RUMOR: ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel Eyeing Early 2025 Release

There’s been a lot of rumors making the rounds before San Diego Comic-Con and D23 gave us a tease of what’s to come. Among them was the hint that we’d get the announcement for a Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sequel that was surprisingly never revealed. We did find out its direct Daniel Destin Cretton will be tackling the next Avengers movie titled The Kang Dynasty, but it seems he may be getting busier than expected.

According to a new Reddit rumor as shared by The Direct, it seems that Shang-Chi is getting a sequel and is likely eyeing a 2025 release window. It is even surprisingly more exact with February 15th as the potential release window. Of course, we still have to take this with a grain of salt but given the first film’s success, a sequel seems like a no-brainer, especially if Cretton proved himself enough to take on an Avengers movie.

It looks like he’ll be quite a bit busier in the near future, especially with him also producing an adaptation of Wonder Man for Disney+. Of course, there’s no clear news if that series is also set to release ahead of the new Avengers films, or perhaps it might be something that takes place afterward.

There are a lot of possibilities and there’s a question about how the director might tackle the production; there’s a chance they might be currently mapping out the next few years for the director and it’ll be interesting to see if Kang might even have a role in the Shang-Chi sequel potentially.

  • Simu Liu Teases His Marvel Future: “I’m Going to Be Busy the Next Few Years”

Simu Liu Teases His Marvel Future: “I’m Going to Be Busy the Next Few Years”

Marvel Studios Hall H presentation at SDCC ’22 gave fans a peek at the plans for the next three years of the MCU, including dates for the next two Avengers films, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Shortly after, a trade report revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed 2021’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, had signed on to helm The Kang Dynasty. That report, coupled with a lack of news about a Shang-Chi sequel at SDCC, led to some social media speculation that Cretton would be too busy to get around to a second Shang-Chi film until AFTER the Multiverse Saga came to a close.

A Shang-Chi sequel may not, however, be as far away as some believe it to be. Cretton officially boarded the Shang-Chi sequel as writer and director in December of 2021 and while he admitted at the time that he had not begun work on a script, it’s likely the one has started to coalesce around some ideas that he brainstormed for the film while in production on Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Cretton is also serving as an executive producer on Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man streaming series, meaning with The Kang Dynasty, a project which he’s only directing and NOT writing, he’s juggling three projects at the same time.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Shang-Chi 2 has taken a back seat. In fact, it turns out it might well be a top priority for Cretton and Marvel Studios and could very well hit theaters before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. In an interview at SDCC, Shang-Chi star Simu Liu may have hinted at just such a scenario when he teased his potential involvement in “a couple” of the projects announced by Marvel Studios at their Hall H presentation and indicating that he was “going to be busy the next few years.”

While this is certainly no guarantee that Shang-Chi 2 will be in theaters ahead of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, it does leave the door open for that to happen. It is very likely that the two films might share some connective tissue, with Cretton working on them both, and while time might seem short, both projects could be completed in plenty of time for 2025 release dates. However, until Marvel Studios dates the sequel to Shang-Chi, speculation will continue. Perhaps they’ll do just that at their upcoming D23 presentation in Anaheim in September.

  • Connecting Imaginary Dots: Marvel Studios is Making a ‘Ten Rings’ Animated Prequel

Connecting Imaginary Dots: Marvel Studios is Making a ‘Ten Rings’ Animated Prequel

In early July, Marvel Studios put out a casting call for a Mandarin-speaking actress to portray a character codenamed “Jin” for an untitled animated project. The synopsis for the project sets up the project as one in which “a secret society of humanoid aliens living on earth dispatches a team of spies across the world to collect a series of missing artifacts that threaten to influence mankind…” Marvel Studios has several animated projects in development such as X-Men ’97, Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshmen Year, but this synopsis does not seem to overlap with anything already known about those series. If that is the case, this casting call is the first indication that the studio has yet another production in the works and one that may have already started production. Taking a little closer look at the information that’s been made available and following and admittedly single-minded line of thought, it’s possible to connect the dots and wonder if Marvel Studios may just be making an animated Ten Rings prequel series for Disney Plus.

