5 Alternate Versions of Kal-El Who Could Appear in ‘Superman’

Buzz has grown that DC Studios’ Superman will feature some sort of evil doppelgänger of the Man of Steel that David Corenswet‘s Kal-El will have to take on. Is it true? Who knows? Also, who cares? This type of buzz around CBMs is part of the process and it’s always fun to play with the possibilities and so we present…

5 Alternate Versions of Superman Who Could Appear in Superman!

To be fair, not everyone on this list is truly an alternate universe Superman. Perhaps it’s more accurate to label some as copies or imitations of the real deal. Regardless of the description, the idea remains the same: a Supes vs. Supes type battle will ensue.

    Bizarro

Certainly the most well-known alt Supes, El-Kal is probably not the odds-on- favorite to actually appear should these rumblings prove accurate. The idea of Nicholas Hoult‘s Lex Luthor already having been hard at work cloning Superman doesn’t seem to fit with what little is known about the film but a Bizarro World Bizarro does seem a bit more reasonable.

    Cyborg Superman

The Snyderverse tackled xenophobia pretty well so the Hank Henshaw version of the character may not make his way into the DCU but as is almost always the case with DC’s stable of characters, there’s another option. Would Kal-El’s uncle, Zor-El, the father of Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, be an option? Kara is rumored to be showing up in Superman, so perhaps her believed-to-be-dead daddy could show up…but that wouldn’t require Corenswet to double up, as is the rumor. So maybe a full-on cyborg built by one of Kal’s enemies could do the trick.

    The Eradicator

The buzz around a potential “second Superman” appearing in DC Studios’ Superman has grown steadily over the past few weeks. Nothing has been officially shared about James Gunn‘s 2025 film but with production underway, it’s possible that bits and pieces of the plot could have trickled out and the one heard the most is that David Corenswet will be playing two versions of Kal-El.

A character who has been reinvented over the years, the most recent version of the Eradicator went head-to-head with Kal-El over his choice to father a human/Kryptonian hybrid, Jonathan Kent. They won’t work in Gunn’s Superman since Corenswet’s Kal is still in the early days of his heroic journey; however, the original idea of the Eradicator–as devised by Roger Stern and Curt Swan–as a creation intent on preserving Kryptonian culture by ERADICATING all non-Kryptonian cultures could work.

    Red Son

In 2003, Mark Millar‘s Superman: Red Son brilliantly explored a “what if” scenario that revolves around baby Kal-El being found and raised by Russians rather than in Smallville. In Red Son, Lex Luthor uses some of Soviet Superman’s DNA to create “Superman Two”, an abomination of a clone who becomes weaponized by the U.S. government. Gunn could pull a switcheroo in Superman, having the Russians creating Супермен 2 to take on the original version. Gunn would certainly take some heat for coming so close to the plot of Superman IV but it would likely only come from people who never saw that movie anyway.

    Ultraman

Outside of the Nazi version of Overman, Ultraman is the most despicable version of Kal-El in the Multiverse. The Kal-El of Earth-Three, Ultraman is truly the embodiment of everything Superman should never be. Selfish rather than selfless; heartless rather than compassionate; simply evil rather than purely good. Ultraman leads the Crime Syndicate, an evil version of the Justice League and is actually strengthened by exposure to kryptonite. Given what Gunn has said about his ideas for Superman in the film, Ultraman could be the best choice on this list for the film’s antagonist.

Production on James Gunn‘s Superman has picked up stateside in Atlanta and it didn’t take long for the first photos from the set to make their way online.

Just Jared has just released photos of Maria Gabrielle de Faria’s villain known as The Engineer. Whether it’s just an early iteration of the character’s costume or if Gunn decides to go a totally different direction for the DCU, the photos show a very different look for the character than in the comics.

