SWCA: Lucasfilm Executive Promises More Anime Like ‘Star Wars Visions’

Star Wars Celebration is winding down, but there’s still one more event currently going on and that is the special panel on Star Wars Visions. We’ve long hoped for an update on what the future has in store for the franchise, and luckily Lucasfilm executive James Waugh confirmed that there will definitely be more anime in the future of the Star Wars franchise. When he was asked if we’ll see more like Visions, he didn’t yet say anything about a second season but that there’s a bright future ahead for anime and Star Wars.

Star Wars and anime has a very, very bright future.

SWCA: First Footage Description for ‘The Bad Batch’ Season 2

Star Wars Celebration is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any highlights on the last day. After quite a bit of silence on the second season of The Bad Batch, they finally showed off some of it during its panel at the event. Our very own Hunter Radesi was lucky enough to get in and share some of the footage he got to witness and share what was shown off. The following footage description is from the show’s premiere episode.

Some time has seemingly gone by since we last spent time with the Clone Troopers. Omega has aged and they have a new look as well. Their armor is now grey with some orange thrown in. Omega is playing at the beach while Tech reprimands her to focus on her studies. Suddenly, the other members are being chased by a giant crab monster. While they try to shoot at it, Omega gets caught between it and their ship. She shoots a few perfect shots with her bow and seemingly takes the beast down.

  • REVIEW: ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Starts Disjointed But Ends on a High Note

REVIEW: ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Starts Disjointed But Ends on a High Note

It’s been a long wait since we got the last season of Stranger Things but it has finally come to an end. We return to our motley crew of rebellious teenagers as they face teenage angst, being accepted in high school, and an interdimensional threat. You know, normal teenager stuff with some 80s flair. Yet, the latest season sees our crew split up across the United States as a new threat arises to haunt the innocent town of Hawkins. Can the story keep up the momentum after almost three years?

Jumping back into the world of Stranger Things took a bit. We catch up with what has happened in the meantime since the events of the original. There’s a lot that happened off-screen which the show tries to make up for with a quick catch-up. One thing that does become a bit of a hindrance for the earlier episodes is that after splitting them up in the last season, most of the time is spent on them once again reuniting. It does feel like the beginning could’ve been shortened at times, but they were at their own mercy from how they ended the last season.

The thing that sticks out this time around is that we have a very clearly defined bad guy early on. While the Upside-Down will always be this malevolent force behind everything, we get introduced to a more humanoid creature, which will later be called Vecna. While visually stunning with the practical suit, it doesn’t quite live up to the Flayed from last season with his more humanoid appearance. He’s still intimidating and the concept of how he uses his abilities to prey on people’s regrets is certainly a nightmarish concept. The way he kills his victims adds to the horrific body horror at play this season.

Yet, as early as we find out who our main threat is this time around, it does feel like it takes a while to get to a point where the conflict arises. We get an entire sequence on Eleven being bullied at school, which was terrible and highlighted the challenges she was facing given her past. It serves a much stronger purpose later on but it does feel like it dragged on a bit. Her reaction towards it also serves as a red herring for a later reveal, which softens the blow on the event a bit. It just depends on if you stick with it until the end.

The issue early on is that there are just way too many characters at this point which leads to some getting left behind along the way. The original cast returns but we also have the new characters of Eduardo Franco as Argyle and Joseph Quinn‘s Eddie Munson–who are both fantastic additions to be fair. We even have the return of Matthew Modine and Paul Reiser as Martin Brener and Sam Owens respectively. While it didn’t grow by too much, we already have a big cast of characters and sadly the one that gets lost in the shuffle is Noah Schnapp‘s Will Byers and Charlie Heaton‘s Jonathan Byers. They have conflicts that tie into the story but it just feels like they got sidelined quite a bit this time around, especially due to them being mostly sidelined to keep the plot moving.

However, while saying that, once the plot of Stranger Things gets going; it really gets going. The first episode ends on quite the cliffhanger, which sadly highlights the drawback of its binge model as that would’ve kept people talking for quite a while. It also highlights that this might be the scariest of the seasons so far, as while we had body horror last time around, it was more gross than scary. This time, there’s actual tension built up as we get inside the heads of the various characters before their eventual fate catches up with them.

An interesting highlight was the deep dive into the era of “Dungeons & Dragons is worshipping satan” and integrating it into the escalation of the plot. We actually get a conflict with their parents, especially as the Upside-Down starts seeping more into their world. The series is at its best when we spend time in Hawkins, where the actual threat is unleashed and it builds up this horror-mystery concept around the events. Yet, we are not only busy spending time in California but also in Russia.

