‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ Rewatch-Night of the Sentinels Part 1

X-Men: The Animated Series premiered in 1992 and quickly became a beloved adaptation of the popular Marvel Comics series. Known for its faithful portrayal of the iconic mutant superhero team, the show captivated audiences with its engaging storytelling, dynamic characters, and thrilling action sequences. Beginning March 20th, Marvel Animation will roll out an all-new revival of the series, X-Men ’97.

X-Men: The Animated Series kicked off with a two-parter which served as a compelling introduction to the world of the X-Men and the ongoing struggle between mutants and humanity. Let’s recap the series pilot episode, “Night of the Sentinels Part 1.”

Setting the Scene: A World Divided

The episode opens with a dramatic scene as a group of mutants, led by the powerful Magneto, clash with a squad of Sentinels, giant mutant-hunting robots created by the anti-mutant organization known as the Mutant Control Agency (MCA). This conflict sets the stage for the central conflict of the series: the tension between mutants and humans, and the fear and prejudice that drive the persecution of mutantkind.

    Introducing the X-Men

Against this backdrop, we are introduced to the main protagonists of the series: the X-Men, a team of mutants dedicated to fighting for peace and coexistence between mutants and humans. Professor Charles Xavier, the telepathic leader of the X-Men, operates out of his mansion headquarters in Westchester County, New York, where he trains and guides his students in the use of their powers.

    The Attack at the Mall

The episode focuses on Jubilation Lee, also known as Jubilee, a teenage mutant with the ability to generate explosive energy blasts from her hands. Jubilee struggles to control her powers and grapples with the fear of being discovered and persecuted for being a mutant. Her ordinary life is turned upside down when she is attacked by a group of Sentinels while attending a local mall with her friends.

As chaos erupts at the mall, Jubilee’s mutant powers manifest, attracting the attention of the Sentinels. In a thrilling action sequence, the Sentinels pursue Jubilee through the mall, causing destruction and panic as they hunt her down. Meanwhile, the X-Men, alerted to the Sentinel attack, spring into action to rescue Jubilee and confront the threat head-on.

    The X-Men in Action

Led by Cyclops, the field leader of the X-Men, the team arrives at the mall and engages the Sentinels in battle. Cyclops, with his optic blasts, leads the charge, while other members of the team, including Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, and Beast, use their unique powers and abilities to fend off the robotic attackers. The action-packed sequence showcases each X-Men’s powers and personalities, establishing them as formidable heroes united in their fight against injustice.

Amidst the chaos, the X-Men manage to rescue Jubilee from the clutches of the Sentinels, but not before she is injured in the confrontation. As Jubilee grapples with the revelation of her mutant abilities and the danger they pose, she is brought back to the X-Mansion, where Professor Xavier offers her sanctuary and guidance. Jubilee’s journey as a new recruit to the X-Men begins, as she learns to harness her powers and embrace her identity as a mutant.

    A World of Uncertainty

“Night of the Sentinels Part 1” concludes with a sense of uncertainty and foreboding, as the X-Men confront the looming threat of the Sentinels and the ongoing persecution of mutants. The episode sets the stage for the larger narrative of the series, exploring themes of prejudice, identity, and the struggle for acceptance in a world divided by fear and intolerance.

The episode serves as a gripping introduction to X-Men: The Animated Series, showcasing the iconic characters, high-stakes action, and thought-provoking themes that would come to define the show. With its compelling storytelling and dynamic animation, the episode lays the groundwork for the epic saga that unfolds throughout the series, captivating audiences and leaving them eagerly anticipating the next installment in the adventures of the X-Men.

  • Marvel Studios 2024 Slate Officially Revealed

Marvel Studios 2024 Slate Officially Revealed

In July 2022, Marvel Studios One Above All, Kevin Feige, unveiled a significant portion of the Multiverse Saga slate. At that time, 2023 was set to be the studio’s most ambitious year yet with 8 live-action projects set to roll out in theaters and on Disney +. The best-laid plans and all that and as 2023 comes to a close, 2 of those projects, Echo and Ironheart, have yet to stream and one of the films, Blade, has yet to begin production. As those projects began to get moved out of 2023, the shuffle was on and 2024’s took on a whole new look as well.

As originally presented at SDCC ’22, Marvel Studios 2024 slate included 4 films and 5 live-action streaming series. At the time, no dates were announced for any of the studio’s animated series. Things have certainly changed dramatically since then. In an official release from Disney, Marvel Studios entire 2024 slate is now composed of only 5 projects and only 3 of them (1 film and 2 streaming series) are live-action.

As per the official release, the studio’s year will kick off when all 5 episodes of Echo stream on January 9th. The untitled Deadpool sequel will be Marvel Studios’ theatrical release of 2024, debuting in theaters on July 26th. The final live-action project of the year, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, is officially set to stream at some point in the Fall which lines up with earlier reports of a September 19th target date.

