    Lucasfilm Sets Two Star Wars Series for 2024 Release on Disney Plus

    Lucasfilm will release two brand new Star Wars streaming series next year. According to an official release, The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew are slated to debut on Disney Plus in 2024. Neither series was given a release window in the announcement.

    The Acolyte will be Lucasfilm’s first live-action Star Wars project set during the High Republic era and “will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes but discovers the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”

    Directed by Jon Watts (Marvel Studios Spider-Man trilogy), Skeleton Crew, which “tells the story of four kids who find themselves lost in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home,” is set during the same New Republic era as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. The series was originally set to debut in late 2023 but recent rumors have it facing a nearly one-year delay to the end of 2024.

    Some fans may be a bit disappointed to find out that neither a fourth season of The Mandalorian nor a second season of Andor are currently set for release in 2024. It was also believed that a second season of Tales of the Jedi, a canonical animated anthology, would debut in 2024 but there’s no mention of it in the release.

    SWCE: ‘Skeleton Crew’ Confirmed for 2023 Release on Disney+

    Even after having seen or heard very little about Jon Watt‘s Skeleton Crew Disney+ series, it seems that after a little showcase during this year’s Star Wars Celebration, it was given a release date. Up until today, we only knew of Jude Law was the main part of the cast. Luckily, they also used the opportunity to unveil the small group of kids that are about to face the biggest adventure they’ve ever had across a galaxy far far away.

    Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Robert Timothy Smith, and Kyriana Kratter have joined the production that is now set for a 2023 release. We still haven’t received a first look at the franchise’s future or even a clear hint of when we can expect it, but it seems that it’ll likely release at some point later in the year with Ahsoka also set to arrive. The series has a dream team of directors giving us what might be the most unique project yet in the franchise and here’s hoping the wait for footage outside of the Star Wars Celebration event won’t need too long.

    Here’s a rather surprising revelation. During the Star Wars Celebration event, we found out when the idea for Jon Watts‘s Star Wars project, Skeleton Crew, came together. While we initially expected that the first discussions happened while working on Spider-Man: No Way Home. Given that he was attached to direct Fantastic Four at the time and suddenly dropped out to tackle the Disney+ series.

    As it turns out, he initially pitched the idea while filming the previous Spider-Man film, Far From Home. It seems it took some time for the project to come together but the core idea of a group of kids going out on an adventure throughout the galaxy but getting more than what they may have bargained for. Those lucky to attend the event also got a first glimpse at the series with this behind-the-scenes shot.

    SWCE: The Directing Team of ‘Skeleton Crew’ Revealed

    Over the past several weeks, an impressive collection of talent was revealed to have directed episodes of the upcoming Star Wars streaming series Skeleton Crew. The Daniels, David Lowery and Jake Schrier were all rumored to have helmed episodes the New Republic era show but Lucasfilm remained mum. Now, those 3 have been confirmed and a few more have been revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2023.

    Creator Jon Watts, Bryce Dallas Howard and Lee Isaac Chung were revealed to have directed episodes of the series during the Lucasfilm Showcase Panel.

    Skeleton Crew starring Jude Law, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith will stream on Disney Plus in late 2023.

    Though the project has long since completed filming and is now in post-production, the Star Wars streaming series Skeleton Crew continues to sound more promising by the day. Billed as an Amblin-esque adventure set in the Galaxy far, far away, Skeleton Crew has assembled quite the group of directors. Now a new report suggests another hot name has joined the list.

    According to One Take News, Jake Schreier directed an episode of the series for Lucasfilm. Schreier Joins The Daniels and David Lowery on an impressive list of talented directors who have worked with creator Jon Watts behind the camera.



    Skeleton Crew tells the story of four kids who find themselves lost in in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home.

    A year ago, Schreier was known more for his work on music videos than major projects. That all changed when Marvel Studios selected him to direct the 2024 film Thunderbolts, which will begin production this Spring. Schreier’s first major project, the streaming series Beef, hits Netflix soon and has already been the subject of a lot of positive critical buzz. Interestingly enough, Thunderbolts will serve as a bit of a Beef reunion for Schreier with star Steven Yeun and screenwriter Lee Sung Jin joining him on the Marvel Studios project.

    Lucasfilm has not officially confirmed the team of directors for Skeleton Crew. However, it’s expected that the project will be a part of the upcoming Star Wars Celebration presentation on April 7th in London.

