Following a successful theatrical launch in 2025 with Superman, another Kryptonian will headline DC Studios return to cinemas in 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El–the cousin of David Corenswet‘s Kal-El–who made a brief appearance in Superman.
Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more fucked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.
-James Gunn on Supergirl
Based on DC Comics Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film has been described by DC Studios’ co-chair James Gunn as a “little more rock and roll” than Superman…and maybe as rock and roll as one of Marvel Studios’ most beloved and successful franchises.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn compared the upcoming DC Studios’ project to Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
While discussing the past and future of the DCU, Gunn said “Supergirl especially is a space adventure,” adding, “It’s like Guardians [of the Galaxy].”
Setting Supergirl in space not only allows for the film to hold true to writer Tom King‘s comic but also to expand the DCU into corners of the universe that have rarely been explored in live-action.
Supergirl is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
With the second season of Peacemaker landing on HBO Max shortly after Superman flew into theaters, James Gunn–the creator of both DC Studios’ projects–has been a constant part of the CBM news cycle for several months. With an official Peacemaker podcast, a near-constant online presence and plenty of interviews, Gunn provides fans of the growing DCU plenty to chew on, even if he does beat the odd dead horse.
To some extent, much of what Gunn has had to say in the past few months has been related to the future of the young shared universe, which has begun to shape up very differently than the original version of the slate he and DC Studios’ co-chair Peter Safran shared in January 2023. The original version of the studio’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters consisted of 10 projects (5 theatrical and 5 streaming) and as Gunn has frequently explained of late, some of those have not coalesced as well as he had hoped, while others have moved up in the queue. So while The Brave and the Bold, Waller, Swamp Thing, The Authority and Booster Gold wade through development hell, Clayface, Mister Miracle and, Man of Tomorrow and Wonder Woman have progressed a little more efficiently…but those may not be the only new projects on the horizon.
In a wide-ranging interview with GQ, Gunn addressed DC Studios’ future slate, teasing a trio of mystery projects.
“Right now, there’s actually two really cool film scripts that I’m hoping to take to the next level that we have general plans for, and I’m excited about both of those,” Gunn told GQ. “And then I’m excited about one TV project in particular. I don’t know why we’re not greenlighted on that already—it’s just figuring out the budget. So there’s a couple of things that are very present that I’m excited about.“
Without any further information, Gunn’s comments are left open to interpretation. On one hand, the “two really cool film scripts” Gunn mentions could very simply be Wonder Woman and The Brave and the Bold, both of which are known to be in development. On the other hand, given how projects such as Sgt. Rock and Clayface seemingly emerged from the ether, Gunn those two projects could be something he’s yet to address publicly. And the same goes for the TV project, where only Lanterns has moved forward among those projects from the original slate reveal.
Whatever the case, given how frequently Gunn finds himself in the headlines, it seems incredibly safe to assume that at least some bits of additional information about the three projects will make their way online soon.
While Superman focused mainly on fleshing out the all-new, all-different DCU’s Metropolis and its cast of characters, the film’s opening text established a world in which metahumans have been a known quantity for 300 years. That allowed for plenty of room to introduce heroes and villains in the film without necessarily having to spend too much time on their origins, something director James Gunn took full advantage of in having the Engineer and Ultraman join Lex Luthor in taking on Superman.
Even though Maria Gabrielle de Faria’s Engineer didn’t land with audiences as much as Gunn had hoped, she was a key part of Luthor’s team, so with Superman’s arch enemy set to return in Man of Tomorrow, it shouldn’t be too surprising to learn that Gunn has plans for the Engineer as well.
As confirmed by Gunn from comments made in the Superman Director’s Commentary, de Faria will return in Man of Tomorrow where fans will learn what happened to the villain after she went toe-to-toe with Kal-El and lost.
“She’s out of the movie,” said Gunn of the character in reference to her not returning to the story after being knocked unconscious by Superman. “Where does she go? Well, you’re going to find that out in the next movie.”
That sounds a bit like PlanetWatch may end up getting involved in…watching the planet…when Brainiac attacks, which is a reasonable way of having Lex and Superman team up in Man of Tomorrow. However, the Engineer wasn’t the only other villain in Superman.
“We discover that Ultraman is a clone of Superman. [In the comics], Ultraman is from Earth-3, where he’s a part of The Crime Syndicate and an evil version of Superman. There are some similarities here,” said Gunn. “Also, you might ask yourself, ‘Where does Ultraman go at the end of the movie?’ He sends him up into the black hole. Is this the end of Ultraman? I don’t know.”
