‘Black Adam’ Director Says the Film Avoids Hawkman’s Complicated Origin Story

Black Adam is the next film to be released in the DC Extended Universe, and many fans are excited to see Dwayne Johnson’s portrayal of the titular superhero. Alongside Black Adam himself, the film is set to introduce to live-action the Justice Society of America and some of its classic members. Director Jaume Collett-Serra confirmed to Vanity Fair that, in Black Adam, Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) is the leader of the JSA, whose members on-screen will also include Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan).

With Hawkman in such a significant role, one wonders how Black Adam planned to handle the character’s infamously complicated and confusing origin story. Multiple versions of Hawkman have been published, primarily two different versions. One version hails from Earth and is rooted in reincarnation, and the other is a police officer from another planet. Eventually the two distinct characters were merged and further complicated down the line. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Collett-Serra revealed that the upcoming film will avoid Hawkman’s backstory for this very reason. He stated:

In the comics, there are clear references of like, ‘Hey, I saw you 5,000 years ago. You remember me?’ We’re not doing that…It would be too confusing. Obviously, Hawkman reincarnates, so how many times do you need to reincarnate and still remember? All these rules [are something] you don’t want to set until those characters are really established…He is a very driven character that knows that he’s on the right side. He’s a leader. He wants to bring this team together, and bring a certain stability to the world. Hawkman has a very strong sense of what’s right or wrong, and Black Adam challenges that.”

Considering Black Adam is designed to be a solo film for Johnson’s character and an introduction to the JSA, there could be plenty of time for DC to explore Hawkman’s origin more thoroughly in the future. Still, fans of the character should not get their hopes up to see it laid out in Black Adam.

  • New ‘Black Adam’ Promo Art Offers a Closer Look at Hawkman’s Full Design

New ‘Black Adam’ Promo Art Offers a Closer Look at Hawkman’s Full Design

It looks like more promotional art has found its way from Black Adam. While a big highlight of these visuals was in the form of the titular character as well as offering a tease of the upcoming silver screen debut of the Justice Society of America. While the JSA has some iconic members and we got our first look ahead of the recent trailer drop through Funko Pops, it does seem like new promotional material has surfaced, as shared by Twitter user @TaurooAldebaran.

What stands out this time around is we get a new wingless look at Hawkman. Aldis Hodge is taking on the task of bringing the iconic JSA member to the silver screen and it finally gives us a confirmation of his iconic battle mace. He also seemingly will have a shield that’ll definitely help him in his fight against Black Adam that was teased in earlier promotional material.

We still know very little about the film and the trailer has seemingly stuck to only teasing a small part of the overarching story. It does try to paint the picture that the JSA is going to face off against Adam, but it does seem like there are other threats in the future, especially one with their different ideologies. Still, his overall design is great and we can’t wait to see more of Hodge‘s Hawkman when the film releases later this year.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Hawkman Armor

‘Black Adam’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Hawkman Armor

After years in development hell, the Black Adam solo film has finally been set into motion, with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. With the film now in post-production, it’s poised to have quite a large appearance at DC Fandome with most of the leading cast in attendance for the event. We’re eager to get our first real look at the film after the brief teases Fandome gave us last year, like our first looks at the Justice Society of America suited up and the fallen champion himself, Black Adam in action.

New leaked photos from the production of Black Adam have given us the best look yet at Black Adam’s suit and also some of Hawkman’s armor like his iconic golden-winged helmet and his harness that features some bold pauldrons as well as some belt straps. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from these photos is the first look at Teth-Adam’s champion suit, looking strikingly similar to Supermans Kryptonian suit with the hieroglyphics detailing. The suit does seem to be a bit grayer than it is black, but could just be touched up in post.

This year’s DC Fandome event will hopefully give us an official look at the characters and their suits in a sort of “Roll Call”, like what The Suicide Squad did last year. Dwayne Johnson, Quintessa Swindel, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Pierce Brosnan will all be in attendance for the Black Adam panel where we should see a much deeper dive into the film than we did last year.

