  • Development Has Been Halted on ‘Static Shock’ and ‘Supergirl’

Development Has Been Halted on ‘Static Shock’ and ‘Supergirl’

Warner Bros. Discovery might be moving full-steam ahead with The Flash, however, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests plenty of other DC projects have been shelved – at least temporarily.

In a new piece breaking down the status of projects in varying stages of development at Warner Bros. Discovery and DC, THR has suggested a slew of projects haven’t necessarily been canceled, but development has slowed. Per the outlet, Supergirl, Green Lantern Corps, Static Shock and a Superman film from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates have all seen their development come to a halt with no directors attached to any of the projects.

Reports that Supergirl hit a speed bump first surfaced last week, with Rolling Stone stating the Flash spinoff was no longer moving forward. This report from THR suggests the project isn’t necessarily canceled, but rather, not a priority at the moment. That could potentially change depending on how The Flash is received upon release next year. As for Static Shock and Coates’ Superman, this marks the first news regarding the projects since they were initially announced, so it’s not entirely surprising that development has stalled on both.

A Static Shock movie was first teased in August 2020 as part of DC’s FanDome event, with news coming a few months later that Michael B. Jordan would produce the project for Warner Bros. along with Reginald Hudlin on the film. The project looked to be gaining steam after hiring Randy McKinnon in March 2021 to pen the script. Unfortunately, that was the last bit of movement on the project since its initial announcement – the same goes for Coates’ Superman film with producer J.J. Abrams.

With Warner Bros. Discovery viewing Superman as a viable franchise for its DC brand, it remains to be seen whether or not the studio opts to bring back Henry Cavill or opt to introduce a brand-new Man of Steel. Either way, it seems likely Superman will fly again, it just remains to be seen which Superman it’ll be.

  • REPORT: ‘Black Panther’s Costume Designer Joins Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’

REPORT: ‘Black Panther’s Costume Designer Joins Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’

We’ve long been waiting for any real update on the upcoming adaptation of Blade, as Marvel Studios attempts to give the iconic franchise its own MCU spin. Mahershala Ali is set to take on the titular role. Bassam Tariq is set to direct an adaptation from writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour but there’s still been no real update on when exactly it may ramp up production.

Luckily, it seems we may have gotten a small update on the project, as according to Sky News’ Will Mavity, the costume designer for Black Panther and Malcolm X, Ruth E. Carter, has joined the production to continue her work. She also recently worked on projects like Dolemite Is My Name and Coming 2 America, and went on to win an Academy Award for her costume work on the first Black Panther film. so, she makes for a great addition to the production team.

Carter makes for a great addition and it’ll be interesting to see what she brings to the table. Blade as a character has been heavily defined by his look introduced in the Wesley Snipes films. So, they may take inspiration from that and add a few unique flourishes to make it stand out from its predecessor. We’ll have to wait and see for now, as we wait for any official update from Marvel.

  • ‘Birds of Prey’ Spinoff Still in Development as Warner Bros. Discovery reshuffles DC Line-Up

‘Birds of Prey’ Spinoff Still in Development as Warner Bros. Discovery reshuffles DC Line-Up

The future of Warner Bros. remains in shambles, as many have no idea what future DC projects are in some form of development or another. The random cancelation of Batgirl has left many scratching their heads about what exactly it means for many of the projects currently in some form of development or another. Among them was the Birds of Prey spinoff that would focus on Jurnee Smollett‘s Black Canary.

The project is going to be written by Mischa Green, who has worked with Smollett on other projects in the past. As many DC projects are getting taken down or at least their future in question, there are a lot of questions about how they’ll handle their projects. They are seemingly moving away from HBO Max movie releases, which might mean Black Canary might be a theatrical release.

Of course, they may turn it into a TV series and find a new home over at HBO. Yet, it’s difficult to say with just how they are going to approach these projects moving forward. There’s also the question if it not having started thee project could give them the pivot to find the fitting home for it moving forward. Here’s hoping the wait isn’t too long for an official update on the project.

  • ‘Black Panther 2’ Still Undergoing Reshoots Even After San Diego Comic-Con

‘Black Panther 2’ Still Undergoing Reshoots Even After San Diego Comic-Con

We’ve known some time ago that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever went through quite a few reshoots earlier this year. Even during principal photography, they have faced some hardship due to continued delays even throughout the reshoot process. As of now, it seems that they are still working on adding some minor tweaks to add the final touches to the project.

Namor actor Tenoch Huerta has revealed that they are even adding minor sequences right now, as they were busy with reshoots even after attending San Diego Comic-Con to show off the first trailer. He revealed it during an interview with W Radio, as translated by Twitter user @chavernand.

