‘Ironheart:’ Cree Summer Joins, More on Sacha Baron Cohen

As production on Ironheart looks to move production from Georgia to Chicago, the Disney+ series has added yet another cast member. Deadline has announced that Cree Summer has joined the series in an unspecified role.

Summer is perhaps known for her voice work. She has voiced characters in shows like The Proud Family, Rugrats, Danny Phantom, Friday: The Animated Series, The Spectacular Spider-Man, and Teen Titans Go! She’s next set to appear in Star Wars: Detours and The Magician’s Elephant.

The outlet also commented more on Sacha Baron Cohen‘s role in the series. Per Deadline, Cohen is thought to be appearing later in the series. The outlet believes Cohen’s mysterious character, thought to be Mephisto, will appear in episodes five and six, specifically. • ‘Nancy Drew:’ The CW Series to End with Season 4

‘Nancy Drew:’ The CW Series to End with Season 4

On Wednesday, The CW announced that Nancy Drew would end with its fourth season. The series, which stars Kennedy McMann in the titular role, will end following its upcoming fourth season. The news, of course, isn’t entirely surprising as the network was recently purchased by Nexstar. Production on Season 4 is currently underway, and the cast and crew were informed of the cancellation on Wednesday.

In a statement to the press, showrunners Noga Landau and Melinda Hsu commented on the show’s cancellation. The duo explains that they’re glad to have brought this story to life, and to be given the chance to end it intentionally and with kindness. “We are so honored and proud to have brought Nancy Drew’s iconic determination, individuality and resilience to life in a years-long collaboration with incredible creative talents in front of the camera, behind the scenes and among our studio and network partners,” they said. “Our hearts are full of gratitude, knowing that we are able to bring this chapter to a close with intentionality, inclusivity and kindness — and of course with plenty of sleuthing twists, supernatural scares and star-crossed romance along the way. We are especially indebted to our wonderful fan community, whose connection with our themes and stories has meant the world to us. Season four will be a worthy and resonant payoff for their continued love and support.”

The show’s cancellation comes after The CW canceled its spinoff series, Tom Swift, over the summer. That series ended its run with a single season after failing to draw in viewers. Reports suggested the first five episodes of that series had pulled in a measly 0.1 in the all-important 18-49 demographic. While the season 3 finale of Nancy Drew pulled in 0.08 in the same demographic. Neither are impressive, but Nancy Drew was pretty inline with most other CW titles.

Leading lady McMann thanked the fans for their support, expressing her thankfulness at bringing a character like Nancy Drew to life. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for every ounce of passion and kindness you have shared with me and with each other.”

As of right now, Nancy Drew does not yet have a release date for Season 4.

  • ‘True Detective’ Season 4 Adds Three to its Cast

‘True Detective’ Season 4 Adds Three to its Cast

HBO has been quite busy with quite a few adaptations on the way. While all eyes at the moment are on The Last of Us adaptation, they are already continuing their work on the fourth season of True Detective. With the subtitle Night Country, the anthology series will see Jodie Foster and Kali Reis taking the lead this time around. Now, the project which will be run by Issa López, has added to its cast with Aka Niviâna, Joel D. Montgrand, and Isabella Star Lablanc joining the production.

The story will explore the long winter nights in Ennis, Alaska as six men vanish after working on an Arctic Research Station. Foster will play the role of detective Liz Danvers alongside Reis‘ Evangeline Navarro. Niviâna will take on the role of Julia, who is Navarro’s sister who is battling demons. Montgrand is taking on the role of Navarro’s love interest Eddie Qavvik, who is a local musher. Danvers’ stepdaughter Leah will be played by Lablanc.

It’s definitely looking to be another promising entry in the anthology, which followed a different set of detectives each season. The first entry made quite a splash with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the leading roles. It’ll be interesting to see what they may add to this project and how it’ll stand out from the previous entries.

