  • ‘Cowboy Bebop’s Daniella Pineda Joins ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’

‘Cowboy Bebop’s Daniella Pineda Joins ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’

I am still recovering from Cowboy Bebop‘s cancellation, but it looks like the stars of that series have some new projects on the horizon. Variety has just revealed that former Faye Valentine, Daniella Pineda, has joined the upcoming spinoff series Tales of the Walking Dead. She joins an all-star cast consisting of Poppy Liu, Terry Crews, Anthony Edwards, Jillian Bell, and Parker Posey. Each episode will explore a different corner of The Walking Dead universe and it was also announced that former characters would also potentially make an appearance at some point.

There’s no word on what role she’ll exactly tackle, especially as an anthology series tends to include multiple different storylines. Pineda made a name for herself in TV shows like The Originals, What/If, and The Detour, but also appeared in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and is set to appear in the upcoming Dominion sequel. Her most recent appearance was on the previously mentioned live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, which was canceled after one season.

  • ‘The Mandalorian’ Spinoff ‘Ahsoka’ Adds Ray Stevenson in an Antagonist Role

‘The Mandalorian’ Spinoff ‘Ahsoka’ Adds Ray Stevenson in an Antagonist Role

Ray Stevenson will be making his return to the Star Wars universe in the upcoming Ahsoka spin-off series, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. The actor is no stranger to the galaxy far far away, having voiced a Gar Saxon in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels. The actor will instead be making his way to a live-action series this time around in a new role

He will take on an antagonist role and will be playing an admiral. Sources say that he is not Grand Admiral Thrawn, who is believed to be the main antagonist of the series and has yet to be cast. Plot details for the series remain under wraps for the most part, although it is believed we will see Ahsoka Tano traveling alongside Sabine Wren, a character making her live-action debut, in search of Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn.

The series is currently scheduled to begin production towards the end of April over in Los Angeles. The series will feature the return of Rosario Dawson as the titular character, following appearances in both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Dawson is joined by Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine, Ivanna Sakhno, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Hayden Christensen, with Mena Massoud rumored to be playing the role of Ezra Bridger.

The series currently has no set release date but will most likely release sometime next year exclusively on Disney+. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau return for the series with Filoni primarily writing and Favreau serving as executive producer.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

The cast of the Barbie film continues to grow, as in the latest Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision blog it was announced that Simu Liu has joined the production. He’ll join the Margot Robbie-led project that is from the minds of Greta Gerwig – who is also directing the project – and Noah Baumbach. Ryan Gosling is also part of the cast and his casting is another sign of how Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings catapulted him to the top of casting lists. He’s not the only addition, as just the other day we heard that America Ferrera is also joining the film’s cast.

This film is still continuing to blow away expectations, as a film based on the popular doll seems like something that would get rushed out. Barbie isn’t a stranger to cheap productions either, as there are many children-focused films that released throughout the years – and my step-sister forced me to watch with her when she was younger. Given how popular the product is, it seems like there’s a big hope to not only bank on the brand but potentially even create a film that defies expectations similar to how the Lego Movie used a meta-narrative to surprise viewers at the time. There’s still some time before it starts production, but it might become a project to keep an eye out for.

  • Owen Wilson Confirms ‘Loki’ Season 2 to Start Production “Very Soon”

Owen Wilson Confirms ‘Loki’ Season 2 to Start Production “Very Soon”

In a new video by Wired, Owen Wilson appeared to answer a few of the top googled questions involving him. At one point, the topic of Loki comes up and he shares the enjoyment he had working on the project and also confirms that production will start soon. It was hinted at the end of January that Marvel Studios was eyeing a production start in the summer even if Kate Herron‘s replacement still hasn’t been officially announced yet after she left the project shortly after the first season’s finale. Wilson doesn’t give away when exactly only that it’ll be “very soon.”

Yes, he is coming back to Loki and I think we’re going to start filming that very soon. Had a great time filming on Loki.

