  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ Iman Vellani Tried to Sneak in a Lockjaw Easter Egg

‘Ms. Marvel’ Iman Vellani Tried to Sneak in a Lockjaw Easter Egg

The reviews have finally arrived for Ms. Marvel (of which you can find ours by clicking here) and it looks like many are excited about the young Pakistani-American superhero’s journey into live-action. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Iman Vellani who takes on the role of Kamala Khan talked about how she tried to sneak in an Easter egg to the Inhuman dog, Lockjaw.

I’ve been trying to get a Lockjaw Easter egg and it did not happen. But Season 2, if there’s a Season 2.

    Iman Vellani

So, it sadly looks like Lockjaw won’t be appearing in the first season in any capacity, as many believed that the show might skip the Inhuman aspect altogether. Still, the giant puppy has played an important role in Kamala Khan’s story and it would be a shame to not explore their relationship. It’s great to see that Vellani personifies her character as much as she does.

We did recently get the return of Anson Mount as Black Bolt, but he is part of the multiverse. Lockjaw made his live-action appearance in the infamous Inhumans series. We still don’t know if that aspect of her origin makes it into the series, as they could be playing the long con with their introduction especially as the Mutants are also making their way into the franchise.

  • REVIEW: ‘Ms. Marvel’ is The Best Marvel Origin Story Since ‘Spider-Man’

REVIEW: ‘Ms. Marvel’ is The Best Marvel Origin Story Since ‘Spider-Man’

No Marvel origin story has captured the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of Peter Parker’s origin like 2014’s Ms. Marvel. Much like Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, G. Willow Wilson and Sana Amanat succinctly keyed into the cultural and social crossroads of the time – minus the Randian objectivism – and through Kamala Khan’s journey of self-discovery and angst, created one of the most important stories Marvel has ever published. So it comes as no surprise that, like the comic, no live-action Marvel origin story captures the same Spider-Man magic as Ms. Marvel

Writer Bisha K. Ali does the thankless feat of transposing Kamala’s origin on the page to an origin fit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s slate of the upcoming films, with the biggest change being the source of her powers. Kamala goes from being an Inhuman, a race of aliens damned by Marvel Studios, to an average teen with a magical weapon. It’s a change that’s yielded much derision from comic loyalists and applause from more apologetic fans. Yet in spite of such a massive change, audiences will be pleased to see how the rest of the Kamala Khan magic remains intact. In spite of all the worldbuilding and slate building mandates, Ali keys precisely into the heart of the comic.  And this is what ultimately makes Ms. Marvel Kevin Feige‘s nth consecutive winner: the family, friendships, and the hardships on full display.

Through a charming supporting cast and a transcendent lead in Iman Vellani, Kamala’s life unfolds in earnest ways. Her parents Muneeba and Yusuf, played by Zenobia Shroff and Yohan Kapur respectively, are Amblin-esque in the way they raise their children. They’re stern but never callous; wary of the cultures of the West but aren’t out of touch. There’s a perpetual warmth to their words even as they scold Kamala for screwing up. In a cinematic universe where awful parental figures are baked into its DNA, the Khans loom large.

The same can be said for Kamala’s best friends Bruno and Nakia, who give Ned Leeds and MJ a run for their money as the quintessential buddies in the MCU. Bruno and Nakia serve as sturdy support systems for Kamala, both practically and emotionally. Bruno is her guy-in-the-chair; a tech wunderkind with a foundational knowledge of all things superhero. Matt Lintz plays him with an exciting eagerness that doesn’t feel like a rehash of Ned Leeds. His concern for Kamala borders on the romantic and is treated by the writing with such profound maturity. Even though his longing for Kamala is brushed aside by her own interests, he’s never bogged down by bitterness and goes far as to be a close friend to the Khans.

Whereas Bruno is Kamala’s connection to her superhero business, Nakia is Kamala’s connection to her community. Part of Kamala’s inner conflict over her identity and duty is examined in her moments with Nakia, who is more faithful to the community Kamala finds herself always rebelling against. And like Bruno, the writing treats this contrast with dignity and understanding that their differences never come across as antagonistic. Nakia is sharply defined by the sincere idealism and determination evoked by Yasmeen Fletcher. Her arc seems minute compared to Kamala and Bruno’s superhero adventures but nonetheless feels meaningful thanks to Fletcher’s performance.

