Chloé Zhao Reacts to ‘Eternals 2’ Rumors

The rumor mill for Marvel has been going in full force. While many complain there are too many projects rolling out, it seems like there are countless more that are simply rumors without any actual release or even an official announcement. Still, among those that have long been hinted at potentially being in development was the sequel to Chloé Zhao‘s Eternals.

Up until now, it was just a rumor based on some theories. The first film wasn’t a critical darling and faced similar harsh criticism like the recent Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Yet, there was still a lot of potential in exploring these characters and the vastly unique sci-fi world offered at the end of the story. When asked in an interview with Hollywood Reporter if there was any truth to these rumors, Zhao gave a curious defensive reaction.

It’s not the kind of reaction you’d usually get, as many would just talk about the possibility of directing a sequel and returning to that world. Yet, the very direct “no comment” opens up the possibility that there are talks that she’s not going to risk talking about. Of course, that is also just an overanalysis of how some tended to react when they didn’t want to risk giving away any information. Still, we’ll have to probably wait quite sometime before we find out what exactly the future has in store for the Eternals moving forward.

  • ‘Eternals 2’ Reportedly a Go at Marvel Studios; ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Set for Production

‘Eternals 2’ Reportedly a Go at Marvel Studios; ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Set for Production

As Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania join it as the most harshly reviewed film in Marvel Studios’ history, a new report indicates that 2021’s Eternals will have a sequel. Though the critical response to the film was poor and audience scores didn’t indicate it was a big hit with fans in theaters, it has found a new life on Disney Plus becoming the streaming service’s biggest film debut. It now seems possible that the streaming success of Eternals may have given the franchise new life.

According to insider KC Walsh, an Eternals sequel has been given the green light at Marvel Studios and has recently been added to the production schedule alongside the previously announced sequel to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.

Though no further details were provided about when the films might go into production, a quick peek at Marvel Studios’ existing slate would indicate that fans should not expect Eternals 2 or Shang-Chi 2 until 2025 at the earliest. As it stands, there are 2 untitled Marvel Studios films scheduled to release in 2025 and 3 in 2026. With news breaking now about these two projects, it’d would be reasonable to assume under normal circumstances that they’d be ready in time for 2025 but times they are a changing.

More Evidence for ‘Eternals’ Sequel Surfaces

No matter where one lands on the Phase 4 debate, Marvel Studios has ventured out quite a bit with their latest entries to avoid the franchise growing stale on the formula the Internet has proclaimed it suffers from since its inception. Among one of the most divisive entries was Eternals, a film by Chloe Zhao that tried a little something different with how it depicts heroism and the galactic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, more evidence has surfaced that Marvel Studios may have plans for a sequel to Eternals, as Don Lee a.k.a. Ma Dong-seok‘s Big Punch Entertainment, his management agency, has released a curious public statement teasing some of his upcoming projects. The Twitter account @UPDATEETERNALS translated the message which hints at some of the upcoming projects including Criminal City 4, Wilderness, Crime City 3, and, you guessed it, Eternals 2.

There are still quite a few spots in Phase 6 that haven’t been given a project and we haven’t heard from Zhao in a while regarding what she’s working on next. While critics and fans have been somewhat harsh on the project since its release, a recent movement has been sharing their enjoyment of the picture now that Phase 4 has wrapped up.

There were also a lot of open questions we were left with after the final moments of that film, especially with how Arishem teased his judgment of Earth at a later point. If rumors surrounding the plot of Captain America: New World Order are true, there’s a big chance that we witness the consequences in an Eternals sequel.

  • Kumail Nanjiani Cast Some Doubt on the Status of ‘Eternals 2’

Kumail Nanjiani Cast Some Doubt on the Status of ‘Eternals 2’

Marvel Studios Eternals served as a departure from the “Marvel formula” that has often been at the center of criticism of MCU films. Ironically enough, the departure from that formula became the center of criticism of Eternals, leaving fans wondering when, and maybe even if, a sequel might happen. Earlier this year, however, Patton Oswalt, who voiced Pip the Troll in a sequence that could set the stage for a potential sequel, claimed that a sequel was in the works. Shortly after that statement, it seemed clear that Oswalt was just repeating something he’d read online and not prematurely sharing any official info.

In an interview with The Playlist, Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani gave a little insight into what the situation with Oswalt may have been all about.

I have no idea. I don’t think Patton was right. I think that there was a hoax website – one of those where it’s like one letter off from the real one. They tweeted it, and it spread around and I think that’s what Patton saw.

    Kumail Nanjiani

While Nanjiani obviously isn’t able to speak for Oswalt, it does sound like he may have a little better grip on exactly what happened. While Eternals 2 doesn’t seem to be a sure thing, Nanjiani’s Kingo, who was one of the film’s brightest spots, will be referenced in two upcoming MCU projects and, according to the star, he’d love to continue playing him.

I honestly don’t know anything. I would love for Kingo to come back. I love playing that character…That one’s very fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love? You’re just in a good mood the entire time.

Having a group of characters such as the Eternals in the shared universe without them ever showing up again or interacting with corners and characters is certainly hard to imagine; however, there’s no guarantee that any future interactions or arcs involving the characters will be part of a sequel. Some of the characters have been Avengers in the past and with two Avengers team-ups on the slate, they could show up there as the Multiverse Saga concludes. Until official word comes down from Marvel Studios, it remains best practice to remember that the actors are often the last one’s to know what’s going on behind the scenes.
