to reprise her role from the first film.

Production on Joker: Folie à Deux is expected to begin this December ahead of an October 2024 release. Early rumors suggest that the film will be set in Gotham’s infamous Arkham Asylum and that it will be, at least in parts, a musical. The trade reporting Gleeson’s inclusion in the film was unable to discern a role for the well-known Irish actor.

  • ‘The Rings of Power’ Release Schedule

‘The Rings of Power’ Release Schedule

Amazon Prime’s $715M journey to Middle-earth is finally set to debut on the streaming service. The great news is that the premiere will come a day earlier than expected and that fans will be given a two-episode introduction to the series. But when can fans tune in for the remaining episodes? And what time can they expect the first two to drop tonight? We have answers.

    Episodes 1 and 2

The first two episodes of The Rings of Power are set to drop on Amazon Prime at 6 PM PT/9 PM ET on Thursday, September 1st.

    Episodes 3 through 8

Season 1 of The Rings of Power will consist of 8 episodes, each of which is expected to run roughly one hour. Following the two-episode debut, the series will release a new episode each Friday as Amazon Prime has elected not to follow the binge model for the series. The weekly release schedule is as follows:

Episode 3 will release on Friday, September 9th
Episode 4 will release on Friday, September 16th
Episode 5 will release on Friday, September 23rd
Episode 6 will release on Friday, September 30th
Episode 7 will release on Friday, October 7th
Episode 8, the Season 1 finale, will release on October 14th

    How Many Seasons?

The Rings of Power takes place roughly 1000 years before the time of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films, leaving all kinds of room to tell some great stories at a time when Middle-earth was a very different place than what people remember from the films. With that in mind, the showrunners have laid out a five-season plan. With production on Season 2 set to get underway soon, it’s possible that fans will only have to wait until next Fall to catch Season 2 and that the entire series might conclude in 2026.
