Though it hasn’t set the world on fire critically or financially, Fast X will have not one but two sequels released theatrically to wrap up the central series of the Fast franchise. Prior to the mid-May release of Fast X, it was believed that the series would wrap with whatever nonsensical title the studio could come up with for the eleventh entry; however, the big rawry engine behind the series, one Vincent Diesel, revealed a 12th film would be needed to complete the story of THE family. Now, as Fast X hits the downslope of its theatrical run,Vin has decided to reveal the release date of the next “effort” in the franchise.
Via his Instagram, Diesel let it slip that Fast 11 will hit theaters on April 4th, 2025. According to the Pacifier’s math, that date is “less than 22 months away.” The Knockaround Guy promised fans that much like the entirety of the franchise, the eleventh entry will be an event “like you have never seen.” Given the mediocre box office of Fast X, it’s possible that the eleventh film could just be a rerelease of that film which most of the world has “never seen.”
It looks like TheLittle Mermaid is going to continue the box office performance of Disney’s live-action adaptations of their beloved animated classics. While the internet continues to groan about the existence of taking an iconic animated fair and trying to put a realistic lens over it (as much as possible, poor Flounder), it does seem like audiences are continuing to eat it up as much as they can. The film pulled in a mighty $30M on Saturday after a $38M on Friday (including previews), which is on par with the Aladdin adaptation and is on its path to a strong Memorial Day weekend.
As of now, it seems that the film will pull in around $97M+ in three days and wrap up the four-day weekend at $121M+. It seems the film boasted an 80M-worth global promo partnership that makes it one of the biggest for a non-Lucasfilm or Marvel Cinematic Universe cooperation. After being quite absent throughout the early parts of the year, it seems families are finally going back to theaters. That A CinemaScore is definitely also doing its job for strong word-of-mouth.
Fast X is losing quite a bit of speed, as it is dropping around 67% in its second 3-day weekend which would rival any of the previous Marvel entries from the previous years. That on a soft $67.5M hurts far more than any of the frontloaded Marvel movies and perhaps continues to showcase that the current superhero fatigue is likely more than meets the eye given Transformers‘ latest entry isn’t coming in as hot as one would hope for such a mega tentpole franchise.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still hanging in there with a strong 26.6M over the four-day weekend. That’s just a 36% drop and further highlights that it’s all about keeping fans coming back to theaters. While some will call this an exception to the rule, the film still opened softer and positive word-of-mouth will keep the genre kicking. If The Flash manages to pull in a strong audience, it’ll also carry over into November’s release of The Marvels and so forth.
Overall though, counterprogramming for this week isn’t doing what it should do as Machine and About My Father are falling a bit short. They both highlight the issue that grew out of the pandemic’s streaming focus that hit big films as well with mixed word-of-mouth scores: there’s a strong distinction between “what I’ll watch in theaters” and “I’ll wait to check it out on streaming eventually” mentalities than ever before. Big thank you to Disney+’s 45-day release window and Warner Bros.’ day-and-date strategy for that.
It looks like Fast X is still making a splash internationally, as while it didn’t beat the previous entry domestically, it has revved up quite a bit of momentum at the global box office. It highlights that some franchises may face their own slowdown but that isn’t always the case for every single market, especially with how some viewed the international development in Eastern markets for MArvel Studios’ more sci-fi-oriented filmmaking in the last few years.
Still, Fast X has pulled in $318.9M worldwide, which is a good start even if it only pulled in $67.5M domestically. The international bow makes it the second largest release of the year with The Super Mario Bros. Movie still holding on to the top spot at $377M. Though, it is the third-highest opening for a Fast and Furious film. Still, it had the biggest international opening of any film so far.
The film actually had an impressive opening in China at $78.3M, which after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also surprised might be a hopeful sign that the market is warming up to external films again. Though domestically, the film received a B+ CinemaScore, which commonly hints at a more positive but mixed reception and it is a lower opening than F9 during the pandemic.