It’s worth noting that the casting call for “Jin” specified that the role was for the third episode in the series that would start in late July or early August, meaning it’s very likely they’ve already begun work on at least the first episode. If that’s the case, it’s totally possible that this series could be among the projects discussed during Marvel Studios’ first ever animation panel at SDCC on Friday, July 21st. So, right or wrong, speculation on the nature of the series could be short-lived.

The origin of the Ten Rings was left intentionally vague during the opening of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. By the end of the film, the audience only really knows that they are really powerful artifacts that are almost certainly alien in nature. Where they came from or how they got to Earth is left entirely unclear. In the comics, however, their origin is very clear and leads to the first clue that this animated series COULD explore how they came to be on Earth in the MCU. The synopsis mentions “a secret society of humanoid aliens living on earth” which ties nicely into the origin of the rings in the comics.

Retconned a few times over the decades, the story of how the ten rings arrived on Earth has always had one constant: a shape-shifting alien race known as the Makulans. Mostly known for being the race of Fin Fang Foom, Makulans are actually humanoid shape-shifters some of whom came to Earth at some point before the 8th century. Using their shape-shifting abilities, they infiltrated Chinese society with hopes over eventually conquering the planet. One of their number, Fin Fang Foom, voluntarily went into stasis, where he stayed for…a really long time. As told in the pages of Tales of Suspense #62, another Makulan, Axonn-Karr, arrived on Earth and, while looking very dragon-y, was attacked and mortally wounded. Karr was later found by The Mandarin, who before he killed him took from him 10 very powerful objects: the ten rings.

The animated series, much like the comics and Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, clearly takes place, at least in part, in China. “Jin” is described as a “Chinese warrior” and “perhaps the best trained martial artist in the world.” Her story begins, it seems, when another character named “Bosco” steals one of the series’ MacGuffin artifacts. With the history of the MCU’s ten rings yet to be revealed, there are plenty of scenarios that could result in the rings being scattered “across the world”, including perhaps different dimensions. For what it’s worth, “Jin” is just as likely to be Wu Ao-Shi, the Immortal Weapon of K’un Lun in the mid-1500s, as anyone else.

It’s possible that this series explores the history of the ten rings a little differently than they have been in the comics. As made clear by the synopsis, these artifacts (if they are the rings) have been scattered across the world. What the series might follow is the series of events that lead to them being collected by Makulans and then hidden away, in a tomb or a cave, BEFORE they are found by Wenwu. Marvel Studios has already shown that a tomb that was marked with the symbol of the Ten Rings organization that held the remains of what appeared to be a dead alien. Who’s to say that’s the only dead alien Wenwu left in the dirt?

Is anything presented above strong enough evidence that this series will tell the story of how the ten rings came to Earth and came to be in Wenwu’s possession? Absolutely not. However, there is one more piece of evidence available that could strengthen the case. The showrunner and executive producer of the series is Marvel Studios’ storyboard artist Todd Harris. Over the past 5 years, Harris has worked on 7 Marvel Studios films including, most recently, Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. It’s possible that during his time on Shang-Chi, Harris worked closely with director Destin Daniel Cretton on developing the backstory for the ten rings and that time spent on the story led to this animated series going into development.

