Keanu Reeves Considering Directing Netflix’s ‘BRZRKR’

In October of 2021, BOOM! Studios launched BRZRKR, a comic book series about an immortal half man/half god named B. who bears a striking resemblance to a real-world immortal: Keanu Reeves. Written by Reeves and Matt Kindt with art from Ron Garney, BRZRKR was quickly picked up by Netflix who is developing an animated series and a live-action film that Reeves will star in and produce. Now, as development on the project continues, it turns out Reeves may decide to wear another hat.

In an interview with Collider, Reeves revealed that there’s a 33% chance that he will choose to direct the adaptation. While Reeves is one of Hollywood’s most beloved and busiest talents, he has only one credit to his name as a director in the 2013 film Man of Tai Chi. Interestingly enough, according to Reeves, his involvement as writer led him down the path to eventually direct.

I know how it’s a lot of work, but the film that I directed, Man of Tai Chi, was born, I became the director because I was part of the writing process, and I didn’t want to hand it over. I was like, oh, okay. I have to direct this. I’m not quite there yet on ‘BRZRKR’. I have to read the script, but I’m also interested in having a collaborator and what they could bring to it.

Even as Reeves did not write the script for BRZRKR and admits he has not yet read it, it’s reasonable to assume he’ll feel a similar ownership over the project given that he’s the co-author of the source material. Certainly something to keep an eye on as things progress.

SDCC: Production I.G. Will Produce Keanu Reeves’ ‘BRZRKR’ Anime For 2 Seasons at Netflix

All eyes may be set on John Wick: Chapter 4, but Keanu Reeves has an entirely different project he’d like his fans to focus on. The actor made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the future of BRZRKR, a brand new franchise co-created by Reeves and writer Matt Kindt. Debuting as a Boom! Studios comic book series in 2021, the story follows an immortal warrior named Berzerker as he battles his way through time. After centuries of honing his skills as a killer, B spends the modern age working as a government agent and attempting to find a way to end his unnaturally long life. The titular hero is illustrated in Reeves’ likeness, and the Hollywood icon has big plans for the character’s future.

It was announced last year that Netflix would produce a live-action film adaptation of the comic with Reeves in the lead role and Project Power’s Mattson Tomlin helming the script. At the time, it was said an anime series would act as the streaming service’s follow-up to the movie, but no further information was given. Now, Boom! Studios has revealed that the anime will be produced through Japanese company Production I.G., best known for their acclaimed work on Ghost in the Shell and Eden of the East. It was also confirmed that the anime will last only two seasons, planned ahead as a contained story as opposed to an ongoing epic. If that wasn’t enough, Reeves closed his panel with a final reveal that Random House will be publishing a BRZRKR novel from an unnamed New York Times bestselling author. The identity of the author is being kept under wraps for now.

Netflix Announces ‘BRZRKR’ Sequel Anime and Live-Action Adaption

Keanu Reeve has been on a hot streak for some time now. The man has become unstoppable as a movie star. He recently even played Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk: 2077 and even wrote his comic book. Just two weeks ago, the first issue of BRZRKR hit the shelves, a story about an immortal warrior known as “B.” He has been around for over 80,000 years, fighting through wars across history, who just so happens to be half-mortal and half-god. In the modern era, he has become an operative for the US government, who fights the battles no one else wants. Now, he is hellbent on uncovering the secret to his neverending life.

Netflix has acquired the rights to the new comic book series, which has already sold a whopping 615,000 units according to its publisher, Boom! Comics. Netflix will develop a live-action adaption alongside a sequel series in the form of an Anime. It’ll serve as a follow-up to the comic that will run for twelve issues. Reeves is also set to star in both projects, as the character’s likeness is based on his own.

BRZRKR’s first issue has hit shelves two weeks ago. The story was developed by Reeves, who worked on it alongside Matt Kindt. As these new projects are early in development, they currently have no release date. So, it’s the perfect time to explore the BRZRKR universe.
