  • Ryan Gosling in Negotiations for ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Prequel

Ryan Gosling in Negotiations for ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Prequel

Ryan Gosling is seemingly set to reunite with his Barbie co-star Margot Robbie in a film set within the Warner Bros Ocean’s Eleven franchise. The film is set to be directed by Jay Roach with the script being written by Carrie Solomon. The project has not yet been greenlit by the Warner Bros Discovery executive team, but they are targeting an early 2023 start of production should things come together. Word from insiders has been that this project will be a prequel film set in the 1960s covering a heist transpiring somewhere in Europe.

The Ocean’s Eleven franchise technically stemmed from the generally maligned 1960 film of the same name starring Frank Sinatra and various members of the infamous “Rat Pack.” However, the more recognizable history of the film series began with Steven Soderbergh’s reboot in 2001 which boasted an A-list cast including George Clooney and Brad Pitt. This was followed by two sequels with the original creative team and then 2018’s female-centric Ocean’s Eight starring Sandra Bullock. Though the potential 1960’s European setting of this new film would provide a distinct difference from any of its predecessors.

Ryan Gosling is currently is set to star alongside Emily Blunt in Universal’s David Leitch-helmed action film The Fall Guy. That film is set to open in theaters in May of 2024. And in terms of upcoming releases, Gosling will portray the role of Ken in 2023’s upcoming Barbie film with Margot Robie in the titular role.

  • BREAKING: ‘Cobra Kai’ Creators Working on ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Spinoff

BREAKING: ‘Cobra Kai’ Creators Working on ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Spinoff

Now that’s a headline you don’t expect to see, but it seems that legacy sequels or even spinoffs remain a big market. It’s just been revealed by Deadline that the creators behind Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, Haden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are actively working on a spinoff based on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Bill Posley is set to write the film and it’ll be titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off. Paul Young is producing the film with Make Good Content, whose executive, Devon Young, is supervising the project.

It’s certainly a surprise to hear that spinoff of this classic is in any form of development. To be fair, one could say the same thing about The Karate Kid legacy sequel Cobra Kai, which became a massive hit after it moved to its new home with Netflix. So, if anyone can make a head-scratching project work again it would be the team behind that series. No story details are revealed but supposedly the story would follow the valet’s name-dropped in the title that joined Matthew Broderick‘s character when he made off with a Ferrari.

The trio is working on the film under their Counterbalance Entertainment banner with Dina Hillier acting as an executive producer on the project. It will be interesting to see how they tackle this storyline and if it’ll stick to the timeline of the original, or if this takes place in a different time altogether. Plus, it would be strange not to include the fourth wall breaking that the original was famous for. We’ll have to see how the project comes together in the future.

‘Outlander’ Actor Sam Heughan Eyeing ‘Days Gone’ Adaptation

Outlander leading man Sam Heughan looks to have lined up his next feature film. Deadline reports the actor is currently in talks to star in a feature film adaptation of the video game, Days Gone. Sony PlayStation Productions is developing the project and has brought Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air) on board to pen the script.

Days Gone was created by Bend Studios and has sold 9 million copies since it was released in 2019. The game is set in the Pacific Northwest after a devastating global pandemic and follows a former motorcycle club member, Deacon St. John, as he fights to survive against mutated predatory humans while on a quest to find his lost love who is presumed to be dead.

Heughan is best known for his role as Jamie Fraser on the Starz series, Outlander, in which he has starred in 75 episodes. • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Re-Release Includes 11 Minutes of New Footage

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Re-Release Includes 11 Minutes of New Footage

It’s been a while since we first heard that the upcoming re-release of Spider-Man: No Way Home would include brand new footage. There was some controversy on this move, as many expected it as part of the Blu-ray release that was marketed quite heavily given the film’s box office success. Now, Fandango’s Erik Davis has revealed that the upcoming re-release will include 11 minutes of new footage. Tickets are expected to go on sale this Tuesday.

The film still stands at an amazing $1.8B and with this re-release, it may be Sony’s chance to get closer to that $2B. Domestically, it also pulled in $804M with only Top Gun: Maverick being the only release that can rival it in any way currently. We’ll see if this new footage is just the thing to pull in an audience besides just hardcore fans but with pre-release tickets on the horizon, we may even get a number hinting at where the film will stand.

