Jack Kesy to Star in ‘Hellboy: The Crooked Man’

Jack Kesy is set to star in the latest Hellboy reboot for Millennium Media. The news was announced on Thursday, with Deadline confirming that the actor will play the titular role with production set to begin in a few months. As of now, Kesy is the only actor attached to the project, but additional casting is currently underway.

Regarding the casting of Kesy, Millennium Media co-president Jonathan Yunger expressed his excitement over seeing the actor introduce a younger take on the comics character. “Jack Kesy is a dynamic actor who has the ability to morph into his roles. His talent and stature are perfect for this younger Hellboy. I was very impressed with him while working together on The Outpost.”

Kesy is perhaps best known for his roles in movies such as Deadpool 2, Death Wish, and Blood Brother. On the television side, he has appeared in shows like Claws and The Alienist. He can currently be seen in Lionsgate’s Dark Web: Cicadia 3301.

News of the Hellboy reboot first surfaced in February when Millennium Media announced the project in Berlin. Crank director Brian Taylor is helming the project from a screenplay penned by Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola and Chris Golden. The Crooked Man will serve as the first film in Millennium’s slate with Telepool. As of now, there is no release date set for the project.

  • First Production Details for Millenium’s Second ‘Hellboy’ Reboot

First Production Details for Millenium’s Second ‘Hellboy’ Reboot

It hasn’t been easy for Hellboy. The franchise was made a Hollywood staple with its two films directed by Guillermo del Toro, which sadly wasn’t as big of a box office success as they were able to finish their trilogy. So, they gave it another shot in 2019 with David Harbour taking over the role popularized by Ron Perlman. Now, Millenium Media is ready to give it another shot with the upcoming adaptation under the title Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

Brian Taylor of Crank fame will be directing the film and they are already eyeing a production start in Bulgaria next month. It seems that no one has been cast just yet but they do seem to be in the final stages of finding their cast. Comics creator Mike Mignola is also involved with the project and even wrote the script alongside Chris Golden, who is his comic collaborator for Dark Horse. They promise the story will “expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.” Surprisingly, this is the first time that Mignola is involved with the film franchise.

The adaptation is inspired by the 2008 comic, which was released around the time Hellboy 2: The Golden Army found its way into theaters. Millenium took over the rights for the iconic character back in 2018 and they are hoping to establish a new franchise with this entry. No, not just a trilogy but going for multiple films even after the disappointment that was the 2019 reboot; something David Harbour jokes about as something that still haunts him to this day.

Third time’s a charm… hopefully. After a 2019 reboot of Hellboy led by David Harbour failed to catch on, the character is getting new, new life in another live-action film.

Discussing Film broke the news that Brian Taylor (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) will helm the new Hellboy film for Millennium Media. It seems that the new film may adapt 2011’s three issue miniseries, Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

The report indicates that the script for the film ready to go and that filming is slated to kick off in April.

  • Ron Perlman Still Wants ‘Hellboy 3’ To Happen

Ron Perlman Still Wants ‘Hellboy 3’ To Happen

It has been nearly fourteen years since the release of Guillermo del Toro‘s last Hellboy movie, The Golden Army. In that time, several attempts have been made to continue the franchise with a third installment, but nothing has ever panned out. The series was eventually rebooted in 2019 with Neil Marshall‘s Hellboy, which was far less well-received and seemingly brought the idea of more live-action films to a sudden halt. Despite all of this, and maybe against his own better judgement, del Toro’s former leading man Ron Perlman is remaining all-in on the idea of a Hellboy 3.

In a recent interview with Variety, the Sons of Anarchy star spoke about the potential of returning for another Hellboy project. While he admits he may have aged out of the role, he still thinks a third del Toro film is possible, and he very much still wants it to happen.

Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f—g years old. [But] we owe this to the fans, and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion. So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f—g thing done.

If Lionsgate were to bite, it wouldn’t be the first time a franchise returned to it’s original creatives after a failed reboot attempt. Ghostbusters recently tried the same maneuver, with mixed results. However, an “Old Man Hellboy” story may have a better shot at success. David Harbour, who took over the title role from Perlman, has publicly stated his belief that the remake was received poorly because it could never live up to del Toro’s version of the character in audiences’ minds. While the acclaimed director may not be able to make a new Hellboy anytime soon, perhaps the pure fan loyalty will someday help a new project get off the ground.