  • ‘BLACK ADAM’ Eyeing Alexander Skarsgard for Hawkman

‘BLACK ADAM’ Eyeing Alexander Skarsgard for Hawkman

DC FanDome will bring us quite a lot of news on upcoming DC projects. Among the schedule reveals, we got confirmation that Black Adam will finally get some spotlight. As such, we might finally get more details on the upcoming project. We have some ideas of what the Dwayne Johnson film might have in store for us. Just a few days ago, our very own Charles Muprhy had discussed rumbling surrounding the film. In it, he highlights that they might be narrowing down who will play the iconic Hawkman. Now, Illuminerdi revealed that they are currently eyeing none other than Alexander Skarsgard to play the character.

The Emmy-winner would be a great choice. With an inevitable clash between Hawkman and Black Adam, it makes sense to cast someone who could stand toe-to-toe with Johnson. Illuminerdi does point out that they are also considering Sam Heughan, who played Jamie Fraser in Outlander for the role. Still, Skarsgard is the current frontrunner for Warner Bros. and it only depends on his interest in joining the film.

It will be interesting if they can finalize a deal in time for the upcoming FanDome event. Hawkman a.k.a. Carter Hall is such an interesting character to explore. He has strong ties to Egypt due to the reincarnation cycle, so they can explore Black Adam’s relationship with him before being faced with his inevitable rebirth. With all the news recently coming out, I cannot wait to see what DC FanDome has in store for us all.

  • ‘BLACK ADAM’ Surprises in Store for DC FanDome

‘BLACK ADAM’ Surprises in Store for DC FanDome

The full schedule for next Saturday’s DC FanDome was revealed today and on first glance it truly looks to be a spectacular event, almost too full of great panels, that will give fans a big boost as the COVID-19 pandemic presses on. Of all the scheduled events, the one that caught my eye will be taking place in the Hall of Heroes at 6:00 PM EST when Dwayne Johnson is set to appear in a Black Adam panel with some surprises tossed in. What kind of surprises might be in store? Let the speculation begin.

    Landing a Hawkman

    Hawkman | DC

The most obvious and most anticipated bunch of surprises would come from adding to the cast. As of now, only the film’s star, Johnson, and Noah Centineo, set to play JSA member Atom Smasher, have been announced. That means there are plenty of roles left to be filled but it’s the role of Carter Hall/Hawkman that’s going to make or break this movie. The studio has been searching for a while now but rumors swirled recently that they had narrowed down their search. We know they want someone physically imposing who could appear to be able to tussle with the Rock (let’s be honest, you’re going to have one hell of a time finding that guy given Dwayne’s commitment to fitness) but also someone with a timeless quality to them. Hard to do all that, but you could see someone the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Joel Kinnaman (who, apparently, is a hot super hero commodity right now) or Alexander Skarsgard pop up in the panel, turning up the hype on this one even more.

    The Villain

Ibac (disambiguation) | DC Database | Fandom

While the film is certainly going to see Black Adam and Hawkman come to blows, it’s unlikely that Hawkman would be the film’s true antagonist meaning there’s one big piece of the puzzle missing. I’ve heard rumblings for a while now about what type of villain the studio wants and, unsurprisingly, it seems it’ll be someone who can match Teth-Adam’s longevity. At first this sounds a lot like Vandal Savage and he would be a great pick but there’s another character whose recent retcon might make him THE perfect bad guy. The New 52 gave a new story to a character named Ibac and that story could tie right into this film. Originally, Ibac was just a guy named Stanley Printwhistle who, like Billy Batson, could say a name and be imbued with magical powers. The retcon turned him into a barbarian warlord, Ibac the First, who conquered and enslaved the people of Khandaq, killing Teth-Adam’s family in the process. Black Adam had his vengeance on Ibac only to later come to blows with a descendant. With some careful crafting, Black Adam could tell the tale of the barbarian Ibac and bring the original character back to life as well granting him the magical powers of IBAC (based on some of history’s greatest warlords), making him a better match for Black Adam.

There are certain to be more cast announcements and surprises, but these two really stand out among the potential crowd given how they’ll define the public’s perception of the film going into production. What else are you hoping to hear next week?