There is, however, one major issue this film is going to face and that is its hefty production budget. While during the pandemic many film budgets have spiraled out of control with the old $200M now hovering around $250M, Fast X has a bit of a bigger challenge ahead. Even with a massive opening this year, the film has to make quite a bit of cash due to costing $340M.
That means, the film would have to make at least $640M just to cover its production budget and potentially around $850M to be considered profitable. while its international legs could be a factor, it’s still a long way to know if this film was worth its investment. To put it in perspective, the film costs more than Avengers: Infinity War and 10M less than Avatar: The Way of Water. So, the second weekend will be vital to see how far the franchise’s engine truly will run.
It’s looking more and more like blockbuster fatigue is showing its fangs, as even the latest entry of the Fast & Furious franchise, Fast X, is kicking off its domestic run softly. Louis Leterrier is directing the latest entry in the franchise that came in with a soft B+, which means the action hit is getting some mixed reviews from audiences. It’s the same grade that F9 got previously during the pandemic but it’ll be curious to keep an eye on what this means for its box office.
The film took in $27.5M and is currently 8% behind F9. With a B+ score, it seems like the film is likely going to roll out around $66M over the weekend. That of course isn’t great with Vin Diesel recently trying to promote that he’s decided they’ll spin out a trilogy out of Fast X, which originally was setting up the final entry to the franchise. It’s hard to say if the two-year wait and the overall soft embrace of the previous entry may have played a key factor in its box office.
Outside of Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, big releases have been struggling a bit this year. The latter is also showing another stronghold with a 46% drop even going up against this direct competition from Universal. Mid-budget investments have performed better than expected in April as people were preparing for the summer, but perhaps we’re about to face an average 100M opening moving forward with the franchise going above or below depending on the marketing push behind, as even former franchise giant, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, is only projecting around a $40M opening weekend.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has given Marvel Studios one of its best second weekends in a long-time, hoping to secure a bit more positive momentum for the franchise moving forward after bigger drops throughout the last year. Its first real competition is about to arrive with Fast X, the latest entry in the Fast & Furious franchise. While some have been praising it online, Fast X has opened to a soft 60% reviews on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
With a soft start critically, it seems that projections for its box office opening are a bit mellow going in, at least domestically. Projects have the film opening around $65M, which is quite a bit lower than what you’d expect from the tenth entry of a major film franchise. It would place it slightly lower than F9: The Fast Saga which opened to $70M during the pandemic back in 2021.
Though, these films have a knack for massive international appeal. Current projects say that domestically it may only be around $60M but international release might go haywire at $235M. As such, it would be the third-best global release for the franchise. That also would put the film in similar shoes like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s openings.
What is pushing the film is opening in 81 markets including the always highly coveted China release While the market has been unreliable for Western releases, it still surprised many in how it’s currently pushing Guardians 3’s box office, which is still set to make around $33M if it keeps up the strong word-of-mouth. There’s a chance that it might also still keep some of its audience and keep Fast X at bay, but the weekend will tell.
With the passing of the social media embargo for Universal’s latest installment in the Fast & The Furious franchise, Fast X, but expiring yesterday, journalists and critics who attended early screenings of the film began rolling out their opinions. Though the first wave of reactions indicate that Fast X may be a bit disappointing to fans of the high-octane franchise, most everyone agrees that a new addition stole the show.
Jason Momoa joined the franchise as Dante Reyes, the son of Fast 5 Hernan Reyes who was killed by Dwayne Johnson‘s Hobbs. And while he might be playing Reyes, it sounds like Momoa is really just letting all his Momoaness out in Fast X. Forbes critic Simon Thompson says Momoa’s “perilous peacocking” stands out in the “stupidly entertaining” sequel.