To be honest, my life hasn’t changed that much. I’m doing reshoots that are like little missing pieces, like the take of a hand, a movement, some new framing. Like little things to do at the end of every movie, and that sometimes you need to do them again. As a matter of fact, that same day at the end of our presentation at Comic-Con, we went back to the studios, to keep working, so I haven’t had that much spare time. I’ve been working all these days, I think this is my first day off… kind of.

    Tenoch Huerta

There’s no word if they are still actively working on the film, especially as the type of reshoots isn’t specified at the moment. He does seem to be hinting that they are only adapting “little missing pieces” which means that these might not be massive adaptations. Still, the first trailer made quite the statement, and here’s hoping that further teases continue building up towards the official release in November.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Extended Cut Ticket Sales Delayed

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Extended Cut Ticket Sales Delayed

After the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony decided to release an extended cut of the film in theaters nearly nine months after the original film debuted in December of 2021. Spider-Man: No Way Home “The More Fun Stuff Version” is expected to add about 15 minutes of footage to the original 148-minute cut. It is not clear what exactly will be added in the extended cut, but the theatrical release is scheduled to swing into theaters on September 2, 2022.

While it was previously announced that tickets for “The More Fun Stuff Version” would go on sale today, August 9, many would-be ticket holders were confused when they were unable to purchase any tickets. Luckily, it does not appear that the release date for the extended cut has moved, but Fandango’s Erik Davis confirmed in a tweet that ticket sales have indeed been delayed. Unfortunately, however, there does not seem to be a known date on which the tickets will actually go on sale:

Considering the release of “The More Fun Stuff Version” is mere weeks away, presumably, ticket sales will be re-announced relatively soon. Given Sony’s recent record with poorly re-releasing its films with Morbius, the success or lack thereof of the release of No Way Home’s extended cut—with the original film already available on digital—will be significant for the studio.

Spider-Man: No Way Home “The More Fun Stuff Version” is set to release in theaters on September 2, 2022.

  • Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Working on Live-Action ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Movie

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Working on Live-Action ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Movie

It looks like the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is finally moving forward, as Blumhouse founder shared a new picture sharing that he’s actively working with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop on an upcoming project. While he doesn’t give away what exactly it is going to be, he does state that their “expertise with animatronics is absolutely killer” and a close look at the desk confirms they are already preparing the animatronics for Five Nights at Freddy’s.

The bowtie technically gives away that it’s Freddy but we don’t know if they might mix things up with some new animatronics. The three toes and green coloring could hint at Happy Frog. There’s no real core story they can directly adapt from the games, but as it seems to be a cleaner design, we might explore the earlier days of the pizza place. Perhaps we see what it was like before the vanishing of children turned it into the horror house that it is known for in the games.

The surprising revelation is that the project is moving forward after all. While Jason Blum teased that movement was happening in the film, it did lose its director. Chris Columbus was originally attached. There were seemingly some complications with the creator Scott Cawthon not signing off on the script, which he was involved with writing, and here’s hoping we might get an announcement soon.

  • Jamie Foxx Reflects On Almost Spoiling ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Jamie Foxx Reflects On Almost Spoiling ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

The release of Spider-Man: No Way Home was shrouded in studio secrecy. Multiple major characters were returning from previous films, including all three live-action Spider-Men, and the information was being kept under heavy wraps. However, despite the studio’s best efforts, rumors about a multiversal team-up taking place in the film were making the rounds almost from day one. This was in huge part because, very early in the production process, Jamie Foxx announced his own return to the franchise as the villain Electro, with an Instagram post that included an image of more than one Spider-Man.

The post was quickly deleted, but the damage was irreparable. Foxx’s social media became ground zero for a storm of theories and Internet whispers that were ultimately mostly correct. Speaking with CinemaBlend about the incident nearly two years later, the actor admits he made a mistake in almost blowing Sony’s cover:

It was crazy. It was like a- it was like a rock concert, when we did that film. And I thought Sony did a fantastic job of mystique. You know what I’m saying? Holding things, keeping things – you know, I kind of almost blew it… But I think they did a great job in doing that, bringing some mystique. And I think that that’s what was needed to get people back in the theater.

    Jamie Foxx

Foxx also commented on what it was like to see Tom HollandAndrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire suited up together for the first time. The excitement of the moment almost made the Django Unchained star “blow it” again, until someone else on set put a stop to what could have been the most infamous spoiler in film history:

As soon as I got on the set and there was all three Spider-Mans, I was like this (picks up cell phone). ’Oh, we up in here, baby, ‘bout to go live…’ And somebody just dove on me like I was a fire. I was like, ‘What the hell?’ ‘Shh! No one’s supposed to know.’ ‘Okay, my bad. Okay, we ain’t supposed to know that all three of them are here!’

