    ‘The Boat’ and ‘Blood on the Crown’ Are the Big Winners at the First-Ever Malta Film Awards

    It was a big week in Malta, as they had their first-ever Malta Film Awards. The country was shaped by its history with Hollywood, such as it is the main country where Ridley Scott filmed Gladiator and the fact it’ll soon be featured in Colin Trevorrow‘s Jurassic World: Dominion. We had the honor of flying down to the island and participating in the event, which was hosted by comedian David Walliams. The award ceremony was, naturally, focused primarily on national talent and productions but there was also some love offered to those that put the market on the Hollywood map. The big winner of the night was The Boat, a thriller by Joe and Winston Azzopardi.

    There were quite a few winners, as Davide Ferrario‘s Blood on the Crown dominated the night with Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Musical Score, and Best Production Design. Harvey Keitel even won the award for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work on the film. There were also some awards handed out to celebrate Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe‘s contribution to the country, who appeared through some heartwarming pre-recorded videos. Crowe especially went all out, as he showcased that he still owns Maximus’ ring from his time on Gladiator.

    Director Colin Trevorrow has even been awarded the first Malta Film Commissioner’s Award for his work on Jurassic World: Dominion, where the island is set to make an appearance as itself and not just as a filming backdrop for another country. The two-hour event was filled with a high production value, many local stars sharing their excitement about the future, and their hope to establish this as a yearly event.

    ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ Sequel Announcement to Follow Later This Year

    Final Fantasy VII Remake redefined our understanding of the original franchise and left us wanting more. As the next release was uncertain, we got the Intergrade DLC that offered a smaller piece of content as we waited for the full release of its second part. Plus, we know very little about how much the sequel would cover from the original game, as the first entry only covered the Midgar storyline from the original. Sadly, it seemed like today’s 25th anniversary live stream won’t give us an update, but luckily it seems we won’t have to wait that much longer.

    Producer and director of the original Final Fantasy VII, Yoshinori Kitase, revealed that the first details of the sequel will be revealed throughout the year. The quote, whose translation is provided by Twitter user PushDustIn via VGC, does hint at some uncertainties if the 2022 reveal is definite.

    We are hard at work on Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, so please look forward to that. In addition, with regards to the long awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake [Part 2]… there will be more information… this year if we can.

    Still, this does mean that the reveal won’t take too much longer potentially. It’s going to be two years since the first part was released, and if we get our first details this year, we could hope for a potential 2023 release. There probably won’t be another piece of DLC, but it’ll be interesting to see how our work in the first part may potentially lead into the sequel, such as Materia, gear, or skills. Here’s hoping that the wait isn’t too much longer, as we head into a massive 2022 year filled with anniversaries.

    ‘Final Fantasy VII’ Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary With a New Logo

    There are quite a few celebrations this year, such as Kingdom Heart‘s 20th anniversary, Persona is celebrating its 25th anniversary and so much more. Among them is also the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, which many deem as the turning point for the entire franchise into what it is today. Of course, there’s always a lot of excitement around these celebrations, as there are high hopes for reveals and confirmations that fans are clamoring for.

    In addition to the recent release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, there was a new wave of entries in the numbered part of the franchise, such as the recently released The First Soldier mobile game with Ever Crisis on the horizon. We’re still anxiously awaiting any news on the second entry in the Remake franchise, but to hold us over we got a brand new logo celebrating the 25th anniversary of the franchise, which you can check out here:

    Even the Kingdom Hearts franchise continued its tradition of paying homage to the series with a visual that recreates an iconic cover from the game but uses assets from its own franchise instead. They did something similar during its 20th anniversary

    There’s a stream planned for today, but there was a confirmation that we shouldn’t expect any news regarding the Remake sequel, as only The First Soldier content has been hinted at so far. Of course, there’s always a chance they might surprise fans, but it seems a bit unlikely as of now. We also haven’t heard anything on Ever Crisis since its announcement last year. Yet, there have been hints that the franchise has started an interest in other spinoffs after Remake’s success. For now, the celebration seems to be mainly for the past rather than the future.

    Netflix’s Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Series Finally Starts Production

    Spring has seemingly come early, as it looks like Netflix’s live-action adaptation has started production. At least that is what a tweet by showrunner Steven Maeda as well as the series writer and executive producer Matt Owens revealed. It’s a different approach from previous entries, as the official Netflix Geeked account usually shared the initial announcement, such as was the case with the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation. Yet, as the account is from the States, they may follow up as filming is taking place in Cape Town and that is why the production announcement is directly through their account.

