  • ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Wins Best Animated Picture at Golden Globes

‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Wins Best Animated Picture at Golden Globes

The Guillermo del Toro co-directed adaptation of Pinocchio has won Best Picture – Animated at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Del Toro, of course, previously won a Best Director Golden Globe for his work on The Shape of Water in 2018. Other nominees in the Best Animated Picture category included:

    • Inu-Oh
    • Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
    • Puss n’ Boots: The Last Wish
    • Turning Red

This adaptation of Pinocchio comes after Disney had its own version of the classic children’s fantasy novel released this year by director Robert Zemeckis. The Disney+ exclusive film starring Tom Hanks was critically panned and labeled as a poor recreation of Disney’s 1940 animated film.

Meanwhile, the Netflix-exclusive adaptation has been met with widespread acclaim. Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson‘s direction and usage of stop-motion were greatly lauded, as was the notion of tying the film historically to interwar, fascist Italy. It ultimately isn’t much of a surprise to see the film being awarded this Golden Globe.

Pinocchio follows carpenter Gepetto creating a wooden puppet named Pinocchio that magically comes to life through the power of a Wood Sprite. From there, the story tells the tale of the young puppet in his journey to find morals and develop a familial relationship with his pseudo-father, while Gepetto also comes to terms with the puppet being his son.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio stars Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, and Cate Blanchett, among other notable Hollywood stalwarts. The film is currently available to view on Netflix.

  • Angela Bassett Wins Golden Globe Award for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Role

Angela Bassett Wins Golden Globe Award for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Role

Angela Bassett has won a Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture Gloden Globe for her role of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This is her second Golden Globe victory after winning the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It. Other nominees in the category this year included:

    • Kerry Condon in The Banshees of Inisherin
    • Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere All at Once
    • Dolly de Leon in Triangle of Sadness
    • Carey Mulligan in She Said

Ultimately, this is a massive victory for Marvel Studios and Bassett. A victory of this caliber continues to establish the prestige of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the world of Hollywood. Bassett‘s win is the first major acting award achieved for a performance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This victory also continues to highlight the importance of the Black Panther franchise following the original film’s nomination for Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards.

Bassett’s performance in Wakanda Forever revolves around Ramonda’s plight following the death of her son, leading the nation of Wakanda, and maintaining her relationship with her daughter Shuri (played by Letitia Wright). Ramonda’s aim is to help Shuri grieve her brother’s death while also struggling to protect her during dangerous field missions in the United States. Bassett provides a tour-de-force performance in her limited screen time that is worthy of award consideration from the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Marvel Studios provided congratulations to Bassett via Twitter.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is still playing in movie theaters globally. The film will release digitally and on Disney+ on February 1.

‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Series in Development at Sony Pictures Television

The classic Crane Iron Pentalogy novel series will be receiving a television adaptation. Writer-producer Jason Ning is currently developing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon into a television series that is being produced by Sony Pictures Television. This new adaptation will be part of Ning’s newly announced overall deal with Sony Pictures Television.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tiger is the fourth part of the Crane Iron Pentalogy novel series by Chinese author Wang Dulu published between 1938 and 1944. • ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Series in Development at Paramount+

‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Series in Development at Paramount+

Dungeons & Dragons is set to expand further into the world of live-action Hollywood content. Paramount+ has ordered up eight-episodes straight-to-series based on the popular fantasy role-playing game from Hasbro. Rawson Marshall Thurber, the director of Netflix’s most viewed original film Red Notice, has written the script for the pilot episode and is also set to direct the series which will be a co-production between Paramount Pictures and eOne.

Dungeons & Dragons was part of an extensive bidding war from eOne that included various major studios in the television landscape. Ultimately, Paramount came away the victors and will add the gaming stalwart to their library. This acquisition comes after the commercial success Paramount Pictures had with Halo on Paramount+. The move to work with eOne is logical as the two studios are already working together to produce and finance Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a major theatrical release set for March 31 of this year. There is no word on if there’ll be any connections between the feature film and this newly announced series.

It’s been rumored that eOne has had the notion of adapting Dungeons & Dragons into a television series a top priority since acquiring Hasbro in 2019. The newly announced series is to be the largest project the studio has worked on by a significant margin. Assuming the project is successful, there is potential for eOne to expand into creating an expanded universe of multiple projects that interconnect to some degree. It will be interesting to follow if this iteration of Dungeons & Dragons can become one of the next major cinematic franchises in Hollywood.

