  • Serenity Now—’Firefly’ Animated Series in Development with Nathan Fillion

If you’ve been a Browncoat for the last 24 years, you know that hope is a dangerous thing. We’ve been burned by revival rumors more times than a Reaver victim, but today, it looks like the Verse is finally calling us home. Deadline is reporting that 20th Television Animation is in early development on a Firefly animated series led by Captain Malcolm Reynolds himself!

For years, the hurdle for a Firefly revival has always been the aging cast and the massive budget required for a live-action space western. Animation solves both problems instantly. By moving to the same space that allowed X-Men ’97 be so successful, the studio can keep the original crew looking exactly as we remember them while Nathan Fillion—who has become the king of voice acting in recent years—leads the vocal booth.

The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.

    -Nathan Fillion

While Fillion is the only one officially locked in to produce and star, the report suggests that 20th Television is in active talks with the original cast members, including Morena Baccarin, Alan Tudyk and Summer Glau.

The series is set between the ending of Firefly and the 2005 film, Serenity.

  • Iman Vellani Teases Ms. Marvel’s Role in ‘Marvel Zombies’

Iman Vellani Teases Ms. Marvel’s Role in ‘Marvel Zombies’

Iman Vellani is slowly becoming the face of Marvel Studios’ iconic franchise. Robert Downey Jr. held that mantle for a long time and any inclusion of him in a film was a big selling point and if she keeps it up, she is slowly building up that role. She just recently appeared in The Marvels and while her next major live-action appearance is uncertain, she does have an animated project on the horizon.

We still don’t know when we can expect it to release but Marvel Zombies is one of the next animated features set to release. First teases hinted at the same animation style as What If and highlighted it’s likely a unique what-if scenario from the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with The Direct, Vellani reveals that not only did she already finish her work on the project but Kamala Khan will have a major role in it.

We’ve done the whole thing. It was amazing. It was so much fun. And I love—there are a lot of cool characters in the ‘Marvel Zombies’ show. And Kamala is kind of the center of the show. They described it to me, it’s like, ‘She’s basically the Frodo of the story.’ And I was like, ‘That’s amazing.

    Iman Vellani

She also highlights the excitement of having the character she started playing get to interact with various new characters through this animated style. Though, sadly, it seems they didn’t get a chance to record in a bigger group.

And I get to interact and meet all these people along her journey. And, yes, they’re only the voices, and I don’t get to hear their voices in real-time. But just, it’s my fantasies, right? Like, knowing Kamala is going to interact with some really cool people, even if it’s just animation, is so special in a lot of ways.

    Iman Vellani

So far, we know very little about Marvel Zombies which was at one point touted as the first major R-rated project by Marvel Studios. While Echo has seemingly already taken that mantle with its upcoming January release, it’s still exciting to get another hint at what’s to come and the inclusion of these actors in the animated adaptation of the beloved comic book series. Here’s hoping they might be allowed to include Ash at some point.

  • ‘TMNT: Mutant Mayhem’ Spinoff Series and Sequel Already in Development

‘TMNT: Mutant Mayhem’ Spinoff Series and Sequel Already in Development

There’s just something about those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that lets the franchise constantly reinvent itself, but still remain a strong IP for children of any generation. A brand new film is on the horizon titled Mutant Mayhem, which will be the first to feature actual teenagers in the leading role. Now, it seems that before the film even released in theaters, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are ready to start a brand new franchise.

A new spinoff series has now been confirmed, the first hinted by Cinelinx. The series will be titled Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and will appear on Paramount+. It seems that they already mapped out a two-season release and it’ll bridge the story between the first and its confirmed sequel. Jeff Rowe will return to write and direct the sequel.

Turtle veteran Alan Wan and Chris Yost will serve as the showrunners on the new Paramount+ series. Lukas Williams will be overseeing these projects as well. The main cast is expected to return and it’s unclear if we can also expect the exact same art style given a series’ smaller budget and longer runtime. Though, it seems very likely that they’ll try to keep it consistent between them.

  • ‘Spider-Verse’ Threequel Unlikely to Release Next Year

‘Spider-Verse’ Threequel Unlikely to Release Next Year

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has opened to much acclaim and is quite a success at the box office. Many saw it as the perfect showcase of what animation and superhero movies are capable of, but a recent announcement has unveiled that things were a bit rough behind-the-scenes.

In a new report by Vulture, a lot of details on how the crew is overworked were unveiled. Not just that, but they also made quite a point to highlight that Phil Lord was a big part of the production leading to many rewrites and changes even with an almost finished product.

Yet, the question remained if Beyond the Spider-Verse was even far along, but one of the anonymous animators has pointed out that they aren’t far along enough to even hit the next year’s release that was originally set when the film was split into two parts.

The only progress that’s been made on the third one is any exploration or tests that were done before the movie was split into two parts.

It’s definitely realistic that the film won’t be available in 2024. At this point, we don’t know how long the wait might end up being, but here’s hoping that for future developments of the project they’ll take their animation staff into consideration and avoid the issues that are currently being reported.