    Jon Watts‘s Star Wars streaming series, Skeleton Crew, wrapped principal photography some time ago but news about the show’s stable of directors is only just now trickling out. After it was recently revealed that Academy Award-winning directors The Daniels were behind the camera for one episode, it’s now been confirmed that David Lowery directed an episode of the series as well.

    One Take News originally shared the news of Lowery’s association with the show, news that was quickly confirmed via THR’s Aaron Couch. Lowery has worked with Disney before, first on 2016’s Pete’s Dragon and recently on Peter Pan & Wendy, which will stream on Disney Plus in April.

    Skeleton Crew, like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, is set during the New Republic era of the Star Wars timeline. That largely unexplored timeframe, set between the fall of the Empire and the rise of the First Order, has proven to be fertile storytelling ground so far under the purview of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Skeleton Crew will star Jude Law and, according to Lucasfilm, “tells the story of four kids who find themselves lost in in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home.”

    RUMOR: ‘The Mandalorian’ May Have Introduced ‘Skeleton Crew’s Villain

    When the first episode dropped for the long-awaited third season of The Mandalorian, we met the pirate king Gorian Shard. While it’s uncertain if we might see more of him in this season, a new rumor from Bespin Bulletin may have pointed out that this was a way to set up the main antagonist in the upcoming Jon Watt‘s directed Disney+ Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew.

    There was a strong focus on the character during the episode, as his crew seemingly are obsessed with mentioning his name. They also went all out with the make-up that hinted at this character having a bigger role overall but we won’t know until more episodes are released from The Mandalorian.

    There is some uncertainty if the school that the pirates try to enter might even be the same where Jude Law‘s character works. It’s not confirmed but would make for some fun world-building by the Disney+ corner of Star Wars exploring its very specific connections.

    We’ve heard very little of the Disney+ series that is set to release at some point this year. We may get a first tease during the upcoming Star Wars Celebration and they might even confirm the appearance of Shard as one of its main antagonists. He also seems perfect for a series that wants to explore the pulpy side of the galaxy far far away.

    While Jon Watts was originally set to direct Fantastic Four after his success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, he suddenly pulled back on the project. Shortly after he’d announce his involvement with a new Star Wars series titled Skeleton Crew. It wasn’t until Star Wars Anniversary that we’d find out about it but it turns out the idea was actually going back and forth between Jon Favreau and Jon Watts during their time on the set for Spider-Man as revealed during the D23 Expo panel.

    During the panel, we also got our first look at Jude Law‘s mysterious character, as shared by our own Charles Murphy attending the event.

    We’ve long been waiting for news for Lucasfilm and it seems that shortly before the big event arrived a few tidbits have already found their day online. In this case, two cast members that’ll join Jon Watts‘ upcoming Skeleton Crew. According to Cinelinx, they have cast Kyriana Kratter and Ravi Cabot-Conyers for the series that is rumored to explore four kids on an unlikely adventure throughout space. They may be likely officially confirmed later today during the panel. They’re the first hint at the lead cast that we’ve gotten besides the only confirmed casting of Jude Law from Star Wars Celebration.

    ‘Skeleton Crew’ Disney+ Series Budget Among ‘Star Wars’ Highest, Eyeing 2023 Release

    Star Wars has mostly become a Disney+ exclusive franchise for now, as we’re still waiting for any news on the mysterious films that were promised back during Disney’s Investors Day by CEO Kathleen Kennedy. Until now, it seems those productions are continuing to face various delays but nothing is standing in the way of their Disney+ series. Among them is Jon Watts‘ upcoming Skeleton Crew. In a new piece by Hollywood Reporter, we may have gotten our first tease of just how big this project may end up being.

    A new piece on the California tax credits gained by big projects also includes a brief statement on some Skeleton Crew details. It seems the project’s production budget is around $136M, which would put it among the highest costing series for the streaming service. The production also is receiving $20.9M in credit from California. The project by the Spider-Man: No Way Home director is currently eyeing a 2023 release but no further details on when that might be.

    There were reports that Obi-Wan Kenobi had a lower production budget than even The Mandalorian, but as we have little official confirmation, we can only theorize. So, it’s surprising we get a more exact number with Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. It’ll be exciting to see just how Watts will tackle this project and how the story of a group of kids getting lost in space might be explored. With Jude Law attached, we are still waiting for some casting announcements but if it’s eyeing a 2023 release, production ill likely start rather soon.