  • Seth Rogen’s ‘Sausage Party’ Returns With New Series

Seth Rogen’s ‘Sausage Party’ Returns With New Series

You read that title correctly, Seth Rogen‘s adult-animated film about talking grocery items is about to make a return. This time around, the story continues in an eight-episode TV series that’ll be titled Sausage Party: Foodtopia. It’ll stream on Amazon Prime Video but story details are being kept under wraps. The announcement from Rogen on Twitter highlights the returning cast of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, Edward Norton, and more.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg shared the following joint statement on the new series announcement.

Film used to be the superior art form to television, and we humbly reached the pinnacle of what can be achieved with film in our remarkable opus, Sausage Party. But now that film is completely dead and TV is the forever-king of entertainment, we’ve decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary televised masterpiece Sausage Party: Foodtopia.

    SethRogen and Evan Goldberg

The series will act as a sequel to the 2016 film, which followed the story of the sausage Frank, voiced by Rogen, and his love for the hot dog bun Brenda, played by Wiig. Curiously, it does seem like Salma Hayek is not returning for this series, as she played Teresa del Taco in the film and had a significant role. It’ll be interesting to see how they adapt this as a series, especially with its raunchy humor and the shock value of the original concept no longer being its main selling point. Perhaps humans will try to take back the grocery store that the food items took over, or some infighting due to their believes could lead to more carnage. Whatever it may be, it looks like we’re going to find out in 2024.

  • Official ‘Secret Invasion’ Site Reveals Emilia Clarke as Abigail Brand

Official ‘Secret Invasion’ Site Reveals Emilia Clarke as Abigail Brand

As information about Marvel Studios’ 2023 streaming series Secret Invasion trickled out during production, one detail that remained a tightly-guarded secret was the identity of Emilia Clarke’s character. Now it seems as though Marvel Studios may have inadvertently let the cat out of the bag.

An official Disney site has released several GIFs from the upcoming series, including one featuring Clarke entitled “It’s the Beginning Abigail Brand.” Rumors and reports have had Clarke playing multiple characters from Brand, to Skrull spy G’iah and even Skrull Queen Veranke.

    O

Of course, given that the series is an espionage thriller, it’s reasonable to question if Clarke really is Brand or if she’s a Skrull who is simming the character. Set photos showed Clarke’s character seemingly working with Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik, who is the villain of the series. In the comics, Brand is a half-alien/half-human mutant who worked with S.W.O.R.D. During the events of Secret Invasion, Brand played a key role in freeing Mr. Fantastic from Skrull imprisonment which helped lead to the end of the takeover.

Secret Invasion is currently slated for a Spring 2023 release on Disney Plus.

  • ‘Green Lantern:’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped to Focus on John Stewart

‘Green Lantern:’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped to Focus on John Stewart

HBO Max is looking to redevelop its previously announced Green Lantern series. The show, which hailed from producer Greg Berlanti and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, was originally set to star Finn Wittrock (Ratched) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as the respective Green Lanterns. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series will instead turn the focus over to John Stewart, one of DC’s first black superheroes.

Grahame-Smith has since departed the project after turning in eight scripts for the original series pitch. He was meant to serve as the showrunner on the project but ultimately chose to leave following the regime changes at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television and DC Comics. A new showrunner has yet to be revealed. The decision to redevelop the series was reportedly made after Walter Hamada‘s recent exit, as prior to his exit, the use of John Stewart was said to be off-limits.

With the series being overhauled, only Berlanti and his banner, Berlanti Productions, remain attached through Warner Bros. Television. Per THR, Marc Guggenheim, who was originally involved with the series, left before the series was initially retooled. It is of note that this overhaul of the series does not stem from the massive changes underway at DC and DC Studios as James Gunn and Peter Safran do not begin their new jobs until Nov. 1st.

The Green Lantern series is now back in early development and is expected to be developed at a slower pace than the original series, which was being fast-tracked last year.

