‘Absolute Batman’ Adult Animated Series Officially Greenlit with Scott Snyder Showrunning

One of the biggest publishing phenomenon in modern comic book history is officially making the jump to the screen. During a blockbuster joint presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival today, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios blew the doors off the auditorium by announcing that an Absolute Batman adult animated series is actively in development.

In a massive win for creative continuity, Scott Snyder—the superstar writer who launched the comic line to unprecedented heights—will serve as the executive producer and showrunner. Nick Dragotta, the co-creator and artist behind the book’s signature hyper-kinetic look, is also locked in as a producer.

With the comic line having already smashed records by selling over 6 million copies (with Issue #1 hitting an incredible 11th printing), this adaptation is the ultimate no-brainer. But for casual fans wondering why the internet is losing its mind over a 7-foot-tall Caped Crusader, here is why Absolute Batman has broken containment—and how it fundamentally rewrites the rules of the Dark Knight.

    The Absolute Difference: The Anti-Billionaire

The core thesis of the Absolute Universe imprint is a simple, terrifying question: What happens when you strip Earth’s greatest heroes of all their structural advantages?

While traditional, mainline Bruce Wayne is a multi-generational billionaire ninja backed by unlimited WayneTech resources, an untouchable mansion, and a loyal butler, the Absolute version is a complete, working-class inversion:

    • No Manor, No Money: This 24-year-old Bruce Wayne grew up in Crime Alley without a dime to his name. His father Thomas was killed in a mass shooting at the Gotham Zoo, his mother Martha is still alive (maybe), and he works by day as a blue-collar civil engineer.
    • The Scrap-Metal Arsenal: He doesn’t have high-tech bat-wings or military-grade satellites. He built his suit from scratch. His cape isn’t a glider—it’s a weighted, articulated set of hooks used to scale buildings and whip enemies like a weapon.
    • The Battle-Axe Logo: In perhaps the most metal design choice of the decade, the massive, blocky Bat-symbol on his chest isn’t just a logo—he literally rips it off his armor to use as a double-headed battle-axe in close-quarters combat.

    Reimagining the Rogues

Because Bruce didn’t spend his youth traveling the world training with league assassins, his relationship to Gotham’s underworld is deeply personal. In this universe, classic Batman characters like Selina Kyle, Waylon Jones (Killer Croc), Harvey Dent, and Eddie Nygma are framed around a revisionist childhood dynamic.

The power balance is also entirely flipped. The world they face is defined by systemic corruption, wealth, and unchecked power. Adversaries are monstrous, nightmarish entities spawned by a fallen environment—meaning Bruce has to rely entirely on his raw human determination and massive physical size to push back against impossible odds.

Snyder has explicitly stated his goal was to create a Batman who faces the exact real-world anxieties about wealth, power, and corruption that a new generation does. Instead of maintaining a comfortable 80-year-old status quo, Absolute Batman moves with the frantic, high-stakes momentum of a modern prestige manga. It’s a mission to prove that even when stripped of every advantage, one good person can still change the world.

For decades, the fantasy of a billionaire using infinite resources to wage a private war on crime felt untouchable. But today, a working-class kid swinging an axe at the foundations of an unjust system resonates on a completely different emotional frequency. By putting Scott Snyder directly in the driver’s seat as executive producer and showrunner, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are ensuring that this animated adaptation will retain every ounce of the raw, uncompromised, and utterly brutal vision that made the comic a historic success.

‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 Episode Titles Tease Weapon X, Danger and the Return of a Major Character

His name is Gambit and he told you to remember it…and it sounds like he’ll be back to haunt the X-Men in the final two episodes of X-Men ’97 Season 2.

X user @hexfacilitycom has spilled the details on the release dates, episode titles and brief synopses for the new batch of episodes and they indicate that the former X-Man, who sacrificed himself in the attack on Genosha, will indeed return as a Horseman of Apocalypse in Episode 8, “Dead Man’s Hand.”

    https://x.com/i/status/2068348750548848812

The episode, which is scheduled to stream on August 5th, will see “the X-Men confront a ghost from their past.” And it seems that episode sets up the season finale in which the team’s “past comes back to haunt them.” The finale is almost certainly a reference to the fallout of time travel shenanigans in the first four episodes.