  • Five Things ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania Needs to Get Right

Five Things ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania Needs to Get Right

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set for its next major shift in the status quo. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania will seemingly be the ultimate resolution for the Ant-Family trilogy, while also marking a starting point for Phase Five and various new plot threads. The film is set to introduce the next Avengers big-bad in Kang the Conqueror as portrayed by Jonathan Majors. As seen through the marketing and the latest trailer, Marvel Studios is making it clear that the Ant-Man franchise is moving away from the strictly light-hearted tone of the first two installments. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has lofty expectations for being a turning point in the Multiverse Saga. With that in mind, here are five elements Marvel Studios’ next film needs to get right in order to be a success.

    Connections to Phase Four

With the conclusion of Phase Four, one major complaint from fans online was the lack of a “connective tissue” between projects. Some have drawn the conclusion that Marvel Studios has no “plan” for the Multiverse Saga; even after they showcased their future plans. This is a ridiculous conclusion to draw with Phase Four mirroring the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with projects being building blocks to introduce characters and concepts that will pay off by the time films like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars hit theaters.

When it comes to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, the film has a golden opportunity to prove the nay-sayers wrong. As the first project of Phase 5, Marvel Studios can quickly change the narrative into that of full anticipation for how each project connects to the conclusion of this saga. This was a key element that made the Infinity Saga such a triumph in the 2010s. If Quantumania can be the film to kickstart that positive momentum for the general direction of the MCU, then it will be that much more strongly received historically speaking.

And based on eagle-eyed viewers of the trailers, this seems to be the case in tying Chronopolis to important artifacts from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel. Here’s hoping that these connections will be overt plot points in the new Ant-Man and The Wasp film.

Lead Into ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

    avengers kang dynasty

While having an eye toward the past is critical to the success of Quantumania, focusing on the future is equally important. The upcoming film is the first introduction to Jonathan Majors‘ Kang the Conqueror; not counting the wildly different variant shown in the Loki season one finale. As such, this film enters the road to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty for him to become the main antagonist of the MCU.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania absolutely needs to get the character right in order for the film to be a worthwhile trilogy ending and for the Multiverse Saga to be worth watching. Audiences should be leaving the film in February with a clear understanding of why Kang is dangerous to whatever permutation of the Avengers he faces in 2026.

And Quantumania being a direct path to The Kang Dynasty goes beyond just the titular character. The film’s exploration of the Quantum Realm would very well benefit from also being an exploration of key plot elements useful for the remainder of the Multiverse Saga. The Ant-Family should be host to pertinent information for the next Avengers film beyond just Kang himself. This certainly is something hard to quantify in the immediate future but would help the long-term perception of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania like previous films in the Infinity Saga.

Set Up William Jackson Harper for More MCU Appearances

This is the most specific element of this list, but one that shouldn’t be overlooked. William Jackson Harper is one of the most underrated actors working in Hollywood today. He was a frequent name on fan castings for Fantastic Four, and his character on The Good Place highlighted how excellent Harper would’ve been as Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With the recent news of the actor being cast in a supporting role for Quantumania, some quickly jumped to the conclusion of Harper being introduced as the new Mister Fantastic through the Quantum Realm. However, this is clearly not the case with casting still well underway for Marvel Studios’ 2025 reboot.

With that in mind, one would hope that Harper will still have a meaningful role both in Quantumania and become a recurring face in the MCU. Rumors have circulated that he could be playing a variety of characters which included Psycho-Man, Quasar, or just a citizen of the Quantum Realm. Ultimately, what’s most important is that he holds genuine relevance to the film. Having an actor as talented as Harper in a supporting role is a massive boon for Marvel Studios, and placing him in a decently important role can easily create a new memorable face for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Setting the Stage for ‘Young Avengers’

While Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a good job setting up the next two phases, one major component that currently feels underdeveloped is the Young Avengers team. A number of key players have been introduced through the previous two years, but a Young Avengers project has curiously remained absent in the tease of the future.

It would be a massive missed opportunity to not make use given their relevance in Kang’s storyline, and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is the perfect place to set the stage for that to happen. Kathryn Newton’s Cassie Lang could instantly become a fan-favorite character by having the events of Quantumania motivate her to form a team of fellow young heroes to help curb the multiversal calamity awaiting. This wouldn’t need to be a time-consuming element of the film to be successful. In fact, a stinger (pun intended) towards the end would be able to satiate audiences and cement a positive reception for the film.

A Strong Conclusion to Ant-Man’s Arc

    antman 3 reshoots

While most of the elements presented for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania are esoteric to the larger MCU, arguably the most important element for the film is successfully rounding out its self-contained trilogy. While the first two films in the franchise aren’t among the most popular, the Ant-Man movies have told a strong unifying story about family and striving to be the best version of one’s self.

