The Green Lantern Corps took over San Diego on Friday. DC Studios and HBO Max delivered a double-threat campaign for Lanterns, combining a massive Gaslamp Quarter “Training Headquarters” activation with an exclusive Hall H presentation led by Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler.
With the film side laying low at SDCC this year, Lanterns carried the entire live-action weight for DC Studios—and it delivered. Showcasing Pierre and Chandler’s dynamic on stage while letting fans experience the interactive Gaslamp activation proves that HBO is positioning this Earth-bound cosmic noir as a flagship television event.
True Detective in Space
Taking the stage alongside creative architects Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King, Pierre and Chandler broke down the dynamic between veteran Hal Jordan and recruit John Stewart. The panel treated attendees to a trailer and exclusive footage highlighting the central murder mystery in the American heartland, confirming that the series bridges street-level investigative noir with high-stakes cosmic lore.
In one SDCC exclusive scene, Hal pulls up to pick up John, who gives short, formal “yes sir/no sir” responses. John complains that despite training for two months, Hal hasn’t let him wear his Green Lantern power ring yet. Hal mockingly calls John a “substitute teacher” and claims he isn’t ready. He then tosses John the ring and jumps out of the moving car, leaving it to plunge off the edge of a cliff. John manages to slip the ring on just before the car crashes. He meets Hal down the road at a taco stand where Hal is casually taking photos with fans. When Hal asks what construct John created to save himself, John admits he made “bubble wrap”—prompting Hal to sarcastically mock him.
In another, Hal visits an imprisoned Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) to interrogate his former mentor about the ancient, shapeshifting Manhunters. Sinestro warns that if a Manhunter still exists, it’s the second-biggest threat in the galaxy, before mocking Hal by asking where the Guardians found his “replacement” John.
Though threat of the Manhunters may bring Hal and John together, it’s hard to see the two finding too much common ground given what’s been learned so far.
Lanterns debuts on HBO Max on August 16.