Harris’ involvement doesn’t necessarily make the ten rings a lock to be the “missing artifacts” mentioned in the synopsis. Given the fact that the ten rings are just one of at least two alien artifacts hanging out on Earth (Kamala’s bangle being the other), it’s possible that over the next year or so before this animated series debuts, other alien tech will be uncovered in other projects. Ms. Marvel hinted at at least some level of connectivity to the rings, so maybe, as outlined here, the rings are just one of a group of Phase 4 MacGuffins connected to Variants of Kang. Whatever the case, it won’t be too long before Marvel Studios officially addresses the series and the implications of it.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘Shang-Chi’ May Have Introduced Phase 4’s Infinity Stones

‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘Shang-Chi’ May Have Introduced Phase 4’s Infinity Stones

There have been many comments on a lack of connection between the various projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s elusive Phase 4. While it’s echoing the days of when the MCU was in its infancy, long before anyone made heads or tails about Thanos’ brief grin at the tail end of Avengers, there has been a running theme going throughout the season. Many of the stories explored here are about identity and uncovering what we are capable of. There’s also the mystery set out in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as mysterious tools are appearing with uncertain origins. The same goes for the recent Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, where she uses bangles that are a mystery to even the Clandestine seeking them.

Yet, the latest episode introduced a surprising twist to a familiar aspect of Kamala Kan’s power. In the comics, she doesn’t actually shapeshift but rather borrows mass from herself throughout time. In the series, she actually gains the literal ability to travel through time and ends up during the Partition to help her own family’s history come true. It’s a rather surprising twist that not only gave us time to explore an important part of history but also continue to evolve Kamala’s power set. This does lead to more questions regarding the mysterious origins and how they might tie to the Kree, given it was on a blue arm and the Ten Rings logo.

Once I started thinking about the time travel implications in this series, the more I started to think about the loose connection at play here. We did have an entire scene where no one could connect the origins of the Ten Rings, a weapon that’s been part of MCU’s history long before we even witnessed it ourselves. How would technology that advanced find its way into the hands of Wenwu that not only give him seemingly eternal life but also the power to take down an entire army and how would it connect to the mysterious bangles passed down in the Khan family? The Disney+ series producers did hint that they adapted them for a bigger story, and perhaps they weren’t hinting at just The Marvels but even beyond that.

Well, there is actually one connective tissue that would tie it together. It’s not stated outright but I believe these two mysterious items are linked. In a way, they likely have a similar origin and that is one that doesn’t lie in the past. In Loki, we’ve met a Variant of the man that would be known as Kang the Conqueror to many. Time travel and dimensional travel have been at the forefront for most of the season, as the MCU cleverly tied these elements together to avoid having to explain two distinct sci-fi concepts.

Fittingly, both elements come together in this season of Ms. Marvel. Similar to the dimension introduced in Shang-Chi, the Clandestine are actually from another dimension they refer to as Noor and have been on Earth for a long time. Both projects feature a mysterious object that gives its wielder mysterious powers of an unknown origin that could potentially open up the MCU’s mythos in new ways. Perhaps these objects have these powers because they aren’t from any past civilization but rather originate from the future.

Kang the Conqueror has that name for a reason. With an arsenal unlike any other at his hand, it wouldn’t be too surprising that he’d also find a way to echo the words of Thor’s explanation of how Asgardians combine magic and technology. He’s found a way to harness exactly that to create an arsenal of weapons he used for his own conquering throughout history only to leave them behind when he made his jump. Moon Knight almost featured the man that was a pharao in another timeline, which further pushes a connection.

Perhaps Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced the only weapon that would be able to take him down, someone who can literally bend reality to her knees. Wanda may be the piece of the puzzle that won’t become apparent until much later. In a way, the unnamed bangles and Shang-Chi‘s Ten Rings are actually Phase 4’s new Infinity Stones. Instead of literal embodiments of powers, they are objects all hinting at one major threat and the power he truly holds. Kang the Conqueror doesn’t need to collect any stones to accomplish his goals, he already has done so in another time. Yet, his arrogance of leaving these objects in the past may also become his undoing.

