Axel Foley is back as the upcoming legacy sequel heading to Netflix has finally started getting some steam. Deadline has just revealed that Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined returning Eddie Murphy in the upcoming film. Production is already underway with Mark Molloy in the director’s chair. As one would expect, Murphy will once again play Axel Foley, who is also taking on a producing role alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman.
The film also got a new title, as it’ll be known as Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. It’s unclear what direction they are going with this sequel which will revisit one of the early comedy cinematic icons first introduced back in 1984. The franchise went on to consist of three films. There’s no word yet if other actors might be reprising their roles from previous films. It’s also unclear which role Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will have in the upcoming sequel.
The title is certainly curious as it almost feels like they are chasing something that Top Gun: Maverick put out there with its title. Of course, it’s unclear if this new title is potentially meant as a tribute to the franchise’s new direction as a last hurrah for the character. Perhaps they also hope to pass on the torch to a new generation but it’s unclear just what their goal is with the sequel. We’ll have to see once the first trailer arrives.
It’s crazy to think how far the Mafia franchise has come. The Czech gaming franchise has made quite the splash internationally with a variety of entries and spinoffs, even as Hangar 13 took over and it started being published by 2K Games. The original studio of Illusion Softworks even changed its title to 2K Czech over the years, but the fundamentals still remain with the game exploring a Great Depression setting to this day.
The game originally started with Mafia back in 2002 before it spawned two sequels. In 2020, they released a “Definite Edition” of the original after Hangar 13 took over production of the third entry. The game even got two spinoffs, but it looks like a new numbered sequel is potentially making a return as revealed by Art Director of Mafia 2 who would go on to become Studio head General Manager, Roman Hladík. In an interview as part of the 20th anniversary, he revealed an all-new game is in development.
I’m happy to confirm we’ve started work on an all-new Mafia project! While it’s a few years away and we can’t share anything more right now, we’re really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories.
Roman Hladík
As the game is still in early development, it seems we’ll have to wait a little longer until we get any further details. It’ll be interesting to see fit this is an official fourth entry or perhaps a new game altogether that focuses on establishing a new spinoff to give the franchise a fresh start as it’s been quite some time since the third entry was released.
It’s the moment every Knives Out fan has been waiting for. After an auspiciously long wait, Empire Magazine has finally revealed the identities of the sequel’s many characters. The star-studded project has been the subject of much speculation since the full cast began to become public over the last couple years. Now, audiences will be able to put fictional names to all the very real faces occupying Rian Johnson‘s next Benoit Blanc mystery. Of course, Daniel Craig will be back as the now-iconic Southern detective who has become the centerpiece of the Knives Out franchise. As for the rest, that’s where things get a little more unfamiliar.
Titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the second Blanc adventure concerns a group of old acquaintances who are summoned to Greece by a rich mutual friend for a murder-mystery game that becomes a little too real. Starring in the film will be Kathryn Hahn, who is set to portray Governor Claire Debella, a Connecticut politician who is now running for the Senate. According to director Johnson, she “pisses everyone off, and is trying to thread the needle in many different ways, in terms of her public persona and what she’s willing to compromise in order to stay in office“. Next is Kate Hudson as Birdie Jay, a fashionista, and Iron Fiststar Jessica Henwick as Peg, her assistant. Not much else was said about this duo, but it’s safe to assume the talent involved in their dynamic will be a joy to watch.
Edward Norton is set to play Miles Bron, a billionaire tech disruptor. Johnson spoke about Bron candidly, saying “the species that [Miles] is derived from will be instantly recognizable to a lot of people in our era of tech billionaires“. Leslie Odom Jr. will bring to life Lionel Toussaint, a scientist who works for Bron. As for Dave Bautista, he’ll play against type as a popular YouTuber named Duke Cody, while Madelyn Cline portrays Whiskey, his girlfriend and assistant. Finally, Janelle Monáe will be seen as Cassandra ‘Andi’ Brand, a tech entrepreneur.
Ethan Hawke is confirmed to have a role in the film, though his character is the only one that remains unknown to viewers. It’s possible that Hawke is the rich mutual friend who brings everyone else together in the first place, or the one that bites it early in the plot, but that remains to be seen. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will stream exclusively on Netflix starting December 23rd.
Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have signed on to star in the science fiction film, Ash. The movie hails from filmmaker Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, and writer Jonni Remmler. Flying Lotus, who is also a musician, is set to also compose the score for the film.
Ash tells the story of a woman, played by Thompson, who wakes up on a distant planet and goes on to find the rest of her crew at the space station murdered. She’ll soon have to discover whether or not she can trust the man (Gordon-Levitt) sent to rescue her. While trying to get to safety, the duo will try to investigate the killings, leading them to question the innocence of Thompson’s character.
The film is being produced by XYZ Films and GFC Films, with Echo Lake and director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) on board as executive producers. XYZ Films will finance the film and is currently handling worldwide sales for Ash, kicking off with “pre-sales” at Toronto International Film Festival in September.
