‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Renewed by Paramount+

Paramount+ has opted to renew Criminal Minds: Evolution for a second season. The news was announced on Thursday, with the streamer noting how Criminal Minds fans have embraced this new series.

In a statement to the press, Paramount Streaming chief programming officer Tanya Giles expressed excitement over all of the “twisted storylines” yet to come for the series. “We’re thrilled to bring even more twisted storylines to our loyal fans of Criminal Minds: Evolution with the order of another season,” she said. “The series has always been a consistent top performer for Paramount+ and fans have quickly embraced this new season with its more serialized elements. There are still many dark twists and turns yet to come for the BAU this season, and we can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store.”

Evolution is the continuation of the original series, Criminal Minds, which ended its run after fifteen seasons in 2020. The new series brings back stars Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster as their characters seek to locate a killer (played by Zach Gilford) who has “used the pandemic to build a network of other serial killers.”

Since its debut in November, Criminal Minds: Evolution, has become one of Paramount+’s top five original shows and has driven increased viewership for the original as well. (Of note, the original series is also available to stream on Hulu.) The first season, which consists of 10 episodes, is set to conclude on Feb. 9th.

In the past, Criminal Minds saw the team solve the case usually by the episode’s end. In the revival, though, the series is expected to take a more serialized approach. Zach Gilford Boards ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival

The Paramount+ revival of Criminal Minds has a new name and a new actor. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Zach Gilford has joined the series in a key recurring role. He’ll play Elias Voit, an analyst for a cyber-security firm who has a dark side and an obsession with death. More interestingly, though, the series has received a new name. The revival is now titled Criminal Minds: Evolution.

The actor is set to join the previously confirmed returning cast of Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster. Not returning for the revival are Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney, with the latter currently starring on Prime Video’s adaptation of The Wheel of Time.

While the revival is bringing back much of its core cast, the series is making one major change. In the past, Criminal Minds saw the team solve the case usually by the episode’s end. In the revival, though, the series will take a more serialized approach. Per the logline, Evolution will see the team “come up against their greatest threat yet, an UnSub who has used the pandemic to build a network of other serial killers. As the world opens back up and the network goes operational, the team must hunt them down, one murder at a time.”

Gilford is perhaps best known for his work on shows such as Friday Night Lights, Good Girls and Midnight Mass. The actor has also appeared in films like The Purge: Anarchy and Devil’s Due. Next up for Gilford are the Netflix series The Midnight Club and Mike Flanagan‘s The Fall of the House of Usher.

Criminal Minds: Evolution hails from showrunner Erica Messer, who worked on the original hit series. Production on the revival is currently underway.

  • Paramount+ Officially Orders the ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival to Series

Paramount+ Officially Orders the ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival to Series

In February of this year, it was reported that Paramount+ was nearing deals with some of the core cast of Criminal Minds for the forthcoming revival. Now, the series has been given a formal pick-up order for the revival for a ten episode season. Six cast members have also been confirmed to return as Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster have signed on for the new series.

The news comes courtesy of Deadline, with the outlet reporting that Erica Messer, the show’s longtime executive producer and showrunner, is also set to return. Her deal is said to have been closed months ago. It is said that the six cast members signing on to return was contingent on Messer signing a pact with ABC Signature where she is under an overall deal.

Mantegna, who joined the original series during its third season, teased the revival’s pickup with a Tweet on Tuesday. “Just doing a little inspection today for an upcoming project,” he wrote on a photo of him on set.

Criminal Minds ended its fifteen season run in 2020. Since then, rumors have continued to circulate suggesting a revival was in the works. However, the first real news of a revival didn’t come until early this year. Matthew Gray Gubler, who played Spencer Reid in the series, and Daniel Henney, who played Matt Simmons, are currently not expected to join the rest of the returning cast.

Production on the Criminal Minds revival will kickoff on Aug. 21st in Los Angeles.

  • Six Cast Members Nearing Deals for ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival on Paramount+

Six Cast Members Nearing Deals for ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival on Paramount+

Wheels up, viewers. The Criminal Minds revival is breaking ground at Paramount+ as six cast members are nearing deals for their returns.

Deadline announced on Friday that Paramount Plus’ forthcoming revival of Criminal Minds is slowly moving ahead. As it stands, a deal is still being made with executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer. However, cast members are nearing deals to return should the project officially move forward. Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster will reprise their role in the revival, should deals finalize.

It is of note, however, these new contracts, while multi-year, will not be exclusive contracts. This will allow the cast members to still take on other projects — including large recurring roles and series regular roles in a limited series. All of this, naturally, will hinge on their availability. Per Deadline, all six actors are merely waiting on Messer’s deal to finalize to sign on.

As for fan-favorite Matthew Gray Gubler, it’s unlikely he’ll return as Spencer Reid. While Daniel Henney, who played Matt Simmons, is currently starring in Amazon’s Wheel of Time, making his return complicated.