Marvel will also roll out three animated streaming series over the course of 2024. The newly announced Eyes of Wakanda, produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, X-Men ’97 and the recently retitiled Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are all on the docket for the new year though no release windows were provided by Disney.

As becomes more evident every year, the slate is very fluid. Projects could be moved in or out of 2024 as any number of variables dictates.

Marvel Studios Sets 2024 Streaming Slate

Through a press release via Disney UK, Marvel Studios 2024 streaming slate has been revealed.

As has been expected for some time, 2024 will only see 3 Marvel Studios projects hit the streaming service: Echo, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and X-Men ’97.

Echo will kick off the year for the studio with all 5 episodes debuting simultaneously on Hulu and Disney + on January 10th. While no release date was given for Kathryn Hahn‘s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, it’s expected to begin streaming in September. Live Darkhold Diaries, X-Men ’97, a revival of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, doesn’t have a firm release date but has long been rumored to be debuting “early in 2024.”

  • REPORT Marvel Studios ‘X-Men ’97’ Series May Be Eyeing an Early 2024 Release

REPORT Marvel Studios ‘X-Men ’97’ Series May Be Eyeing an Early 2024 Release

Marvel Studios took quite a step back during 2023 with their Disney+ ventures. While we still have three live-action series set to release, it’s been a while since She-Hulk, Attorney at Law found its way into the service back in August. We’re still some weeks away until Secret Invasion will release, but it seems their latest animated venture might take just a tad bit longer than initially expected. Originally set for a Fall 2023 release during last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it seems we might have to wait until January of next year.

It seems that the US Copyright Office may be the leaker this time around. First discovered by @ScarletWitchUpd on Twitter, the series is seemingly scheduled to release on January 3rd, 2024. There’s a chance that it might just be a placeholder release date set by the copyright office for the pilot episode, as it supposedly is a pre-registration. Still, it wouldn’t be too surprising given that Echo is now set to release in November as a binge release.

Marvel Studios’ animated ventures have been showcased as something separate from the rest of their projects with the exception of What If…?. We’re still waiting for the second season of that series to release, but they generally have gone quiet on the various entries. We’ll have to wait just a bit longer but perhaps a trailer will arrive sometime in the fourth quarter that confirms the release date.

  • Beau DeMayo Sets the Scene for ‘X-Men ’97’ Season One

Beau DeMayo Sets the Scene for ‘X-Men ’97’ Season One

As Disney continues to delay Marvel Studios 2023 streaming slate, on project that was recently said to still be headed to the service this year is X-Men ’97. A revival of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97 was announced during 2021’s Disney Plus Day and the first ten-episode season has always been framed as starting right where X-Men: The Animated Series left off. During the recent X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event, X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo addressed that possibility and gave some insight into what to expect from the new show.

We’re gonna be picking up about several months after Professor X left Earth after being shot by Henry Gyrich and had to return to the Shi’ar homeworld to be with Lilandra,” DeMayo said of where X-Men ’97 begins. Gyrich’s attempted assassination of Xavier was broadcast for the whole world to see, something DeMayo says will come into play in the new season. “And what ends up happening is that assassination attempt has led to this wave of increased sympathy towards mutants and understanding.” What does that mean for the X-Men, who were used to being hunted and hated? According to DeMayo, it’s a more positive outlook than they’re used to and that will be an adjustment.

Despite the friends of humanity still having their mullets and getting all up in it, things are really starting to look up for mutants. And this is gonna kind of come to a head and leads our X-Men to say, ‘What does our future hold for us? We weren’t expecting this.

    Beau DeMayo

Not everyone on the team sees the same opportunity, however. According to DeMayo, Cyclops and Storm want to take charge in the absence of Charles and “carry on the dream”, something Magneto is intent on doing with them, while others see it as a chance to move on. Either way, X-Men ’97 is about facing the future, according to the showrunner.

As the X-Men are kind of looking at the future and, we’re going to be talking a lot about this, ‘How do you face the future? How do the X-Men do what they’ve been telling humanity to do for decades, which is embrace the future?

    Beau DeMayo

Will fans get to pick up the old storyline this year? Marvel Studios has yet to make anything official and recent rumblings have suggested that yet another release date shuffle may have taken place. So until you tune in for the first episode of the new season, don’t count your chickens.

  • Brief ‘X-Men ’97’ Synopsis Confirms the Big Bad of the New Series

Brief ‘X-Men ’97’ Synopsis Confirms the Big Bad of the New Series

During the 5 season run of X-Men: The Animated Series, the X-Men tangled with Mister Sinister on more than one occasion. Sinister did as Sinister does, harvesting mutant DNA for his experiments and slinking off into the darkness to live to haunt the X-Men another day. Another day is now, as Sinister has been revealed to be the big bad of the revival of X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97.

