Chris Pratt’s ‘Garfield’ Adds Brett Goldstein and Bowen Yang

Many will remember the upcoming animated Garfield film mostly for the memes that were generated out of the coincidence of Chris Pratt not only voicing this film#s main character but also the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. It turned into a joke that Pratt was set to voice any character that was animated. Still, the film is moving forward and has added quite a cast since its initial announcement.

Ving Rhames, Hannah Waddingham, Cecily Strong, Nicholas Hoult, and even Samuel L. Jackson have joined the production in various roles. Now, the new animated film has also added SNL’s Bowen Yang alongside Ted Lasso Emmy winner Brett Goldstein. David Reynolds of Finding Nemo fame has written the script with Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove. The Emperor’s New Groove and Chicken Little director Mark Dindal is set to adapt it for the silver screen.

The film will adapt the famous cartoon cat from Jim Davis, who made Jon Arbuckle’s life a living hell alongside the lovable dog Odie. In 2004, the first live-action. and animated hybrid was released with Bill Murray in the title role. The series has been going strong ever since it started in 1978, but even developed its rather curious fanbase online with the concept of Gorefield taking the adorable cat and adding some Lovecraftian elements to it. The upcoming film is very likely to stay away from that idea and offer a child-friendly film, it’s been an interesting rabbit hole exploring the cat’s influence on the internet.

  • Samuel L. Jackson is Joining Chris Pratt in Garfield

Samuel L. Jackson is Joining Chris Pratt in Garfield

The new animated Garfield film is being produced by Alcon Entertainment. The movie is based on Jim Davis’ iconic cartoon strip of the same name and will follow Garfield, the cynical and lazy orange cat, and his interactions with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and fellow pet, Odie. Jackson will be playing a new character crafted for the film – Garfield’s father, Vic.

Mark Dindal (Chicken Little) is directing the film from a script by David Reynolds (Finding Nemo). Garfield will be animated and produced by DNEG Animation, which was also behind the 2021 film Ron’s Gone Wrong. Also producing the film are John Cohen and Steven P. Wegner, who are producing alongside Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

Up next for the always busy Jackson is Secret Invasion, which he recently filmed for Marvel Studios and Disney+. He can currently be seen in the Apple TV+ series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, which is based on the novel by bestselling author Walter Mosley. He’s also set to appear in The Marvels, as well as Matthew Vaughn’s spy actioner Argylle.

Sony Pictures will be distributing Garfield in all major territories with the exception of China. As it stands, Garfield does not yet have a release date.

Chris Pratt Voicing Garfield in A New Animated Film

It looks like Chris Pratt has become Hollywood’s go-to actor to voice ongoing projects. He recently was announced to tackle Mario in the long-awaited Illumination animated film based on Nintendo’s popular Super Mario Bros. franchise. Now, it seems he’ll also bring another childhood classic to life, as Alcon Entertainment and Sony Pictures hired the Guardians of the Galaxy actor to voice Garfield in an upcoming animated feature. Oscar nominee David Reynolds wrote the script and Mark Dindal is set to direct the upcoming adaptation.

The duo worked on the fan-favorite The Emperor’s New Groove, which the upcoming film might take some cues from given their work on it. Reynolds also worked on Finding Nemo for Pixar while Dindal had some experience with Disney adapting the Chicken Little film. It’s not a small task to adapt Jim Davis‘ popular creation that has existed since 1978. Alcon currently holds the rights to the project with Davis acting as an executive producer alongside Amuse’s Bridget McMeel and Craig Sost.

It’s not the first adaptation by Hollywood to bring the character to life. He famously was voiced by Bill Murray in the 2004 live-action hybrid film and even in its sequel, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle the famously lazy cat and his general attitude in a film. There’s also his extensive cast of characters introduced with later works that may or may not appear in the project. It’s still in early development. So, we’ll see what is in store for this project.
