    REVIEW: ‘M3GAN’ is the Modern (and Much Improved) ‘Child’s Play’

    M3GAN is this generation’s version of Child’s Play and is a stronger film than the 1988 cult classic horror film. It’s a boldly declarative statement, but the first major American theatrical release of 2023 is a modern black comedy that should be heralded for its innovation in the genre. This movie has the most absurdly humorous moments from the big screen since Everything Everywhere All At Once, while also being a film that plays into resonating and modern themes through a new lens. And to boot, the character of M3GAN is primed to become a cultural icon for the new year and a face of horror for years to come.

    M3GAN, directed by Gerard Johnstone, with the story by Akela Cooper and James Wan, and produced under Blumhouse Productions, follows the story of roboticist Gemma (played by Alison Williams) as she suddenly finds herself in the custody of her niece Cady (played by Violet McGraw) following the death of the latter’s parents. To help remedy a struggling home life situation, Gemma provides her niece with a prototype of her new work project to assist in looking after and providing emotional support for Cady: the Model 3 Generative Android (abbreviated to M3GAN). This of course has dire consequences as the artificial intelligence gains sentience that’s combined with a warped and everchanging moral code.

    Audiences will greatly appreciate how much this film is self-aware of its own absurdity. Following the release of M3GAN‘s first trailer, some expressed curiosity about the genre disparity of a standard horror thriller trailer followed by the iconic dance moves of the sentient doll. In what would feel like an unexpected turn from only viewing this trailer, M3GAN leans significantly harder into its comedic elements. Without getting into spoiler-filled specifics, the movie is rife with more musical moments that should receive solid laughs from audiences. The film’s decision to lean more toward a black comedy was the right call from the creative team. Because of this call, the film was able to use the absurdity of the M3GAN as the basis for a cheeky satirization of the capitalistic banality of corporate attempts to appeal to (and manipulate) impressionable children’s emotions. It’s a concept that certainly wouldn’t have played as well if M3GAN was produced as a straight horror-thriller project. And to be simply put, the more comedic iteration will appeal to a broarder audience that has an appreciation for campy films such as the aforementioned Child’s Play and its contemporaries.

    The horror genre has leaned heavily into the concept of common childhood tokens as ultimate monsters (namely Annabelle and The Boy in recent memory), but M3GAN should be commended for finally moving the trope in a way that will resonate with modern audiences. While the notion of artificial intelligence gaining evil sentience is relatively antiquated in the year 2023, thematically this film is remarkably modern. M3GAN is successful in characterizing how it depicts the themes of new-age absentee parenting through technology and the impact it has on neutering social relationships. It turns McCraw’s Cady into a tragic figure, both from the overt death of her parents and the subconscious devolution into her inner id through technology’s instant gratification. It should be noted that these themes are in no way subtle in how they’re presented or too deeply explored, though that should be expected in a standard popcorn black comedy flick.

    Amie Donald is the film’s MVP for the physical characterization of the M3GAN doll. The young actress, and the training she received from Jed Brophy and Luke Hawker, helped cement the character as an iconic figure in the pantheon of modern horror figures. Donald (with the help of the visual effects departments) helped create a captivating blend of comedic dance numbers and exhilarating chase scenes. With lesser-quality direction and visual effects work, it’d have the potential to be an unmitigated flop that takes audiences out of the movie. Instead, the physical performance of M3GAN successfully leans into the absurdity of the premise while taking itself seriously.

    Though this isn’t the perfect version of this movie by any means. M3GAN is hampered the most when the film tries to play as a basic horror film. The first act relies too heavily on the needless jump-scare attempts that have plagued the 21st century of horror films and nearly sets the expectation that M3GAN will follow this unfortunate trend, though thankfully, rudimentary jump-scares are more sparse as the film progresses. In addition, the writing for Allison Williams’ Gemma struggles to find a consistent identity for her character. She shifts intermittently between the standard horror film protagonist and a woefully ill-prepared figure to raise a child. Gemma is saved through Williams’ on-screen chemistry with Violet McCraw, especially in their final conversations with one another.

