In 2023, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet seemingly teased plans for her to reprise her role as Daisy Johnson, aka Quake, in an MCU project. At the time, with Secret Invasion having yet to stream, her legions of stans believed wholeheartedly that would be the project in which Bennet would appear despite denials from the actress about her involvement with the show. Needless to say, Quake did not appear in the series, which stands as one of Marvel Studios’ worst projects to date. Now, we know what kept Bennet from appearing.
During an appearance at Dragon Con, Bennet explained that she was not in Secret Invasion because she was not offered a role because Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is “not really considered canon.”
“I’m not playing a bit. This isn’t a joke. I don’t know anything; they haven’t asked me,” replied Bennet when asked about Quake showing up in the MCU. “If they would, you know me, I can’t keep a secret, I would tell you guys. We are not really considered canon. I think the show will make some weird, random comeback. Like if it gets put on another streamer or something.“
Before finishing up her response, however, the actress took a shot at the Marvel produced show, saying, “But as of now, no, and I agree that I could have been in ‘Secret Invasion,’ but I wasn’t. Probably would have been better.”
The canonicity of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been the subject of debate for years. In recent years, multiple Marvel Studios projects seemed to decanonize the ABC melodrama. In 2024, Bennet‘s co-star, Ming-Na Wen, talked about how the show had become a “separate entity” but with and even Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum refusing to address the issue head on, the debate has continued. However, with someone like Bennet, who massive and rabid fan base, admitting the series is not MCU canon, it may well be the end of the argument.