  • Animators Speak Out on Turbulent Production on ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’

Animators Speak Out on Turbulent Production on ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’

For some time now, people have used the Spider-Verse films as a showcase of what happens if you respect animators and those working don’t the project. It has commonly been used as a point of comparison between how major studios utilize their VFX houses for live-action adaptations. Yet, it seems that there was a lot more happening behind the scenes than one might’ve assumed initially.

Supposedly, while Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cost only $150M to produce, it seems like things were quite messy and costly in the long run. Multiple crew members, who range from artists to production executives, have come out to share what has happened across the many years working on the film in a new article by Vulture. And, it seems that it wasn’t pretty.

Around 100 artists have supposedly had to “flee the movie” before it was finished, as they share that the film sprinted in the last three years. One of the reasons is seemingly due to one of its producers, Phil Lord of LEGO Movies fame, having a hard time conceptualizing 3-D animation and seemingly prefers to edit with fully rendered work. This means, they finished an entire project and then end up having to scrap big chunks of it due to this editing style. Usually, these kinds of stages happen early on in production, but it seems they pretty much had to change elements that were already finished.

Subsequently, their backlog started to pile on as time went by. It’s no wonder the film was postponed by more than a year from its initial April 2022 release. At the time, it was “pandemic-related delays” but it seems there’s more to that after all. Seems that Phil Lord’s partner, Christopher Miller was surprisingly absent throughout most of the production. Lord seemingly overshadowed even the trio of directors involved with the project.

Of course, Sony executives have disputed the claim with producer Amy Pascal pointing out that “over a thousand” were involved and losing 100 isn’t too surprising. Though she did confirm that the project went through various major overhauls when it came to its visuals and narrative. Going as far as executive Vice President of Sony Pictures Imageworks, Michelle Grady, stating “It really does happen on every film,” which casts a darker shadow over their other work especially with Pascal’s stating: “Welcome to making a movie.”

Though, it should be pointed out that one stated it was a harsh experience but one that is “extraordinarily rewarding” it’s still not a good sign that what VFX and gaming industries are going through also affects animation. We’ll have to see if the WGA strike might be a big milestone to push for better experiences of employees in these creative environments but it also is a sign not to point the finger at a single scapegoat and take a look at the bigger picture.

  • REPORT Marvel Studios ‘X-Men ’97’ Series May Be Eyeing an Early 2024 Release

REPORT Marvel Studios ‘X-Men ’97’ Series May Be Eyeing an Early 2024 Release

Marvel Studios took quite a step back during 2023 with their Disney+ ventures. While we still have three live-action series set to release, it’s been a while since She-Hulk, Attorney at Law found its way into the service back in August. We’re still some weeks away until Secret Invasion will release, but it seems their latest animated venture might take just a tad bit longer than initially expected. Originally set for a Fall 2023 release during last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it seems we might have to wait until January of next year.

It seems that the US Copyright Office may be the leaker this time around. First discovered by @ScarletWitchUpd on Twitter, the series is seemingly scheduled to release on January 3rd, 2024. There’s a chance that it might just be a placeholder release date set by the copyright office for the pilot episode, as it supposedly is a pre-registration. Still, it wouldn’t be too surprising given that Echo is now set to release in November as a binge release.

Marvel Studios’ animated ventures have been showcased as something separate from the rest of their projects with the exception of What If…?. We’re still waiting for the second season of that series to release, but they generally have gone quiet on the various entries. We’ll have to wait just a bit longer but perhaps a trailer will arrive sometime in the fourth quarter that confirms the release date.

  • REVIEW: ‘Star Wars Visions’ Returns With Style and Beauty

REVIEW: ‘Star Wars Visions’ Returns With Style and Beauty

There’s no easy way to really talk about a project like Star Wars Visions. The anthology series offers something unique with different studios getting the chance to tell a unique story in a galaxy far far away. Going into the second season, Lucasfilm is taking a new approach by expanding beyond Japanese studios to give the world an opportunity to leave a unique stamp on this anthology series. Did their ambitions continue to make this series stand out in this ambitious era of animation?

One thing is clear: the idea to go beyond anime made this season truly stand out. The animation is beautiful and every studio brings something unique to each project. What continues to be the big selling point of this anthology is just taking known concepts and giving them new life by allowing other creatives to play around with the world we are familiar with. With the added variety of creatives, it adds to the feeling that these stories are quite a bit more personal this time around.

El Guiri’s Sith offers a visual showcase that blends the lines between reality in its visual style to add something that uses color in such a creative way, it caught me off-guard when its story caught up with the visuals. A lot of this season, at least early on, explores the themes of on which side of the Force you’ll find yourself. Screecher’s Reach by Cartoon Saloon and Mir’s Journey to the Dark Head offer these really interesting stories in two distinct ways. They offer a look at what you’re willing to do to accomplish your goals but end up in very different places.

Then you also have some fun with Aardman’s animated I am Your Mother, which just looks at a young X-Wing pilot cadet and her relationship with her mother. Of course, there’s also something just so charming about the stop-motion approach from the creators of Wallace and Gromit that makes this little special just stand out, especially with its humor.

