    Disney+ Renews ‘Percy Jackson’ for Season 2

    On Wednesday, Disney’s Bob Iger confirmed that Percy Jackson will return for a second season on Disney+. The news came during Disney’s Q1 2024 earnings call. The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will follow the plot of the second book, The Sea of Monsters, and will see the series’ leading trio – Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) – embark on a brand new adventure.

    Celebrating the news, Rick Riordan, the author behind the bestselling series of books, expressed his excitement over returning for another adventure. “I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+! Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”

    News of the show’s renewal comes a week after the first season’s finale dropped on the streaming service. Per Disney, Percy Jackson‘s first season reportedly generated more than 110 million hours streamed to date, with Deadline previously noting the first episode brought in 26.2 million views alone within its first three weeks. The adaptation was created by Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, who also serve as executive producers on the series.

    Disney Sets Release Date for ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Streaming Series

    After stalling out as a theatrical franchise following a pair of less-than-well-received films, Rick Rirodan’s YA novel series, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, is being resurrected as a streaming series on Disney Plus and now fans can mark their calenders for the new show’s debut.

    According to EW, the James Bobin-helmed series, which was originally expected to hit Disney Plus in 2024, will roll out a two-episode debut on December 20th. That date was previously set to be the release date of Lucasfilm’s Skeleton Crew and while there’s been no announcement, it seems unlikely that Disney would push both series out on the same date.

    Percy Jackson & The Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.

    Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadr headline the new series which is expected to return for a second season with Jonathan E. Steinberg, who co-ran Season 1 with Dan Shotz, on board as showrunner.

    It looks like Percy Jackson and the Olympians is already working on the next season even before its initial one premiered on Disney+. While it is still slated for a 2024 release, it seems like they are getting ready just in case a season two renewal is around the corner as revealed by Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan in his personal blog.

    He does highlight that nothing has been green-lit but they have been approved to start work on scripts, which helps production jump straight into the next season once they get the renewal rather than going through the writing process and delaying the next season’s release even more.

    W]e have started work on the writers’ room for season two. This does NOT mean the second season has been green-lit yet. It’s too early for that. But we have been approved to start developing scripts, and I think everyone’s expectation is that a second season will happen if all goes as planned. It sure is exciting to be part of the room, though. We’ve broken down the action of the second ‘Percy Jackson’ book, ‘The Sea of Monsters,’ into a series of episodes, and have begun outlining what the first episodes would look like.

    It’s something that a WGA entry recently hinted at for Netflix’s One Piece, as it might also already working on the scripts for its second season as well. The practice is common as it gives them shorter waiting periods between entries and it mostly means they are working on the basic season outline before finalizing any scripts once there’s a confirmation for the second season.

    Production on the first season of Percy Jackson and The Olympians has officially wrapped. The announcement was made via a Twitter video featuring actor Walker Scobell, who plays the titular character in the new series. Percy Jackson and The Olympians will also star Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri as Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood respectively. The series was created for television by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz and is based on the young-adult novel series authored by Rick Riordan.

    The show’s first season will be based on the first novel of the series, The Lightning Thief. The novel previously was adapted as a 2010 film for 20th Century Fox. The Percy Jackson and The Olympians series aims to be a more faithful adaptation of the novel, and will hopefully be a more successful venture than the mixed bag of a film franchise. If successful, Percy Jackson and The Olympians could likely have the cultural staying power in the young-adult genre that the Harry Potter films held in the first decade of the 2000s.

    With production having just now wrapped for the first season, it would be logical to predict that the series will air at the start of 2024. However, there’s no official word on a release window.

    Percy Jackson and The Olympians will release exclusively on Disney+. The first will be comprised of eight episodes.

    Disney+’s ‘Percy Jackson’ Finds its Zeus and Poseidon

    With production currently underway in Vancouver, Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on the novels by Rick Riordan, already has quite the cast with Walker Scobell as Percy, joined by Aryan Simhadri‘s Grover and Leah Sava Jeffries‘ Annabeth. Some other impressive actors set to appear in the project are Jessica Parker Kennedy, Olivea Morton, Jason Mantzoukas, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jay Duplass, and Timothy Omundson. And now, it seems the series has found two more major additions that will surely have fans of the books excited.