While Flying Lotus is primarily known for his music, this will actually mark his third film. His debut film, Kuso, premiered at Sundance in 2017. He also directed a piece for the horror title V/H/S/99, described as a horror omnibus, which will premiere as part of this year’s TIFF Midnight section.
Production on Ashwill kick off in New Zealand next year.
House of the Dragon is back for another round of violent mayhem and questionable decision making! The series’ second episode, titled The Rogue Prince, was all about succession and the disdain that comes with being rebuffed. In fact, it was so much about succession, it might as well be called Succession With Dragons, because it feels an awful lot like Succession, but with very cool dragons instead of Brian Cox. Anyway, the episode continues the show’s strong start with a heavily political outing – replacing last week’s jousting duels with a series of Small Court shouting matches. Everyone either wants King Viserys to marry their kid, or name them the direct heir to the Iron Throne. Events play out as chaotically as one might expect. Let’s get into it.
The Best – The Women of King’s Landing
There was a lot to love in The Rogue Prince. When it comes to the very best part of the episode, however, it becomes a little harder to narrow things down. The obvious resolution to this would be the moment Milly Alcock‘s Princess Rhaenyra came swooping through the clouds to put a stop to unnecessary bloodshed and reclaim what was hers. Yet, the true answer is actually a bit finer and lies deep within that very sequence of events. Throughout this entire episode, the women of King’s Landing absolutely run circles around their male counterparts.
Rhaenyra and her best friend, Emily Carey‘s Alicent Hightower, are the heart and soul of this entry. This may turn out to be true of the series as a whole, but it’s especially on display here. The moments they are on screen are consistently the most interesting of the episode. Alcock and Carey‘s characters also mirror each other perfectly, as both are forced to confront their unknown futures via awkward conversations with their respective fathers. There’s a moment specifically early on when Alicent seems to realize she may one day wed Viserys, and the look of quiet disturbance that crosses her face puts every other performance in The Rogue Prince to shame. An honorable mention must also go to Eve Best‘s Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, who finally gets some chewable dialogue in a pivotal scene with her cousin’s daughter.
The Worst – King Viserys’ Wife Sweepstakes
Similar to last week, this episode’s worst moment is less of a storytelling critique and more of an uncomfortable, cringe-filled sigh. Now six months after the death of his wife and newborn son, King Viserys is pressured to select a new bride. It matters not if the man is still grieving, as the kingdom and his family’s reign must continue to persevere. Only, there’s one massive problem. As is customary in the culture presented in the Game of Thrones franchise, all of Viserys’ potential suitors are either literal children or very young women who don’t want to be involved – and honestly, it’s really gross. Yes, this is part of the show, but that doesn’t mean it’s enjoyable to watch a grown man flirt with a girl who is, at most, a few years older than his teenage daughter.
Ultimately, Viserys chooses Alicent as his future bride. This is weird because, again, she is basically a teenager and very close with his own child. However, the episode makes it seem like the more noble choice by setting up the King’s decision with a truly terrible conversation. Before he decides on Alicent, his Grace must consider the pros of wedding Rhaenys and Lord Corlys’ 12-year-old daughter instead. This culminates in a shockingly uncomfortable scene where Viserys essentially goes on a date with the aforementioned Lady Laena, who tells him her mother said she “won’t have to bed him until she’s 14.” It’s something worth gagging over. Luckily, this is as far as that relationship goes, but it doesn’t make the fact Alicent will likely have to birth her friend’s half-brother much of an easier pill to swallow.
Welcome to your Monday edition of The Morning After Huddle. This weekend was incredibly tough for the NFL.
Here’s what you need to know:
First up, it is with an extremely heavy heart that we share Jason Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Communications and Community Affairs for the Miami Dolphins, has passed away at 47. According to multiple reports, Jenkins died unexpectedly over the weekend. A fixture in the community, he joined the Dolphins organization in 2009 after spending time with the 49ers. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
Next, the heavy news continues with the Washington Commanders. Running Back Brian Robinson is recovering this morning after being shot several times in the lower extremities during a robbery attempt. Commanders Head Coach Ron Rivera says Robinson is in good spirits after visiting him in the hospital. Sending best wishes to Robinson and a fruitful career. The Running Back is a third-round pick from this year’s NFL Draft.
Update: Devin Faraci has taken to Twitter to clarify that he has no inside information on this rumor, which is still a rumor, just one with even less to hold onto than before.
Fantastic Four, which was formally confirmed to launch Phase 6 during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con presentation, has been a topic of discussion among fans more frequently than almost any other MCU film in recent months. With WandaVision filmmaker Matt Shakman reportedly in talks to helm the film, the biggest question remaining is who will be cast as the First Family of Marvel.
Only a few months ago, John Krasinski brought a Marvel Cinematic Universe Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, to life in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, it appears more and more unlikely that he will come back to play the Earth-616 version of Mr. Fantastic in the MCU’s first Fantastic Four solo film after providing quite a lot of fan service with his Doctor Strange role.