Checkout the episode titles and release dates for Season 2:

Days of Past Future (July 1)
A Force to be Reckoned With (July 1)

  • Review: ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2

    Review: ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2

If Season 1 of X-Men ’97, Marvel Animation’s revival of X-Men: The Animated Series revived the heart of the beloved classic cartoon, Season 2 reanimates its soul…at least that’s what it seems like through the first four episodes of the sophomore season.

While Season 1 provided a nostalgic trip to the 90s, full of feel-good releases of dopamine and serotonin, Season 2 delivers a far more intoxicating rush, releasing a surging cocktail of chemicals for those who loved not only the original show but the true vastness of the X-Men’s comic book lore.

The first four episodes manage to address the Season 1 cliffhanger with multitudinous references to the original series while also priming the audience for something entirely new. And so, the first four episodes of Season 2 work as a fulcrum between the return to the emotional center of Season 1 and the very intentional shift in the purpose of the new episodes, which seems to be to remind audiences of the incredible depth and breadth of the X-Men mythology.

Whether in the comics, live-action or animation, the mutant have never needed to interact with the rest of the Marvel universe. As fun as the crossovers can be, the mutants have their own interesting heros and villains capable of leading some of The House of Ideas greatest stories and Season 2 makes it clear that Cable and Apocalypse are chief among them.

Full of the timey-wimey shenanigans that have long been a staple of their stories, Season 2 of X-Men ’97 fully embraces the full weirdness of the X-Men’s time travel adventures. By taking on En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse in the past, present and future, the sophomore season holds the potential of seeing each team dealing with the fallout of the others’ actions across time…and it also clearly seems to set the stage for an impending schism not only between Charles and Magneto but also between core members of the team.

Though it’s just four episodes, X-Men ’97 feels like a fresh spin on a classic X-Men tale. The animation remains top tier and the action sequences continue to be inventive and show that there are plenty of ways to continue to let these mutants evolve on screen.

  • Disney Reveals When Oscar-Winning ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Hits D+

Disney Reveals When Oscar-Winning ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Hits D+

Disney+ Media Relations has officially announced that James Cameron’s Oscar®-winning global blockbuster, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will stream exclusively on Disney+ starting June 24.

Read my Avatar: Fire and Ash review.

The third film in the phenomenally successful Avatar franchise was a major theatrical event upon its December 2025 release. It grossed a worldwide total of $1.48 billion and earned an Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects. The film was praised by critics and fans alike for its grand spectacle, thrilling action, and “spectacular visual effects, dazzling new environments, and stunning new creatures“.

The movie dominated the domestic box office for five consecutive weeks. However, its theatrical staying power did not match its predecessors, as it fell out of the top five in only its seventh weekend of release, a record pace compared to the original Avatar (12th weekend) and The Way of Water (11th weekend). Despite this, it was reported to be holding stronger than its 2022 predecessor in the early weeks of its run.

The film will join the existing Avatar Collection on Disney+, which includes the first two installments in the series and the documentary Fire And Water: Making The Avatar Films.

    Synopsis and Creative Team

Avatar: Fire and Ash returns audiences to Pandora with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family. After living amongst the Metkayina Clan in Pandora’s picturesque reefs, and still recovering from a family member’s death at the hands of the RDA, the Sullys attempt to protect another loved one. Aiding them are the peaceful Tlalim Clan, also known as the Wind Traders, who sail the skies. However, their journey is cut short when they are attacked by members of the Mangkwan Clan, or the Ash People, who blame the deity Eywa for the volcanic devastation of their home.

The Oscar®-winning film was directed by James Cameron and features a screenplay by Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver. The story was crafted by Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. The all-star cast features Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, Jack Champion, and Britain Dalton, among others.

  • Rumored ‘ViSiONQUΞST’ Synopsis Teases Man on the Run

Rumored ‘ViSiONQUΞST’ Synopsis Teases Man on the Run

Though it has been in development since late-2022, details about the Paul Bettany-led Vision-centric series–including an official title–proved difficult to pin down. That all changed during New York Comic Con 2025 when Bettany made a surprise appearance to discuss the series, now confirmed as VisionQuest. With the project now set for an October 14th debut, details have begun to emerge, including a potential synopsis that sets the stage for Vision to be a synthezoid on the run.

Shared by social media scooper My Time To Shine Hello, the synopsis indicates that while Vision is attempting to reconnect with his memories, a bounty forces him to change course.

