    ‘Invincible’: The Power of Escalation

Superhero shows tend to go in different directions. We’ve seen their stories evolve from their child-friendly roots to embracing more adult themes. This evolution of storytelling led to Jessica Jones changing the landscape of female storytelling. Frank Miller‘s take on Batman in The Dark Knight Returns showed us a dystopian Gotham haunted by its failures. Yet, there persists an aspect of the franchise that makes it accessible for anyone in the world. Marvel Studios found a way to create an ever-expanding universe that can offer light-hearted stories alongside geopolitical thrillers. DC is taking a different approach by telling stories in different ways, may it be Joker‘s attempt at an avant-garde project or Aquaman embracing the silliness. The Boys took a different approach by completely embracing its R-rating. We’re seeing a curious development with Amazon’s second superhero project, an adaptation of Robert Kirkman‘s Invincible.

Keep in mind, I will be discussing the first three episodes in this article. If you haven’t seen them yet, only continue at your own risk.

Robert Kirkman's Invincible TV Series Packs a Surprising Punch

Now, there is one aspect that makes the latest adaptation rather interesting. The first episode lures us into a false safe of security. It plays out as most superhero stories do. The 17-year-old Mark Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun, uncovers that he has abilities just like his father. Of course, he sees this as his opportunity to live up to his father’s reputation as one of Earth’s mightiest superheroes, Omni-Man. It follows most superhero conventions by teaching him to control his abilities, face his teenage angst, and find a perfect name. It ends with a triumphant flight through the city as he embraces his new identity before the title card shows up.

It is at this moment that the show ends and the other part of it begins. Suddenly, the story escalates once the title card vanishes. The superhero team, which is similar to the Justice League or Avengers, is murdered by Omni-Man. It’s not even just that he betrays the team out of the blue. He tears them apart. In a way, we shift from an episode of the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes straight into an animated adaptation of The Boys. The trailers tease a darker storyline, but it goes that step further to enforce this isn’t your regular superhero story. It isn’t even your everyday R-rated storyline. Its talent lies in balancing the two worlds that heroes can live within.

Invincible Trailer Reveals Amazon Has The Market Cornered on Superhero Violence | Den of Geek

There is a clear development of escalation between specific story beats. In the time we spend with Invincible, we commonly see his world get darker as time goes by. The first large-scale invasion in the second episode goes wrong. Yet, once he joins the Teen Team, it returns to a largely optimistic and comedic tone. That downtime doesn’t detract from the dark aspects of the overarching plot, but it offers a temporary break. In a way, it isn’t a subversion of the tropes we’ve come to love like The Boys is. It simply takes the base concept from comics that we’ve seen since its inception and escalates the violence. There is a reason that the title card continues to add more blood with each episode. Yes, it is adapting an existing comic, but the show uses its animated format to push that escalation. We’ve seen plenty of R-rated animated series do exactly that. So, it isn’t the first to do so. As such, it’s not reinventing the wheel in any way but using the existing and putting the pieces together to create something that feels fresh.

Robert Kirkman Confirms ‘INVINCIBLE’ Movie is Still Happening

Ever thought that two Invincible properties are better than one? Me neither, but apparently franchise creator Robert Kirkman and Universal have taken this to heart. Despite a highly anticipated animated adaptation of the Image comic series being only a handful of weeks away, Kirkman revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the long-gestating live-action movie is also still in the works. The announcement of the Amazon series had led to many wondering if the film adaptation was dead. It seemed unusual to produce such a high-quality animated series and then follow it up with a live-action adaptation.

There is the fear that it would just be repetitive. If I can watch a long-form version of the story, why invest the money to watch it in theaters again? According to Kirkman, there will be enough differences so that they can co-exist and complement each other. He does make the comparison between the Spider-Man live-action and Into the Spider-Verse animated film. The problem is that the stories told are very distinct from each other, so perhaps the live-action adaptation might have a unique take on the original story.

The live-action version got announced in 2017. The film will be produced by the creative pairing of Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg. The duo has previously found success with comedic works such as Superbad and The Interview. On another note, Rogan is also set to be a part of the concurrently produced animated series. He will be voicing Allen the Alien, so he is also involved with its production in some form. Kirkman did confirm that the film is in very early stages so it won’t release for a few years.

  • Amazon Prime’s ‘INVINCIBLE’ Release Date Finally Revealed

Amazon Prime’s ‘INVINCIBLE’ Release Date Finally Revealed

It’s been nearly three years since we first learned Robert Kirkman‘s popular superhero comic, Invincible, would be getting an animated adaptation on Amazon Prime. After months of exciting casting announcements and still-image teasers, we finally landed a release date. During a live stream, the series creator revealed that the first three episodes will release on March 26th. It was the perfect timing, as they were celebrating the anniversary of the first issue’s release. After the initial bundle of content hits streaming, you will be able to watch new episodes weekly until the first season concludes on April 30th. The reveal included a brand new clip from the show until the next trailer releases.

Invincible will be the third series adaptation of a Kirkman work. It follows in the footsteps of the massively successful The Walking Dead, which made its debut back in 2010. The series has grown into a media juggernaut with the release of various spin-offs and plenty more planned in the coming years. Six years later, an adaptation of Outcast was also released, which got canceled in 2018. After their success, it is time for some superhero action, as we follow the young Mark Grayson living under the shadow of his father, who is the most powerful superhero on the planet.

Like AMC’s powerhouse, the series offers a stellar cast of characters worthy of a spin-off. The animated series features Steven Yeun in the title role. He is joined by J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, Seth Rogan, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, and Zachary Quintom, to name only a fraction of the expansive talent list. It remains to be seen if Invincible finds the same kind of traction, but a cast stacked to the brim most definitely won’t hurt its chances.

  • First Trailer for Robert Kirkman’s ‘Invincible’ Released

First Trailer for Robert Kirkman’s ‘Invincible’ Released

Amazon Prime has had a fantastic year with its superhero content. The Boys had a very successful second season and is already entering production for its third. Now, they are adding a brand new superhero-based series in the form of Invincible. The series is currently eyeing a 2021 release with no official release date named. It is based on Robert Kirkman‘s comic of the same name, which concluded in February 2018. After a long wait, we finally got our hands on the first trailer, which teases the father-son dynamic between Mark Grayson and his father.

We also got our first series synopsis, which teases the dark history of Omni-Man and what will be at the center of this story:

Invincible is an adult animated superhero show that revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

This series has quite the amazing cast lined-up. In addition to the our father-son duo, it also includes Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jason Mantzoukas and many more. The series is being produced by Skybound with Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert, and Catherine Winder acting as executive producers. Amazon Prime is also the perfect place for a superhero show trying to tap into darker themes. It can build on the success of The Boys and fill the void left while everyone waits for the third season. Invincible is a promising addition to their streaming library and can offer another refreshing story at a world filled with superheroes.
