‘LEGO Movie’ Producer Teases “Different Art Form” for Upcoming Franchise Reboot

Many have wondered what exactly the future has in store for the LEGO Movie franchise. In 2014, Warner Bros. surprised many when directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller offered a very different kind of animated film that was made with a lot of love to recreate some of our most nostalgic memories and even had a heart-felt storyline included.

It was followed by a sequel five years later with The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part and two spinoffs, The LEGO Batman and The LEGO Ninjago. Yet, Warner Bros.s swiftly lost the rates to the iconic franchise that was just getting ready to grow and we have seen a project since. There have been hints that a reboot of some kind is in development and luckily producer Dan Lin has given us our first tease in a podcast episode with The Ankler.

We know we have to switch it up & take to a different art form that’s still true to LEGO, we should have some announcements soon… I think we’ve reinvented it in a cool way.

    Dan Lin

The mention of a “different art form” is a rather surprising hint that we shouldn’t expect a franchise that is anywhere close to what the original was. We still have no details on whoever may be directing the project or even if a writer is attached. In a time where creative staff is announced a long time in advance, it’s the first time we’ve seen a new franchise reboot based on such a high IP keeping it really close to the chest. We’ll see just how soon the “soon” is from the interview.

  • First Look at ‘Avatar’s LEGO Set Ahead of ‘The Way of the Water’s Release

First Look at ‘Avatar’s LEGO Set Ahead of ‘The Way of the Water’s Release

It may have taken way longer than anyone suspected, but a new LEGO set for Avatar has been unveiled. While the first entry of James Cameron‘s sci-fi epic was released back in 2009, the sequel The Way of the Water is only a few more months away from hitting theaters. Now, LEGO has unveiled its new Avatar-themed set during LEGO Con 2022. The set is titled “Toruk Makto & Tree of Souls” which will be made available to purchase on October 1st, 2022, as shared through Jay’s Brick Blog.

They have also shared an image of what the set looks like built, highlighting the many figurines included in the model. It’s surprising that with the title of The Way of the Water, they wouldn’t include an aquatic set going in.

LEGO sets have become a common tie-in to big blockbuster releases. So, it’s no surprise that they will do the same with the latest Avatar film. There’s a lot riding on its release, as not only will it kick off various others but it also has the legacy of the biggest movie release ever to compete with. Either the film will fall short of the original film’s overall box office, or it could even surpass it if the long wait between films has proven with the recent release Top Gun Maverick. It’ll be interesting to see what the box office has planned for a film entering its franchise stage.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ LEGO Box Set Offers Closer Look at Scarlet Witch

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ LEGO Box Set Offers Closer Look at Scarlet Witch

Just a few days ago, a Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness LEGO set has found its way online featuring a first look at Gargantos. It gave us a small glimpse at the packaging with a closer look at Xochitl Gomez as Miss America. Well, it seems that the box set has found its way online in higher quality thanks to @RPK_NEWS1, which also gives us a closer look at Scarlet Witch’s design for the upcoming film, as she stands alongside America, Strange, and Wong even as she was missing in the LEGO Set.

It looks like her design has remained mostly the same from when we saw her in WandaVision. Perhaps it highlights how the various Disney+ shows also help prepare costumes and designs ahead of their appearance in other projects. Adds a nice level of synergy, such as Abomination having a role in Shang-Chi ahead of his return in the She-Hulk series. Of course, there’s a chance they did make a few small changes, but we’ll only find out once we get a closer look at the full design.

  • Chris McKay Reveals First Details of his Scrapped ‘LEGO Batman’ Sequel

Chris McKay Reveals First Details of his Scrapped ‘LEGO Batman’ Sequel

It almost seems like it was yesterday when The LEGO Batman Movie premiered on the silver screen. Sadly, it’s already been around four years since the animated film was released and gave us a very unique but heartfelt take on the iconic Batman mythos. There haven’t been any announced plans for a sequel since and it seems that director Chris McKay didn’t want to keep it a secret anymore. It seems that there once was a sequel in development that tragically got scrapped even with the talented duo of Community‘s Dan Harmon and Loki‘s Michael Waldron. The latter even took to Twitter to share the script’s first page unveiling the title as Lego Superfriends.

The script, according to McKay, would explore Batman’s relationship with the Justice League that was only briefly glimpsed in the first film. He described it as a Boogie Nights-esque comedy and goes on to offer some details on what he, Harmon, and Waldron were working on:

Dan (Harmon) and (Michael) Waldron had done a first draft of the script that was really great. It was truly epic… both from an action standpoint and from a story standpoint. The structure was Godfather Part 2… a story about Batman’s relationship to the Justice League (and Superman) now as well as the formative moments of the Justice League (and Batman’s relationship with Superman) then.

The reason we never got a sequel was due to Universal purchasing the rights to the LEGO franchise. As the original LEGO Movie got published through Warner Bros., they had access to their extensive library. Many might recall the various cameos from the LEGO Batman finale. As such, any future LEGO properties can include franchises like The Fast and Furious or Jurassic World, but we can’t expect a Batman sequel. Hopefully, Warner Bros. ends up buying the rights back to continue the franchise.