There was no secret that David Harbour‘s Jim Hopper survived the events from last time and it was great to see him take the character down a darker path. Considering what he went through, the elephant moment being an absolute nightmare on screen, and how it ties back to the Cold War plots from the last season. The plot in this does build up some great tension but in the episodes provided it’s unclear how it’ll connect back into the overarching plot. So, we’ll see how the final two might pull it back into the main plot.

The issue the series faces early on is that it needs to set up many different elements to bring it all together by the end. While a bit of a drag early on, the ending is the highlight of the season besides the amazing episode “Dear Billie” with an amazing performance by Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield. Even Eleven’s little side adventure that starts off as this strange setback for her character comes together in the finale in a big way, which had me rewatch the final moments to just see what I may have missed. I am quite excited to see how this lead into the final two episodes and the eventual final season.

The new season doesn’t reinvent the wheel. The iconic music and 80s Amblin-inspired cinematography return at full force. The new characters bring something fun to the table with Eduardo Franco being quite the standout comic relief. There is some effects work that did stick out and highlight how the pandemic has slammed the VFX industry, but with any other show, it doesn’t take away from the overall experience. Stranger Things is something special and continues to be that, it just needed a little this season to get that usual flow going.

It may be a bit of a disjointed start but it pulls it back together by the end. With only two more episodes set to release in July, it’s unclear if the true season finale can pull off the same, especially with the final episode being over two hours long. Still, the setup with Vecna may be of its interesting, and knowing that the fifth will be its final season creates a really interesting atmosphere on how they continue beyond this season. So, be sure to check it out and avoid as many spoilers as possible.

  • SWCA: Jon Favreau Already Started Writing ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 4

SWCA: Jon Favreau Already Started Writing ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 4

Star Wars Celebration is still ongoing and it looks like Jon Favreau may have confirmed that while we’re months away from The Mandalorian‘s Season 3 to release, they’re already started work on a fourth season. In an interview with CinemaBlend, he talked about where they currently are with working on these series as Dave Filoni has moved on to focus on the Ahsoka series. While discussing it, he gave away that he’s already started writing on Season 4 of the Disney+ series.

With television, we’re very lucky that we don’t have to rush things through into an hour-and-a-half, two hours. We get to tell stories slowly. So now, as Dave [Filoni]’s doing Ahsoka, it’s very much informing the writing that I’m doing for [The Mandalorian] Season 4. It becomes – how should I put it – more precise.

    Jon Favreau

It’s surprising that he may have already started work on it, but we did hear that Favreau has a tendency to write these projects even before getting a confirmation. The initial pitch for the series he started working on before he even got the green light to work on it. So, he may have just put down some ideas and wants to make sure he doesn’t lose them.

It’s great to know that the series continues as it’s the only series on Disney+ that’s been running for multiple seasons like this. Marvel Studios generally goes for ongoing mini-series with the exception of Loki. So, it’s nice to have a project that continues to be a staple for the streaming service.

  • ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Overtakes ‘The Batman’ as 2022’s Highest Domestic Earner

‘Doctor Strange 2’ Overtakes ‘The Batman’ as 2022’s Highest Domestic Earner

While all eyes are on Top Gun: Maverick‘s dominance over theaters, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still held on tight to the second spot as it has pulled in $16.4M over the weekend. As such, the film has now managed to reach $370M at the domestic box office, which puts it at the top spot as the highest-grossing domestic release of 2022 so far. It has just barely passed The Batman‘s $369M and is currently on its way to passing $400M domestically.

It has now reached $868.7M worldwide after pulling in another 22.9M overseas. It’ll continue to inch its way towards a potential $900M but some predict it could still pull in around $950M. Though with new arrivals like Top Gun and Jurassic World Dominion around the corner, we might see it slow down. Still, its’s 48% drop is actually lower than that of Captain America: Civil War and has shown some surprising legs after the initial harsh drop. It further hints at this film legging out like a horror film.

It’s a considerable development that it legged out as it did, as earlier it seemed like it wasn’t going to hit $900M after that initial drop. While it’s not really possible for it to pass a billion, it’s not a measure of its success if you consider that it’s not even released in some key markets like Russia (for obvious reasons), China, Saudi Arabia, and more. So, it did perform quite well and is pulling through after some made theories on the MCU’s box office draw.

  • ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Pulls in $248M Worldwide in 3-Days, Tom Cruise’s First $100M Domestic Opening

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Pulls in $248M Worldwide in 3-Days, Tom Cruise’s First $100M Domestic Opening

It’s finally official, as the final numbers will still come in but it’s looking like Top Gun: Maverick has pulled in $124M at the domestic box office in 3-days. Keep in mind, that it’s Memorial Day weekend and it gets an additional boost with the fourth day, which puts it at potentially passing $150M by tomorrow. As of now, it’s the third-highest opening of 2022 and Tom Cruise‘s biggest opening ever in his long career. It’s also opened $100M more than the original when it was made available back in 1986.