While obviously more opaque than the plans for the Engineer, it does sound as though while Ultraman’s fate might be unknown to the audience, it’s a little more defined in Gunn’s mind.
Could Gunn be hinting at a Crisis on Two Earths-type film as part of his Superman Saga? It’s certainly not one on many fans’ bingo cards and would be incredibly ambitious; however, if executed properly, it would also likely stand as a giant among comic-booky comic book films.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran pulled back the curtain on the first chapter of DC Studios’ planned slate, The Brave and the Bold…and nearly three years later, that’s proven to be the case as the project has struggled to gain any positive momentum.
Inspired by Grant Morrison‘s Batman and Son arc from his epic run on Batman that began in 2006, The Brave and the Bold was described by Gunn as “a very strange sort of father-son story” featuring Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian, who Gunn referred to as “a little son of a bitch.”
[The Brave and the Bold is] a story of Damian Wayne, who’s Batman’s actual son that he didn’t know existed for the first eight to ten years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin.-James Gunn
Originally set to be directed byIt and The Flash helmer Andy Muschetti, the film was also intended to introduce “other members of the extended Bat-Family” who Gunn explained had “been left out of the Batman stories in the theater for far too long.” With so many details available by mid-2023, it seemed likely that The Brave and the Bold would follow closely behind Superman and help build a solid foundation for the all-new DCU.
However, by late 2024, progess on the film had seemingly stalled leading to Gunn explaining that the studio had “no set timeline for anything,” and that production on The Brave and the Bold–and any other DC Studios project–would not get made “until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with.” And now, as 2025 winds down into its final quarter, Gunn has provided a bit of a discouraging update on that screenplay.
“The script isn’t done,” Gunn revealed in an interview with The Ringer-Verse. “I mean, we’ve got somebody writing a script, I think it’s really good,” he quickly clarified. And that wasn’t the only downer Gunn dropped.
With it recently becoming crystal clear that Matt Reeves‘ Batman Epic Crime Saga is set outside the DCU’s main continuity and that Robert Pattinson will not be the DCU Batman, Gunn was asked if he had found his Batman yet. The short answer is no.
“Do I have ideas about actors who could play Batman? Absolutely, I do. I have guys I like. I have guys that are top of the list for me, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman,” Gunn said.
“People can guess and maybe they’ll be right about certain things. We’d have to screen test, we’d have to do the whole thing. Okay, I see what you’re doing. ‘1923’, it’s a really good TV show, like I can’t believe how good that show was,” said Gunn, likely referring to rumors that Brandon Sklenar was in the mix for the DCU’ Dark Knight.
Notably, Gunn’s comments about screen tests stand out as in the cases of both Superman and Supergirl, trades caught wind of the DC Studios’ short lists for Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor and Supergirl. It’s safe to assume a role as big as Batman would catch the attention of the trades again. And while that means fans are no closer to finding out who will play Batman, Gunn does know someone who won’t… though he isn’t quite ready to share who that is.
“One actor in particular, a pretty big star, wants to be Batman,” teased Gunn before saying, “we’ve talked about it, but I don’t think that’s the case,” he said.
With so little seemingly working on the right direction and multiple other projects further along in development, it seems as though The Brave and the Bold won’t hit theaters until 2028 or later.
As was the case with Superman, which saw Cleveland become Metropolis, DC Studios is taking great care to make sure its Gotham is FULL of Easter eggs, nods and comic accurate inclusions when it is introduced in Clayface.
Recently, a map of Gotham City was spotted on set, complete with key locations such as Wayne Manor, Ace Chemical, The Monarch Theater, Crime Alley, Arkham and the Kane Memorial Bridge. While it’s unclear if those or any of the locations spotted on the map will factor into the plot of Clayface, it’s the kind of world building necessary to sustain what DC Studios hopes is a long-running narrative in its new, interconnected universe.
As great as it is to see some of Gotham’s most important settings show up on a map, an empty alley or asylum won’t keep Bruce Wayne up at night…but baddies do. And a new prop spotted on the Liverpool set of Clayface confirms that at least one other classic Batman villain has a footprint in Gotham.
Sionis Industries sign on the set of Clayface. The company owned by Roman Sionis, Black Mask.
While there’s no indication as yet he’ll appear in the film, a new BTS Photo Confirms that crime king Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, is active in the all-new, all-different DCU.
Introduced into DC Comics continuity relatively recently in 1985, Sionis has grown incredibly popular over the years. The villain appeared in the Batman: Arkham video game franchise, the CW’s Batwoman and in Birds of Prey, where he was portrayed by Ewan McGregor.