    Variety has revealed that the series has cast The Wire and John Wick actor Lance Reddick as the Disney+ shows’ version of Zeus. Per the official character description, “The all-powerful god of the sky and leader of Mount Olympus, Zeus is tempestuous and mistrustful. He’s promised to wage a war if his stolen thunderbolt is not returned.” Lost in Space and Black Sails‘ Toby Stephens will take on the role of Poseidon, god of the sea and Percy’s absent father, with whom Percy shares many qualities. Per the official character description, “Though he has stayed away throughout Percy’s life, his deep feelings for his son (and Percy’s mother, Sally) are evident.”

    The casting is definitely exciting and it does seem like Disney is all-in with the project. It has yet to be seen if Disney will start working on a second season or wait it out until viewership numbers are in, but the cast is already quite promising and will ensure that the adaptation stands out from the original films.

    Logan Lerman Discusses Upcoming ‘Percy Jackson’ Disney+ Reboot

    While much discourse around Disney+ content has been built around marquee franchises from Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, one upcoming series has the potential to become a sleeper hit for the streamer. Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on the novels by Rick Riordan, is currently in production in Vancouver and is set to wrap later this month.

    This will be a reboot of the 20th Century Fox two-film series from earlier in the 21st century that sticks closer to the original novels. This series was a launching pad for the career of Logan Lerman as the titular character and he has some words about the upcoming relaunch. While promoting season two of Hunters on Amazon Prime, the actor spoke highly about the new series and specifically Walker Scobell, the actor taking his place as Percy Jackson.

    I don’t think he needs any advice. The kid’s really talented. The only advice I can give him is just to enjoy it while you’re doing it. I think when you’re young, at least when I was younger [playing Percy Jackson], you almost forget to enjoy it as you’re a part of it. I really enjoyed it while I was doing it. Just take each second in and enjoy the newness of what you’re doing and being a part of something like that. That would be the only thing I would tell him. I’d feel like a bit of a schmuck, giving him advice. You’re great. You’re there for a reason. Just do your job.

    It’s certainly great to see Lerman maintain a positive relationship with the role and franchise that played a significant part in his development as an actor. This is despite the two films being a mixed bag both critically and commercially. Logan Lerman also specifically spoke about his confidence in the new series being more of a success across the board.

    I just think this adaptation is going to be great. I think the actors are so good and the creative team is great. Obviously, it’s Rick Riordan. It’s going to be exactly what it should be and I hope the fans like it. I’ll definitely watch it. I’m curious to see what they do with it. I have no doubt that it’s going to be great.

    The notion of Rick Riordan being more involved with the series’ creative process is certainly a promising sign. It was an issue that held back the film adaptations, but the show is looking to avoid these pitfalls and fully adapt the rich tapestry of Riordan’s young adult novels. If the quality of the books can be met, Disney+ can potentially have its version of the Harry Potter franchise in the near future.

    Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently aiming to release its first season in early 2024.

    Many were excited when the announcement dropped that Percy Jackson and the Olympians were in development as a series. While many have a soft spot for the two films exploring the iconic books series by Rick Riordan, there still was some hope to finally see the entire series realized. Luckily, Disney+ has taken on the task of bringing the story of young Percy Jackson to life, as he uncovers his true heritage and enters a Greek mythology-filled world that he never knew existed.

    The production has been going on for quite some time and the only castings many have been wondering about who might take on the role of the iconic Gods of the Greek pantheon. After a long wait, it seems we finally have our first casting in that regard, as Lin Manuel Miranda has been announced to be taking on the role of Hermes in the Disney+ series.

    The main trio will consist of Walker Scobell as our titular hero, Leah Sava Jeffries in the role of Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood rounding out the cast played by Aryan Simhadri. The series has been quite impressive, especially when D23 gave us a first look at the series offering a very book-accurate depiction of Camp Half-Blood.

    The role was originally played by Logan Lerman, who famously took on the role in the two live-action films that were released in 2010 and 2013, which adapted The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters. As the second film underperformed at the box office, it wasn’t able to move onward as there were plans to adapt The Titan’s Curse that never came together. Now that 20th Century Fox was purchased by Disney, it gave them the opportunity to bring us this new Disney+ series with a whole new cast.

