Gerard Butler to Reprise His ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Role in Live-Action Adaptation

Universal is full steam ahead in bringing its iconic animated trilogy How To Train Your Dragon into live-action. And it seems like they got one major addition to the cast, who is quite familiar with the material. Gerard Butler will join the live-action adaptation as Hiccup’s father. This is not his first time playing the role, as he also voiced him in the animated films. He’ll join Mason Thames and Nico Parker, who are taking on the roles of Hiccup and Astrid in Dean DeBlois‘ film.

Disney has become infamous for a live-action adaptation of their classic Disney properties, so there are some concerns about what Universal has planned with a live-action adaptation of their animated film from 2010. It is great though to see them bring back some familiar faces to once again play their characters and it has the original director involved, as Dean DeBlois also worked on the animated projects based on the 2003 book series.

Butler’s return also opens up the question of how close they will try to stick to the original designs, or simply try to make the live-action its distinct project. They can re-use similar elements and the overall story, but they can still try to give it a more distinct visual identity to make it stand out. However, who knows if we might also see others from the animated film return in the live-action adaptation.

Live-Action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Finds its Hiccup and Astrid

While many have been hoping Disney’s attempt to bring their classic animated franchises to live-action would end, Dreamworks has just started with their own attempt. The animated film How to Train Your Dragon is heading back to the silver screen but not with an animated sequel or spinoff, but rather a live-action adaptation. With a March 14th release date in 2025, Dean DeBlois is attached to direct and it seems they found their leading duo.

Deadline has reported that Mason Thames and Nico Parker will take on the roles of Hiccup and Astrid in Universel’s upcoming adaptation. They will retell the story of Hiccup’s journey as a young Viking that ends up bonding with a dragon, who he eventually names Toothless. Dreamwork’s original trilogy was nominated for Academy Awards and a Golden Globe, so it’s not surprising they want this adaptation featuring human characters to make its way to live-action

Thames just had his first big hit with The Black Phone staring opposite Ethan Hawke. He even got the lead role in Incoming and is also going to star alongside Mel Gibson in Boys of Summer. Parker just had a role in The Last of Us alongside Pedro Pascal. She’s also appeared in the live-action Dumbo film by Tim Burton and is set to appear in HBO’s The Third Day.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Live-Action Film in Development

No, you read that right. Dean DeBlois is seemingly set on adapting How to Train Your Dragon into live-action for Universal. It seems they are dead-set on repeating the same mistakes as Disney that somehow still end up pulling billions at the box office, such as the “live-action” adaptation of The Lion King and Aladdin. It seems Universal Pictures is dead set on this franchise revival in a new format and already dated the film for a March 14th, 2025 release.

The surprising thing is that this franchise does have the potential to adapt its own take on the franchise without just recreating the story of Hiccup and Toothless, but it seems they are deadset on remaking the trilogy that was released throughout the 2010s. It’s a shame given that live-action adaptations can be more than just straight adaptations of existing stories, especially in more expansive worlds like these.

As the franchise mostly focuses on the relationship between Vikings and dragons, it does lend itself to live-action. It should also be noted that DeBlois directed the animated films and has an extensive history with the project. It’s also already in the middle of its casting process. So, they’ve been working on this for some time and it isn’t just a quick announcement. We’ll have to see how this attempt at a live-action adaptation of an animated classic works out.

  • First Look at Hulu’s ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Sequel Series ‘Dragons: The Nine Realms’

First Look at Hulu’s ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Sequel Series ‘Dragons: The Nine Realms’

Hulu and Peacock have been busy working on the next major project for DreamWorks Animation. The much-beloved How to Train Your Dragon series is getting a new sequel that’ll switch things up in an interesting way. No longer are we exploring the times of the Vikings, but will not set out 1,300 years into the future, when dragons are now nothing more than legends. The first trailer has dropped for the series alongside a synopsis of what we can expect from the newest entry titled Dreamworks Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Set 1,300 years after the events of How To Train Your Dragon, dragons are now just a legend to the modern world. When a geological anomaly opens up an immense, miles-deep fissure in the Earth’s surface, scientists from all over the world gather at a new research facility to study the mysterious phenomenon. Soon a group of misfit kids, brought to the site by their parents, uncover the truth about dragons and where they’ve been hiding — a secret they must keep to themselves to protect what they’ve discovered.

The concept of going into the future is a promising one, but it’s shame we won’t revisit some of our beloved characters. Yet, the trailer does hint at one of Toothless’ offspring still living in the modern age and will be joined by a new group of dragons that become friends with these kids. The series will continue the CG-animation style from the original and bring a new adventure to life later this month.

The series will premiere December 23rd and includes Voltron: Legendary Defenders‘ Jeremy Shada, 10 Things I Hate About You‘s Julia Stiles, Marcus Scribner of Black-ish fame, Aimee Garcia from Lucifer, Fuller House‘s Ashley Liao, Lauren Tom from The Joy Luck Club, as well as The Good Place‘s D’arcy Carden, One Day at a Time’s Justina MachadO, and Keston John, who some might recognize from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