Paul Rudd has provided a strong performance to grow Scott Lang into a true hero for both the world at large and his daughter Cassie. Quantumania provides the opportunity to conclude this storyline in a grandiose fashion, regardless of who does or doesn’t return following the events of the film. His time as an Avenger has forced him to lose key amounts of time with his daughter and has been challenged in being present for key parts of her life.

Now while faced with his greatest individual opponent and having to do so side-by-side with his daughter, Peyton Reed has a critical opportunity to tell a profound story about legacy and what a parent passes onto their child. If done correctly, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania can become the next classic interpersonal tale in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite the massive stakes attached to the future of the Multiverse Saga.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has been written by Jeff Loveness and is directed by Peyton Reed. The film stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfieffer, Kathryn Newton, and Jonathan Majors. Quantumania opens exclusively in theaters on February 17.

  • Jemma Redgrave and Aneurin Barnard Join BBC’s ‘Doctor Who’

Jemma Redgrave and Aneurin Barnard Join BBC’s ‘Doctor Who’

The return of Doctor Who has its cast expanding for the upcoming 14th series. Jemma Redgrave and Aneurin Barnard will be joining Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson for the show’s return to BBC and historic debut on Disney+. Redgrave will be returning to her role of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, daughter of classic companion the Brigadier. Her character has been a stalwart of the modern era of Doctor Who, having interacted with the 11th, 12th, and 13th Doctors on multiple occasions. Meanwhile, Barnard has been cast in the role of Roger ap Gwilliam. Not much is known about his role at this time. The actor has previously worked in projects such as Dunkirk and The Goldfinch.

Doctor Who is currently in the process of a soft relaunch that will begin at the end of 2023. This will begin with three specials commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the historic series. They will see David Tennant returning to his iconic role of The Doctor as the 14th incarnation. This comes after the surprising regeneration during Jodie Whittaker’s final episode as the 13th Doctor last year.

Tennant will be reunited with fan-favorite companion Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate. By the end of the three specials, Ncuti Gatwa will be formally introduced as the 15th Doctor in a Christmas Special episode. Following this, Doctor Who will return as a serialized show with eight episodes for the 14th series (which is currently in production).

All of these upcoming specials and episodes are under the supervision of new showrunner Russell T. Davies. He is returning to Doctor Who, after orchestrating the show’s return in 2005 and showrunning the eras of the 9th and 10th Doctor. Overall, it’s a move that makes sense based on reuniting with Tennant and Tate for the 60th Anniversary, and for leading the hopeful relaunch of Doctor Who into the mainstream of the United States. BBC has struck a deal for Disney+ to become the new international distributor (outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland) for the series beginning with the three 2023 specials.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Digital Release Date, Bonus Features Confirmed

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Digital Release Date, Bonus Features Confirmed

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever served as a strong tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman and successfully continued the story of Wakanda on the big screen. Marvel Studios’ most recent theatrical release was also a massive success as a theatrical release in earning over $827 million at the box office. Though now, the film is moving to its next release window with its upcoming arrival to digital platforms and Blu-ray.

February 1 will be the official launch of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on digital platforms. This is the same day as the release of the film on the Disney+ streaming platform. Meanwhile, the physical home media versions of Wakanda Forever will be available on February 7.

In terms of bonus material, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is full of interesting new pieces for fans to dissect. A full-film commentary track done by director Ryan Coogler, writer Joe Robert Cole, and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw will be available. In addition, a gag reel and two featurettes covering the aesthetic design of Wakanda alongside one about the themes of legacy will be included.

Though the main event of the bonus features will be the four deleted scenes. Information about what they entail are below:

Outside The Scope – Okoye has a shocking standoff with Ayo and the Dora Milaje. Aneka makes a challenging decision.

The Upstairs Toilet – Ross infiltrates the NSA in disguise in an attempt to uncover information.

Daughter of the Border – After a conversation with her Uncle, Okoye is faced with a daunting choice.

Anytime, Anywhere – In Haiti, Shuri and Okoye share a bittersweet moment.

These deleted scenes predominately follow further developments for Danai Gurira’s Okoye and her fallout from being removed as leader of the Dora Milaje. It appears these new scenes will likely add deeper context to her character and transition into the role of a Midnight Angel. Ultimately though with the extensive runtime of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in its original cut, it’s logical to see why her arc was more abbreviated in the actual film.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was directed by Ryan Coogler and was written by both Coogler and Joe Robert Cole. The film stars Leitita Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Dominique Throne, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, and Angela Bassett.