    The cast of the live-action Disney Plus adaptation of the Percy Jackson novels has grown once again. Adam Copeland, Suzanne Cryer, and Jessica Parker Kennedy have all been announced as guest stars to the already impressive cast. They join Walker Scobell, in the titular role, alongside Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries as Grover and Annabeth, respectively.

    Copeland, best known for his work as Edge in the WWE, will be playing Ares, the Greek god of war. He is described as being a handsomely arrogant god that loves to be an agent of chaos. Suzanne Cryer, likely best known for her leading role in Silicon Valley, will guest star as Echidna, the Mother of Monsters. She is described as a maternal, yet dangerous figure that will serve as a major challenge to the protagonists, both physically and spiritually. Jessica Parker Kennedy, likely best known for her supporting role on CW’s The Flash, will be portraying the infamous Medusa. She is described as an embittered wild card that the core characters are unsure if they can trust.

    Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the story of a 12-year-old with ADHD and dyslexia who must come to terms with being the son of Poseidon and adapting to his new home at Camp Half-Blood. The first season will adapt the first novel of the Rick Riordan series,The Lightning Thief, in which Percy must clear his name and solve the mystery of who stole Zeus’ master lightning bolt.

    ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Series to Use StageCraft Technology

    Percy Jackson and the Olympians is set to continue the trend of Disney affiliated productions to utilize Industrial Light & Magic’s (ILM) StageCraft LED systems. The upcoming Disney+ series will specifically be the first project to be produced on their newly built Vancouver stage. 

    This type of technology came into prominence with The Mandalorian and has risen in notoriety thanks to the ability to digitally create settings that look realistic for both the performers working on them and the fans watching the series. Since then, the StageCraft technology has been used for the productions of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The Vancouver stage is the fifth permanent StageCraft volume created by the division of Lucasfilm, with two others in Manhattan Beach, one at Burbank’s Walt Disney Studios, and the other at Pinewood Studios in London.

    Upon the announcement of this technology being used for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, novel author Rick Riordan spoke about his excitement for how it will positively impact the show.

    The story of Percy Jackson has such an epic scope. I am over the moon that we have forged such a great relationship [with ILM] to give this show such a cutting-edge look and feel.

    The series is set to star Walker Scobell in the titular role of Percy Jackson. As well, Leah Sava Jeffires and Aryan Simhadri will be in co-leading roles as Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, respectively. Production for the series began in early June with director James Bobin helming the pilot episode. It certainly will be interesting to follow how this series progresses with this advanced technology enhancing its visual experience.

    Disney+’s ‘Percy Jackson’ Series Expands Cast by 3

    According to Deadline, Dior Goodjohn and Charlie Bushnell have joined the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians in recurring roles, while Olivea Morton is set to guest star. They join series lead Walker Scobell in the small screen adaptation of the beloved book series. Also starring alongside Scobell in the series are Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries, as well as recently announced cast members Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, and Timm Sharp.

    Goodjohn, best known for her role as Robyn Rook in the Head of the Class reboot on HBO Max, will be portraying Clarisse La Rue, the child Ares. She is a determined and aggressive fighter and is feared as a bully at Camp Half-Blood. Bushnell, who appeared as Bobby Cañero-Reed in Diary of a Future President on Disney+, will play Luke Castellan. The character is the son of Hermes and a head counselor at Camp Half-Blood, as well as an expert swordsman and all-around cool guy.

    Morton, who has appeared in the short film And Yet They Speak, will play Nancy Bobofit, a sixth-grade classmate of Percy Jackson. Portrayed as a bit of a kleptomaniac in the first book of the Percy Jackson series, Nancy enjoys picking on Percy, but ends up the first victim of Percy’s demigod powers.

    Production on the live-action series is underway with the author of the original Percy Jackon book series Rick Riordan serving as the writer of the pilot, alongside Jon Steinberg. James Bobin of The Muppets and Dora and the Lost City of Gold fame is directing the series for Disney+, which currently is without a release date.