First off, I love how the actor says the word “Loki” during this interview and he seems to really have enjoyed his time on the production. He also gave one of the most heartfelt performances in the first season and we hopefully might get a lot more from the actor in the MCU’s future as Mobius M. Mobius. Secondly, it’s interesting that they are eyeing a production start so soon without any new director attached to the project. Perhaps they are waiting for the right time to announce, as most eyes are currently on the upcoming release of Moon Knight. For now, we’ll have to wait and see who will take over as Loki faces a new TVA with familiar faces and a new leader in charge.

  • Paramount’s ‘Harbinger’ Adaptation Adds Director Wes Ball

Paramount’s ‘Harbinger’ Adaptation Adds Director Wes Ball

It looks like a project that has been in development hell for some time has finally picked up some steam, as Deadline just reported that Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball has joined the adaptation of Harbinger. Paramount Pictures is eyeing an adaptation of the Valiant Comic of the same name that follows a group of teenagers with powers and their conflict with a corporation exploiting their abilities. The script will be written by Andrew Lanham, who recently worked on Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi. It’s part of Ball’s first-look deal with Paramount and his production company Oddball Entertainment.

For some time, the project was being developed by Sony with Dylan O’Brien and Noah Centineo being targeted for titular roles. Yet, it seems that there is currently no talent involved with the projects. It’s unclear when Ball may tackle this project, as he is currently busy developing a reboot of Planet of the Apes for Disney, but the script is being worked on with Josh Friedman involved.

Originally, our own Charles Murphy broke the news on Sony’s original plans for the project back in 2018, where Justin Tipping was eyed to helm the project. It was part of a five-picture deal with Neil Moritz’s Original Film Studio that was eyeing the adaptation of Valiant Comics. So far, the only one realized is still Vin Diesel‘s luke-warm adaptation of Bloodshot. Here’s hoping the project can finally pick up the pace to bring the David Lapham and Jim Shooter series that started back in 1992 for 41 issues. We’ll keep an eye out for further updates.

  • Disney to Announce Netflix Marvel Show’s New Streaming Home Soon

Disney to Announce Netflix Marvel Show’s New Streaming Home Soon

It seems like the news is just not stopping. what started with a sudden inclusion of a deadline on the Marvel Netflix series would end up in a discussion on what exactly was going on. Some believed it might be nothing more than a bug until Entertainment Weekly confirmed it. Not just that, Insider also announced that this change was due to the rights returning to Disney. Now, Deadline has also shared that we might find out what the future has in store for them soon.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders were all co-produced between Netflix and ABC Studios. Disney is currently keeping quiet on the returning rights, but Deadline shared that we can expect an announcement on their new streaming home sooner rather than later. Plus, it further re-establishes the fact that Marvel Studios can now further explore these characters in new projects moving forward.

At this point, it seems likely given the darker themes of these series they will end up as part of Hulu’s offerings and internationally through the Star branding. Deadpool, Logan, Hit-Monkey, and MODOK were recently released as part of that branding and it wouldn’t be too surprised if it follows suit. We don’t know if these former Netflix Originals might even end up as “Original” series under these new streaming banners.

  • Netflix’s Marvel Show Rights Returned Back to Disney

Netflix’s Marvel Show Rights Returned Back to Disney

Just earlier today, we’ve noticed that something was different about Netflix’s Marvel shows. Some of the shows included the message that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and the other shows produced together with Marvel TV would be leaving the service on February 28th. EW has gone on to confirm that they are indeed leaving the service, but it was Insider that offered some insight into why this sudden change happened.

Insider was informed by an insider that the rights to the series have returned to Disney. Looking back, while Netflix was streaming the series as originals, they were technically ABC Studios productions – a subsidiary of Disney’s. As such, they were only the distributor and may have supported some of the production financially. Starting in 2018, all shows were canceled as what seemed like a rebuttal to Disney working on their own streaming service.

Some of the actors have started making their return to the MCU with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio‘s recent appearances. There are even rumors that Krysten Ritter might also make her return as Jessica Jones but there’s silence on the rest of the cast. So, we’ll see if the shows end up being integrated into the MCU or become Marvel TV Legacy projects. There’s no word if they’ll release on Disney+ or even Hulu, but it seems very likely. For now, we’ll have to wait until March to see what exactly the future has in store for these projects.