As established in Creature Commandos and Superman, heroes and villains are already deeply established in the DCU and with Gotham having no shortage of baddies, it’s unsurprising to see a Sionis Easter egg; however, given the connection between Matt Hagen’s transformation to Clayface and Gotham’s criminal underworld (and the idea that the film’s villain is still unknown), it’s possible Black Mask may make yet another live-action appearance.
DC Studios first animated feature film, Dynamic Duo, is getting a major overhaul by an Academy Award-nominated pair of writers.
According to The Wrap, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the writing team behind 500 Days of Summer, The Disaster Artist and DaisyJones & the Six, have come on board to rewrite the project, which is currently set to hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
According to The Wrap, Dynamic Duo, which will be directed by Arthur Mintz, will “take place in a separate timeline from his films starring Robert Pattinson and, as we understand it, outside of the current DC Universe canon,” which would then establish it as an “Elseworlds” project.
Originally penned by Coco and Lightyear scribe Matthew Aldrich, Dynamic Duo will tell the story of “the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd aka the Robins. The duo call themselves the Dynamic Duo. They’re orphan thieves, best friends who share dreams of a better life, but their friendship will be tested by competing visions of a future out of which will come a new Dynamic Duo.“
DC Studios will be working with Swaybox, a new and innovative animation studio that uses a “Momo animation” process that Deadline described as “a cross between CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion, and live-action real-time performance.”
In 2020, Liverpool, England was transformed into Gotham as director Matt Reeves filmed scenes for The Batman. Five years later, as production on DC Studios’ Clayface gets underway, Liverpool is once again serving as Gotham City, set this time, however, in the all-new DCU.
As was the case with the DCU’s Superman, which saw Cleveland become Metropolis, DC Studios is taking great care to make sure its Gotham is FULL of Easter eggs, nods and comic accurate inclusions. Most interestingly, a map of Gotham City has been spotted on set and it is complete with key locations such as Wayne Manor, Ace Chemical, The Monarch Theater, Crime Alley, Arkham and the Kane Memorial Bridge.
While this map is unlikely to serve as anything more than something to see in the background, the references to the Joker, the Penguin, Batman and the Kane family stand out as fans get their first look at a Gotham in which the Dark Knight has likely been active for a significant amount of time.
Fans of the comics may note the map is all but identical to the one created in the 1999 Batfamily crossover event, Batman: No Man’s Land. While it’s unlikely that story will be adapted into Clayface, it’s a notable choice as it’s a different map than the one used in The Batman and with fans still searching for reasons to believe Clayface will be set in the Reeves-verse, this may be a strike against that.
After making her debut in Superman, Kara Zor-El is set to lead her own film in 2026. Based on the Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s DC Comic series, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film will see Kara travel the galaxy and ultimately do battle against the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts. And while the movie was originally intended to share a title with King And Bilquis‘ comic, it looks as though that has changed.
A look at a logo for the upcoming movie was spotted on the set of Clayface, the next DCU film in the queue, and it seems to indicate that the original title has been shortened to simply Supergirl.
If the title has indeed been changed, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. DC Studios’ boss James Gunn has been referring to the film as Supergirl for quite some time; additionally, it would be in line with Gunn’s decision to retitle Superman: Legacy by dropping the subtitle and going with Superman.
Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more fucked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.
Described by Gunn as a little more rock and roll than Superman, Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, will be in theaters beginning June 26, 2026.
With DC Studios hosting the red carpet premiere of Season 2 of Peacemaker and Superman debuting on digital platforms this week, James Gunn has spent quite a bit of time in front of the press and he has rarely remained silent in such situations. As such, it was no surprise that he broke some DCU news earlier this week, though the subject caught nearly everyone off guard.
I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga. The treatment’s done–which means a very, very worked out and I’m hopefully going into production on that treatment–and I’m working on that not too far away from today.
-James Gunn
After a recent mention of Gunn’s involvement in a “Super-Family” movie, the DC Studios co-chair revealed he has finished work on a treatment of what he referred to as the next story in the “Superman Saga.” Furthermore, the news that the film would be headed into production “not too far away from today,” certainly turned heads as it could possibly mean a third Superman Family film would be in theaters over a 2 or 3 year span, following this summer’s Superman and next year’s Supergirl. Now, in a new interview with Collider, Gunn has provided some additional information about the treatment and, once again, teased an imminent start of production.
“We’re scheduling it now, ” said Gunn of the production of the new film which will star David Corenswet but will NOT be Superman 2.