James Gunn Shares First Look at DC Studios ‘Superman’ as Production Gets Underway

On Superman’s birthday, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn gave fans of the Man of Steel a present. Via Instagram, Gunn revealed both the first look at the design for the new film’s crest of the House of El and a title change. Originally known as Superman: Legacy, the film is now simply titled Superman.

A silver and black version of the logo, inspired by Mark Waid and Alex Ross‘ limited DC comic book series Kingdom Come, was first seen following a table read but Gunn has given fans a full color view of the crest.

Gunn released the look from an undisclosed location and indicated that production on the film had begun. Given the snow sprinkled over the crest, it’s possible Gunn is also teasing a trip to the Fortress of Solitude. If that’s the case, production may well have begun in Hell, Norway as we indicated previously.

  • BREAKING: James Gunn Finds His Lex Luthor in Nicholas Hoult

BREAKING: James Gunn Finds His Lex Luthor in Nicholas Hoult

It looks like the rumors were true, as many hints dropped that Nicholas Hoult was in the running for a role in the upcoming Superman Legacy movie, which James Gunn will direct. As he took over as the newly minted co-CEO of DC Studios, he has made it his mission to re-establish the iconic comics universe with one of its most iconic heroes.

Now, it’s been revealed that Hoult has gotten a role in the film. While he was eyed to potentially becoming Superman, the role went to David Corenswet, who’ll appear next to Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Yet, he has gotten an even juicier role, as the former X-Men will take on the iconic bald icon, Lex Luthor.

It’ll be interesting to see what his approach will be to the role. The announcement also comes at a perfect time just after the SAG strike wrapped up, but it’s unclear if he may have already gotten the role before that took place. Either way, Hoult has been campaigning for a major role in a DC film for some time so it’s great to see his patience result in him becoming an iconic character like Luthor.

  • ‘Superman: Legacy’ adds María Gabriela De Faría as DC Villain

‘Superman: Legacy’ adds María Gabriela De Faría as DC Villain

The moment the SAG strikes end, all the casting news seems to drop as fast as it can. The next major addition to James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has arrived as Angela Spica, better known as The Engineer. Venezuelan actress María Gabriela De Faría will be taking on the role after having worked on various Fox comedies.

What makes this character addition interesting is that she’s a DC character introduced in The Authority Vol. 1 #1 back in 1999. The new DC Universe that is being set up by James Gunn is poised to introduce the superhero group to the world later down the line. So, the addition makes sense if they are potentially planting the first seeds early on in this storyline.

It’s still unclear what we should expect from the DC film, as while we expected a back-to-basics storyline for Superman, Gunn’s vision is more focused on building the future. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran is attached to produce and the film is set to hit its 2024 July release date so production is expected to start sooner than later.

  • Ana Nogueira to Write DC’s ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’

Ana Nogueira to Write DC’s ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’

It’s been a while since we were first introduced to James Gunn’s new DC cinematic slate that’ll kick off a brand new era for the brand. After 2023 showed its scars with pretty much every release even the high-profile The Flash, many wondered what the future would look like. Warner Bros. is currently also in the news for its questionable decision with Coyote vs. Acme. With the strikes over though, some news is finding its way online and it looks like the first non-James Gunn-directed project is moving forward.

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film focuses on Clark Kent’s cousin and it looks like they got quite an addition. Ana Nogueria is attached to write the project and it’s kind of a reunion, as she originally was working on a spinoff project from The Flash back in 2022, which would’ve seen Sasha Calle in the leading role.

It’s still uncertain if they will build upon her original pitch of the project, or we might have to expect something different given the franchise’s new direction. Taking the comic Woman of Tomorrow as inspiration is also a way to make the character stand out from her famous cousin, who’ll be the center point of starting the new DCEU franchise with Superman Legacy. It’ll be interesting to see who also might be in the director’s chair for the project.