  • REVIEW: Darkness Reigns and Heroes Rise as ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Continues

REVIEW: Darkness Reigns and Heroes Rise as ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Continues

When the first half of Amazon Prime’s The Legend of Vox Machina came to a close, it really felt more like a new beginning for the animated series. The violent, raunchy hijinks of the show’s intrepid protagonists had made the initial mish-mash of adventures a fun watch, but building tension and a genuinely surprising mid-season cliffhanger seemed to be promising something different was on the horizon. In its latest batch of episodes, the series delivers on this promise with exciting confidence and a whole lot of gravitas. After taking its time to introduce its audience to a wide cast of characters, and the expansive world which they inhabit, the series dives headfirst into tightening loose ends and streamlining its story. This allows for some wonderful growth on the part of a handful of leads who felt stagnant in previous episodes, while still leaving room for more developments to come.

Vox Machina‘s continued run is, by nature of its own plot, also quite a bit darker than what viewers will have seen prior. This is by no means a bad thing. While the series’ general gimmick, having been based on the tabletop antics of jovial friends, would seem to imply a lighthearted adventure, the latter half of this season is going in very much the opposite direction. Franchise creator Matthew Mercer and voice acting staple Grey Griffin delight in causing chaos as the merciless Briarwood couple, who serve as genuine, anxiety-inducing antagonists.

A combination of their immense bloodlust and a never-ending supply of monsters lends itself to creating a darker tone and balances surprisingly well with the comical dialogue often spewing from the mouths of the titular group. For example, a massive horde of the undead makes it possible for the leads to maintain and bounce their charming chemistry off one another while keeping the stakes fairly high. It also allows for the series to keep up a constant stream of its increasingly signature violence in some of the most creative ways it can imagine.

An eerier tone brings with it a renewed sense of drama, with the new episodes wasting no time to capitalize on the dramatic final reveal from the ending moments of the season’s sixth entry. Fans are gifted with a litany of new information about Taliesin Jaffe‘s Percival de Rolo, whose origins have quickly become the emotional crux on which the series thrives. The fleshing out of his character comes at exactly the right time, shining a light on why exactly it is we should care about him and his objective in the first place.

Not to mention, a lot of it is just really cool. Vox Machina does an excellent job of mixing nerdy clichés with actually well-done character progression, leading to several moments that are both rewarding and joy-inducing. Thankfully, Percy isn’t the only character who gets a promotion in storytelling. The first half of the season featured not one, but two gnomes with somewhat flat development. Obviously, it’s unfair to claim a character lacks dimension before a full set of episodes has even aired, and Vox Machina proves to it’s audience why.

Ashley Johnson‘s Pike Trickfoot felt like a hero meant to be a fan favorite, but her lack of contributions to the team and the continuous sputtering of her abilities left her character trailing behind the others. Luckily, her side quest pays off in a big way when the series returns, giving her the big moment it always felt like she would have down the road. Sam Reigel‘s Scanlan Shorthalt was in a similar predicament. Though always good for a dirty joke and a hearty laugh, it never quite felt like he had as much depth as some of his fellow companions.

Here, however, the rockstar bard gets an episode all to himself and rises to the occasion in a way that cements him as a genuine article going forward. Some of the leads who flourished in the spotlight earlier in the show get to take a backseat for a while, but this will prove to be worth it in the long run. By the time the show begins hurdling towards its finale, the audience will have an emotional connection, and familiarity, with each one of its protagonists. With any luck, this means the final three episodes will be able to take all of what we’ve seen so far and wrap it up with a nice, hilarious, bloody bow.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Dick Grayson, Harper Row and Spoiler Headline the Roster of CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’

EXCLUSIVE: Dick Grayson, Harper Row and Spoiler Headline the Roster of CW’s ‘Gotham Knights’

A decade after the premier of Arrow, the CW continues to expand its slate of live-action DC content. In the last decade, more than half a dozen series have made their way to the network and now production is close to beginning on the newest addition, Gotham Knights. The series just recently got a pilot order, meaning it’ll shoot its first episode before possibly being handed a series order. Since the initial report, fans have been in the dark on just who the series will follow with no details on its characters…until now.

