Danny McBride Locked and Loaded for Directorial Debut with Paramoun’s ‘G.I. Joe’ Reboot

Paramount Pictures isn’t just letting Danny McBride script their next flagship action franchise—they are officially handing him full creative control. According The Hollywood Reporter, McBride will officially direct the upcoming live-action G.I. Joe reboot.

The high-stakes military actioner, which McBride co-wrote alongside his trusted The Righteous Gemstones and Vice Principals collaborators Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri, will mark the McBride‘s feature-length film directorial debut.

The hmupdate lands as the studio, operating under the fresh Paramount-Skydance regime led by David Ellison, prioritizes G.I. Joe as an absolute crown-jewel asset to be fast-tracked ahead of other tentpole projects.

While casual filmgoers might find the choice of a premier comedy vanguard to helm a major sci-fi blockbuster baffling, insiders emphasize that McBride’s connection to the IP is incredibly deep and entirely earnest.

It was definitely the cartoons and the comics. G.I. Joe was my thing when I was a kid,” McBride recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I liked that more than Star Wars, more than anything. I loved G.I. Joe. I still have all the characters.

The hire is a direct reflection of push from newly minted Paramount chief Ellison. Under Skydance’s guiding hand, the studio is actively treating G.I. Joe as a top priority. Production is expected to kick off in 2027.

With the script completed and McBride officially in the director’s chair, the production is now moving aggressively to lock down its cast, with Bradley Cooper is actively being eyed to replace Chris Hemsworth as Duke.