  • New ‘Shang-Chi’ Concept Art Includes Deadpool Fighting Proxima Night

New ‘Shang-Chi’ Concept Art Includes Deadpool Fighting Proxima Night

We know that Marvel Studios invests a lot of time in creating concept art for various versions of the scripts to help its writers get a feeling for how these projects come together. Sometimes it offers a look behind-the-scenes on what ideas were pitched throughout the development, and it seems that a new piece of concept art from Andrew Kim reveals a different battle in the fighting cage sequence of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. While we got Wong fighting Abomination in the film, it seems that at one point it included a battle between Avengers: Infinity War‘s Proxima Midnight and Deadpool.

    Env_SiFanNightClub_v007_WIP_NewFightArenaPOV_190904_AK.jpg

It’s unclear if this was just drawn for fun, as Proxima Midnight not only died in Infinity War but even got snapped again in Avengers: Endgame. So, her inclusion in Golden Daggers Club makes less sense than the fourth-wall-breaking merch with a mouth. While it may have been jarring to see him included, especially with the character’s connection to the Fox universe. So, even if this isn’t just a joke by the artist, it may have been a bit jarring to suddenly see him show up out of nowhere for some fans.

Sadly, it seems very unlikely that this was ever planned, and the inclusion of Abomination was a great move, especially with his confirmed appearance in She-Hulk. Plus, we got some fun with Wong that opened up a lot of questions about what the future has in store for these characters. A sudden return of Proxima Midnight might have many scratching their head, though Deadpool could’ve dragged her from the multiverse for fun. It might’ve been too distracting in the middle of a new solo film that would have distracted viewers. Still, it’s a great looking concept art and hopefully we get to revisit this cage fight at a later point.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Nominated for Visual Effects Oscar

‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Nominated for Visual Effects Oscar

The Oscar nominations have finally arrived and it looks like Marvel Studios once again remains a strong contender in the Visual Effects department, as Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home was nominated. They join other projects like Dune, Free Guy, and No Time To Die in the category. Sadly, they once again did not receive any other nominations, while Denis Villeneuve’s latest film was quite the favorite at this year’s announcements including Visual Effects, Best Film, Film Editing, and more.

Marvel tends to land mainly in this category, which is a shame as there are many talented people involved with these projects. Black Panther was the first Marvel Studios project to beat the odds and even land a nomination for Best Picture, but that was quite an uncommon occurrence. It’s great to see other projects like Free Guy also land a nomination, which had some stunning visual effects playing on classic video game tropes. At this point, it’s anyone’s game but Dune or No Time to Die seems like the more likely choice to get chosen by the committee. Until the event takes place, all bets are open and we’ll see if the Marvel Studios projects can nab an Oscar this year.

‘Shang-Chi’s Michelle Yeoh Reunites With Destin Daniel Cretton for ‘American Born Chinese’

It looks like the upcoming Disney+ series adaptation of American Born Chinese will become a Shang-Chi reunion, as Deadline reported that Michelle Yeoh will reunite with director Destin Daniel Cretton, who will direct the project. The series is part of 20th Television’s production for Disney Branded Television, which is eyeing a production start sometime this month in Los Angeles.

It’ll adapt the Gene Luen Yang graphic novel with Kelvin Yu attached as its showrunner and executive producer. It’s unclear how many episodes Cretton will direct from the series, but is also acting as executive producer alongside Jake Kasdan, Erin O’Malley, Melvin Mar, and more. She joins a cast that consists of MacGyver‘s Ben Wang, Mortal Kombats Chin Han, Daniel Whu (Reminiscience), Just Add Magic’s Sydney Taylore, Jim Liu, Ke Huy Quan (Finding Ohana), and Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season).

  • Simu Liu Shares His Hopes for the Upcoming ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel

Simu Liu Shares His Hopes for the Upcoming ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel

One of 2021’s best surprises was Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. After the film’s financial and critical success, it was given the green light for a sequel with director Destin Daniel Cretton signed on to return. The possibilities for the next entry seem endless, but franchise star Simu Liu already knows what he’d like to see happen when his titular hero returns to the big screen.