  • ‘Barry’s Anthony Carrigan Joins ‘Superman: Legacy’ as Metamorpho

‘Barry’s Anthony Carrigan Joins ‘Superman: Legacy’ as Metamorpho

Seems like James Gunn has been quite a busy casting for his upcoming film Superman Legacy. While all eyes were on who exactly would end up taking on the role of Superman and Lois Lane, he has been quietly gathering some other DC Comics heroes that’ll have an unknown role in the project. Recently, it was revealed that Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced have joined the production in some familiar roles to comic fans. Now, one more has been added to the list.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the classic character of Rex Mason, better known as Metamorpho, has joined the cast. He will be played by Anthony Carrigan, who recently had a standout role in the HBO series Barry and even showed up in the DC series Gotham. So, he’s not new to the world of heroes.

Seems these announcements and finalized casting choices are being made with the SAG-AFTRA strike on the horizon. The film is set to release on July 11th, 2025 but if the strike moves forward, they’ll have to push back the release quite a bit as they were eyeing a production start early next year. With some time to go, who knows what else might happen by then as well.

The big question is what role these heroic characters will have. Who knows if they are an actual integral part of the story, which would be a shame given the importance of giving Superman his own film that is less pure set-up but an introduction to this new world. It makes you wonder if Gunn is more focused on setting up his new DC Cinematic Universe but it’s a given as he’s the CEO of DC Studios and the director/writer of the first “true” entry in the franchise.

  • BREAKING: James Gunn Has Found His Superman and Lois Lane

BREAKING: James Gunn Has Found His Superman and Lois Lane

The wait has finally come to an end. Superman Legacy director James Gunn has seemingly found his leading duo. After weeks of testing, even going as far as last week to having various duos in costume to enact scenes for the film, Gunn has seemingly settled on who David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan to become the leading pair in the first true DC Cinematic Universe film directed and written by the co-CEO of DC Studios.

Corenswet is taking on a major role for this film, as he’ll not only be in the shadow of Snyderverse’s Henry Cavill but also have to set up the entire DC Cinematic Universe. All their plans ride on the success of this film and it’s no wonder that they went all out to ensure that they have the right duo together to show what this new franchise is all about.

Corenswet is most known for his break-out role as Ryan Murphy in The Politician. He also has worked on projects like Pearl, We Own This City, and is about to be seen in the Twister sequel, Twisters. Brosnahan has quite the career with her work on projects like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Blacklist, House of Cards, and is currently filming The Amateur. So, they definitely are bringing something new to the table and will hopefully get a good look at them in costume before production starts.

  • ‘Superman: Legacy’ Narrowing Down its Leading Duo & Lex Luthor

‘Superman: Legacy’ Narrowing Down its Leading Duo & Lex Luthor

It looks like James Gunn is still busy trying to find the next Superman and Lois Lane for his next film Superman Legacy. In its second week of screen testings, it seems that he may be slowly narrowing down who he wants in the role, while also potentially reaching out to who would take on the iconic villainous role of Lex Luthor in his newly established DC Cinematic Universe.

In a new entry of the Heat Vision newsletter from The Hollywood Reporter, they reveal that they have now paired up the potential cast members. Gunn has been busy casting for the feature film with the following pairings: Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan, David Corenswet with Emma Mackey, as well as Tom Brittney and Phoebe Dynevor.

Seems they were given several scenes in makeup and wardrobe as Clark Kent and Lois Lane, but also in costumes as the iconic superhero. He’s trying to make sure that they nail this casting, as their future development for the franchise may hinge on this very development. Surprisingly, this isn’t too dissimilar from how Ryan Reynolds‘ casting as Green Lantern went back in 2011.

That isn’t all, as it seems he’s also already looking to cast the villainous Lex Luthor for his film. At the moment, it seems that two brothers are being eyed, Alexander and Bill Skarsgard. Even Nicholas Hoult supposedly put himself at one point in the running before fully embracing a chance as Superman, but if he doesn’t get cast there’s still a chance. Gunn is currently hoping to start filming in early 2024.
