Dolph Lundgren Sets the Record Straight on ‘Creed’ Spinoff

You’d think the announcement of a Drago spinoff focusing on the father-son duo by the same name spinning out of Creed would mostly have a positive place in media coverage. Yet, it seems that it hit quite a soft spot with Rocke himself, Sylvester Stallone who publicly spoke out against the franchise’s producers due to a rights ownership discrepancy. Now, Dolph Lundgren has “set the record straight” in regards to what exactly is going on and that he’s also in touch with Stallone in an interview with Variety.

Just to set the record straight regarding a possible ‘Drago’ spinoff. There’s no approved script, no deals in place, no director and I was personally under the impression that my friend Sly Stallone was involved as a producer or even as an actor. There was a press leak last week which was unfortunate. In touch with Mr. Balboa – just so all the fans can relax…There ya go.

So, it does seem it’s in very early stages and it may not happen given the circumstances; at least not with the returning cast. Plot details remain uncertain and if there’s no approved script, it might be in a very early stage of development. So, we’ll have to see how or when this project even comes together. It’s good to see that Lundgren is in touch with Stallone and offers some insights, as the former Rocky star has pointed to the producers of the franchise as “parasites” in a recent Instagram post. He’s actively condemned the Winkler family in the past and it’s interesting

Sylvester Stallone Speaks Out Against ‘Creed’ Spinoff to Double Down on ‘Rocky’ Right Issues

The Rocky franchise is growing, and series star Sylvester Stallone isn’t happy about it. It was announced recently that MGM would be developing a spin-off film centered around the infamous Drago family, with Dolph Lundgren and Florian Munteanu reprising their father-son roles as Russian fighters Ivan and Viktor Drago from Rocky IV and Creed 2, respectively. Robert Lawton is set to write the script, with Irwin and David Winkler producing. Stallone, who has been actively involved with the creative process of nearly every Rocky and Creed installment, will seemingly not be part of the project.

The actor took to his Instagram just days ago to confirm some beef between himself and the Winkler family, calling David Winklerpainfully untalented” and his father Irwinparasitical”. There is apparently an ongoing dispute between Stallone and the Winklers over the rights to Rocky, with the former claiming that the latter is holding hostage what should be his. The announcement of Drago only further set Stallone off, with the 80s icon returning to his social media for another vicious takedown:

Stallone is best remembered as the lead role in the Rocky films, but the creative also wrote every installment and directed all but two of the films. He also helped co-write the first two Creed movies. The upcoming third Creed will be the first without his direct contributions, although his role as producer indicates the project is happening with his blessing.

    ‘Creed’ Spinoff in Development

A new Creed spinoff is in the works. The Wrap has revealed that screenwriter Robert Lawton has been brought on by MGM to write a spinoff titled Drago. The spinoff will focus on Dolph Lundgren’s Drago, as well as his son, Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), who appeared in the second Creed film. Further details regarding the film are unknown at the moment.

Lawton previously wrote a spec script titled Becoming Rocky that focused on the making of the first Rocky film. That script would later go on to be one of fifty to win a Nicholl Fellowship in 2021. After MGM execs read the script, they were impressed and ultimately gave him the job.

Lundgren briefly teased a Drago film in an interview with THR last year. The actor mentioned that there was talk about a spinoff focuses on his character over at MGM, but nothing had been set in stone at that point. Now that the project has been officially announced, it’s likely the studio will move to look for a director in the coming months.

The news of the Drago spinoff comes as Rocky and Creed star, Sylvester Stallone, has been vocal about trying to retain some of the rights to the franchise. Last week, the actor took to social media to express his frustrations with producers Irwin Winkler and his son David Winkler. The actor felt he deserved some ownership of Rocky, noting that he had “zero ownership” of the character despite creating and writing on all six films. Stallone has since deleted his posts calling for rights to the franchise, so it’s unclear if a deal has since been reached.

A third Creed film recently wrapped production and saw leading man Michael B. Jordan step behind the camera as the director for the threequel. That film is slated to hit theaters on Nov. 23rd, 2022.