Worldwide the film is currently at $248M which is just 0.5M short from The Batman‘s opening. It is now Paramount’s biggest opening and they already had a strong year with Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s $72M, The Lost City‘s $30M, Jackass Forever at $23M, and Scream‘s $30M. The film has beat expectations and is making quite the splash that rivals 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. It stays on track, it could even beat that film’s $153M to become Memorial Day weekend’s highest opening film.

As expected, the film is male-dominated but it’s only 58%. 30% said they’d watch it again in theaters which put it on a good hold for the next weekends. We’ll see if higher openings still end up leading to bigger drops, as was suspected with other recent releases but given how close it is to The Batman, it may have a similar development. With final numbers not yet in, it could also even pass The Batman‘s opening weekend, but we’ll know more by tomorrow.

  • First Look at Canceled Marvel MMORPG’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse’ Inspired Design

First Look at Canceled Marvel MMORPG’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse’ Inspired Design

Daybreak has been trying to set up an MMORPG for Marvel for quite some time. They worked on it before it was eventually canceled, only to go through the entire process an additional time. We’ve long wondered what it was going to look like and many assumed it might be closer to what they’ve done on DC Universe Online. Yet, as shared by UI and Motion Designer, Ramiro Galan, it may have been quite a bit different than expected.

He took to his personal ArtStation to share concept art that was made, which was first shared on Reddit by u/LongJonSiIver. The designs were made by him, as they went for a stylistic design that would pay homage to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. It also seems to have some Pixar influences given the 3D Model’s designs that are being showcased.

The designs are actually pretty nice, though it does seem interesting that the power selection and outfits are mostly just t-shirts and pants. So, it doesn’t seem like you could make your own superhero costume, but that might be something you unlock while playing the game. Of course, what would be fun is to see the designs of the iconic Marvel heroes The selection of teams might just be something they’ve added as a base, but I’d be down for a game as a SHIELD agent in the world filled with superheroes. We’ll see if an MMORPG concept manages to pick up speed at another date potentially.

  • SWCA: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Trailer Description Teases Mace Windu and Revan Look-a-Like

SWCA: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Trailer Description Teases Mace Windu and Revan Look-a-Like

Not only did the Tales of the Jedi panel give the visitors a first look at an episode focused on Ahsoka, but they also got a brand new trailer teasing the various stories that will be included in this anthology series. As shared by our own Hunter Radesi, who is attending the event, it seems that they’ve hinted at a lot of the various storylines that’ll get explored in the animated series.

There are sequences featuring Obi-Wan, Mace Windu, Bail Organa, and even Yaddle. Dooku and Windu are seen fighting side-by-side. There’s a new inquisitor with a Revan-inspired mask, which is white with red markings. Dooku also has a line that seems to reflect one by Anakin from Revenge of the Sith, possibly hinting at his darker turn. We even have Anakin making fun of Ahsoka during training. So, it looks like there will be quite a few episodes that explore different themes and concepts.

After already getting a closer look at the newly confirmed Tales of the Jedi series, we now also received the confirmation that the composer for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Kevin Kiner, is going to return for the animated anthology series. It’s not too surprising as the series will be made in the same animation style and its creator Dave Filloni is also heavily involved with the project. The news comes directly from the panel as Hunter Radesi is keeping us updated on the announcements.

  • SWCA: Description of ‘Tales of the Jedi’s First Ahsoka-Focused Episode

SWCA: Description of ‘Tales of the Jedi’s First Ahsoka-Focused Episode

Star Wars Celebration has been filled with surprises, and we even got our first real look at Tales of the Jedi. The new animated series will explore the history of some familiar faces throughout Star Wars‘ long history and our very own Hunter Radesi got the chance to watch an episode from the series. Here’s a description of that footage.

The episode they got to watch was titled “Life and Death.” The episodes seem to be on the shorter side with a length of 15 minutes teased for the episode that was shown and it has a similar style to The Clone Wars. It explored the story of Ahsoka Tano when she was born in a little village. We actually meet her family and there’s a celebration. A year later, she takes her hunting and teaches her lessons on the value of life.

Her mother will be voiced by Janina Gavankar, who many might recognize as Iden Verso from Battlefront II. It seems while they are hunting they get attacked by an animal that is similar to a sabretooth tiger. Her mom was keeping it off long enough for support from the village to arrive. Yet it grabs Ahsoka and brings it to her cave. She manages to communicate with it through the Force so as not to get eaten. She returns o her village riding it and we meet an old lady that proclaims that “Ahsoka is a Jedi.”