Cinema Blend’s Eric Rosenberg compared Momoa’s Reyes to the Joker, calling him ” a gleeful psychopath” and part of the reason the film gets the franchise “back on track.”
io9 veteran critic Germain Lussier joined in singing Momoa’s praises, saying his performance is “God-level.” However, Lussier was much less impressed with Fast X, calling it “the worst” film in the series.

Though she enjoyed the film, Acuna also noted that Fast X is a mid-tier Fast franchise entry while also boarding the Momoa praise train.
As far as how it compares to the rest of the franchise? I need another watch to solidify where I’d place it. Think it may be right in the middle of the franchise or a little higher in my ranking. The original, Fast Five, and Furious 7, are still better.
Given Momoa’s charismatic Reyes is drawing such rave reviews and the film is likely to continue to ludicrous, over-the-top action fans have embraced, Fast X is likely to be a hit when it opens in theaters May 19th!
You can always count on Vin Diesel’s enthusiasm to keep a franchise going even as everyone else expects it to wrap up. Originally, The Fast Saga was announced to wrap up with its upcoming eleventh film as production started on Fast X which would set up the final entry. There has been speculation these two films are more of a “Part 1” and “Part 2” deal, but it seems that Diesel has expanded upon his idea.
On the red carpet for Fast X, the franchise’s main star has seemingly confirmed that the last entry is no longer setting up the final part but rather is the first of a three-part finale. So, it seems we are getting a trilogy to wrap up the mainline Fast Saga even if there’s a good chance he may just expand upon it if this is his way of promoting a new entry into the car-driven action franchise.

It’s certainly a bizarre move as they made quite a big deal out of wrapping it up with these upcoming two films. There’s no word if director Louis Letterier will also return for the sequels after the fallout that occurred on production with original Fast X director Justin Lin. The film already has to make up a lot of money for the delays that occurred due to Lin’s exit and who knows how long this franchise will keep the engine going.
Louis Leterrier is staying with the Fast family. Variety announced on Wednesday that the director will direct Fast and Furious 11, which will serve as a companion film for Fast X and the final film in the long-running franchise. Leterrier, of course, stepped in as the director for Fast X after Justin Lin left the project last May.

Under his direction, ‘Fast X’ is a high-intensity thriller with all the spectacular action, emotion, and twists that the fans have come to expect – and then some. Outside of Fast X, Leterrier has directed Transporter starring Jason Statham, Clash of the Titans, and Now You See Me. As for his credits on the small screen, Leterrier has worked on Lupin, as well as The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
To date, the Fast and Furious franchise has earned an impressive $6 billion at the worldwide box office. It has even gone on to spawn a spinoff film, Hobbs & Shaw, starring Statham and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The Super Bowl has once again arrived and did its usual thing by squeezing a lot of money out of advertisers for the chance of getting the most views they possibly could for their product. Of course, it’s also a big opportunity for studios to showcase some of their upcoming big releases. This year had some of the biggest films of 2023 included such as The Flash, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, and more.
In a big and exciting development, it seems that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally broke a pre-pandemic record of pulling in more than 100M views within 24 hours after premiering at the Super Bowl. It’s even beaten Marvel Studios’ own Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which pulled a still impressive 93.1M views last year. And that is quite a move considering its also their second released trailer. It’s impressive and a good sign of the summer blockbuster push.
The Flash wasn’t too far behind, as it managed to pull in an impressive 97.4M, which is also major considering Warner Bros. was more of a sideline during these events. So, they returned with quite a bang but were also closely followed by Fast X’s 94.1M views within 24 hours on Social Media. The latter does also have the added effect that they where the only one of the top three to drop the trailer in advance.
13 trailers were dropped during the Super Bowl with the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Heineken collaboration also pulling in the fourth highest viewing with 87.9M. It may be facing some critical backlash but interest is definitely there for the film and the collab may have been a clever way to sneak in a second preview for Marvel Studios. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was a bit further behind with 43.3M, a surprisingly soft starter considering how big its initial trailer drop was.
Disney’s other major release, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny also were on the smaller side at 34.2M, but it also didn’t really include much new footage in its release outside of a few lines. It’s still some time away and the buzz may not be as big, but it’s still curious to think that the return of Harrison Ford wouldn’t have brought more buzz with it. It’s also not first-party data from studios but measured through RelishMix, which also can vary depending on its data basis. Still, it seems superheroes are still quite attractive going by public viewings.
2023 is set to be a wild year at the box office. The month of March alone features four major theatrical releases and none of those are from Marvel, DC or include Tom Cruise! Team MM got together to share each of their most anticipated films of the new year!
Torbjorn Frazier
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is my most anticipated film of the year. The notion of now 80-year-old Harrison Ford leading an action-heavy film is, if nothing else, wildly fascinating and will likely make for a compelling spectacle regardless of its quality. As well, Phoebe Waller-Bridge being part of a marquee cinematic film is only a good thing in my eyes and should automatically elevate the quality going in. And of course, Dial of Destiny will mark the final film score of the legendary figure John Williams, a fact of massive importance to any fan of music in film. No matter what though, the film certainly would have to have a lot go wrong for it to be worse than Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The greatest film of all time is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, so how could I not be excited for the sequel? There’s a lot of amazing stuff coming this year, but nothing is going to top another animated Spidey movie for me. Peak cinema.