All the wholesomeness and positivity emanated by the strong cast of characters coalesces into the vibrant ball of energy that is Kamala Khan, played by a rapturous Vellani, whose puppy-dog eyes instantly captures the upbeat, wide-eyed naivete of Kamala in the comics. The cadence Vellani brings to each moment is so infectious that the show sees itself morph stylistically around her. Much of Kamala’s perspectives are contextualized visually by the striking cinematography and editing. Scenes whip pan into one another, mirroring Kamala’s quick wit and frantic enthusiasm for the world around her. The show’s diegesis is constantly disrupted by Kamala’s musings that bring life to her superhero sketches onscreen. These quirky, animated sketches give the show a comic-like two-dimensional flair. Even Vellani’s musical tastes bleed into the show as composer Laura Karpman‘s bubblegum electropop soundscapes permeate each scene. Vellani’s performance is so deeply indisputable that this version of the show would not exist without her.

Whether it’s intentional or not, Ms. Marvel is rife with sentimentality. Sentimentality over the MCU’s own mythology and for heroism that’s hopeful and optimistic. The big Captain Marvel question is lampshaded at the very beginning but it’s an unconvincing attempt to bridge Carol Danvers’ glaring lack of Earth adventures with Kamala as an heir to the mantle. While The Marvels is obviously slated to resolve that issue, its impact, or lack thereof, on Ms. Marvel is faint at best. Kamala’s impetus to be heroic is better contextualized through the legacy of the Avengers and all the superheroes of the MCU as a whole rather than Carol herself. Nonetheless, it’s through this legacy that new heroes are created and the show examines that purposefully.

In the wake of Moon Knight and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the lack of grit and cynicism in this show feels deliberate. Ms. Marvel is ultimately a story of identity and finding hope in that identity. Even as Kamala’s teen angst begins to intersect with the grim ramifications of superheroism, the optimism in the writing never runs dry. The end result is a deeply feel-good coming-of-age tale that, in many ways, serves as the quintessential Silver Age origin story of the MCU.

  • ‘One Piece’ Going on Brief Hiatus as Eiichiro Oda Plans to Prepare the Final Saga

‘One Piece’ Going on Brief Hiatus as Eiichiro Oda Plans to Prepare the Final Saga

It’s insane to think that mangaka Eiichiro Oda has been working on One Piece for over 25 years. And, throughout that time he hasn’t taken many breaks as the series follows the Weekly Shonen Jump release format, even if he takes some breaks now and then. As he’s wrapping up work on what may be the biggest saga he’s ever told with Wano, Oda has officially announced that it’s going on a month’s hiatus from Jump’s Issue #30 to #33. He shared the message on Twitter, which was translated by @WSJ_manga.

He jokingly shared a message in regards to his upcoming hiatus, where he highlights that he is trying to reorganize himself before tackling the final arc for the manga. Now, while he does say he wants to finish it as soon as possible, it doesn’t mean the next arc may take as long as Wano did, if not longer. Still, it’s great that he’s taking a break, especially as he also plans to travel to South Africa and visit the set of the live-action One Piece series. It seems his original trip was ruined due to COVID and he is finally using the chance.

One Piece is about to hit another renaissance with a new game on the horizon, the latest film RED and a live-action adaptation. The manga about to enter its final stages is also something that’s hard to believe considering how long it’s been going. It also turns out that Oda hasn’t had a break like this since the initial time skip, which was all the way back in 2010. So, it’s a well-deserved rest as we still have a few more chapters before then, as Wano’s curtains come to a close.

  • Breaking Down Netflix Geeked Week’s ‘One Piece’ First Look Showcase

Breaking Down Netflix Geeked Week’s ‘One Piece’ First Look Showcase

It feels like forever since the live-action adaptation of One Piece was first announced. To be fair, it was back in 2017 and after a long wait, alongside a pandemic, the production finally started when we entered 2022. While it seems we’re still some time away from actual footage from the show, Geeked Week gave us a first look at the One Piece set, as well as some additional castings. So, let’s take a closer look at what was revealed during the brief but great showcase of what showrunners Steve Maeda and Matt Owens are working on.