At the end of Ten Rings, Shang-Chi finds himself in possession of his father’s iconic weapons, the aforementioned Ten Rings. In a conversation with Complex Canada, Liu stated that he’d love to explore how his character handles this development:

I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know? It kind of consumed his father, consumed Wenwu. I’m curious as to how someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings. Just this idea of all of a sudden being gifted something that’s so powerful but also so dangerous.

    Simu Liu

As he continued, the actor revealed that he’s also very interested in seeing Shang-Chi interact more with the wider MCU, such as participating in some fun team-ups.

And then the other big question I have is, you know, in what way does Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? Who are you going to see? What kind of crazy team-ups? What kinda tie-ins, Easter eggs? I’m just as much in the dark as everyone else, so I don’t know anything, but I’m excited to dive into that process.

    Simu Liu

Liu may get his wish. The last we saw him, Marvel’s signature martial artist was being introduced to the Avengers by the Sorcerer Supreme, Wong. Unfortunately, audiences will likely have to wait until the untitled second Shang-Chi eventually hits theaters to know if any of the leading man’s wishes come true.

  • Jessica Henwick Says “Never Say Never” on Potential Continuation of Her ‘Iron Fist’ Storyline

Jessica Henwick Says “Never Say Never” on Potential Continuation of Her ‘Iron Fist’ Storyline

Marvel Studios is going through an interesting phase, as they reintroduced characters from the Marvel TV era into their universe. Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson Fisk and Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil made their return in style, which opened the floodgates of others making a potential return. It made many wonders if they’ll also answer some questions left behind from the series, such as Colleen Wing’s new time as the Iron Fist. Luckily, during her press tour for The Matrix Resurrections, actress Jessica Henwick gave her opinion on a potential return.

Look, the way we left Iron Fist, spoiler alert, Colleen has the power and she’s in a really good place. I would love to revisit her. That character meant a lot to me and really changed my life. And I would love to revisit her one day, but it would really have to be the right place, and the right time, and the right script, but never say never

    Jessica Henwick

What is interesting to point out is that she was offered a role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but declined due to her hope to revisit Wing’s storyline. It’s unclear if this is even something that Marvel Studios is willing to revisit given the overall reception of that part of The Defenders, but we’ll see if her choice may have sparked an interest to continue further down that path after all.

  • ‘Iron Fist’ Star Jessica Henwick Turned Down ‘Shang-Chi’ To Keep Hope Alive for the Return of Colleen Wing

‘Iron Fist’ Star Jessica Henwick Turned Down ‘Shang-Chi’ To Keep Hope Alive for the Return of Colleen Wing

Netflix’s Iron Fist seemed to finally be finding its identity when it was canceled following its second season. A big part of that identity was giving then budding star Jessica Henwick more to do. By season’s end, Henwick’s character, Colleen Wing, wielded the power of the Iron Fist of K’un Lun and, presumably, would have had a major arc in a third season.

Henwick is now starring in the recently released Matrix Resurrections and revealed that, in order to land that role, she passed on one in Marvel Studios Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. After that report, fans speculated, wildly as always, that Henwick was set to reprise the role of Wing in Shang-Chi. Thankfully, in an interview with a trade,Henwick clarified that not only was she NOT going to be playing Wing in Shang-Chi, but also that she passed on the role in order to keep hope alive that she might reprise the role sometime down the road.

If I did [Shang-Chi], I would effectively be putting Colleen to bed. It wasn’t the main factor, but it definitely came up in conversation. I love Colleen. She changed my life. Of course, if I was given the opportunity to revisit her, I would, but I just don’t know how likely that is. Charlie [Cox] knew about that opportunity years ago. He already knew it was happening. I think I would have heard by now if there were any plans with Colleen.

As Henwick noted, plans for Daredevil star Charlie Cox to return were in place for some time ahead of his work on Spider-Man: No Way Home and the fact that she hasn’t heard anything about a potential future for Wing could easily be construed as the end for the character; however, as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye have proven, there can be life after Netflix death for these characters.