    While Maeda shared an elusive message of “The Day of the Beginning” with a straw hat keychain, Matt Owens‘ reveal came through his Instagram account that is a bit more direct in revealing that they’ve started production on One Piece.

    This moment is big for anyone following the production that was hit with delays due to COVID. The series was first announced back in 2017 by Eiichiro Oda, who was quite excited about finally finding the team that would bring his series to live-action. At the time, it seemingly was still known as Project Roger before moving on to become Project Panda at a later date. Set photos teased the construction of the Going Merry but it wasn’t until we got the official logo in September of 2021 followed by the cast announcement in November that it felt real. So, the fact it’s finally started production just adds quite a bit of excitement and hopefully, it means we’ll get the cast in their official outfits soon.

    First Paramount+ ‘Halo’ Trailer Offers First Look at Cortana and Arbiter

    Finally, the first full trailer has dropped for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Halo, which is heading to Paramount+ in March. We finally got a full look at what this new series has to offer, as it hopefully breaks the live-action curse of video game adaptations. Luckily, the new trailer not only gave us Master Chief’s voice but also the first look at the series’ take on Cortana, who will be voiced by Jen Taylor.

    That is not all, as we also got a good look at an Arbiter with a close-up of their live-action take of the Arbiters, who are part of the Sangheili alien race. Humans have given them the name Elites, who stem from the planet of Sanghelios.

    The designs are quite impressive and they seemingly brought a fresh take on the iconic gaming franchise. Of course, we still need to see if the series can keep up the quality in how it tells its story, but it does seem like they’ll use the time to humanize Master Chief and even offer some interactions with other Spartans, which lets us explore his origin.

    Pablo Schreiber‘s take on the iconic supersoldier does seem promising and we’re excited to see if the series can break the live-action adaptations curse and manage a promising story, especially after it was stuck in development hell for quite some time.     New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Concept Art Offers Closer Look at Unused Villain Designs

    Spider-Man: No Way Home has been dominating the box office, as it combined a heartfelt story with the right amount of nostalgia to keep things interesting. Of course, a big part of that is due to the returning villains that many of us grew up watching on the silver screen. Concept artist Christian Cordella has offered a closer look at some of the designs that the characters had at one point in development, such as a new jacket for Doc Ock.

    That’s not all, as we also got a closer look at how they originally envisioned Green Goblin and even Sandman. While Osborne’s design is quite close to what we saw in the film, the latter was envisioned to appear as a human throughout No Way Home. It seems Thomas Haden Church wasn’t able to return in person, but still voiced the character.

    Of course, a big part of the film’s marketing focused on Jamie Foxx‘s return as Elektro and his revamped design from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We got a closer design to his comic route and it looks like it was originally going to be a bit sleeker with the yellow lightning on his costume.

    It’s always great to get some insight into how designs change over time, and it’s curious how they wanted to change most of their designs before falling back on what they were iconic for back in their original appearances. Elektro is the only one who really went through a massive change, but that was also given in-universe reasoning. We haven’t seen anything on Lizard yet and they might even have concept art of villains that didn’t make the film like Rhino.

    It’s been known for a long time that Marvel’s upcoming sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be the final chapter of the titular team’s story. Writer and director James Gunn has said as much on multiple occasions, confirming the news once again earlier this week. However, this didn’t stop franchise star Dave Bautista from adding his two cents when asked about the threequel in a recent interview with Comic Book.

    The former wrestler, who plays the equally fearsome and hilarious Drax the Destroyer in the MCU, began his statement with a joke about his character’s many lost battles. He then went on to voice his admiration for his fellow cast-mates, his friend Gunn, and the experience he’s had working with Marvel. If these comments sound like they’re hinting at Vol. 3 being Bautista’s final superhero outing, it’s probably because they’re meant to.

    Its come full circle and I’m looking forward to wrapping it up. And it’s bittersweet. I mean, I’ve been doing ’Guardians’ since 2013 and when this thing comes out it’ll be in 2023. So that’s a ten year journey. You know, all things must end.

    There has been a lot of speculation about which Guardians will survive the events of their next adventure. It remains to be seen if Drax ends up with a space funeral of his own, or if he finally gets the victory Bautista has always wanted.

    Live-Action ‘Halo’ Series Will Premiere March 24 on Paramount+

    A live-action Halo adaptation has been one of those projects in development hell for years; it had Steven Spielberg and Rupert Wyatt attached at one point; it went from Showtime to Paramount+; the showrunners working on it split up. So it came as a surprise several months ago when they finally unveiled the first poster, confirming that the show was, finally, tangible.