    Miss Love Duck

The showcase started off with a look at some amazing detailed concept art. It included our first official look at Alvida’s iconic ship, the Love Duck. We sadly don’t get a good look at its captain, but Ilia Isorelýs Paulino is confirmed to play the ruthless leader of the Alvida Pirates. We don’t know exactly where they are going, but we theorized that they may be taking a cue from the anime, which kicked off Monkey D. Luffy’s (Iñaki Godoy) adventure on the ship, where his fateful meeting with Koby (Morgan Davies) puts them both on separate adventures towards the Grand Line. The little tease of how they brought the boat to life is also a great showcase of the details such as even its munition having her heart on it.

    Going Merry

The Going Merry is the Straw Hats’ iconic ship that they sail into the Grand Line. It’s no wonder they would showcase the ship that would pull through every possible danger thrown at it; including Luffy. The ship is taking quite a different approach in its design, as the goat head is way more defined and stepped in more realism. While it’s hard to not think of the iconic simple design from the manga, it’s great to see Merry actually being merry, as what we thought from leaked set photos was her screaming but is actually just her smiling.

If you look closely, you can actually see our first tease of Luffy’s live-action design with the open red shirt. What stands out is that from the angle the character is drawn, it seems he is wearing jeans rather than his usual shorts, but it may just be something used in earlier designs. It should also be noted that the iconic Straw Hat symbol got a makeover that still feels true to that of the original from the manga, just less rounded. The real-life boat showcased seemingly wasn’t quite finished, as the eyes aren’t colored in.

    Baratie

Now, here’s the juicy part of the showcase, we get a good look at how they are adapting Chef Zeff’s iconic ship. Not only did they reveal that Craig Fairbrass is playing the owner and mentor of Sanji (Taz Skylar) but also showcased how they recreated the entire restaurant. The concept art showcases a few of the details such as the mouth no longer being a detachable boat but rather a unique bar area. It’s interesting that the concept art seemingly highlights a night shot, which could be a tease for when some of the Baratie Arc takes place.

There’s one big difference that does stand out. The Baratie is no longer a restaurant that’s just stranded in the middle of the sea. While it is still a restaurant boat, you can clearly see that it connects to various docks that lead into the restaurant with concept art even teasing other environments around it. So, it may be part of an island or simply have a unique docking location that adds some new platforms for the eventual fight with Don Krieg, who has yet to be cast. The details in the interior hopefully also mean we’ll see the restaurant get wrecked throughout their battle.

    Arlong’s Map Room

While not being showcased, there was a highlight by Matt Owens that they have been working on Arlong’s map room for weeks. Many manga fans will instantly make the connection with what emotional importance that room holds to Emily Rudd‘s Nami and while it’s a shame we didn’t even get a tease of what it looks like. Still, the matter of the fact is that it getting highlighted showcases just how much this team truly loves Eiichiro Oda‘s manga. So, maybe a future tease is on the horizon that offers a better look at the sets and villages we have yet to see.

    Windmill Village and Red Force

While talking about the Baratie, there was an interesting group of set videos being shown that seemingly have no direct correlation to the iconic boat restaurant. well, the windmills seemingly hint at this being Luffy’s hometown. It is where he meets Shanks (Peter Gadiot) and sets sail to become King of the Pirates. We even get a good look at Partys Bar, which is where we have the iconic bar sequence between Shanks and a mountain bandit. It’s also where we’re introduced to Makino, whose child over the many years of One Piece has led to quite a few fan theories.

Yet, if you look at the right corner of the first image, there’s one more detail that could be easily overlooked. That is the Red Force’s iconic dragon-inspired figurehead. It belongs to Shanks, and a set photo we saw some time ago confirms they have a life-sized boat docked on the set. It’s crazy to see this shot and realize that ship is really there just towering over the village. There’s also one shot with a red ship that could be connected to the Red Force during the showcase. It’ll be interesting to see just how much they use it in the upcoming series.

    Mysterious Boat

Before I get on to the cast additions, I want to point out one additional ship that they for some reason give some attention to. While it’s nothing that one would connect, at first sight, it may actually be connected to the Baratie storyline. Given the shape and housing in the back, it does seem like this could be Johnny and Yosaku’s ship that the crew use to get to Arlong Park.