“I’m totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They’re not regular treatments. They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything,” Gunn devulged. “And so, now I’m just turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.“
Though no details have been revealed, fans have come to believe that the project may see Kal-El, his cousin, Kara Zor-El, and her dog, Krypto, team up to take on classic Superman baddie Brainiac. Should DC Studios schedule production sometime in 2025–which would align with the idea of “not too far from today”–it wound stand to reason that casting would get underway soon and that more details about the film would begin to make their way online.
James Gunn has always loved hiding Easter Eggs in his superhero films. While some are a little easier to discover, the director famously led fans on a years-long hunt of coded information in the coordinates of locations in Guardians of the Galaxy and hasn’t updated the process in some time. His latest (and perhaps greatest) superhero film, Superman, contained dozens, including a large and lovely mural painted on a wall in the backdrop of a scene set in the Hall of Justice that depicts the history of metahumans in the DCU. Now, after giving fans some time to identify the characters, Gunn has posted high-res images of the mural online, making that task much easier. We’ve chosen to break the characters down in parts, left to right, beginning with those who likely were among the earliest heroes in the DCU.
Sister Symmetry: An Agent of Order in the DC Universe
Sister Symmetry is a powerful and enigmatic figure within the DC Comics pantheon, primarily known as an avatar of the Lords of Order. While not a standalone hero in the traditional sense, her presence signifies the machinations and cosmic influence of these ancient beings who strive to maintain balance and impose structure upon the multiverse.
Her most prominent manifestation in modern DC continuity has been through Madame Xanadu. The mystical Madame Xanadu, a long-lived sorceress and advisor to many of the DC Universe’s magical elite, has at times been forced to serve as a host for Sister Symmetry, typically through the mystical artifact known as the Cloak of Cyra. When adorned with this cloak, Xanadu’s powers and personality are subsumed by the will of Sister Symmetry, turning her into a direct agent of the Lords of Order.
As a representative of the Lords of Order, Sister Symmetry possesses immense magical abilities, often focused on manipulating and controlling existing magical energies rather than creating them. Her powers reflect the essence of order, including:
Precognition and Divination: The ability to foresee events and understand complex magical forces.
Transmutation: The power to alter matter and energy, often to impose a more “ordered” state.
Eldritch Blasts and Elemental Control: Manifestations of raw magical energy and command over natural elements.
Teleportation and Astral Projection: The capacity to traverse vast distances and operate on other planes of existence.
Immortality: As a being tied to the Lords of Order, she transcends mortal limitations.
Sister Symmetry’s appearances are often tied to major magical crises in the DC Universe, particularly those that threaten to unravel the fabric of reality through chaotic forces. Her actions, while sometimes seemingly harsh or unfeeling, are driven by the ultimate goal of preserving order and preventing cosmic collapse.
The Silent Knight: Medieval Might and the Code of Chivalry in the DC Universe
Brian Kent, The Silent Knight,is a unique figure in the annals of DC Comics, standing apart from the costumed heroes and villains of the modern age. Hailing from 6th-century England, he is a chivalrous knight whose adventures are steeped in the lore of King Arthur and the age of legendary quests. His most distinctive trait, as his name suggests, is his vow of silence, a self-imposed penance for a past mistake or a dedication to his knightly duties.
Created by Robert Kanigher and Irv Novick, the Silent Knight first appeared in Brave and the Bold #1 (1955). While he operates in a historical setting, the Silent Knight’s connection to the broader DC Universe sometimes subtly emerges. He exists in a world where magic is real and powerful, and sometimes faces threats that hint at connections to larger mystical forces. Though not directly interacting with modern heroes, his existence enriches the DC tapestry by demonstrating that heroism transcends time periods and different forms of “costumed” identity.
The Silent Knight possesses no inherent superpowers, but he is a master of medieval combat and strategy. His formidable skills include:
Exceptional Swordsmanship: He is an unparalleled swordsman, capable of defeating multiple opponents with his broadsword.
Master Horseman and Jouster: Highly skilled in mounted combat, he is a formidable opponent in jousts and charges.
Skilled Archer: Though primarily a melee fighter, he is also proficient with a longbow.
Tactician and Strategist: He often outmaneuvers his foes through clever planning and understanding of battlefield dynamics.
Unwavering Moral Compass: His strict adherence to his knightly vows and code of chivalry often serves as his greatest strength, guiding his actions with honor and integrity.
The Silent Knight serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic heroism and the foundational ideals of courage, justice, and self-sacrifice, proving that a true hero can emerge in any era, with or without a word. As part of a modern retcon Kent is now believed to have been. one of the many past lives of Carter Hall, aka Hawkman.