During Marvel Unlimited’s celebration of X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years, showrunner Beau DeMayo summed up what to expect from the series, which is expected to debut sometime in 2023.

Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all.

It sounds like a rewatch (or a first experience) may be in order for fans who might not remember why Magneto has to step in for Charles (Charles is in space) or why Sinister is so angry. In a response to the tweet embedded above, DeMayo indicated that while the summary is correct, an official and full synopsis will be revealed later in 2023.

  • RUMOR: ‘X-Men ’97’ Eyeing Fall Release, Eyeing 4 Season Run

RUMOR: ‘X-Men ’97’ Eyeing Fall Release, Eyeing 4 Season Run

The Marvel Rumor mill is at it again, as we’re slowly getting some hints at the future of Marvel Studios’ ventures. While they are generally taking a bit of a step back to readjust, we’re still getting some hints at what is heading our way on Disney+ at some point in 2023. Geeks Worldwide’s KC Walsh has just shared that the next live-action series Secret Invasion may be currently eyeing a May release, but that isn’t all.

He also took to his Twitter to announce that they are hoping to release the animated X-Men: The Animated Series revival by the Fall of 2023. Not only that, but he also hints that X-Men ’97 is currently eyeing a four-season run. That is quite an exciting reveal given that there have been rumors we may expect them to also dial down their animated projects as we haven’t heard anything on them since the Season 2 renewals back in 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Of course, his wording means “it’s expected to go” which hints that it’s not a definite renewal for all four seasons. There’s also the chance they may see a lot of potential to run longer, as the animated series wouldn’t be beholden by the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. We still don’t know what exactly their plans are for the animated projects, but it does seem like they are hoping to go all in with these adaptations. Here’s hoping an official announcement isn’t too far off.

  • Wolverine Voice Actor Offers Update on ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2

Wolverine Voice Actor Offers Update on ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2

Marvel Studios has started many different projects since COVID hit, and it has disrupted their usual release schedules. As we’re entering an era where less will release,e we still have no word on what exactly will happen to the various animated projects moving forward like X-Men ’97.

During San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios pretty much renewed most of their animated projects for a second season. That was, however, followed by rumors that they may not be moving forward with them until seeing if their projects even managed to pull in an audience, which is not conducive for any animated project.

Luckily, it seems that at least X-Men ’97 is moving forward even though we still have no update on the first season release. To showcase that it is moving forward, Wolverine voice actor Cal Dodd has taken to his Twitter account to share a little update on what’s been happening with the iconic voice and even sporting some familiar claws.

    https://twitter.com/realcaldodd/status/1626683842881781761

If they are already starting on the second season, Marvel Studios seems quite impressed with the work their team has brought to life. We still are waiting for some kind of trailer or release date but animation takes quite a bit of time to bring to life. So, they might still take some time and are recording in advance while they continue work on the production. These projects are being treated separately from the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe and as such aren’t going to be as affected by the restructuring.

  • RUMOR: Marvel Studios’ Animated Series May Be Facing Troubles

RUMOR: Marvel Studios’ Animated Series May Be Facing Troubles

Marvel Studios has been on a roll as of late. They kicked off Phase 4 with their usual cinematic fanfare but also added some Diseny+ series to the mix. No matter where one stands on the matter, it’s not an easy undertaking, and has expanded Marvel Studios as a result as well. They absorbed Marvel TV and have started a big move in hiring many people to take over the new load. So, this isn’t something they weren’t preparing for in the first place.

Still, it seems that a rumor has been making the rounds in regard to Marvel Studios’ other major project, animation. While What If…? released last year, they have been actively working on various projects with a Marvel Zombies spin-off, a revival of the cult 90s X-Men: The Animated series in X-Men ’97, a Spider-Man series, and who knows what else is in the works. Yet, according to Geeks Worldwide’s KC Walsh, they may be facing some layoffs and are actively waiting for their release to greenlgiht future seasons.

For those that might be wondering if that isn’t the norm, animation takes a long time to develop and any wasted minute means that production will take even longer to keep the momentum up. Commonly they develop a season and are already working on the next when it starts airing. Yet, Marvel Studios may be taking cues from its previous experiences and trying to get a feeling that this project is even worth the investment.

On the one hand, it sucks that animation tends to get shafted first when there’s a need for saving money but there’s also the fact that they could use the time to focus more on their live-action ventures. Animation being treated as its own division may help keep that focus and take away the pressure from the bigger expectation set upon it as part of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse.

Still, this is only a rumor for now and there’s also the fact that during San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios renewed most of their upcoming animated series. We haven’t seen any footage from Spider-Man: Freshman Year but they’ve already renewed it for a second s called Sophomore Year. The same goes for X-Men ’97 and What If…? is even getting a third season. So, we’ll have to see if more information comes to light on why they may be facing these troubles.