It’s unclear if that is indeed their ship, as the design could also be hinting at something belonging to Buggy’s crew, whose ship has been noticeably absent during the promotion. It’s the little house it is parked at that adds a few questions, but it’s fun to speculate. We don’t know what elements may get adapted going into the live-action adaptation, especially with fewer episodes than the anime to work with. So, it’s going to be interesting to see if this ship is simply a set design.

    New Casting Announcements

While not directly part of the showcase, we got quite a few casting additions. We have Usopp’s technical love interest with Celeste Loots‘ Kaya. Her infamous butler Klahadore is also officially announced with Alexander Maniatis in the role. Their addition confirms that we will visit Syrup village and follow that arc in some format as well. As Baratie was highlighted quite a bit, we have Craig Fairbrass as Chef Zeff, who also is no stranger to working with Taz Skylar. Nami’s sister Nojiko has been found, as she will be played by Chioma Umeala. Last, but not least, we also have the chin himself, Captain Morgan played by Langley Kirkwood, who’s the father of Helmeppo (Aidan Scott). The only main characters still missing so far would be the King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger, Smoker, Jacko, and Don Krieg. Of course, there are also some smaller roles that haven’t been officially announced yet, as they may slowly announce them building up to the series’ release.

  • ‘Fargo’ Season 5 Slated to Star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh

‘Fargo’ Season 5 Slated to Star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh

The hit FX series Fargo currently has its fifth season in development and it has now been announced that Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh will be starring. Not much is known about who the three actors will be portraying besides the names of their respective characters. Hamm is set to play Roy, with Temple playing Dot, and Leigh playing Lorraine. This season of the anthology series, that is set in the same universe as the 1996 film of the same name, is set in 2019, marking the most modern time period for the franchise. Fargo’s upcoming season will ask the questions of “When is kidnapping not kidnapping, and what if your wife isn’t yours?”

Hamm, Temple, and Leigh join the large cavalcade of elite actors and actresses who have taken part in the Fargo series. These include the likes of Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton in the first season, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons in season two, Ewan McGregor in season three, and Chris Rock and Jessie Buckley in the fourth.

The Fargo series was created in 2014 by critically renowned director Noah Hawley, who serves as writer, director, and executive producer for the show. Since its release, Fargo has found mass critical acclaim having been nominated for 55 Emmys and winning six, including best miniseries for its first season in 2014. However, the most recent outing for the franchise received its lowest marks in terms of reception (even though the response to the fourth season remained positive overall). It will be interesting to note on if and how Noah Hawley and the team behind the show can retool and provide more of a bounce-back for the series with this new season.

  • ‘Ted Lasso’ Writer Teases Apple TV+ Show May End With Season 3

‘Ted Lasso’ Writer Teases Apple TV+ Show May End With Season 3

Ted Lasso is seen as a cultural phenomenon, as it brings a lot of positivity with each new episode. It seemed like a franchise that would keep going forever, but according to one of its writers and stars, Brett Goldstein, the series is currently being written as its last in an interview with Sunday Times.

We are writing it like that. It was planned as three. Spoiler alert — everyone dies.

    Brett Goldstein

Yet, as Variety points out, the co-created Jason Sudeikis has confirmed it was originally mapped out with three seasons but was open to continuing. All it would depend on if they have a few ideas to keep it going. He developed the series together with Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly which was actually inspired by a character he played on NBC Sports. Sudekis” quote was as follows:

The story that I know is the one that I wanted to tell, and so that’s the one we’re telling with the help of numerous people in front of and behind the camera, so it’s by no means me typing every key stroke and saying every word,” he said. “It’s nowhere near like that. But the story that’s being told – that three-season arc – is one that I see, know, and understood. I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know.

    Jason Sudekis

Apple TV+ has quite the success on its hands and they even got the Premier League licensing for the upcoming season. So, it would be strange to go through that deal to only end the series right afterward. It lets them use archival footage and its many logos in the series, which may have had multiple years planned but we’ll find out once they start promoting the third season.

  • Marvel Studios Promised ‘Deadpool 3’ Writers It’s Not Going to Be a “Disney-Fied Deadpool”

Marvel Studios Promised ‘Deadpool 3’ Writers It’s Not Going to Be a “Disney-Fied Deadpool”

Marvel Studios is a very different beast from what 20th Century Fox once was. Many have created a vision of what defines an MCU film and how Disney influences their productions. That led to some concerns by fans regarding some darker characters, especially when it was confirmed that Deadpool 3 is on the horizon. Luckily, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick deny any such influence.

