CW Cancels ‘The Winchesters’ and ‘Kung Fu’

CW is ready to enter a new phase of its lifespan, as it slowly starts moving away from the network shows that made it what it is today. Many expected that they will start axing shows left and right, as they are now under the new leadership of Nextstar and the rollout of cancelations has begun. The first victims of the new regime: the Supernatural spinoff The Winchesters and Kung Fu.

It’s not all bad news, as All American and Walker have been renewed for the 2023 to 2024 season, which puts Nexstar on its goal to make it profitable by 2025; something the network is famous for never being. Supposedly, we might not see more than two to four series airing a season on the network which is quite a step down from its usual network offerings.

Some big shows have been on CW like Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girls, Supernatural, The Flash, 7th Heaven, One Tree Hill, Smallville, Everybody Hates Chris, Gilmore Girls, and many more. Now, the future looks rather bleak for the network as they cut down greatly with some series still on the fence with supposedly only three shows getting a renewal.

They are likely going to bring back only one of the two DC shows with Superman & Lois being the bigger one, but it is also quite pricey compared to the cheap Gotham Knights; supposedly the cheapest show they ever produced, and not too surprising given its more street-level focus. They already have some of their biggest shows wrapping up this season with Riverdale, Nancy Drew, and The Flash but it’s unclear if they will roll out more series once CW is profitable, or if they will simply stick to fewer and fewer scripted shows as times goes on as they also haven’t ordered any new pilots during this development cycle.

  • ‘The Winchesters’ is The CW’s Most-Watched Series Debut This Season

‘The Winchesters’ is The CW’s Most-Watched Series Debut This Season

The CW debuted its Supernatural prequel series, The Winchesters, on Tuesday and while the numbers weren’t exactly anything to write home about – the series did earn the title of The CW’s most-watched debut so far this season in total viewers. The series premiere reportedly averaged 757,000 viewers. That makes it the network’s most-watched series debut since Naomi‘s premiere in 2022. The show’s premiere was also the CW’s most-watched telecast in its time period since June 2022 – a title formerly held by Superman & Lois.

The Winchesters is the network’s prequel series to the long-running Supernatural, which came to a close after fifteen seasons in November 2020. While the latter series centered on Dean and Sam Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, respectively, the prequel centers on their parents – John and Mary.

The Winchesters was one of many spinoff shows put into development at the CW over the years. Supernatural: Bloodlines was originally being developed to run during the 2014-2015 season, but the series was never picked up. While Wayward Sisters was announced as being in development in 2018 – that series, like Bloodlines, was passed over.

The Winchesters hails from the Supernatural trio of Robbie ThompsonJensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles. Thompson serves as a writer and showrunner on the series. Ackles’ Dean narrates the prequel series that is being called an “epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.”

  • Tom Welling Boards ‘Supernatural’ Prequel, ‘The Winchesters’

Tom Welling Boards ‘Supernatural’ Prequel, ‘The Winchesters’

Tom Welling is returning to the CW. The Winchesters producers and cast were on hand at New York Comic Con over the weekend, where they revealed that Tom Welling has joined the cast of the Supernatural prequel.

Welling is set to play the recurring character of Samuel Campbell, a character played by Mitch Pileggi in Supernatural. He is the father of Mary, played by Meg Donnelly, and is the patriarch of the Campbell Hunting family. He has taught his daughter everything she knows and is said to be a veteran Hunter that prefers actions over words; taking the “his way or the highway” approach to things. This, of course, creates a divide between him and his daughter — one they’ll need to fix when the duo teams up to save the world. Welling will debut as the character in the show’s seventh episode.

“When we were discussing casting the iconic character of Samuel Campbell, everyone felt it had to be someone who could step into the role and provide instant gravitas and history. Jensen and Danneel brought up the idea of Tom Welling and the second his name was mentioned we all knew he was the perfect person for the part. Tom is a fantastic actor and wonderful human, and we are so excited to be welcoming him to The Winchesters and the Supernatural Family.”

    Robbie Thompson

The Winchesters hails from the Supernatural trio of Robbie Thompson, Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles. Thompson serves as a writer and showrunner on the series that focuses Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents – John and Mary. Ackles’ Dean narrates the prequel series that is being called an “epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.”

The Winchesters will premiere on the CW on Tuesday, October 11th.