Exoristos: The Exiled Amazon of the Demon Knights
Exoristos is a compelling and formidable character introduced to the DC Universe as part of the “New 52” relaunch, primarily featuring in the medieval-set series Demon Knights. Her name itself, “Exoristos,” means “exile” in Greek, directly reflecting her background as an Amazon warrior cast out from her homeland.
First appearing in Demon Knights #1 (2011), Exoristos is a powerful Amazon who, unlike many of her Themysciran sisters, roams the world during the Dark Ages. Her reason for exile is a key mystery of her character, and it profoundly shapes her worldview and interactions with others. She’s often portrayed as a pragmatic, sometimes cynical, and fiercely independent warrior.
Exoristos becomes a central member of the titular Demon Knights, an unlikely assemblage of immortal and super-powered individuals brought together to defend a small town from a powerful magical assault. This team includes other notable DC figures such as Etrigan the Demon (and his human host Jason Blood), Madame Xanadu, Vandal Savage, the Shining Knight (Sir Ystin), and Al Jabr. Her interactions within this diverse group often highlight her unique perspective as an Amazon navigating a less civilized and more brutal world.
As an Amazon, Exoristos possesses a formidable array of enhanced physical attributes and warrior training:
Superhuman Strength: She possesses immense strength, easily capable of overpowering multiple human foes, battling mythical creatures, and even stopping a giant rhino with a sledgehammer.
Superhuman Durability: Exoristos is highly resistant to injury, able to withstand blows that would kill ordinary humans.
Enhanced Stamina: She can exert herself at peak physical levels for extended periods without tiring.
Master Combatant: Trained in the Amazonian tradition, she is an expert in various forms of armed and unarmed combat. She is proficient with swords, axes, and other medieval weaponry.
Skilled Tactician: Beyond raw power, Exoristos demonstrates strategic thinking and battlefield awareness.
Exoristos embodies the Amazonian warrior spirit, but her exile and experiences in the brutal medieval world have also instilled in her a grounded, sometimes weary wisdom. Her story explores themes of belonging, the consequences of ideals, and the ongoing struggle for justice in a harsh world, making her a standout character from the Demon Knights series.
The Black Pirate: Swashbuckling Justice on the High Seas of History
The Black Pirate, primarily Jon Valor, is a classic DC Comics character who brings the adventurous spirit of the Golden Age of Piracy to the comic book page. Created by Sheldon Moldoff, he first appeared in Action Comics #23 in 1940, establishing himself as a unique hero operating centuries before the advent of modern superheroes.
A 16th-century English privateer, Valor, under the guise of the Black Pirate, uses his skills and ship to fight for justice and challenge tyranny on the high seas and in the burgeoning nations of Europe. Unlike many of the more villainous pirates of popular culture, Valor operates with a strong moral code. He is essentially a freedom fighter, using his buccaneering skills to aid the oppressed and punish the corrupt.
The Black Pirate’s stories are characterized by their historical setting, emphasizing swordsmanship, sailing prowess, and a sense of derring-do. He is often accompanied by his son, Justin, who serves as his loyal, if sometimes impetuous, sidekick.
While primarily a historical character, Jon Valor has had a notable posthumous influence in modern DC Comics. His ghost played an important role in James Robinson’s acclaimed Starman series, where he helped Jack Knight in his quest. This appearance highlighted the lasting legacy of heroism across time periods within the DC Universe. His grandson, Jack Valor, has also taken up the mantle of the Black Pirate in more contemporary stories.
The Black Pirate possesses no superpowers but is an exceptionally skilled and resourceful human:
Master Swordsman: Jon Valor is an expert with a cutlass and other blades, capable of engaging and defeating multiple opponents.
Exceptional Sailor and Navigator: He is a brilliant ship captain, possessing an innate understanding of naval strategy, seamanship, and navigation.
Highly Skilled Tactician: He can devise clever plans to outwit his enemies and lead his crew effectively in various situations.
Acrobatic and Agile: His life at sea and in combat has made him remarkably agile, capable of swinging, climbing, and performing feats of physical prowess.
Keen Intellect: He is a shrewd observer and a capable detective, often uncovering hidden motives and solving complex problems.
The Black Pirate serves as a timeless emblem of adventure and justice, demonstrating that heroism is not confined to any single era, and that a strong moral compass, combined with skill and courage, can make a significant difference in the face of oppression. His recent appearance in a mural in the Hall of Justice in the new Superman film further solidifies his place as an enduring figure in the DC pantheon.