    Today is a big day for fans as the trailer for the series will be unveiled during the AFC halftime show. And as a precursor to tonight’s festivities, the released date for the series was unveiled: March 24th.

    To see the show premiere so soon almost feels surreal. But March 24 is merely a few weeks away, given how February starts in a few nights’ sleep. Within a span of a few days, we’ll be able to see Halo and Moon Knight. To also see the handful of footage in that preview looks so beautiful is exciting. It looks well shot, it’s got a solid cast, and the scope looks impressive.

    ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Passes $1 Billion in International Markets

    Spider-Man: No Way Home has proven to have quite impressive legs throughout its box office run. While all eyes are on the future entries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that hasn’t stopped Sony from continuing to enjoy the rollout of the film, which has now officially passed $1 billion in international markets. Now, the film stands at an impressive $1.74B worldwide and still has no real competition until the March release of The Batman.

    After Scream briefly took over the weekend two weeks ago, Spidey passed it once again and now remains at the top spot from last week. Jon Watts‘ latest film is slowly nearing the $2B total box office without a release in China, which was supposedly signed off but has not been confirmed as of now. Its strongest market in the UK, where it becomes the best superhero title with $120.1M and also stands at a strong sixth spot.

    That market is followed by Mexico ($74.4M), Korea ($61.5M), and France ($61.2M) as some of the strongest performers internationally. The film has become the highest-grossing film of its genre throughout 19 territories, which may be a testament to just how much staying power Spider-Man has as a franchise.

    Netflix’s ‘All of Us Are Dead’ Proves the Zombies Are Not the Monsters

    Spoiler Warning: The below piece contains spoilers for the first season of All of Us Are Dead.

    What would happen if we created a monster and then, unknowingly, nearly killed the rest of the world? That’s essentially the question at hand in Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead. After seeing his son be bullied for so long, Lee Byeong Chan decides to do something about it. However, while most parents would seek more traditional routes — talking to the principal or teaching the child to fight defensively — Byeong-cheol Kim‘s Chan takes things to a new extreme. He opts, instead, to create a new type of monster by injecting his son with a new virus he’s been working on. Little does he know, that very virus will nearly destroy Korea, all while killing the one person he so desperately tried to save.

    It’s a horrifying concept that shows how far humans are willing to go in order to get what they want; essentially showcasing that families — namely children — are disposable. While the zombies are the focus of the series, it’s the humans that are truly the monsters of All of Us Are Dead. It is because of one man’s inability to be there for his son that a high school has become ground zero in a zombie attack. It is because of his choice that he has lost both his wife and son. More importantly, though, the choices throughout the series showcase how willing people are to kill those around them for the sake of safety.

    We see this first among the students with bullying and sexual harassment/assault in the first couple of episodes. Then, as the outbreak continues to reach more of their fellow classmates, the students waste no time casually throw their classmates to the hordes in hopes of escaping. It becomes fight or flight and the strongest are the ones that’ll survive. Morality goes out the door the moment the undead take over. When it comes down to it, the staff seems to all but abandon the students in favor of surviving — with one or two exceptions along the way. Even the students soon find themselves warring, eager to stay alive and away from those that’ll do harm to them. In some instances, this may mean aiding another student in becoming a zombie, abandoning a friend for the sake of getting away or pretending not to hear cries for help in order to save yourself. There are plenty of screwed-up scenarios in All of Us Are Dead in which the humans are the true monsters, however, the worst comes closer to the midway point of the series.

    After being trapped in the high school, unable to reach the outside world due to phones and internet being cut off, the students that have survived become desperate to find some sort of help. They’re tired of running from room to room, trying to barricade themselves from the dead. It only becomes harder when a new form of zombie is introduced — one that still retains its humanity. So, they take to the roof for safety, believing if they make an S.O.S sign, a helicopter will come save them. And it works, or at least, it seems like it’s working.

    What the students don’t realize, however, is that the last student rescued by the soldiers — and the one who left them for dead — has just been attacked by one of the human-like zombies at the basecamp. This leads the people in charge to order a halt to the rescue mission. The safety that was so close within reach for the teens is immediately ripped from their grasps. They are left to die at the school as the helicopter flies off without them, despite promising to recuse them initially. It’s a screwed-up situation, one that is later made worse when the same people decide to bomb the high school after a short warning, barely allowing the kids to escape.

    As terrifying as the zombies are in All of Us Are Dead, the series also shows how cruel humans can be as a whole. The zombies might’ve been created by one naïve and selfish man, but they ultimately helped to unveil the monsters in those still living.