  • ‘The Staircase’ Creator Joins ‘The Batman’s Arkham Asylum Spinoff as Showrunner

‘The Staircase’ Creator Joins ‘The Batman’s Arkham Asylum Spinoff as Showrunner

We’ve long wondered what exactly is happening with The Batman spinoff series focused on Arkham Asylum. While Colin Farrell‘s Penguin spinoff has recently started picking up speed, it seems that the untitled Arkham series is finally moving forward. Variety has shared that the creator of The Staircase, Antonio Campos, has joined the production as its showrunner. He will also act as executive producer and director for the series but only if his version gets the greenlight.

It should be noted that he’s the third writer to join the DC project, which has been announced all the way back in 2020. It originally started as a show focused on Gotham PD before it slowly merged into a project focused on the iconic insane asylum of Gotham. Terence Winter was originally attached to the project before Joe Barton took over, which was the point it took its current direction.

Matt Reeves is still attached to producing the series and he had hinted at it being a horror series that takes place in the same universe. There’s still no word if we should expect this project potentially acting as a sequel to the events of the first film or even as a prequel, especially with the untold story of how Barry Keoghan‘s Joker ended up in Arkham. Whatever direction the project takes, it’ll definitely be interesting and we’ll see if the project even starts rolling the cameras at some point.

  • BREAKING: James Gunn and Peter Safran to Lead DC Studios

BREAKING: James Gunn and Peter Safran to Lead DC Studios

DC has been desperately looking for Kevin Feige to lead their DC division to rival that of Marvel Studios. Up to this point, it didn’t seem like anyone was truly interested in the job, mostly due to the current development with Warner Bros. Discovery. Still, it seems their long search has not resulted in one but rather two new leads for the division.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tapped to lead the DC’s future film, TV, and animation slates. They will act as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, which was recently led by Walter Hamada under the title of DC Films. It’s definitely a curious development and we’ll see just how big their role will be under CEO David Zaslav, who is seemingly cutting down projects left and right. For now, it seems they have a four-year deal for now.

It seems that the two have been spotted for some time on the Warners lot meeting with Warner Bors. film co-chair Michael De Luca, but most assumed it could be for future projects. As it turns out, they have some bigger projects in mind. Though Gunn‘s role as co-CEO does raise the question of what his future as a director will look like. He is returning for Peacemaker Season 2, but he may have to pull back with the new workload on his back.

The title of DC Studios will likely pull in even more comparisons to Marvel Studios, but the question remains what exactly the plans are? At the moment, the studio still has multiple projects that take place in their own dimensions within the cinematic multiverse, but there’s no clear goal or if they will try to establish a “mainline” universe as the Marvel Cinematic Universe did. For now, we’ll have to see once actual plans come together.

  • James Gunn Teases His New Favorite MCU Character in the ‘Guardians’ Holiday Special

James Gunn Teases His New Favorite MCU Character in the ‘Guardians’ Holiday Special

Marvel Studios shocked the world today when they dropped the first trailer for their next Special Presentation, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, only a day after starting marketing on one of their next films, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. One of the biggest surprises in the teaser was the revelation that Hollywood icon Kevin Bacon would make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as a fictionalized version of himself. The actor has been jokingly referred to as an “Earth legend” by Chris Pratt‘s Star-Lord on multiple occasions, and it would appear his fellow Guardians took the phrasing to heart. According to the trailer, much of the Holiday Special will feature Dave Bautista‘s Drax and Pom Klementieff‘s Mantis attempting to kidnap Bacon as a present for a forlorn Peter Quill.

After the footage made its way online, director James Gunn took to his social media to comment on a very specific Tweet from, oddly enough, a full year ago. In October of 2021, Gunn stated that the Holiday Special would introduce his all-time favorite MCU character to fans of the franchise, resulting in months of theories as to who the creative could be talking about. Now, Gunn confirms that he had Bacon in mind the whole time, hinting that the actor’s role in the short film is a favorite of his.

As revealed by the trailer, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is set to debut on Disney+ on November 25th. The Special Presentation will act as a bridge for the long gap between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