The Vision, rebooted and having escaped those who sought to use him as a weapon, has been in hiding. His quest for new meaning and discreet existence is interrupted when a bounty is placed on his head, forcing Vision to forge real connections and embrace found family if he’s to survive

    -Possible synopsis for VisionQuest

Showrunner Terry Matalas previously explained that the series would follow a “Vision who has died and come back to life…going through a bit of an identity quest.” Part of that quest will involve a heavy dose of artificial intelligences that, like Vision, are part of Tony Stark’s legacy, including Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E, Jonathan Sayer as U, James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H, and James Spader as Ultron, all of whom may be the “found family” teased in the synopsis.

And if that won’t put enough on the plate if the Synthezoid Avenger, the soul of his son Tommy is now inhabiting the body of Thomas Shepard, played by Ruaridh Mollica. Suffice it to say, there will be quite a bit going on in VisionQuest, however, where and when it takes place may just make things even more complicated.

  • DC Studios Jimmy Olsen Spin-Off Title Leaks Online

DC Studios Jimmy Olsen Spin-Off Title Leaks Online

According to a fresh update via a new Writers Guild of America (WGA) production registry leak has seemingly unmasked the official final title for James Gunn‘s Superman mockumentary spin-off series: American Villain.

The project, which initially made waves under the since-debunked rumored title DC Crime, is moving forward aggressively at HBO, bringing a meta, comedic lens to the grounded underworld of Metropolis.

When news of a Daily Planet-centric true-crime anthology series first leaked, fans were rightly thrilled to see American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault tapped as the showrunners. Titling the show American Villain is a direct nod to Yacenda and Perrault’s highly-praised Netflix series. It signals to the audience exactly what the tone is: a highly serialized, deadpan, high-production true-crime parody set within a world where super-crime is a daily reality.

Gunn famously went to bat on social media last year to state that the project had “never been titled DC Crime, even as a working title.” Perrault recently doubled down, teasing that they were actively “tossing around some names” that avoided standard superhero naming conventions. The WGA filing indicates they finally pulled the trigger.

Skyler Gisondo will fully anchor the series, reprising his breakout role as The Daily Planet’s resident photojournalist, Jimmy Olsen. Season 1 is locked to focus entirely on Gorilla Grodd, the hyper-intelligent, telepathic ape traditionally associated with The Flash’s rogues gallery and a member of the Legion of Doom

With writing teams actively logging work under the American Villain banner, the series is moving steadily through with a 2027 release looking increasingly likely.

  • ‘Paradise Lost’ Cancellation Rumors Entirely Debunked; WGA Registry Confirms Top-Tier Scribes Attached to DCU Project

Put the doom-posting to rest. Despite persistent internet rumors claiming James Gunn had quietly swept the Wonder Woman prequel series under the corporate rug, official Writers Guild of America (WGA) listings have confirmed that Paradise Lost is in active, high-priority development with an exceptional writing duo locked in.

The guild registry now formally links Kira Snyder and Janet Lin to the HBO Max series. Snyder is a phenomenal pull for a show billed as a gritty, manipulative look at an all-female society, bringing serious prestige pedigree from her acclaimed work on The Handmaid’s Tale and The 100. Lin perfectly balances the equation, carrying an elite history of handling complex ensemble dynamics on Bridgerton mixed with traditional genre experience from The Flash.

It’s an origin story of how this society of women came about. What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are the games that they play with each other to get to the top? I think it’s really exciting.

    -James Gunn

Gunn has previously teased that this prequel series will lean into the complex, darker structural realities of a mythological society. The historical foundation of the show is expected to treat the Amazons not as flawless superheroes, but as a complex political faction and reveal the “beautiful and ugly truths” behind it all.

Gunn recently said that the project was in “extreme development” and a WGA registry lock means the corporate wheels are actively turning behind the scenes. By hiring writers who specialize in ruthless institutional power struggles and elite character drama, DC Studios is making sure Paradise Lost delivers the exact “political intrigue” tone they promised.

  • A New Hope—Leslye Headland Open to ‘The Acolyte’ Season 2 Return

A New Hope—Leslye Headland Open to ‘The Acolyte’ Season 2 Return

The weather in the Star Wars universe might be constantly shifting, but Leslye Headland isn’t closing the door on the High Republic just yet. Following the sudden and highly publicized cancellation of The Acolyte back in 2024, the showrunner has dropped a new wave of comments that have fans making an immediate appeal to Lucasfilm’s creative brass.

In a brand-new profile published by Empire, Headland made it clear that despite the online vitriol and the streaming bubble burst, she is still completely down to bring her dark side narrative back to Disney+.