    Coming into 2023, it likely wouldn’t be expected that M3GAN would be on many people’s “best movies of the year” list. However, this year’s first major American theatrical release has all the makings of a surprise success in the horror genre and should be a promising sign for the health of theatrical films. Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures have their next major horror franchise in the form of a trendy tween artificial intelligence doll.

    Dwyane Johnson Pitched More ‘Black Adam’ to DC Before the Sequel Was Axed

    DC Studios has entered into the early stages of setting up its cinematic universe for Warner Bros Discovery. This comes after the struggles the film studio has had in the world of superheroes, with Dwyane Johnson’s Black Adam being one of the last films from the old guard. Although the star actor was ambitious in his attempts to create a new hierarchy of the DC Universe for himself, it doesn’t seem everyone was on board. In a new report from Variety, studio insiders discussed the tumultuous making of Black Adam and the character’s corner of the cinematic universe.

    Following the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery, it has been reported from inside sources that Johnson met directly with new CEO David Zaslav to pitch a multi-year expansion for his character of Black Adam to be a cornerstone of DC films. This pitch has been said to have not been met well by others within Warner Bros. Discovery, and was instead viewed as a move to go around a number of other executives at the studio. In his plan, Johnson apparently laid out a plan of films involving Black Adam and Henry Cavill’s Superman interweaving before culminating in a film where the two heavyweights face-off against each other.

    As seen with Black Adam, Johnson was able to secure a return for Henry Cavill as Superman for the post-credit scene. However, this return for Cavill was short-lived with James Gunn and Peter Safran seeking a new direction for the Man of Steel at DC Studios. And Dwayne Johnson has officially met the same fate with his time with DC following the box office flop of Black Adam and the high budgets Johnson generally demands.

    In terms of the potential of a hypothetical Black Adam vs. Superman film or saga, the odds were not positive of it being a successful business plan. The concept of pitting two heroes against each other as the crux of a cinematic universe feels antiquated in today’s blockbuster landscape. Some could also make the viable argument that it’d be too close to Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

    It remains to be seen if the newly founded DC Studios will be able to overcome the challenges that have plagued Warner Bros. Discovery for years at this point. However, the odds are in the favor of James Gunn and Peter Safran to outperform the tumultuous foundation pitched by Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

    RUMOR: J.J. Abrams Might Direct ‘Star Trek 4’

    In the age of major franchises seeing massive expansion in the cinematic landscape, Star Trek has generally been falling behind. The rebooted version of the classic television franchise hasn’t had a feature film since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. Since then, Star Trek has leaned much more heavily into various streaming series on Paramount+ to continue its legacy. 

    There have been attempts to get a new film off the ground for a while, but Paramount has struggled to find a director to stay attached to the project. After various directors had come and gone during early development of Star Trek 4, some ground was thought to have been made with the hiring of Matt Shakman to helm the project. However, his hiring to Fantastic Four in 2022 forced him to relinquish the position and placed Paramount back at square one. However, a new rumor seems to suggest a returning name may be coming back to recalibrate the film series.

    Of course, this very much remains a rumor at this time and shouldn’t be taken as any sort of decision set in stone. However, the potential of J.J. Abrams returning to the director’s chair would be compelling. Abrams was a major name in the creation of this iteration of Star Trek by directing the first two films (Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, respectively). A return from the famous director and producer would procure many questions about where he’d take the franchise. It would also mark J.J. Abrams‘ first foray back into directing following the generally maligned Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

    Another major factor that needs to be considered is the status of a script. It had been announced that Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet were working on a script when Matt Shakman was hired to direct in July 2021, but little has been heard since then. With nothing set in stone, it remains to be seen if a new writer – or writers – are brought on to assist the new director, whether it ends up being Abrams or not.

    ‘The Bad Batch’ Producer Discusses Potential of Omega and Boba Fett Meeting

    As Season 2 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch finally premieres, fans of the franchise eagerly look toward how the events of the show will play into the larger tapestry of Star Wars. One major pathway would likely come in the form of Omega, a rare unique clone that deviated from the specific genetics of Jango Fett. The only other in the same universe is the popular character of Boba Fett. Naturally, this has led to some desire from the audience to see the two characters interact at some point in the animated series.

    However, fans shouldn’t expect to see an interaction between the two happen any time soon. In an interview with the Direct, Bad Batch producer and season two premiere writer Jennifer Corbett spoke about this possibility and why they won’t be capitalizing on it in their show.