On the Marvelvision Podcast, former “Birth. Movies. Death.” editor-in-chief Devin Faraci reported that Marvel Studios had spoken with You star Penn Badgley about playing Reed Richards in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. Faraci had hopes for a Black actor to play Mr. Fantastic, but stated that Marvel Studios was likely going to be “very traditional” instead:
The guys that [Marvel Studios] been talking to about it are all white guys. That guy [Penn Badgley] from the show You, who probably has the role already, frankly, he’s a white guy. They’re going with the standard… And he’s terrific, by the way, that’s a good choice. But, they’re going very classical.
Devin Faraci
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously stated that the hunt for the ideal stars will be long and that the crew would look for “the best actor for the position(s)” in Fantastic Four, regardless of popularity. While this is currently just a rumor, an official announcement of the film’s cast could come as early as Marvel Studios’ presentation at Disney’s D23 Expo on September 10, 2022.
Fantastic Four will make its theatrical debut on November 8, 2024.
There are quite a few franchises that manage to stay relevant decades later. This year alone, many iconic franchises from across the world are celebrating their anniversaries, be it Persona, Final Fantasy, One Piece, and more. Yet, there’s one other big franchise that is getting ready for a massive shake-up as it hits its next milestone. Power Rangers is about to enter its 30th season soon and while the Netflix series is still in development, Hasbro has not forgotten the franchise that put it on the map. As such, they have revealed that the 30th season is in development and they are mixing things up.
Unlike previous entries, the Power Rangers teams would get replaced after two seasons. Now, they have decided to keep the Dino Fury team together as they’ll return for a third season, which is now titled Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury. It marks the first time a team has remained for more than two seasons since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Simon Bennett is also set to return as executive producer.
Happy #PowerRangersDay, #RangerNation! We’re proud to announce that #PowerRangers: Cosmic Fury will begin filming this fall & debut in ‘23 with Simon Bennett returning as EP! For the 1st time since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the current cast will be returning for a 3rd season! pic.twitter.com/c1ZAaTYJ8H
It’s definitely great to see them give the team another go and who knows if it’ll end with a third season if they are following the original trajectory of the Mighty Morphin era. Perhaps this season acts as a tribute to the many storylines that came before, especially if they are including the wording “cosmic” in the name, perhaps we’ll get some Power Rangers In Space callbacks throughout or any other cosmic. Whatever they may include, it’s going to be exciting to see how it comes together.
Futurama is back, baby! Well, at least again as Hulu has given the series another season exclusive for the streaming service. The former Fox series went through quite some growing pains when the voice of Bender, John DiMaggio, didn’t sign on yet to return but luckily things ended up working out contractually. So, the entire cast is set to reprise their iconic roles once again in the returning series.
While we haven’t gotten many details on how they’ll approach the new season, especially with how the last season wrapped up, Hulu has shared the official episode titles. ScreenRant was able to share them with us and offered a little insight into what stories we might expect in the Hulu continuation.
Check out the list of episodes right here:
“The Impossible Stream,”
“Rage Against The Vaccine,”
“Zapp Gets Cancelled,”
“The Prince And The Product,”
“Related To Items You’ve Viewed,”
“Children Of A Lesser Bog,”
“How The West Was 1010001,”
“I Know What You Did Last Xmas,”
“Parasites Regained,”
“All The Way Down.”
The titles definitely tease the usual self-referential nature of the project. “The Impossible Stream” definitely sounds like they’ll play on the fact that the series returned through a streaming service while “Rage Against the Vaccine” will definitely talk about current issues that are raging. Zapp Brannigan’s episode also sounds quite timely and it’ll be interesting to revisit the character with a more updated perspective. It’ll definitely be fun to see what the team has cooked up for us.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will see the return of multiple stars to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Daniel Kaluuya will not be one of them. The actor, fresh off an acclaimed turn in Jordan Peele’s Nope, was shockingly absent when the cast of the sequel film took the stage at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con. He portrayed W’Kabi, a close friend of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa and a morally conflicted member of Wakanda’s advisory board in 2018’s Black Panther. However, the Get Out breakout doesn’t seem to mind being absent from the highly anticipated second entry of the franchise. Instead, he says he’ll be excitedly rooting for his friends from the sideline.
Speaking exclusively with Variety in a recent interview, Kaluuya was asked if he’d gotten around to watching the gorgeous trailer for Wakanda Forever released at SDCC. He responded cheerfully:
Of course, I’ve seen it! It’s amazing.
Daniel Kaluuya
When pressed to comment on not having a role, Kaluuya gave another respectful and succinct answer:
It’s what’s best for the story, what’s best for the film. I’m excited for it. I’m excited to watch it.
Daniel Kaluuya
W’Kabi played a big part in the political landscape of the first film, so it will be interesting to see how the sequel is better off without him. Perhaps Kaluuya’s character is away from the country when Tenoch Huerta’s Namor attacks, or perhaps he’s an early, off-screen casualty that helps propel the Black Panther story forward. Only time will tell. As for his future with Marvel, Kaluuya was forced to keep playing coy:
You know I can’t tell you! You’re supposed to start with that!
Daniel Kaluuya
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters on November 11th.
