  • ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Holds On to the Top Spot as ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Surprises at the Box Office

‘Super Mario Bros.’ Holds On to the Top Spot as ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Surprises at the Box Office

It looks like Nintendo has fully dominated the box office, as The Super Mario Bros. Movie faces another soft drop in its third weekend and has pulled in $58.2M domestically and another $70M internationally. As such, the film is now at a strong $434.33M stateside and $437.5M in international markets, which sums up to a powerful $871.8M. It’s interesting that the film has such a strong weekend hold but seems to fizzle out a bit during the week after a strong 81% drop on Monday. Still, it seems that the film just pulls in multiple generations to relieve their gaming childhood.

That is not all, as Evil Dead Rise, the counter-programming for the weekend, has been released and finds its way into quite the strong start at $23.5M. That is quite the number considering it only cost around $15M and proves once again just how powerful horror is in the market. It’s also a sigh of relief for Warner Bros. who originally wanted to release this film as a direct-to-streaming offering on HBO Max before the new leadership changed gears.

It received a B CinemaScore but that has become quite common for anything with horror elements or gore in it. So, it should be taken lightly and we’ll see how its legs develop. Evil Dead Rise has the task to beat 2013’s Evil Dead reboot which had a slightly higher opening but also a just as slightly higher budget. If it has strong legs it might even surpass the $97.5M budget but Super Mario Bros. Movie is taking up most of the market at the moment.

Guy Ritchie’s latest film, The Covenant, sadly isn’t doing too hot as it opened to a soft $6M which won’t help much even with an A CinemaScore. Dramas aimed at adult audiences and regular family films without a bigger nostalgic draw have still been struggling a bit at the box office. Even after a good early push, Beau is Afraid has stumbled to $2.7M while expanding its theater count which isn’t a good sign for its $35M budget.

  • ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Director Teases a Film “Fueled by Blood”

‘Evil Dead Rise’ Director Teases a Film “Fueled by Blood”

Evil Dead is back, and one of the few projects to actually benefit from Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent mismanagement. Originally, the film was set to become an HBO Max original and they didn’t scrap it like some other unlucky projects. Instead, Evil Dead Rise by director Lee Cronin was made a theatrically exclusive release and 2023 will finally give us the return to a much-loved horror franchise.

Sadly, Cronin can’t give us any details regarding what we can expect from the Deadite’s return, but he makes one clear promise: there shall be blood! The franchise has never shied away from making good use of bloodshed and it seems that the film “straps you onto a rocket that’s fueled by blood” in a recent interview with Empire.

It straps you onto a rocket that’s fueled by blood. You can either get off or you stay on ’til it explodes.

    Lee Cronin

A rocket fueled by blood sounds exactly like what one would want from an Evil Dead entry. It’s unclear still if this is a continuation of the original trilogy or perhaps we might even see this as a direct sequel to the remake from 2013. It’s crazy to think that it has taken another 10+ years to get to this point and hopefully a trailer isn’t too far anymore to get a good feeling for how this project might stay true to the previous entries.

  • Sam Raimi Reveals How ‘Evil Dead’ Influenced ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Sam Raimi Reveals How ‘Evil Dead’ Influenced ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Since it’s very announcement, Marvel Studios has been describing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as their first true foray into the horror genre. As such, it made a lot of sense when the company hired Sam Raimi to replace Scott Derrickson as the film’s director. The iconic filmmaker has experience with both comic book projects and horror movies, and has even mixed the two before in 1990’s Darkman. However, it was apparently his work on the famed Evil Dead franchise that helped him the most throughout filming of Doctor Strange. In a recent interview with Fandom, Raimi explained:

It was really nice to have the experience of having made those horror films because I could take my knowledge of building suspense and delivering scares, and when it got spooky in Multiverse of Madness, I could apply those techniques.

    Sam Raimi

The latest MCU film is said to be filled with plenty of ghastly moments and jump scares. Raimi is known for his fast-paced camera work and up-close visuals, which the film’s star Rachel McAdams confirmed in her own quote:

He’s really great at describing what is happening in his mind’s eye, thank goodness, because, you can see it all sort of swirling in there. And you’re like [whispering] ‘What are we doing? What’s happening?’ And then he’s very good about taking you through the whole day and what this will look like and what’s coming towards you and the build up of a scene and how scary it’s going to be. You sort of start to understand, like, ‘Oh, this is my part in this. And this is how I can help him make it as scary as possible.’ That was kind of fun. And doing super, super tight shots – like, way up in your face! But once you know why, that’s kind of exciting.

Fans will see just how terrifying Doctor Strange can be when Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6th.

  • First Details for HBO Max’s ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Film Revealed

First Details for HBO Max’s ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Film Revealed

It looks like Evil Dead is back, as Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are developing a brand new entry in the iconic franchise for HBO Max. The original released back in 1981 and is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary. It has been a mainstay in a popular culture far beyond the original trilogy with a 2013 remake and the Ash vs. Evil Dead series. Sadly, it seems the next entry won’t be heading back to theaters, as Evil Dead Rise will become an exclusive HBO Max series.

This continuation will focus on two estranged sisters, played by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, whose reunion gets interrupted by flesh-possessing demons. The new entry will be directed by The Hole in the Ground‘s Lee Cronin, who will also write its script. Raimi shared his enthusiasm returning to the franchise:

I’m thrilled to bring ‘Evil Dead’ back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film. The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise

Campbell also shared his excitement for the two young actresses joining the franchise and the blood-soaked shoes they will have to fill. They haven’t mentioned if Ash Williams will have a role of some kind in the film, as he has been the face of the franchise. He even had a brief cameo in a post-credit sequence from the 2013 remake. It’ll be interesting to see what new direction the franchise is heading once it hits HBO Max.

  • Ash Williams Returns in ‘Evil Dead: The Game’

Ash Williams Returns in ‘Evil Dead: The Game’

Looks like The Game Awards had a nice surprise for horror fans. A brand new trailer was released for a horror game focused on everyone’s favorite man from Tennessee, Ash Williams. Yes, the Evil Dead franchise is getting its very own game series. This is quite the reveal, as Ash had been a popular fan addition for Mortal Kombat‘s next Kombat Pack. The fact they are developing a game, and Bruce Campbell voicing his iconic character shows that you can’t kill the king.