  • ‘M3GAN’ Sequel is Already in Development

‘M3GAN’ Sequel is Already in Development

The world of horror movies should be prepared for seeing more of the Model 3 Generative Android. Deadline has shared that a sequel for the new horror film M3GAN is in the very early stages of development. This news makes sense with the surprising surge at the box office the horror film has had on its first full day of release.

The Universal Studios film won at the box office yesterday by earning over $11M, which has moved M3GAN’s opening weekend projection to $27.5M. This respectfully outperforms the initial $20M expectations, and the film has the potential to see it continue to increase if word of mouth continues to be a success.

M3GAN, directed by Gerard Johnstone, is based on a story by Akela Cooper and James Wan. It was produced under Blumhouse Productions and follows the story of roboticist Gemma (played by Alison Williams) as she suddenly finds herself in the custody of her niece Cady (played by Violet McGraw) following the death of the latter’s parents.

To help remedy a struggling home life situation, Gemma provides her niece with a prototype of her new work project to assist in looking after and providing emotional support for Cady: the Model 3 Generative Android (abbreviated to M3GAN). This of course has dire consequences as the artificial intelligence gains sentience that’s combined with a warped and everchanging moral code.

The first major American release of 2023 is a relatively strong underdog story in the film industry. Being the film to dethrone Avatar: The Way of Water as #1 at the box office is a major accomplishment, and the notion of M3GAN being the movie to do it is certainly a surprise. The Way of Water is still set to win the weekend, but M3GAN being able to be relatively competitive without showing in most premium formats is a major feat.

Without getting into specific spoilers from M3GAN, there are threads that can be continued for future projects. The character of M3GAN certainly matches the enigmatic nature shown in the trailer and is rife to be a successful black comedy franchise. Audiences should be prepared to see a great deal more of this artificial intelligence doll in the future.

M3GAN is currently available at movie theaters globally. You can read Murphy’s Multiverse official review of the film here

  • Hugh Jackman Hints at His Wolverine Training and When ‘Deadpool 3’ Starts Production

Hugh Jackman Hints at His Wolverine Training and When ‘Deadpool 3’ Starts Production

One of 2022’s most notable stories in the film industry was the surprise announcement that Hugh Jackman would be returning to the role of Wolverine. The face of the X-Men franchise will be entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the upcoming Deadpool sequel in 2024. As Jackman hasn’t played the character since 2017’s Logan, some might be curious about the time it would take for him to get in enough shape to play the iconic character once again. Luckily in an interview on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, the star actor confirmed the timetable for when he’ll physically be set to play the co-lead for the Marvel Studios production.

I‘ve learned you can’t rush it. I’ve learned that it takes time. So we have six months from when I finish (‘The Music Man’ on Broadway) to when I started filming. And I’m not doing any other work. I’m going to be with my family and train. That’s going to be my job for six months. And I’m really fit right now. There’s one thing that about eight shows a week being on Broadway singing and dancing is I’m fit. So I’m healthy. I have a good place to start. And apologies chickens. Run a mile. Start running now because I’m coming for you.

    Hugh Jackman

The notable news from this quote is that Deadpool 3 is apparently set to begin production in six months following the close of The Music Man on Broadway next week. This would mean a summer start for the highly anticipated multiversal romp. With that in mind, fans looking for the inside scoop on what to expect won’t have to wait too long before the first pieces of information about the film are made public. In terms of Hugh Jackman’s preparedness, the physical condition of the star actor shouldn’t be of any concern when production begins and he dons the metal claws for an additional time.

Tim Blake Nelson Cast in ‘Dune: Part Two’

The all-star cast assembled for the Warner Bros. Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment produced Dune: Part Two has grown even more. Tim Blake Nelson has officially been announced to join the highly anticipated sequel in an undisclosed role. The star actor will be joining the likes of Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, and Christopher Walken as new additions to the franchise. These names will be joining original leads Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardem. Director Denis Villeneuve will be helming the sequel feature film.

Tim Blake Nelson most recently starred in the first episode of the Netflix anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosity. Nelson also worked with the acclaimed director on the critically acclaimed adaptation of Pinocchio from late last year, providing the voice for the Black Rabbit. Nelson is slated to make his long-awaited return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Samuel Stern, aka The Leader, for 2024’s Captain America: New World Order.

Dune: Part 2 will complete the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic 1965 science-fiction novel of the same name, which is the first in a sprawling literary saga. No official word has been on the future of any theatrical sequels following the release of Dune: Part 2 later this year. Villeneuve has expressed interest in adapting Dune Messiah, the second novel of the series, depending on the success of this year’s film. In addition, a prequel spinoff series of Dune: The Sisterhood is currently in production for HBO Max.

Dune: Part 2 is set to release exclusively in theaters on November 3rd of this year.
