Issa Rae and Michael Cera Join the Growing Cast of ‘Barbie’

Another day, another Barbie casting announcement.

Issa Rae (Insecure) and Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) are set to join the cast of the forthcoming Barbie movie. The news comes courtesy of People. The film, which stars Margot Robbie in the titular role, has been on a casting streak as of late. On Monday, it was revealed that Will Ferrell and Emma Mackey, who is considered Robbie’s doppelganger by fans, had joined the cast. They join the previously announced Ryan Gosling, who will portray Ken, as well as America Ferrera, Simu Liu, and Kate McKinnon.

Unsurprisingly, details as to who Rae and Cera are playing are being kept under wraps, much like many details regarding the film.

A Barbie film has been in development for a few years now, with Amy Schumer originally set to star in a live-action take for Sony. That project, of course, fell apart and now Warner Bros. is developing what is being described as “something totally different” by star and producer, Robbie. In an interview last year, Robbie briefly talked about the film and how they intend to subvert expectations. “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”

Production on the film is currently underway in the U.K. Greta Gerwig is directing Barbie from a script she co-wrote alongside partner Noah Baumbach. While no release date has been announced, the film is expected to hit theaters sometime next year.

‘Barbie’ Continues to Expand With Will Ferrell and Emma Mackey Joining

Barbie continues to grow its cast even as we still know barely anything about the production or its story. Greta Gerwig is taking over directing duties for a unique take on one of the most popular toy lines. Margot Robbie takes on the titular role with Ryan Gosling rumored to play Ken. It’s unclear if the story will have everyone running around like plastic dolls, pull a fourth-wall twist, or just a simple adaptation of normal people that have the same names as these toy characters. Either way, the film has added once again to its cast Will Ferrell and Emma Mackey.

The Hollywood Reporter has hinted that there will be a meta aspect, as Ferrell will play the CEO of the toy company, which may or may not be Mattel. It’s funny to think that this is his second time tackling this kind of role, as he also was Lord Business in The LEGO Movie, where his role also had a meta meaning for the overall story.

There’s something promising about the comedic talent attached to this project, which might hint at something that might not take itself too seriously. If they do involve the actual company behind the creation of Barbie, perhaps she becomes sentient and is facing the fact that she isn’t actually real. There’s a lot of potential with this project and Gerwig is the perfect director to tackle this project and its social themes.

  • Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ Ready to ‘Tick, Tick … Boom!’ as Alexandra Shipp Joins Cast

Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ Ready to ‘Tick, Tick … Boom!’ as Alexandra Shipp Joins Cast

I am starting to run out of ways to talk about Greta Gerwig‘s upcoming adaptation of the popular children’s doll Barbie. Not only do we know very little about the actual plot of the film or even the director’s approach to modernizing the character, but we’ve had one of the biggest cast announcements. It may only rival that of Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. Still, it’s not over yet for Barbie, as Tick, Tick … Boom! star Alexandra Shipp has joined the project.

I could count down the massive cast that includes Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and so many more, but I’ll just link you to the categroy on our site here. Could one accuse me of being lazy? Probably, but try to figure out how to write about a film adapting a Barbie doll multiple times as the film just collects one actor after another. To be fair, it’s at least easier than trying to make up multiple articles that aren’t carbon copies when talking about an adaptation of J. Robert Oppenheimer‘s life.

Alexandra Shipp has been quite busy, as she filmed the sequel to Kung Fury opposite Michael Fassbender and also was in Silk Road. She’s also appeared in Shaft, and Jexi before making quite the splash with her appearance in Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s directorial debut film, Tick, Tick … Boom!. It’s great to see her join this big project, and it’ll be interesting to see how the cast members factor into the story. Perhaps we’ll get a wide variety of Barbie copies or clones, but we can only theorize for now.

  • Kate McKinnon is Latest Star to Join ‘Barbie’

Kate McKinnon is Latest Star to Join ‘Barbie’

There must be something about Barbie, as the upcoming live-action adaptation has found another actress to join the project. We just recently reported that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsSimu Liu has joined the project and now it seems like former Ghostbuster Kate McKinnon is also on board. Mattel is putting together quite the cast for a unique take on the classic Barbie doll toy. As of now, the cast consists of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrara, the previously-mentioned Liu, and now McKinnon. Greta Gerwig is attached to direct Sadly, no word on who the latest addition will play in the film.

Gerwig‘s filmography would certainly hint at a very different take on the classic Barbie doll, which isn’t a stranger to film adaptations. The cast is certainly becoming a promising addition to hint at just how invested the team behind this project is. It’ll be interesting to see what roles the actors will take on and how they might tackle the project from a modern perspective. Not much is known about the project, which has the potential to reach similar highs as The Lego Movie did back when it was released. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye out who else might end up joining, as anything is possible at this rate.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

The cast of the Barbie film continues to grow, as in the latest Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision blog it was announced that Simu Liu has joined the production. He’ll join the Margot Robbie-led project that is from the minds of Greta Gerwig – who is also directing the project – and Noah Baumbach. Ryan Gosling is also part of the cast and his casting is another sign of how Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings catapulted him to the top of casting lists. He’s not the only addition, as just the other day we heard that America Ferrera is also joining the film’s cast.

This film is still continuing to blow away expectations, as a film based on the popular doll seems like something that would get rushed out. Barbie isn’t a stranger to cheap productions either, as there are many children-focused films that released throughout the years – and my step-sister forced me to watch with her when she was younger. Given how popular the product is, it seems like there’s a big hope to not only bank on the brand but potentially even create a film that defies expectations similar to how the Lego Movie used a meta-narrative to surprise viewers at the time. There’s still some time before it starts production, but it might become a project to keep an eye out for.

  • Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Film Adds America Ferrera

Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Film Adds America Ferrera

Margot Robbie has found her co-star for the upcoming Barbie film, as Deadline has just announced that America Ferrera has joined the production that also features Ryan Gosling. Greta Gerwig is hired to direct the film that’ll bring the classic doll toy to life on the silver screen. There was no word what her role is, as Warner Bros. continues to keep the production’s plot a secret but there are teases it won’t be the typical story you might expect featuring a plastic doll.

It’s being produced under LuckyChap Entertainments with Robbie also having a producing role. Mattel’s Robbie Brenner is also involved alongside Heyday Films’ David Heyman. Ferrera has been quite busy, as she is currently set to make her feature directorial debut with an adaptation of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. She also recently worked on a few episodes of Netflix’s Latinx dramedy Gentefied.

It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle a project focused on Barbie, as many adaptations on popular toy lines have taken a strong meta-narrative direction. Great Gerwig‘s involvement certainly is a promising addition that may push the project into a new direction that will certainly surprise us. So, we’ll have to wait and see once production finally starts.