    I think a lot of people want that because they are brother and sister but it’s important for her, at this point in her life, and where her journey is – she’s at a very different place than where Boba is right now. So we just really wanted to focus on her growth and her interactions with her found family versus the trajectory that Boba’s currently on. But, you know, never say never.

    This is a logical reason to hold off on any interaction between Omega and Boba Fett. It’s important for both Omega and Star Wars: The Bad Batch to find their own identity without being ensconced into specific lore of the franchise, something that Star Wars has sometimes struggled with in the past. Allowing Omega to grow solely through her relationships with Clone Force 99 will only make her that much of a strong character in the universe. And at that point, the creative forces for the show should only then consider a meeting of the de facto siblings (which is likely too tantalizing to turn down at some point in the timeline).

    The first two episodes of the second season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch are now currently available to watch on Disney+.

    Logan Lerman Discusses Upcoming ‘Percy Jackson’ Disney+ Reboot

    While much discourse around Disney+ content has been built around marquee franchises from Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, one upcoming series has the potential to become a sleeper hit for the streamer. Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on the novels by Rick Riordan, is currently in production in Vancouver and is set to wrap later this month.

    This will be a reboot of the 20th Century Fox two-film series from earlier in the 21st century that sticks closer to the original novels. This series was a launching pad for the career of Logan Lerman as the titular character and he has some words about the upcoming relaunch. While promoting season two of Hunters on Amazon Prime, the actor spoke highly about the new series and specifically Walker Scobell, the actor taking his place as Percy Jackson.

    I don’t think he needs any advice. The kid’s really talented. The only advice I can give him is just to enjoy it while you’re doing it. I think when you’re young, at least when I was younger [playing Percy Jackson], you almost forget to enjoy it as you’re a part of it. I really enjoyed it while I was doing it. Just take each second in and enjoy the newness of what you’re doing and being a part of something like that. That would be the only thing I would tell him. I’d feel like a bit of a schmuck, giving him advice. You’re great. You’re there for a reason. Just do your job.

    Logan Lerman

    It’s certainly great to see Lerman maintain a positive relationship with the role and franchise that played a significant part in his development as an actor. This is despite the two films being a mixed bag both critically and commercially. Logan Lerman also specifically spoke about his confidence in the new series being more of a success across the board.

    I just think this adaptation is going to be great. I think the actors are so good and the creative team is great. Obviously, it’s Rick Riordan. It’s going to be exactly what it should be and I hope the fans like it. I’ll definitely watch it. I’m curious to see what they do with it. I have no doubt that it’s going to be great.

    The notion of Rick Riordan being more involved with the series’ creative process is certainly a promising sign. It was an issue that held back the film adaptations, but the show is looking to avoid these pitfalls and fully adapt the rich tapestry of Riordan’s young adult novels. If the quality of the books can be met, Disney+ can potentially have its version of the Harry Potter franchise in the near future.

    Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently aiming to release its first season in early 2024.

    ‘Solo’ Sequel Not in the Works at Lucasfilm

    As Lucasfilm pushes the Star Wars franchise forward through a plethora of streaming shows on Disney+, more time moves away from the short-lived saga of spin-off films. One of the films from this era, the divisive Solo: A Star Wars Story, has been gaining popularity over time. As such, fans of Star Wars have been somewhat curious about if there is any future for this corner of the universe. Though in a recent interview with director Ron Howard, it has seemingly been confirmed that there are no plans for the film series to move forward.

    The only discussion that I’m aware of about a sequel for ‘Solo’ is coming from the fans at this point. I don’t think it’s a Lucasfilm priority, as I understand it. But there’s some great characters launched, and the folks from Lucasfilm love the fans and really do listen so I would never say never — but I’m not aware of any concrete plans right now to extend the story or deal with that particular set of characters.

    This bit of news shouldn’t come as any surprise. Solo is considered to be the only financial “bomb” within the Star Wars film franchise and critically was not well received either. In addition, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has gone out of her way to talk about how this era of Star Wars was fundamentally flawed. Audiences shouldn’t expect to see Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo any time soon. Though the potential for Donald Glover to return as Lando Calrissian shouldn’t be completely ignored, though that’s a different story within itself.