    Jamie Foxx

Holland is well-known for his history of spoiling, but it looks like he wasn’t the one Sony should have been worried about. Now that the secret is out, however, fans can experience all the thrilling action again in Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version, an extended cut of the film that hits theaters on September 1st.

  • Paramount Sets Release Dates for ‘Sonic 3,’ ‘Smurfs’ Musical

Paramount Sets Release Dates for ‘Sonic 3,’ ‘Smurfs’ Musical

There’s a third Sonic the Hedgehog film on the way.

Paramount announced a release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 late on Monday. The threequel will hit theaters on Dec. 20th, 2024. The studio also set a new release date for its newest Smurfs film, an animated musical, with the project slated to hit theaters on Feb. 14th, 2025.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was officially announced as being in development back in February, before the second film even hit theaters. The movie is based on the classic Sega video game franchise of the same name. Despite controversy surrounding the first film, which led to the redesign of Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog managed to go on to earn $319.7 million worldwide back in 2020. Its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, hit theaters this past April and managed to surpass the box office haul of its predecessor with an impressive $401.8 million at the worldwide box office.

As for Smurfs, Sony found some success with 2011’s The Smurfs, its sequel The Smurfs 2 (2013) and Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017. Now, Paramount is hoping to do the same with the launch of an animated Smurfs musical in 2025. Like with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Smurfs film was first announced in February of this year. The project is part of a new deal between Paramount and Nickelodeon. The new deal includes multiple animated films to be released through Paramount, as well as a second season of the animated series The Smurfs on Nickelodeon.

  • Zazie Beetz to Return in ‘Joker’ Sequel

Zazie Beetz to Return in ‘Joker’ Sequel

When the Joker sequel was announced, all eyes were on the fact that not only was it going to be a musical but also Lady Gaga is very likely taking on the role of Harley Quinn. We still don#t know any details about the project, but we did get a confirmation that she is definitely joining the project in an unknown role. In a surprising twist, it seems that a familiar face is going to return to the project from the first entry, as Zazie Beetz will take on the role of Sophie Dumond once again.

While there have been hints that Joker: Folie à Deux will mostly take place in Arkham Asylum, the ending did keep a lot of questions open on how much of the story was actually Arthur Fleck’s experience or in the character’s mind. Carried mostly by Joaquin Phoenix‘s performance, the project played with the viewer’s perception of what is and isn’t real. As such was the story arc of Beetz‘ Dumond. While it seemed that she was slowly falling in love with Fleck, it turns out it was all in his mind.

There’s no word on how her character might tie into the story, perhaps they’ll play around with the idea that she’s an inmate or someone that is still haunting Fleck’s subconscious. It would be strange if she returns for a brief appearance or generally if they want to further explore his actions as he fully became the Joker. Perhaps we get to see Gotham from her perspective as everything has gone insane after Fleck accidentally led a faction into trying to overtake the city. Whatever may be, we’ll have to wait and see.

  • ‘One Piece Film RED’ Nabs the Second-Biggest Box Office Opening in Japan

‘One Piece Film RED’ Nabs the Second-Biggest Box Office Opening in Japan

One Piece has been slowly growing its international presence ahead of the live-action series hitting Netflix at some point in the future. While production has been busy, it’s not the only major project finding development. The original manga by Eiichiro Oda is about to enter its final saga and kicked it off with quite the bang. Not only is One Piece Odyssey on the horizon to release later this year, but we also had the world premiere of the fifteenth film entry simply titled RED.

The story focuses on the Strawhat pirate’s arrival at a concert by the superstar Uta. As it turns out, she’s not only a childhood friend of Luffy but also the daughter of Shanks; probably one of the biggest revelations to catch people off-guard when the first trailer dropped. The film has now opened in Japan across 495 screens on August 6th and has already made quite the splash.

According to Crunchyroll, One Piece Film RED has made 2.25 billion yen, which equates to $16.63M. What makes this stand out is that it’s now the biggest opening for a One Piece film yet and even the second-biggest two-day opening weekend in Japanese history. The only one still standing at the top was Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train which pulled in 3.3 billion yen. It did take the top spot from Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which stood at 1.6 billion yen.

It’s also now the third film to make one billion yen on opening day and only the second to make another billion on its second day. So, it’s safe to say that the project has definitely had quite a bit of hype behind it and with the current events in the manga unfolding, there’s a likelihood it could also perform quite well internationally. Mugen Train was a big international success during the pandemic, and it’ll be interesting to see