While Lucasfilm famously opted not to move forward with a second season due to dwindling viewership against a massive production budget, Headland revealed the show has been experiencing a noticeable streaming resurgence and a shift in public perception.

I would still want to do it! Absolutely,” Headland told Empire. “As more people discover it, I think people may want to see some form of the story come back… I’m having a resurgence of The Acolyte in my real life. I speak with people who are really big fans, and were disappointed in the cancellation.”

Season 1 ended on a series of massive, cliffhanger lore-drops—including the physical reveal of Darth Plagueis lurking in the shadows and Jedi Master Yoda’s looming complicity in a High Republic cover-up of the massacre at Brendok.

Had a renewal come through, Headland shared that her long-term plan was designed to act as a direct narrative runway into the sequel trilogy.

Season 2 would have delved further into the backstory of Qimir/The Stranger (Manny Jacinto), diving deep into his fractured relationship with Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh. It would have also focused on the dangerous web of Sith lineage between The Stranger, his new apprentice Osha, and his ultimate master, Darth Plagueis.

We did have a lot of stuff that we wanted to explore, including tying in lore to the sequels,” said Headland. “Getting into who exactly Manny’s character is, his connection with Vernestra, his connection with Plagueis, and then his connection with other sequel-established things.

The Acolyte still holds the unfortunate milestone of being the first live-action Disney+ Star Wars show to be out-and-out publicly canceled by the studio, a decision Headland admitted surprised her with its “swiftness,” making her willingness to return to the sandbox shows an immense amount of creative resilience. The Acolyte took bold, unprecedented structural risks by showcasing a fundamentally flawed Jedi Order and centering the emotional narrative around an active Sith dynamic. Leaving Darth Plagueis as a one-frame cameo feels like a massive disservice to the broader tapestry of the saga.

  • Marvel Confirms Fourth Season of Streaming Hit

Marvel Confirms Fourth Season of Streaming Hit

Fresh off the blockbuster trailer drop for Season 2, an exclusive Entertainment Weekly interview with the creators behind X-Men ’97 has revealed that a fourth season of the animated revival is already well in the works.

Executive Producer and legendary X-Men: The Animated Series veteran Larry Houston has officially confirmed that X-Men ’97 has already secured a commitment for Season 4 at the very least—and Marvel is fixing its biggest release schedule problem.

The most frustrating aspect of the X-Men ’97 phenomenon has been the agonizing two-plus year between the 2024 debut and the upcoming July 1, 2026 Season 2 premiere. According to Houston, Brad Winderbaum’s new animation framework has officially corrected the course to ensure mutants dominate Disney+ every single year.

They want everyone to know it’s only gonna be a year now between seasons, not two-and-a-quarter years. It’s gonna be a year until the next one and a year until the next one [after that]. They are on schedule now

    -Larry Huston

While fans are counting down the days to the July premiere, the creative brain trust is already living in the late 2020s. Houston revealed that the team has already approved, reviewed, and finalized all the scripts and animatics for Season 3, which is being spearheaded by new head writer and Marvel Television vet Matthew Chauncey. The team hasn’t stopped there. We are in season 4 giving script notes,” Houston added. So that’s how deep they are into the development.”

With Season 2 locked for July 1, 2026, Winderbaum’s annual mandate means Season 3 will arrive in Summer 2027, and Season 4 will land in Summer 2028.
(L-R): Beast (voiced by George Buza), Bishop (voiced by Isaac Robinson-Smith), Rogue (voiced by Lenore Zann), Professor X (voiced by Ross Marquand), Magneto (voiced by Matthew Waterson), and Nightcrawler (voiced by Adrian Hough) in Marvel Animation’s X-MEN ’97 Season 2, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Marvel. © 2026 Marvel. All Rights Reserved.

Animation takes an incredibly long time to produce, and nothing kills momentum like a two-year hiatus. By greenlighting and scripting Season 4 before Season 2 even hits Disney+, Winderbaum is treating X-Men ’97 like a traditional, high-output network television show rather than a sporadic streaming novelty. It provides job security for the creative team, structural consistency for the animators, and a guarantee for fans that the soap-opera cliffhangers will get resolved on a strict, dependable schedule.

Between the live-action X-Men movie currently being penned by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, and an uninterrupted four-year block of X-Men ’97, the Children of the Atom have officially reclaimed their throne as the flagship priority of the Marvel brand.