    George R.R. Martin Discusses Statuses of Future ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Offs

    When it comes to major stories in the television industry in 2022, one of the most notable was the triumphant return of the Game of Thrones franchise. House of the Dragon was a marquee hit for HBO this Autumn and is still part of the conversation as award season approaches. With the fantasy franchise back in the good graces of the public zeitgeist, questions are being asked about what else is in store for the universe. In his latest blog entry, author George R.R. Martin provided some updates on the status of the world of Game of Thrones on HBO.

    Martin confirmed that work on season two of House of the Dragon is well underway, though no further word has been given on when audiences should expect the hit series to return. In terms of other spin-offs of Game of Thrones, this is what the author had to say.

    Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development.   None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon.  A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead.   You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf.  All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.

    It will be interesting to see which of the potential series come to light and which remain in development hell. Of note, fans of the franchise are likely most curious about the status of the Kit Harrington-led series following Jon Snow after the events of the Game of Thrones finale. It would be a series that’d certainly have people talking with it being so tied to the controversial end of the original television series. Though there are still a plethora of other potential projects set within the vast world of Westeros.

    With the success of House of the Dragon, it will be fascinating to follow the amount of output that will come out of the world of Game of Thrones moving forward. And of course, the notion of being under the tumultuous Warner Bros. Discovery company is a major factor in this franchise among others under their umbrella.

    ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Won’t Be a Direct Adaptation of the Dark Frank Miller Arc

    As Marvel Studios moves into Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one of the most anticipated projects comes in the form of Daredevil: Born Again. The Disney+ series will see the return of Charlie Cox into the titular role following his stint as the character on Netflix. While the title of Born Again can lead to the conclusion that the series will be based on the dark and brooding comic series of the same name, Cox has seemingly confirmed that the new series will be taking different inspiration.

    I don’t think anyone should read into the name as to the kind of stories that we’re going to tell.

    Instead of being an adaptation of the specific comic series, the new show’s title appears to be more of an emblematic use of a new era away from Marvel Television’s Netflix regime. The concept of not basing the new series around the seminal Frank Miller comic run is intriguing in the sense that it could lead to a fresh take on Daredevil that isn’t intrinsically tied to darker themes. His guest appearance on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law proved that Cox has the range to portray Matthew Murdock in the more vibrant atmosphere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    Meanwhile, Cox continued to provide elaboration on if the version of Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that of the Netflix series (which has dubious ties to the former’s canon). While the actor himself isn’t 100% on its status, he’s set on playing Matthew Murdock as if it’s the same.

    I don’t think it’s a different character. I just think it’s maybe a different period of his life. I don’t think my interpretation will change — they hired the same actor.

    The Unintentional Gambit of Using Z-Listers to Create Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

    As studios continue in the age of developing cinematic universes, one notable example that remains steeped in mediocrity is Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The studio’s attempt to counter the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t had the most promising start between two commercially passable, yet critically mixed Venom films and the unmitigated flop that was Morbius. Not to be deterred, Sony is still persisting with various other films based on Spider-Man supporting characters. Their choices continue to bring up some major question marks with some of the obscure characters that will be adapted in El Muerto and Hypno-Hustler. It doesn’t immediately put the best foot forward for a logical cinematic universe plan, and it’s certainly very easy to lampoon. However, Sony Pictures may have stumbled upon what could be a genuinely unique and fruitful way to stand out in the world of major franchises.

    Many questions can certainly be asked about the logic of creating a cinematic universe around Marvel characters connected to Spider-Man, while never actually using the titular character in any of the films in that universe. However, scraping the bottom of the barrel allows the chance to essentially create new characters and original intellectual property. It’s a concept that studios should be thrilled to have on their hands and what would actually help push it over the edge into cinematic success would be allowing the creative teams of these projects to get truly experimental with them by being visually and narratively distinct from most superheroic-fare. Letting Bad Bunny dive deep into the world of professional wrestling for the role of El Muerto has the potential to be an audience draw for Sony Pictures. And more importantly, letting Donald Glover star in a feature-length film about a deranged club musician could bring out the strong artistic quality found in the tracks and music videos of Childish Gambino. That could truly turn Hypno-Hustler into a household name and a critically successful film.

