Ahead of the start of principal photography on DC Studios’ Clayface, Liverpool, England is being transformed into the DCU’s Gotham, giving fans their first look at Batman’s home turf…and the villains that are active within its limits.
Based on a photo of the in-universe Gotham Herald and another publication, small-time Batman crook Jimmy “Red” McCoy will play a role in the film, though insider @ApocHorseman believes another crime boss will be the film’s big bad.
And thanks to additional photos of the Liverpool set, we have some hints about who that big bad might be. While there’s a reference to “The Jokers”, there’s also some graffiti with a letter blacked out that reads “armine.” Simple deductive logic suggests that the missing letter is a “C” and that would mean Carmine Falcone could be referenced here. Given the importance of the character in Matt Reeves‘ The Batman, it seems unlikely he’d be the big bad in a DCU film; however, the graffiti could be intended to show the mob boss has been scrubbed out in this universe’s Gotham, leaving the underworld open for business.
There’s also plenty of speculation that the Gotham Herald provides the first look at Tom Rhys Harries‘ Matt Hagen, aka Clayface, though the low-quality picture makes it hard to tell. Whatever the case, these set photos provide the first look at Gotham as it will be portrayed in the all-new, all-different DCU…and now we wait for the DCU’s Dark Knight.