Most excited for Creed III. Jonathan Majors is doing great work right now so it’ll be fun to see his energy up against Michael B. Jordan. Jordan’s last few outings felt slightly stale, so if he can do good work behind the camera, maybe he’ll find a second wind there. The only downside is Sylvester Stallone not being involved, so I’d love for this film to still be successful so Jordan can create another lane for them to work together or even muscle the overall IP away. Fingers crossed for the latter and maybe Stallone can get his work back.
MTF III
Pass me a Corona and unearth a long-lost or presumed dead family member (Brie Larsen is definitely playing Brian’s sister, right?), but the DVD thieves turned masters of international vehicular mayhem are back, and I’m living for their return, a quarter mile at a time. Justin Lin’s absence gives me some pause, but mostly, after seeing the gang go to space in the last one, I need to see how they top themselves with this movie’s central stunt.

No film on the docket for 2023 has me as excited as Indy 5. Something feels more magical about this one and seeing Harrison Ford in action as Henry Jones Jr. will always be appealing to me. James Mangold put together a nostalgia-driven trailer that makes it seem like he understood his assignment here and put together a fun last ride for Indy.

House Party, because I grew up on Kid & Play, and, dammit, the reboots of Fresh Prince and Saved By The Bell were money. For a long time, reboots were just ways to cash in, but the last couple of years have seen much more quality efforts being put out, and House Party is set up to be no different. The premise is exciting (they’re partying at LeBron’s house!?), the cast has some exciting young talent, and I’m always going to support more representation in films. Super pumped for this one!

There is quite a list of exciting projects to look forward to in 2023. It’s almost impossible to truly nail down a scenario if one only has the choice to watch one film, but there is one project I am extremely excited about: the new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, Mutant Mayhem. As of now, we know very little about what the project has to offer and only got a logo tease and its cast. With the co-writer of The Mitchells vs. the Machines and a Gravity Falls veteran attached to direct, this film could become one of the best-animated entries of 2023. And that’s saying something with the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the same year.

James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy movies are one of the best releases to date. Everything from the writing to visuals, the movies are miles ahead of other comic book media. Even though they don’t compare with the best movies out there, I am most hyped for the threequel because it will feature a galaxy of fan-favorite characters, from Star-Lord to Groot. It will also introduce us to new characters such as Adam Warlock and The High Evolutionary.
The Guardians are a family, which we don’t see much of in other 2023 blockbusters. Watching this family ever since 2014 makes this movie an emotional goodbye. Other factors which affected my choice were the fact that most of the other movies haven’t released any promotional footage, and that I’m very biased toward the MCU!

My most anticipated film of 2023? It’s not Marvel or DC! It’s the long-awaited follow-up from mastermind director, Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part 2. The 2021 installment gave us stunning visuals, a masterful score, and thoughtful, inspired casting. Plus, I can’t wait to meet the sociopathic Feyd-Rautha Villeneuve has in store for us. It’s sure to be a masterpiece.