Thanks to a friendly source, we’ve been able to put together a pretty good picture of the show’s core characters, the Bat Family. The series is currently looking to cast several series regulars ahead of an April start of production in Toronto.

Most notably, Gotham Knights is looking for an actor, 18 or older, to fill the role of a series regular that fits the bill of Dick Grayson, the first Robin and adopted son of Bruce Wayne.
Described as “athletic” and “sensitive”, the character remains resilient despite being vulnerable following the murder of his parents and subsequent adoption by Wayne.

Interestingly enough, it looks like Grayson won’t be the only former Robin on the show. It seems as though Grayson will be joined by Stephanie Brown, aka Spoiler, a genius-level hacker whose father, a DC villain called Cluemaster, raised her on a “steady diet of brain teasers and puzzles.” Gothman Knight is searching for an 18-year old actress to portray the “sarcastic and smart” character.

We can also deduce that Harper Row, aka Bluebird, is set to join Grayson on the team. The studio is searching for a female to play a “blue-haired bisexual” character who has taken to the streets to escape her abusive home life. Her brother, Cullen, also looks to be joining the series with the studio searching for a transgender actor who identifies as male for the role.

Gotham Knights will also feature “a quick-witted British attache” who sounds like she could be Julia Pennyworth, daughter of Alfred Pennyworth. In the comics, Julia came into the picture after her father was disabled following an attack from Hush. Following in her father’s footsteps, she helped the Bat Family coordinate their efforts.

Probably the most startling character headed for Gotham Knights is one described as the daughter of “the most dangerous man in Gotham.” First thoughts are that the series is going to introduce “Joker’s daugher”, Duela Dent, who claimed to be the daughter of the Joker and also claimed to be the daughter of about every villain in Gotham.

The CW is also searching for a handful of other series regulars, including one that could be Lucius Fox’s daughter, Tiffany, to join the team in addition to the already exciting number of characters listed here, many of whom will be making their live-action debut. There’s also room for plenty of guest stars and supporting members of the cast. Hopefully, with the scheduled start of production right around the corner, casting will start to trickle out soon.

  • New DCEU Promo Teaser Offers First Full Look at ‘Black Adam’s Justice Society of America

New DCEU Promo Teaser Offers First Full Look at ‘Black Adam’s Justice Society of America

It was during the first DC Fandome when Dwayne Johnson confirmed that his upcoming film, Black Adam, would feature the Justice Society of America. The team was one of the first superhero teams to come together in the golden age of comics. This film will finally be their big-screen debut after multiple TV appearances. The upcoming roster will consist of Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone and a new promo gave us our first official look at their costumes.

The first reveal is of the film’s take on Hawkman, as he extends his wings to fully reveal his gold and maroon color scheme. The character is quite accurate to his comic counterpart with the winged helmet and all. Now we just need to see his iconic mace.

The next one is the team’s veteran member, Doctor Fate. He is the DCEU’s equivalent to the Sorcerer Supreme. Perhaps the most interesting detail of the suit is that the Helmet of Fate appears to not have any eye slits. Maybe they’ll work in some details during post-production, possibly having them glow yellow, but it’s a curious update on the design.

Atom Smasher is here barreling through the streets in his iconic comic-accurate look, featuring his blue and yellow color scheme with a bronze belt. The mask features white eyes, something we don’t tend to see too often in comic book adaptions, but it’ll surely please fans.

The final look is of Quintessa Swindels‘ Cyclone, the granddaughter of the first Red Tornado who possesses wind-like abilities. The character is sporting a green armored dress look, reminiscent of her comic counterparts.

The designs look great and we can’t wait to see them in action. In the teaser, it does seem like Doctor Fate is trying to convince Black Adam of joining their side and may have offered our first glimpse at the film’s direction. It is currently set to hit theaters on July 29th, 2022.