No Way Home is definitely the film that found the perfect balance between nostalgia and strong storytelling. The return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire was handled in a way that not many projects can, which also added a lot to the project’s emotional core. Tom Holland gave his best performance in his MCU career and it’ll be exciting what else he might do in the future.

  • ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ Overtaking ‘Beast’ at Box Office

‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ Overtaking ‘Beast’ at Box Office

Beast looks to be no match for Dragon Ball Super. The Crunchyroll sequel, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, managed to pull in $4 million from Thursday night previews. That is well ahead of Universal’s Beast starring Idris Elba. That film took in $925K from 2,900 theaters.

While it remains to be seen how both films perform over the weekend, Super Hero looks like it’ll take the lead with a projected $15 million start. The film has a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 90% and should easily overpower most of its competition this weekend. As for Beast, one of the few new releases this weekend, the film is looking at a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. More importantly, though, it is expected to open in the single-digit range despite a wide opening of at least 3,700 theaters. Working in Super Hero‘s favor is that it is currently playing in Imax, 4DX, Dolby and D-box. The film also has a limited 90-day theatrical window.

Super Hero‘s preview numbers are all the more impressive when compared to Crunchyroll’s Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which saw $2.88 million from Thursday previews before opening with $14.8 million. It is also above Demon Slayer‘s preview earnings – $3.8 million. That title would go on to open to $21.2 million.

The only real competition Super Hero could face would be Bullet Train and Top Gun: Maverick, with the latter continuing to stay within the top five two months after release.

  • Idris Elba Teases Mystery Project With Marvel

Idris Elba Teases Mystery Project With Marvel

Idris Elba might still have a future with Marvel. The actor, who has played Asgardian warrior Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011’s Thor, was thought to have exited the franchise when his character died valiantly in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. However, a surprise post-credits cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder revealed Heimdall still exists in the halls of Valhalla and has renewed interest from fans in seeing Elba take on the role again.

Speaking with SyFy in support of his new movie Beast, the multifaceted performer was asked about the potential of a return to Marvel after Phase 4. While Elba has leaned more towards the DC side of the aisle in recent years, he wasn’t quick to deny a future with Heimdall. Instead, the actor hinted that there may be a new project in the works that would see him wear the golden helmet once more:

Heimdall is a beloved character, I love playing him. There may be something cooking.

    Idris Elba

When asked to elaborate on what he meant, Elba shied away. However, he still left a lot of room for interpretation with his response:

I don’t know, I would tell you if I did. Well, probably not…

    Idris Elba

The last time audiences saw Heimdall, he was welcoming Jane Foster to the afterlife. There is a recent comic book run by writer Jason Aaron that features those two characters adventuring from beyond the grave, so perhaps Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel Studios will find space in their busy schedule to make an adaptation happen.

    Beast is now in theaters.

  • ‘Grease’ Returning to Theaters to Benefit Charity

‘Grease’ Returning to Theaters to Benefit Charity

Following the unfortunate passing of Olivia Newton-John, AMC Theaters is bringing Grease back to the big screen for a limited time. The classic 1978 musical is returning to 175 theaters stateside as of tomorrow with tickets set to cost fans $5. A dollar from each ticket sold will be AMC’s charitable fund AMC Cares, with the proceeds going to breast cancer research.

“To honor the late Olivia Newton-John: many of our U.S. theatres this weekend will show her classic 1978 hit movie Grease, again on the big screen,” AMC CEO Adam Aron said. “An inexpensive $5 admission price, and through our charity AMC Cares we will donate $1 per sold ticket to breast cancer research.”

Grease, which was to get a spinoff at HBO Max titled Rise of the Pink Ladies, is one of the most iconic musicals to date. Newton-John starred as Sandy, a high school student who falls for John Travolta‘s Danny Zuko over the summer, only to find he’s not the guy she thought him to be. The film was originally released in 1978 and proved to be an instant box office success after opening to $8.9 million and finishing its run with $132.4 million. It went on to become the highest-grossing movie of the year and spawned countless hits off of its soundtrack, including “You’re the One That I Want” and “Summer Nights,” as well as “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” which was nominated for an Oscar.

Newton-John passed away on Aug. 8th at the age of 73. While her cause of death has not yet been revealed, the actress has publicly battled breast cancer since 1992. After going into remission twice, the cancer, unfortunately, returned for a third time in 2017.