Then you also have 88 Pictures’ The Bandits of Golak and Punkrobot’s In the Stars, which explore the galaxy far far away from the unique perspectives of those just trying to survive. It highlights how two very distinctly animated projects explore tales of survival in a Sith-dominated world. Even Studio La Cachette’s The Spy Dancer uses that concept to offer a rather heartfelt twist in its short runtime.

Then you also have Triggerfish’s beautifully animated Aau’s Song and D’art Shtajio’s The PIt that highlight just how diverse these stories can be told. The new season continues where the first left off and hopefully, they will continue making more seasons. Stand-outs personally were Screecher’s Reach and The Spy Dancer which felt like the perfect combination of beautiful animation with emotional storytelling. It’s not to say that the others didn’t provide the same but when you have so many good choices, it becomes difficult to truly pinpoint what makes a project stand out.

  • ‘Big Mouth’ & Spinoff ‘Human Resources’ Renewed for Final Seasons

‘Big Mouth’ & Spinoff ‘Human Resources’ Renewed for Final Seasons

Seems Netflix is cleaning the house, as one of its longest-running shows is coming to an end. Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s Big Mouth has been renewed for an eighth season ahead of the release of its latest season. The big twist is that the show about kids going through their puberty, which manifests itself into different types of creatures, will be ending with that season.

But wait folks, there’s more as Human Ressources, a spinoff show of Big Mouth, is also set to return for a final season. It only got two seasons in total and the spinoff is set to arrive later this year. What does make this stand out is that Big Mouth’s eighth season also will act as a send-off to both entries due to how they connected in the past.

Kroll shared the following statement as a joke referencing the series coming to an end:

If you would have told adolescent Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg that middle school would take 8 years to finish, they would have been like ‘yeah, that sounds about right. This seems like it will never end.

    Nick Kroll

With this cancelation, Big Mouth is the longest-running series in Netflix’s library of originals that isn’t categorized under Kids & Family. This renewal puts it ahead of Grace & Franky, which ran for a total of seven seasons. With a live-action adaptation of One Piece on the horizon, perhaps it might break its record given just how long the manga has been running; if it turns out to be quite popular of course.

The show’s popularity had many surprised given its very in-depth but fantastical look at hormones, becoming an adult, sexuality, and coming of age. Both entries combined have reached one billion hours viewed on Netflix and have been watched by 50M+ households.

  • First Cast and Story Details for ‘Flintstones’ Sequel Series ‘Bedrock’

First Cast and Story Details for ‘Flintstones’ Sequel Series ‘Bedrock’

It looks like the upcoming Flintstones sequel series titled Bedrock is moving forward. Elizabeth Banks has been spearheading the project that’ll return to the life of an adult Pebbles, as we see what life has been two decades after the original Flintstones story came to an end as the former family head is heading into retirement.

While we haven’t heard about the project for some time, it seems the Bedrock spinoff is finally picking up some steam over at Fox. It has now scored a pilot presentation after being dormant for two years. Now, we also know who will voice whom in the upcoming series, as they have an all-star line-up:

    • Elizabeth Banks as Pebbles
    • Stephen Root as Fred
    • Amy Sedaris as Wilma
    • Nicole Byer as Betty
    • Joe Lo Truglio as Barney
    • Manny Jacinto as Bamm-Bamm

It’s funny to think we knew Banks was voicing Pebbles all the way back in April 2021 with the rest of the cast being the big additions. Some might look at this project quite skeptical after the Velma debacle, which took the original concept of Scooby-Doo and tried to “subvert” it with an R-rating. There’s no word if this take on the Flintstones is more adult as it focuses on a 20-something Pebbles. What will be interesting is the tease of the Stone Age being left behind and they enter the “enlightened” Bronze Age, which will give us some interesting looks at the older cast adjusting to an uncertain time. Warner Bros. Animation and Fox Entertainment are set to produce the pilot.

  • RUMOR: ‘X-Men ’97’ Eyeing Fall Release, Eyeing 4 Season Run

RUMOR: ‘X-Men ’97’ Eyeing Fall Release, Eyeing 4 Season Run

The Marvel Rumor mill is at it again, as we’re slowly getting some hints at the future of Marvel Studios’ ventures. While they are generally taking a bit of a step back to readjust, we’re still getting some hints at what is heading our way on Disney+ at some point in 2023. Geeks Worldwide’s KC Walsh has just shared that the next live-action series Secret Invasion may be currently eyeing a May release, but that isn’t all.

He also took to his Twitter to announce that they are hoping to release the animated X-Men: The Animated Series revival by the Fall of 2023. Not only that, but he also hints that X-Men ’97 is currently eyeing a four-season run. That is quite an exciting reveal given that there have been rumors we may expect them to also dial down their animated projects as we haven’t heard anything on them since the Season 2 renewals back in 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Of course, his wording means “it’s expected to go” which hints that it’s not a definite renewal for all four seasons. There’s also the chance they may see a lot of potential to run longer, as the animated series wouldn’t be beholden by the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. We still don’t know what exactly their plans are for the animated projects, but it does seem like they are hoping to go all in with these adaptations. Here’s hoping an official announcement isn’t too far off.
