Warner Bros. Discovery to License Canceled HBO Max Shows Like ‘Westworld’

HBO Max shocked fans everywhere when it canceled Westworld after four seasons. The series, thought to be one of HBO Max’s biggest series, was canceled in November. At the time, it was unclear exactly why the show was canned, especially as it was rumored not to be over budgetary reasons. However, it looks like Westworld – along with other canceled titles – will have a chance at a new life.

It was revealed on Wednesday that Warner Bros. Discovery was seeking to license some of its canceled and pulled programming to third-party free ad-supported television channels. The move comes as HBO Max readies to remove titles like Westworld, The Nevers, Raised by Wolves, FBoy Island, Legendary and The Time Traveler’s Wife from the service.

In a statement released to the press, Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy celebrated the possibility of getting their series in front of new audiences. “We are incredibly proud of ‘Westworld’ and the remarkable work of our cast and crew. We are excited to have the opportunity to welcome a whole new audience to our show.”

Shows produced by Warner Bros. will be easier to license, while other projects like Gordita Chronicles and Love Life, which hail from Sony Pictures Television and Lionsgate Television, respectively, will prove to be a bit more complicated in the dealmaking process as those studios will have say over the negotiation process of any potential deals.

‘Westworld’ Has Been Canceled by HBO

In a shocking decision, HBO has decided not to renew Westworld for another season.

The series, which ran for four seasons on HBO, was thought to be one of the network’s biggest titles. During its run, the acclaimed series managed to earn an impressive 54 Emmy award nominations, which included a supporting actress win for Thandiwe Newton. Despite the show’s initial success, the series continued to lose viewers – and critics – following its third season and leading into Season 4.

News of the show’s cancellation comes about a month after co-creator Jonathan Nolan discussed his hopes for a fifth season. At the time, Nolan told the folks at Deadline that the plan was always for five seasons. “We always planned for a fifth and final season. We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them.”

HBO released a statement regarding the cancellation, noting the work the cast and crew have put in throughout the years. “Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey.”

  • ‘West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Westworld’ Season 4

‘West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Westworld’ Season 4

Westworld has hit the jackpot, as they have added West Side Story actress and Oscar winner Ariana DeBose in the fourth season. The actress has been on a hot streak after winning a Golden Globa, a SAG Award, and an Oscar for her performance as Anita in the Steven Spielberg remake of the classic musical. So, it’s no wonder that any project is trying to get her to join and it seems Westworld won out.

Sadly, details on her character remained undisclosed, but she will have a recurring guest star role throughout the series’ upcoming season. The news is also perfectly timed, as we just got the teaser trailer for the fourth season, which is given a vague description as “a dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” The trailers highlight just how far the series came from its initial season of a robot-filled Western holiday park.

DeBose is a fantastic addition and it’ll be interesting to see how her character plays into the story. She joins an already stacked cast that includes Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Aaron Paul, Angela Sarafyan, Luke Hemsworth, and Thandiwe Newton. We’ll see if we get more teases and cast additions as the show continues to build up to its upcoming season’s release.