  • Alison Brie Wants to Play a Marvel Villain

Alison Brie Wants to Play a Marvel Villain

Actress Alison Brie has made a name for herself among fans through her charismatic and varied roles in projects like Community, GLOW, and Mad Men. Her popularity naturally leads to many wondering if or when the actress might make a jump into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the lead-up to Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Brie has opened up about her desire to join the MCU.

Years ago, early She-Hulk news reported that the series sought an “Alison Brie-type” as the titular character. Obviously, the role ended up going to Tatiana Maslany, but the idea of Brie in the MCU did not die with that casting. The actress has collaborated with Marvel as a filmmaker for Marvel’s 616 and will be voicing a role in the animated Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. But when asked by Comicbook.com if Brie had her eye on any live-action character, the actress mentioned that her fantasy is playing a villain:

Nothing specifically that I have set my sights on, no, and I think that would be a mistake, because clearly you can’t really dictate. Marvel’s going to do their thing, as they should. I think there’s a fantasy deep in my mind that one day I would get to play a great Marvel villain, but I don’t know which one that would be. People, fans, send me some ideas so I can start the campaign.

    Alison Brie

While the actress made it clear that there are no characters or projects she is setting her sights on—or at least none that she is willing to share—it seems likely that Marvel Studios would be interested in having Brie join the MCU in some capacity. Whether the studio would want her for a superhero, like She-Hulk, or a supervillain as the actress hopes for is unclear. With the entireties of Phases 5 and 6 to play out, including several unannounced projects, fans may find out where Brie does or does not fit within the MCU in the relatively near future.

  • ‘One Piece Film: RED’ Becomes Franchise’s Highest-Grossing Film in Just 10 Days

‘One Piece Film: RED’ Becomes Franchise’s Highest-Grossing Film in Just 10 Days

Now that’s quite the record. It seems that One Piece Film: RED has already become the highest-grossing film in its cinematic counterpart within just 10 days. Eiichiro Oda‘s iconic manga is no stranger to releasing films and it seems that the return of Shanks has led to the latest entry overtaking One Piece Film Z‘s position in a record time.

The film’s official Twitter has shared that it already passed 5 million tickets sold and earned around 7 billion yen, which is equivalent to $52.9M. to put that in perspective, Z managed to pull in 6.87M during its run back in 2012. There is speculation that the film’s use of music and topping worldwide charts helped boost the film’s popularity. It’s also not available in all international markets, which will also add to its growth and we’ll see just how big the franchise with a live-action adaptation on the way from Netflix and Tomorrow Studios.

Of course, there’s also the fact that this sees the return of fan-favorite Shanks in a much bigger role than he’s probably had throughout the entire series’ 25-year run. The announcement of One Piece entering its final saga definitely also shook some fans to their core given just how long it has been going. Perhaps the timing was perfect. As of now, the film is likely going to make around 15 billion yen, which would be ahead of Jujutsu Kaisen 0‘s run but it does seem unlikely it’ll pass Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.

  • ‘She-Hulk’: Mark Ruffalo Teases Tatiana Maslany’s Return in Next ‘Avengers’ Film

‘She-Hulk’: Mark Ruffalo Teases Tatiana Maslany’s Return in Next ‘Avengers’ Film

We’re only a few days away from Tatiana Maslany premiering as She-Hulk on her new Disney+ series. She’ll be joined by Mark Ruffalo‘s return as Hulk, who has been a fixture throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s runtime. It seemed like a no-brainer that he’d continue to keep the role alive and maybe even appear in a future Avengers film, but he has now accidentally also confirmed that Tatiana Maslany is definitely going to appear in the one of the two upcoming Avenger movies.

He doesn’t really give away which one it’ll be, but he goes on to highlight that “there’s not going to be another Avengers without her,” which would hint at a potential return to the role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty that will release in 2025. There’s also the already confirmed sequel of Secret Wars which is set to follow just a few months later; though things can always change until then.

It’s fun how Mark Ruffalo continues to stay true to his leaking ways. Almost a shame Tom Holland wasn’t around to help him and add a few more casting confirmations. Still, it does make sense that they’d set her up to return in an upcoming project like Avengers. We might even see her in other shows, as introducing a heroic lawyer does open up many ways of bringing her into the fold. Whatever the case might be, the MCU is continuing to open up in interesting ways.