In an interview with The Playlist, they even highlight that while the studios have a very different dynamic, Marvel Studios has been quite a consistent support through it all. Outside of potentially pointing to some jokes going too far, which isn’t uncommon in any studio system.

Obviously, it’s like, it’s two completely different regimes, right? So, it’s two different bureaucracies. It was Fox, all these different people, and now it’s not those people anymore. It’s these [Disney] people and these people do things their way. And we were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel’s been incredibly supportive. They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It’s not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, ‘you know, that’s too far,’ that could happen, but to this point, it’s been nothing but support

    Rhett Reese

The big highlight is how they’ve been approached by Marvel in trying to bring this film to life. It seems that they not only are offering ways to make it easier for them but also confirming that they are not going to force anyone to create a “Disney-fied Deadpool“.

It’s been nothing but, ‘how can we help you?’ ‘What from our universe would you like to use? How, how can we make your life easy?’ And we’re gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool. We’re not… this is not going to be the Disney-fied ‘Deadpool.’ So they’re awesome, and now it’s up to us to come through and justify that faith

    Rhett Reese

That was one of the biggest concerns for the film, but they also confirm that we will have curses, joking referring to the title on the script being “Dead F*** Pool” but that they are definitely going for an R-rated rating. So this hopefully takes away some of the concerns that people had in regards to how they’ll bring Deadpool to life.

  • ‘I Am Groot’ Won’t Be a Weekly Release

‘I Am Groot’ Won’t Be a Weekly Release

So far, Disney+ has been focusing on a weekly release model unlike its streaming giant counterpart, Netflix. All Marvel Studios series were released on a weekly basis and it looks like they will break that tradition with the upcoming short collection of I Am Groot. It’s following the same structure as other shorts that have was released in the past on the Disney+ service, such as Olaf Presents or Scrat Tales.

The Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff, I Am Groot, will consist of five shorts but there are no exact details on how long each individual episode will be, but as they are titled “shorts” we shouldn’t expect an overarching storyline or long episodes. Also, this isn’t a new thing for the service and isn’t a sign that they are changing the model, as it’s rather common for the service in how they tackle their shorts.

It would be a tall order to tell people to wait weekly for shorts that might not even break the two-minute mark. While it would be great to see them play around with some series being made available to binge, it doesn’t seem like this is their plan for any other series outside of the various shorts that they’ve offered with Pixar, Disney Animation, and now Marvel.

  • ‘Deadpool 3’ Writers Open Up on Almost Being Replaced by ‘Bob’s Burgers’ Writers

‘Deadpool 3’ Writers Open Up on Almost Being Replaced by ‘Bob’s Burgers’ Writers

Some might remember that originally, the third Deadpool film was going to be written by Bob’s Burgers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin. Suddenly, as director Shawn Levy joined the production, we got the confirmation that the original writers of the franchise, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, were back on board. There still hasn’t been an official word on why they returned to the franchise but had a chance to talk about what it was like in an interview with The Playlist.

Yeah, that did happen. And look…It just came down the way it did, but we’re thrilled to be back is the bottom line. We just couldn’t be happier where we are right now in the mad scientist lab creating fun stuff and hopefully, we’ll get a movie out to you guys soon.

    Rdhett Reese

The interviewer does seem to hint that it was an uncomfortable position when they had to discuss it. We never found out how they rejoined the project and it may have been some behind-the-scenes discussions that went wrong as it’s the first 20th Century Fox project being brought over to the MCU. So, it may have left some friction contractually speaking, but that is just speculation. The writing duo is excited to be back and that seems to be what matters most.

We want to make it great. We’re in the laboratory working on it with Ryan Reynolds all the time, and we’re very much entertaining ourselves. So, hopefully, that translates and ultimately will entertain the world. But you know, it’s a marriage between Fox and Disney and it’s two different universes and it’s not easy. But it’s also a wonderful challenge and, you know, high-class problems to be able to merge those, those worlds. So, we’re, we’re enjoying it

    Rhett Reese

Deadpool will be Marvel Studios’ first venture into R-rated territory and it seems they aren’t going to shy away from it. It would’ve been great to know what Bob’s Burgers writers brought to the table but it’s also great to have the duo back that made the character’s cinematic arrival as iconic as it is.
