What I Heard This Week: Namora and ‘BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER’

Every now and then I come across some information the veracity of which can be confirmed by a second source. What happens FAR more often is that I come across some information that while believable and from trustworthy sources, cannot be confirmed by other sources for various reasons. Typically, when the second scenario occurs, I move on and forget about the information unless, in rare instances, it turns out to be proven true somewhere down the road. With that in mind, understand that this piece of news is NOT confirmed by Disney, Marvel or any other source and, for now, should fall under the category of rumor until further confirmation comes through.

We’ve known for a while now that Marvel Studios was looking to cast two major, supporting characters in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Illuminerdi were first to report that the casting calls for two Mayan warriors, codenamed Zyanya and Cadmael, were for the roles of Namora and Attuma, two major Atlantean characters from the comics set to join Tenoch Huerta’s Namor in the 2022 sequel. Now, we may be able to associate a name with one of those roles. I heard this week that actress Mabel Cadena has joined the cast as Namora, the cousin of Namor and one of the original members of the Agents of Atlas!

    Mabel Cadena

The 30-year old Mexican actress checks all the boxes for the role of Namora. Marvel Studios was looking for an Hispanic or Latino actress, 20-40, with previous experience in physical roles. Cadena, who recently starred in Dance of the 41 (now available on Netflix) and Hernan (now available on Amazon Prime), has been in the Atlanta area and been hitting the gym to prep for the role.

Huerta also recently began interacting with Cadena on Instagram, which may add a little more fuel to the rumor mill fires, if you’re into that sort of thing. Again, at this point there is no confirmation from any official source, so this should be treated as a rumor; however, a lot of supporting evidence does exist.

Later this month, Disney Plus will finally launch in Singapore, making over 500 films and 15,000 episodes of streaming content available in the country where 6 of the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, including the top 3, are Marvel Studios films. Ahead of the launch, Disney held a press junket yesterday via video chat and Marvel Studios One-Above-All, Kevin Fiege, gave an overview of his studio’s offerings and took a few questions, one of which led to an exciting bit of news when asked if it was “high time we get a Southeast Asian Marvel superhero on Disney+.” Feige replied, “I think it is. And I think you won’t have to wait there very long at all. We’ve announced a number of shows and we’ve got more in the works.

With WandaVision now streaming on Disney Plus, fans have gotten their first taste of how Marvel Studios plans to use the streaming service to expand its Marvel Cinematic Multiverse over the next several years. The studio has a dozen or more properties on its slate over the next few years and, according to Feige, more that we don’t know about including one that will potentially include a Southeast Asian hero. Interestingly enough, 2019 saw Marvel Comics relaunch an old team with a brand new look in Agents of Atlas. The book, written by Greg Pak, saw Jimmy Woo (played wonderfully in the MCU by Randall Park) assemble a team of Asian heroes, including Filipino hero Wave. Just about a year ago, rumors circulated that Marvel Studios was looking to develop the property as a Disney + series. The return of Woo in WandaVision along with the debut of Shang-Chi later this year and this response from Feige could be signs that the studio is indeed headed in that direction.

Production on the Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings will shift stateside next week with scenes being filmed in San Francisco. Production on the film has been ongoing in Australia for the past couple of months and may still continue there even as stunt crews begin work in California this week in preparation for some stunt sequences that will be filmed next week.

The MCU is no stranger to filming in the 415 as scenes were filmed in the San Francisco Bay Area for both Ant-Man and Ant-Man and The Wasp, opening the door for a possible connection between the two franchises, perhaps via Jimmy Woo whose comic book counterpart leads the Agents of Atlas from their secret base, the Temple of Atlas, located in caverns beneath the city. Earlier this year, it was rumored that Marvel Studios was developing Agents of Atlas as a Disney Plus series, and given the team’s recent resurgence in the comics, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them join the MCU at some point.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is currently set to hit theaters July 9, 2021.