    Some may scoff at the idea of Hypno-Hustler and El Muerto having any potential of being “household names” but for casual audiences, there’s no real difference in awareness of comic characters beyond the upper class of characters. The general knowledge for the characters mentioned above from the common film attendee is essentially equal to that of the Guardians of the Galaxy before 2014 and while of course the success of James Gunn’s film was built around his strong craftsmanship, the SSU could potentially find some level of benefits with unfettered work from good filmmakers. As an additional plus, the usage of Z-list comic characters will allow the filmmakers to take whatever creative liberties they’d need to as they’re not beholden to any sanctity of lore.

    While there are potential positives from using these obscure villains, there are equally strong reasons to avoid the current strategy of using more recognizable Spider-Man villains in solo outings. If the SSU remains insistent on not using an interpretation of the Wall-Crawler in their films, then it’s a waste of resources to use characters intrinsically tied to him. Audiences don’t have any tangible reason to watch a film about a villain without their main rival present. The first two Venom films have barely been able to pass as successful films thanks to the individual cache the character has had from 1990s nostalgia. Meanwhile, a character like Morbius that holds none of that cache led Sony Pictures to one of the most major flops in the superhero genre in a good long while. 

    With that in mind, Kraven the Hunter has all the earmarks to be a flop based on these metrics. Making the villain a seemingly pure protagonist has the potential to remove any of the interesting elements of the character (something that wouldn’t need to be worried about with obscure villains with no love lost). It’s obvious that Kraven would have been much better served being used as a villain for a Tom Holland-led, Marvel Studios co-produced Spider-Man film. These types of more recognizable villains would be much better served in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (aka Sony Pictures actual cash cow in terms of Spider-Man films).

    If the SSU does go in the direction of building around these untapped characters, they cannot take half measures in creative decision-making. The studio must fully embrace these types of weird characters and provide the filmmakers with the trust for them to maximize their potential. This sounds strongly rudimentary for the process of filmmaking, but they need to actually have a strong story concept that can be built upon by your main creative team. The notion of simply matching a random celebrity to a Z-list character obviously does not make a successful film. There’s interesting potential in films such as El Muerto and Hypno-Hustler, but if the only idea there is the surface-level pitch, then Sony Pictures are in for a continued world of hurt.

    Sony Pictures does have a dark horse chance to turn their odds and ends into something truly distinct in the superhero cinematic landscape. Of course, it seems likely that this was a plan created without much forethought going in and it will be an uphill battle for it to actually work. This strategy will have to involve Sony trusting its filmmakers to independently create unique projects, something that the studio has struggled to do in most of its live-action projects based around Spider-Man. Speaking of the titular character, an attempt to create this sort of universe could’ve been more successful if Sony chose to adapt essentially any of the pantheon of Spider-people that are set to appear in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Ultimately, this whole conversation could be a moot point in the potentially probable event that all these films are shuttered following another financial and critical flop from the studio.

    REPORT: Gal Gadot Joins Jason Momoa for Major Franchise Sequel

    In what is coming as a fairly surprising twist for the Fast & Furious franchise, star actress Gal Gadot is reportedly returning for the upcoming tenth installment, Fast X. She will be reuniting with the likes of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson as they face off against Gadot’s former DC co-star in Jason Momoa

    Of course, the major surprise comes from the fact that her character of Gisele Yashar was killed off during Fast & Furious 6. Granted, this hasn’t stopped Sung Kang from returning in Fast 9, the most recent film, following his character of Han Lue being killed previously.

    Continuity aside, it would make sense to see Gal Gadot return to this major franchise at this point in her career. Within the past month, her marquee role of Wonder Woman was put into question following the cancellation of the third film in the franchise. It has recently been reported that the new team of DC Studios have nixed the pitched Wonder Woman 3 by filmmaker Patty Jenkins. This, plus the report that Gadot’s cameo in The Flash was cut could lead to the idea that the actress will be another casualty of the corporate overturn occurring.

    Fast X is being directed by Louis Leterrier and Gadot will star the likes of Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Brie Larson, Jason Mamoa, and Charlize Theron among others in the all-star ensemble. The film is scheduled to release exclusively in theaters on May 19, 2023.
